Welcome
WELCOME LETTER
TO SEWE 2024
Dear Friends of SEWE, Welcome to Charleston and the 42nd annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition as this city once again roars to life for a three-day celebration of wildlife art and the sporting life. We have worked diligently and eagerly awaited the assembly of artists, exhibitors, and attendees from across the United States, making this event one of the truly exceptional occasions in the Southeast. We are honored to welcome Kathleen Dunphy of California as our Featured Artist, and her painting Family Outing, which has been acclaimed since its unveiling at Gallery by SEWE. The generational aspect of this defining work has resonated with many of us who have been involved with SEWE for decades, if not its entirety. You will find the second generation represented among our artists, exhibitors, board, and full-time staff. Weekend staff boasts third-generation participants. Among our loyal attendees are stories of four generations together at SEWE. The importance of this is that SEWE is not a singular passion but a family affair for so many. We believe that this will safeguard our beloved event long into the future. As always, we thank our Corporate Partners, participants in the SEWE VIP Program, and those that strive to ensure public and private funding. This incredible weekend is made possible because of you. Have a wonderful time in Charleston and thank you for your support of Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.
With Gratitude,
John G. Powell

WELCOME LETTER
Just In TIme by Mark Kelvin Horton
Welcome
FROM MAYOR COGSWELL
Whether you’re here for a visit or call our city home, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has stood as a premier celebration of the great outdoors for over forty years. Having grown up here, I have witnessed SEWE’s evolution into a cultural cornerstone for wildlife enthusiasts, and as Mayor I am proud of the cultural institution this annual event has become. With an annual attendance of over 40,000 people, SEWE owes much of its success to the vibrant spirit of our residents and the unwavering commitment of our hospitality workforce. Their dedication is what makes this event a perennial favorite, drawing visitors back year after year. The city of Charleston takes immense pride in supporting SEWE, an event that beautifully showcases preservation through the mediums of fine art, live entertainment, and an array of phenomenal activities. As you immerse yourself in the festivities, I encourage you to savor all that our city has to offer. Indulge in our local dining experiences, find comfort in our accommodations, and explore the diverse offerings of our incredible local businesses. Your presence adds to the richness of our community, and we’re delighted to have you here. Sincerely,
Mayor William Cogswell

LIVE PRESENTATION
With ties to the likes of Audubon, Catesby and Bachman, South Carolina enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and, within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated on a 152-acre campus near Charleston, the Center is dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that affect birds and humans alike.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marked its 30th year in 2021, it is primarily focused in four defined areas:
AVIAN HEALTH The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 800 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365-day basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.
CONSERVATION EDUCATION The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats: on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed enthusiasm for learning – all of which
48
contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public education - exemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.
RESEARCH Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas. The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “citizen science” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.
SC OILED BIRDS TREATMENT FACILITY The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care available for injured birds of prey and

LIVE PRESENTATION shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast. The Avian Conservation Center/ Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including: Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services. • Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills • Providing medical care to 13,000+ injured birds of prey and shorebirds • As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers • Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations • Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate • Contaminant spill preparedness and response The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.
DID YOU KNOW . . . ? Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 800 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year. Visit the Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square to learn more.

SEWE is excited to welcome the
Carolina Marsh Tacky Association Stop by their corral at Brittlebank Park to learn more about this unique horse breed.
History and Future of the Marsh Tacky Horse The Marsh Tacky, a rare breed of Colonial Spanish Horse found in South Carolina, descended from Iberian horses that arrived on Spanish ships in the 1500’s. The horses were abandoned along the South Carolina coast and managed to survive on their own. Over the centuries the abandoned horses became adapted to the environment and developed into a unique strain of Colonial Spanish Horse, North America’s first true horse. The Marsh Tacky has played a significant role in South Carolina's history. The ancestors of today's Marsh Tacky were used by American troops in both the Revolutionary war as well as the Civil War. After the Civil War, Marsh Tackies became an essential part of the Gullah community and the agricultural community of the Lowcountry. They were used wherever horsepower was needed; to pull plows, herd cattle, hunt wild game, deliver mail, and more. They were once the major source of transportation along the coast. Traditional uses of the Marsh Tacky were replaced by machines and their numbers have dwindled drastically. Today, there are about 500 live Marsh Tackies, and individual owners, breeders, and enthusiasts are diligently working to save the Marsh Tacky and to preserve the history of the breed. The Marsh Tacky was named the official State Heritage Horse of South Carolina on June 11, 2010.

