Welcome to the 34th annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition as Charleston once again roars to life for a three day celebration of wildlife art and the sporting life. SEWE serves as a reunion for many of us. It is a chance to celebrate a part of who we are, and encourage another generation to continue traditions that have bonded many of us together. There is so much to be discovered as you make your way through the weekend and we hope you can see it all. The Grand Ballroom at Charleston Place will host one of the finest displays of original wildlife and nature art available in the country. These artists, including 2016 Featured Artist Kyle Sims, have been working throughout the year to prepare a body of work specifically for SEWE. Alongside Sims, Featured Sculptor Stefan Savides will be with his collection of bronze sculptures in Charleston Place. SEWE also has the honor of welcoming Guest Artists John Banovich, Greg Beecham, and Brett Smith. All are SEWE past Featured Artists. Friday’s Quick-Draw and auction as well as the Duet and Quartet on Saturday are an excellent opportunity to view artists in action. Please take the time to introduce yourself to the incredible painters, sculptors, and carvers as you scout for an original work of art to treasure along with the experience. The Gaillard Center serves as an anchor of the Exposition and its reopening marks one of the most exciting changes for SEWE 2016. This world-class facility will be a hub of activity during the weekend with over 75 exhibitors and scheduled performances with live animal appearances. Walkable from Charleston Place and Marion Square, the Gaillard is one of the cornerstone exhibit sites of SEWE. We once again welcome our friend Jack Hanna, who will perform three shows at the Gaillard Center. Busch Wildlife Sanctuary will also be on stage, and you never know where else they will pop up over the weekend. At Marion Square you will find demonstrations by the Center for Birds of Prey and The Orianne Society. On a personal note, there will be four generations of my family at SEWE in 2016, which is something that fills me with great pride. Whether you are nine or ninety, SEWE offers exhibits and programming that will educate and inspire. It is my hope that you and generations of your family will continue to meet in Charleston every President’s Day weekend for SEWE. We are ever mindful that SEWE would not be possible without the support of our loyal attendees, Corporate Partners and Benefactors, funding from public and private grants, and city of Charleston. In a year when this City’s resolve was tested, she has shown strength and unity, and a spirit that reminds us why we are so fortunate to be here. As you make your way from venue to venue, you will realize that our city is not just a beautiful backdrop for one of the nation’s greatest events, but part of the experience. Warmest Regards,

John G. Powell

Featured Artist

FEATURED ARTIST

American West. At age 35, Sims art career has flourished and he has been selected as the 2016 SEWE Featured Artist, an accolade shared by John Banovich, Carl Brenders and someone very close to Sims - Paco Young. Paco Young was an influential teacher and it was Young that really ingrained the importance of going outside and painting from life. Painting in the field altered the way Sims sees, not only his subjects, but how it shapes the outcome of a painting. For Sims, being in the outdoors is paramount and is half (or more) of the enjoyment of being a wildlife artist. “My process begins with going outside and having experiences in nature…It keeps my mind fresh and reminds me how lucky we are to simply be alive.”

Kyle Sims 2016 Featured Artist

Every year, Kyle’s tastes with painting and art continue to evolve through practice and study. This isn’t something forced, but rather a product of time and passion, bordering on obsession. Power and Grace, the 2016 SEWE featured painting, stemmed from the combination of Sim’s imagination and hikes in his “Montana backyard.” The juxtaposition of the bears commanding position and supple movements connected for Sims and became his focus for this incredible painting. Power and Grace is available for auction on February 11.

K

yle Sims, an American realist, was born and raised near Cheyenne, Wyoming. Sims’s training with the arts began as an adolescent, but with no formal regimen. His talent and interest was recognized early by his parents and they nurtured and encouraged this passion.

