SIR ISAAC NEWTON AND HIS LAWS OF MOTION

“IF I HAVE SEEN FURTHER THAN OTHERS, IT IS BY STANDING UPON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS.”

SIR ISAAC NEWTON DISCOVERED THE LAWS OF LIGHT, COLOR, MOTION, AND GRAVITY

NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION

FIRST LAW: A BODY AT REST WILL REMAIN AT REST, AND A BODY IN MOTION WILL REMAIN IN MOTION AT A CONSTANT VELOCITY UNLESS ACTED UPON BY AN UNBALANCED FORCE. SECOND LAW: THE ACCELERATION OF AN OBJECT DEPENDS UPON ITS MASS AND APPLIED FORCE. F=MA THIRD LAW: FOR EVERY ACTION THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION.

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OR MOTION

AN OBJECT STAYS AT REST UNLESS ACTED UPON BY AN UNBALANCED FORCE. WHAT UNBALANCED FORCE IS ACTING ON THIS BAG?

WHAT FORCES ARE ACTING ON THIS COASTER CAR? WHICH FORCE IS STRONGER?

FORCE-- A PUSH OR A PULL NET FORCE-- SEPARATE FORCES ADDED TOGETHER UNBALANCED FORCE-- A FORCE THAT CHANGES AN OBJECT’S MOTION OR CAUSES IT TO ACCELERATE GRAVITY-- THE FORCE OF ATTRACTION BETWEEN TWO OBJECTS FRICTION-- A FORCE CAUSED WHEN TWO SURFACES SLIDE PAST EACH OTHER; SLOWS MOVING OBJECTS AND CONVERTS KINETIC ENERGY INTO HEAT (THERMAL ENERGY)

A BODY IN MOTION WILL REMAIN IN MOTION UNLESS...

SECOND LAW OF MOTION F=MA

A HEAVIER OBJECT REQUIRES A BIGGER FORCE (OR PUSH) TO CHANGE ITS SPEED OR DIRECTION THAT A LIGHTER OBJECT

IT IS MUCH EASIER TO PUSH START A SMALL CAR THAN A BIG TRUCK.

MASS-- THE AMOUNT OF MATTER IN AN OBJECT; MEASURED IN GRAMS INERTIA--AN OBJECT’S RESISTANCE TO CHANGE IN ITS STATE OF MOTION; RELATED TO AN OBJECT’S MASS SPEED--DISTANCE TRAVELED PER UNIT TIME(I.E. MPH) ACCELERATION--A MEASURE OF HOW QUICKLY THINGS PICK UP SPEED OR SLOW DOWN; CAUSED BY UNBALANCED FORCES

WHICH FALLS FIRST AND WHY?

THIRD LAW OF MOTION FOR EVERY ACTION THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION

NAME THE ACTIONS AND REACTIONS YOU SEE IN THESE PICTURES. WHERE ARE THE FORCES BEING APPLIED?

Newton!s Laws 1. Newton!s 1st Law

Name: a. A push or a pull b. The amount of matter in an object; measured in grams

2. Newton!s 2nd Law

3. Newton!s 3rd Law

4. Force

c. A body at rest will remain at rest and a body in motion will remain in motion at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. AKA the Law of Inertia d. Distance traveled per unit time (i.e. mph) e. A force that changes the direction or acceleration of an object!s motion

5. Net force

6. Unbalanced force

f. A force caused when two surfaces slide past each other; slows moving objects and converts kinetic energy into heat (thermal energy) g. The force of attraction between two objects

7. Gravity h. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction 8. Friction

i. Separated forces added together

9. Mass

j. A measure of how quickly things pick up speed or slow down; caused by unbalanced forces

10. Inertia

k. F=ma The acceleration of an object depends upon its mass and applied force

11. Speed

l. An object!s resistance to a change in its state of motion; related to an object!s mass.

12. Acceleration