t was December, duck camp was beckoning and the boat following us up the highway was full of the necessities for roughing it in style. Two days of good companionship, no responsibilities other than dealing with the salt marsh’s idiosyncrasies and the possibility of good duck-gunning awaited us at the end of the drive.
We reached our destination that afternoon, launched the boat, parked the Blazer and headed upriver into the marsh. The tide was very high, and the boat ride a bit precarious. The 16-foot aluminum skiff was overloaded, and the wind pushed good-sized swells up into the marsh from the open bay. I breathed a sigh of relief as we entered the vast expanse of cordgrass from the river, escaping the following sea. Cottony cumulus clouds moved across a brilliant blue sky, and the latest NOAH weather report was in our favor. The possibilities for a memorable, last-of-the-season hunt lurked just around the bend of the flooded-out creek. Slowly we moved into the shallow marsh as I gave Don direction signals from the bow while he steered. The duck camp, previously shielded from our view by the naked, salt-stunted oaks, finally came into view as we rounded another bend. commanding a view of a broad expanse of salt marsh stretching away to the north. The main creek passed about 300 yards from camp, but the flood tide offered us a brief opportunity to pull the boat up a drainage ditch onto the flooded marsh, almost to the camp door. We hurriedly unloaded dogs, decoys, food, firewood, et cetera, before the tide began to ebb. Our timing was perfect. Camp had character. It had occupied the island for many years and served many a duck hunter or clammer since Don’s father purchased it back when Don was just a boy. It was two rooms—an entryway heated by an old wood-burning cook stove and a living room with the single marshview window and double bunks. After unloading the boat, repairing the stovepipe and stowing the gear, Don’s son, David, and I snuck a pair of black ducks that had dropped into the drainage ditch in front of camp. One got away, but the other didn’t, and the hunt was on. David was very happy—it was
a big deal for a 14-year-old. The sun was setting in a clear, blue western sky, with mare’s tails appearing in the east as we headed back to camp with our trophy. That night, while we grilled steaks on the old wood stove and swapped yarns of other times and places, the wind howled in from the northeast and the stars disappeared. The wind found its way through the cracks of our little haven forcing us to replenish the stove several times during the night—a precarious task with humans and dogs strewn about the floor sharing body warmth—but spirits and anticipation were high. By morning, the Northeaster had become a coastal winter storm —a wish-come-true for every waterfowler in camp. We were smack in the middle of an excellent duck marsh, surrounded by a snowstorm, and the tide was dead low—a jump-shooter’s dream. The shallowest draft boat couldn’t navigate that far into the marsh at low tide, plus it was the middle of the week, so competition from other hunters would be nonexistent. After a hasty doughnut and coffee breakfast, Don and David headed east while Red and I headed west. The camp faded into the slanting snow as we quietly moved along the creek edge, fingers on our safeties, footsteps muffled by the accumulating snow. We didn’t have long to wait before a bunch of black ducks and mallards burst from the ditch right at our feet. In the excitement, we knocked down a mallard that Red’s golden, Max, promptly retrieved.

THE MAKING OF A
CHAMPION BY DANNY BARDWELL
‘‘F
locking” is a term used in the bird dog field trial world. It has to do with taking a group of dogs, often litter mates, but maybe picks from several litters, puppies primarily, at the early stages of their development and running them in packs. “Flocks” they call them. The idea is to see which one excels, exhibits the most evident natural talent. The handler stays the intended course while the pups run helter-skelter, learning to negotiate the fields and woods they have been bred to hunt. When they get lost, as most all do from time to time, it’s the ones that have the strongest limbs, keenest hearing and coursing ability that will find their way back to the front and ultimately separate themselves from the pack. It’s the ones that show that early strength and stamina and willingness to continue eagerly after an hour or two in front of a long striding horse that separate themselves; even though they a may lack other desirable qualities such as style and grace, as style and grace lose their shine in difficult times.