In his early twenties, Sims received honors including Distinguish Young Artist by the Society of Animal Artists, Best in Show by the Buffalo Bill Art Show, and the Major General and Mrs. Don D. Pittman Wildlife Award from the Prix De West Art Show and Sale. A few years later, he received the Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award from the Masters of the

S

tefan’s life is simply about birds and art. He is one of the blessed few who have never worked a day that he was not recreating birds in one form or another. This multitalented artist, from a young age, has completely supported himself throughout his life with taxidermy, painting, carving and sculpting of birds. During his 50+ year career in avian art, Stefan’s work has been a part of the distinguished Birds in Art show and has been a SEWE crowd-favorite since his first Exposition in 2009. This year, Stefan can add yet another honor to his long list of accomplishments as he has been named the 2016 SEWE Featured Sculptor. “While it was my fifty plus years of avian taxidermy that fine-tuned my eye for bird anatomy, it was my art sense that compelled me to gravitate towards sculpture and sculpt in a style that omitted the realistic detail, a factor which is paramount in a mounted bird.”

Stefan’s passion for birds has been with him from day one. This early fascination with the avian world lead him to learn taxidermy at the young age of twelve. He was a natural. By age sixteen he was instructing adults in a night school setting and went on to establish a thriving career in taxidermy by age eighteen. His passion and dedication gained him a respected international reputation in avian taxidermy. Sculpting in bronze is a natural progression for Stefan, as it is an avenue, which provides him an opportunity to express his art and knowledge of avian anatomy in a lasting medium. Fifty years studying birds, coupled with a flair for simplistic, elegant design equates to renderings that capture the essence of his subjects in tasteful clean works of art. His work is to the point, without the distraction of overbearing detail. He has made birds his life and his work perfectly illustrates that point.

Stefan resides in Klamath Fall, Oregon with his bride, Irena.

ohn Banovich is an American oil painter known internationally for his large, dramatic portrayals of iconic wildlife. Today, Banovich’s work can be found in many museum, corporate, and private collections. While Banovich is most closely associated with African species, namely elephants, lions, leopards, cape buffalo and rhinoceros—he’s been to Africa three dozen times on research trips—he has also won accolades for his realistic interpretations of Siberian tigers, Chinese pandas, and North American megafauna (such as grizzly and polar bears, bison, and puma). Besides achieving uncommon popularity among collectors seeking originals and giclée canvas reproductions offered in limited

edition, Banovich has been a wildlife art innovator in using his paintings to raise awareness about imperiled species. He attracted global attention for his unprecedented 10x10-foot square, life-sized painting of an African elephant, titled, “Once Upon A Time,” completed to help draw attention to the growing plague of ivory poaching. Under the umbrella of the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, money generated through artwork sales has been channeled back to support grassroots conservation efforts that promote habitat protection, science-based wildlife management and sustainable tourism. Over the years, the foundation and its partners have raised millions of dollars.

reg Beecham has been painting full time since 1978 and was the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition’s Featured Artist in 2000. He has specialized in wildlife art. Greg’s vision is to “sculpt with paint” – that is to paint in such a way that there is not only the illusion of dimension, but genuine depth to the paint itself.

Greg resides high in the Rockies in Dubois, Wyoming with his wife, Lou. They enjoy riding their horses, hunting, cowboying, and watching the wildlife. As a Christian, Beecham honors the sanctity of life and the beauty of nature. His motto is “Do all things as unto the Lord, and get so good you can’t be ignored.”

He believes that if he can speak with paint more than detail, that the net result will be a life expressing realism.

Brett Smith 2016 Guest Artist If there was ever an artist who captured today’s sporting experience with yesterday’s sense of adventure, it is Brett Smith. In his early years, Smith was introduced to the sporting life by his grandfather who exposed him to the gentlemen’s sport of quail hunting in the Longleaf Pine country of east Texas. Later he discovered a calling for sitting in cold wet marshes and swamps hunting ducks. This became his true passion and a great source of inspiration for his later works. His early introduction to sporting art came from his father who worked professionally as an illustrator and moonlighted as a fine artist contributing paintings for covers of the early outdoor and western magazines. Now considered one of the best in the field, sportsmen nationwide

more with each experience. Smith’s paintings hang in some of the most prestigious collections throughout the country. Smith divides his time with his wife Cindy and two children in Covington, Louisiana and Noxon, Montana.

collect Smith’s work because it is not only visually exciting but also authentic and brings to bear his intimate knowledge of his sporting experience. He is one of the few artists who brings an ageless nostalgia to his subjects. As he puts it, “What is important in these outdoor paintings is mood, a feeling of how things were and still can be. The idea is to convey the natural ruggedness of the sport without missing the subtle nuances that make the experience personal.” Smith’s preferred medium is transparent watercolor or oil paints. The subject usually dictates the medium used. He uses oils for large complex scenes. Watercolors are used when more spontaneous results are desired. Brett Smith also employs the timeless art of etching to create the luster of an ageless A Day to Fish

The Busch Wildlife staff will introduce the wonders of the natural ecosystems and give SEWE attendees an up-close look at alligators, bobcats, foxes, birds of prey, snakes and more. The presentation will focus on the natural history of the animals while discussing ecology, conservation, endangered species and urban wildlife. The Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, of Jupiter Island, Florida, rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and educates the public about nature, wildlife and environmental issues while promoting wildlife and habitat conservation. BP Cooper River Facility & 5,500 Acre Wildlife Habitat South Carolina

Supporting the communities where our employees live and work is a key part of BP’s commitment to America, which is why BP is proud to sponsor the 2016 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition once again. At BP’s Cooper River facility, near Charleston, we support more than 1,500 South Carolina jobs. And we’re also the environmental steward to over 5,500 acres of forest and wetlands around the facility, which are managed as a certified wildlife habitat. This land is home to extensive stands of long-leaf pine, white-tailed deer, wood ducks, red-tailed hawks, great blue herons, and other wildlife. You’ve heard about BP’s Commitment to America. This is what it looks like every day, here in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. For more, go to bp.com/US © 2015 BP Products North America Inc. All rights reserved.

Celebrating 25 Years With ties to the likes of Audubon, Catesby and Bachman, South Carolina enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and, within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated on a 152-acre campus near Charleston, the Centers are dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that affect birds and humans alike.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marks its 25th year in 2016, it is primarily focused in four defined areas:

Avian Health The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 600 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365-day / 24-hour basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.

Conservation Education The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats: on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed

enthusiasm for learning – all of which contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public education - exemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.

Research Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas. The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “citizen science” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.

SC Oiled Birds Treatment Facility The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care

available for injured birds of prey and shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast. The Avian Conservation Center/Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including: Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services.

DID YOU KNOW . . . ? Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 600 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year. Visit the Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square to learn more.

• Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills • Providing medical care to more than 7000 injured birds of prey and shorebirds • As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers • Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations • Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate • Contaminant spill preparedness and response The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.

The Orianne Society Marion Square New this year, The Orianne Society will teach attendees why and how it promotes the conservation of reptiles, amphibians and game species (such as quail, turkey and deer) at the Marion Square arena. The Orianne Society is the global organization dedicated to conserving some of the most intriguing and remarkable animals on the planet – reptiles and amphibians. One of the ways it conserves these species is by protecting and restoring habitat – the same habitat and same land management methods used to promote species like bobwhite quail, wild turkey and whitetail deer. For example, when The Orianne Society applies prescribed fire to maintain healthy tracts of longleaf pine, restores native understory vegetation, or rehabilitate degraded riparian areas – it isn’t just benefiting reptiles and amphibians. Join The Orianne Society to learn more about our conservation efforts and how it encompasses promoting the conservation of reptiles and amphibians, along with many game species. This will be an informative presentation with live reptiles, including the Eastern Indigo Snake, Gopher Tortoise, and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.

Show Times Friday, Feb 12 | 1 pm Saturday, Feb 13 | 3 pm Sunday, Feb 14 | 3 pm Marion Square

Reptiles and amphibians are often the bellwethers of habitat health. To see a healthy species in the wild is to see a healthy, functioning landscape.

The feathers used are collected from aviaries after natural molting, with no harm to the bird. In fact, many of the owners of the feathers in the art are still alive and well. ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp.

waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation.

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2016 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited.

In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it will compete with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2016-2017 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts.

The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 710,000 students in South Carolina.

2016 SC Best of Show Stephanie Branton, Age 17, Oak Street Academy, Conway, SC

SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.

The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In January 2016, nearly 300 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American

Mother Earth By: Jemiell Laguito Our mother, She makes life appear to be a fantasy When in truth, life is merely just a reality. She’s bright, she’s beautiful, she’s part of our beloved dreams Yet within brightness, there’s darkness, she’s a marvelous nightmare that screams. Our mother, Her eyes, they shine and guide us through the night Her hair, so smooth and silky, like water that flows ever gently Her ears, through trees or plants or a conch shell, she listens Her lips, they softly kiss our small tender feet for every step we gain

EWE would like to thank all of the students and teachers who participated in our 2016 Kids for Conservation (KFC) arts competition. Yet again, the judges were impressed with the talent and creativity of the Tri-County students. The goal of SEWE’s KFC program is to promote wildlife and environmental conservation awareness in our youth in hopes they grow into conservationminded adults. Sponsored by SCANA, the competition is open to public, private, and home schooled students in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. Poster, photography and poetry entries will be on display at the Main Branch of the Charleston County Library on Calhoun Street during SEWE and KFC posters will be available for purchase ($1). Also at the Library, birdhouses created by Tri-County high school students will be on exhibit during the month of February. Congratulations to the 2016 KFC Winners.

Our mother, She calls breezily, through the air of the wind that blows She whispers faintly, through the echoes of nature’s journey She hums gracefully, through the birds and the trees that chime She sings gorgeously with harmony, through the soul of her great big heart Just imagine, you begin to taste salt water being sprinkled into your mouth You begin to smell dried seaweed and salt misting the air You begin to hear the wind howling and the waves splashing gently and ferociously You begin to feel the sun’s sensations beaming down onto your skin, just as well as the silken sand trickling between your toes You then begin to see those magnificent blue skies start to fade and the horizon appear right over the distant blue oceans Our mother, Beautiful isn’t she? She just sits there on her throne spinning around elegantly She’s a perfect paradise A heaven revealed under the puffy white clouds

Our mother, She takes care of us, she provides for us, she loves us, yet we treat her harshly without any thought, sense, or care We throw trash directly at her angelic face We pollute and intoxicate her fresh open air We cut down uncontrollably at all of her creations and beauty Our mother, Though we treat her grimly She forgives without regret or question But why do this our beautiful pulchritudinous mother Our beloved Mother Earth

CCPRC and the Caw Caw Wilderness Tour SEWE is proud to collaborate this year with the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission (CCPRC) and to introduce SEWE attendees to the beautiful and educational Caw Caw Interpretive Center.

Hunter’s Habit: A Collection of Hunting Firearms and Accoutrements February 1 – May 1, 2016 The Charleston Museum is proud to present, in conjunction with the 2016 Southeastern Wildlife Expo, Hunter’s Habit: A Collection of Hunting Firearms and Accoutrements, a special exhibition sponsored by the Charleston Mercury. Hunter’s Habit will display various historical examples of sporting rifles and shotguns from the South Carolina Lowcountry and other parts of the South along with hunting related materials such as clothing, decoys and powder flasks. The exhibit will draw upon the Museum’s rich collections as well as those of private collectors. Lowcountry residents have had a long history of interaction with their environment. As settlers arrived in Charleston in the late 17th century, they were quick to recognize the abundance of game that inhabited the area, including turkeys, bear, deer and numerous species of waterfowl. This variety of game satisfied an immediate need for sustenance but also heralded a proud tradition of hunting in the Lowcountry that continues to the present. This tradition spawned a unique cooperation of craftsmen that included local and regional gunsmiths, blacksmiths, silversmiths, woodcarvers and even jewelers, who together created not only elegant hunting rifles and shotguns but also accessories such as powder horns, shot pouches, and duck decoys. Although intended to be fully functional, the artisanship of these craftsmen produced splendid firearms and accoutrements that befitted the style of Charleston’s elite sportsman.

The Caw Caw Interpretive Center, just south of Charleston, contains a variety of SC Lowcountry habitats that are known for their beauty and wildlife. This nature and history center is comprised of over 7 miles of scenic trails and boardwalks. It is considered a birding hotspot for coastal South Carolina with over 250 species of birds sited including swallow-tailed kites and bald eagles. Visitors can encounter other rare wildlife like otters, dolphins, deer, cougars and alligators. Also at the Center, are former rice fields dating from the 18th century and thousands of naturalized tea plants from a 20th century tea farm.