CENTURY BY JIM CASADA
It all began some 40-odd years ago. On a still morning in early April where “close enough to touch” stars gave promise that bright sun would soon chase the chill, a seasoned veteran of the turkey woods gave me whispered, urgent instructions. A gobbler had just greeted the first hints of coming day not more than 200 yards away, and my mentor in turkey hunting, Parker Whedon, pointed to a nearby tree and told me: “Get comfortable there facing that old logging road. He’ll likely come that way and when he gets within 30 yards, about where that cedar bush is, shoot him in the neck.”

That’s pretty much how it unfolded, and by the time the first rays of sunshine were filtering through the greening up woods, the two of us stood admiring a fine gobbler. Thanks to a whole bunch of the ingredients that combine to make special memories, the moment was one of enchantment. “Firsts” have always been vitally important to me; so much so I still recall the first squirrel I killed all those decades ago and could readily take you to almost the precise location on a hardwood ridge in the Nantahala National Forest where it happened. The same holds true for the first trout I caught on a fly, the first rabbit I shot, my first deer and much more. Then there was the fact that the turkey was killed with my first gun—a little Savage Model 220A choked tighter than a miser’s purse.
Add to that recollections of how my grandfather had sometimes talked of when turkeys feeding on chestnuts in the autumn woods were plentiful and his bittersweet recollections of the sad demise of the grand tree of the Appalachian forests and the virtual disappearance of wild turkeys, and it’s fair to say the moment was one of emotional overload. Yet all that flood of thoughts coursing through my mind as Parker and I admired the bird, resplendent on the forest floor as early rays of sun produced an iridescent show on its feathers, pale in significance to what happened next. I lost a corner of my soul to the wild turkey. Parker Whedon was an icon of oldschool turkey hunting. That translates to the fact that he was highly secretive when it came to sharing information on

SEWE SCULPTURE INITIATIVE SEWE has made public sculpture a top initiative of its service to the community. SEWE believes public sculpture is an important part of any community, as it provides access to art for everyone, especially for youth and underserved individuals. In May of 2019, the first seeds were planted in partnership with the Town of Mount Pleasant for a sculpture exhibit that would extend throughout the region. The SEWE sculpture exhibit at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park is meant to be a cultural experience, as well as the beginning of what will become a trail throughout the Lowcountry. “The waters and marshes of the Cooper River could not be a more appropriate backdrop for sculptures of animals indigenous to the region. Teeming with wildlife, the Cooper’s tidal waters are a reminder of the rich habitat of the Lowcountry and the importance of conservation and sustainability. It has been proven with these six sculptures, it
also provides a place for reflection and inspiration,” said John Powell, SEWE President and CEO. The first public sculpture linking Mount Pleasant to Downtown was unveiled in 2021, creating the first leg of the trail. The permanent public sculpture in the Charleston Visitor Center, For Spacious Skies by Walter Matia, was donated to the City of Charleston by the SEWE Board of Directors and staff in honor of Bill Hall. In 2023, SEWE acquired the sculpture Tidewater Terrapin from renowned sculptor David Turner. It has become a permanent installation at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park and available for locals and visitors alike to view during park hours. SEWE looks forward to building its sculpture portfolio throughout the Charleston area and beyond with several new installations on the horizon for the coming year.
Those interested in submitting art or inquring about SEWE’s sculpture initiative are encouraged to contact John Powell, jpowell@sewe.com

HOST AN ARTIST PROGRAM
HOST AN ARTIST PROGRAM SEWE can always count on our local Charleston community to be a huge supporter of the arts. For over 40 years, we have invited and hosted talented artists from across the country to showcase at SEWE. We have helped launch many successful creative careers. These artists are at the heart of our event, but as the popularity of our event has grown, so have the costs for artists to attend. In addition to travel costs, artists are responsible for crating and shipping their work from their studio to our Fine Art Gallery. By donating to our Host an Artist Program your money will help reduce the costs that our SEWE artist have to incur throughout the weekend. Because of donors like you, we can continue to support our artist through the SEWE weekend. Thank you in advance for donating and please know that it means so much to each artist. Donors will receive:

E
ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2023-2024 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited. The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 700,000 students in South Carolina.
and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation. In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it competed with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2022-2023 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts. SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.
The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In 2023, more than 100 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling
