Welcome TO SEWE 2025

Dear Friends of SEWE,

On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors, welcome to Charleston and the 43rd annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition as this city once again roars to life for a three-day celebration of wildlife art and the sporting life. The extended SEWE team has curated an outstanding lineup of artists and calendar of events that promises to be one of the most robust shows in our history. The growth and evolution of this event parallels that of our great city, and is due to supporters like you. Your continued loyalty to our artists, exhibitors, and Corporate Partners is what keeps each returning and finding success not just within the show but throughout the year.

SEWE has much to offer, so we hope you will take the full weekend to visit each site and celebrate the hundreds of artists and exhibitors from across the country. Featured Artist Ray Brown created a powerful image entitled “Veiled” that represents SEWE 2025 and the diverse subject matter and medium that can be discovered within the Fine Art Gallery. Make sure to see this work and meet Ray in person along with over 80 gifted wildlife artists.

As always, we thank our Corporate Partners, participants in the SEWE VIP Program, and those that strive to ensure public and private funding. This incredible weekend is made possible because of you.

Have a wonderful time in Charleston and thank you for your support of Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.

With Gratitude,

Welcome

FROM MAYOR COGSWELL

I am pleased to welcome you to celebrate the 43rd Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in the heart of Charleston. Over the years, SEWE has grown into an unmissable event that brings wildlife and art enthusiasts from across the country to our vibrant city. With over 40,000 attendees and an economic impact exceeding $ 32 million in 2024, SEWE has firmly established itself as a highlight of Charleston’s cultural calendar.

This year promises to offer more intimate and curated events, each designed to make a lasting impact on attendees. With 300 + exhibitors, 80 + talented artists, and 90 + exciting events across five venues, SEWE will continue to showcase the very best of wildlife conservation, fine art, and live entertainment. I’m especially excited to announce that Ray Brown, a distinguished charcoal artist from Southern California, will be SEWE’s first-ever charcoal Featured Artist, adding his stunning wildlife artwork to this year’s celebration.

As the unofficial kickoff to Charleston’s tourism season, SEWE is a time when our city shines in its full beauty. Whether you’re here for the weekend or for an extended stay, I encourage you to take time to explore our local dining, accommodations, and the many offerings that make Charleston such a special place to visit. Your presence adds to the spirit and energy that make this event a success year after year.

Thank you for being part of this beloved event. We are thrilled to welcome you to Charleston for SEWE 2025.

Mayor William Cogswell

NEIL ROBINSON

As we eagerly anticipate the 43rd Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, it’s important to pause and reflect on an influential voice that has played a pivotal role in shaping SEWE into what it is today.

A s we eagerly an ti c ipate the 43rd Southeastern Wild l i f e Exposition, it’s important to pause a n d reflect on an in f l uential v oice that has played a pivotal role in shaping SEWE into what it is today.

N e il Robinson began his journey with SEWE on the Board of D irectors in the late 1980’s. H e notes, “My leadership r ole with S EWE o v er the past 30 + years had one prima r y goal – t o assure that SEWE became a permanent part of the Charleston experience, and that it had a s tr o ng and committed Board, President and staff that wou l d continue to g row the legacy o f w h a t was started some 43 years ago. ”

Neil Robinson began his journey with SEWE onn the Board of Directors in the late 1980’s. “...i t was all about bringing people to Charleston ,” Robinson recalls about the Exposition’s early years. He notes, “ My leadership role with SEWE over the past 30 + years had one primary goal – to ensure that SEWE became a permanent part of the Charleston experience, and that it had a strong and committed Board, President and staff that would continue to grow the legacy of what was started some 43 years ago. ”

Over nearly four decades of involvement, Robinson has held the titles of both President and Chairman of the Board. He was instrumental in SEWE’s transition into a 501 ( c )( 3 ) non-profit organization, a milestone that profoundly impacted the Exposition’s growth and sustainability. Robinson explains, “ My biggest accomplishment – by far – was working with Jimmy Huggins, who recently retired as President, to have SEWE recognized as a tax exempt 501 ©(3) which promotes wildlife art, wildlife conservation, and education in these areas. Second most important was growing our Board to include 16 prominent business leaders, and ultimately making the transition to a new generation of leadership by the election of George Bullwinkel, III as Chair and Tommy Hall as Vice Chair at our February 2024 annual Board meeting. Our governmental partners include support by cities, towns, counties and the State, none of which would be possible if we had not converted to a non-profit status almost 20 years ago. ” This pivotal turning point in the exposition’s history has impacted its current expansive presence and the support that helps make each February so special.

The SEWE team is humbled by the array of sponsors that have allowed us to continue to gather each year and thankful for Neil Robinson’s significant role in fostering many of those relationships. “ Our sponsors are our partners, without which we could not put on the programs that we are now able to offer, ” according to Robinson. Neil’s leadership and dedication to SEWE’s continuation year after year has been vital to the longevity of the exposition. The team of board members, year-round staff, sponsors, and volunteers are paramount to the preservation of the annual wildlife and sporting lifestyle celebration. " It’s a family of people [ who ] come together to make this happen and I’m just delighted to play a small role in it for a number of years ,” Robinson notes.

2025 FEATURED ARTIST

Ray Brown

Hall of the Mountain Kings

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ray Brown earned his B.S. in Visual Communications and began his artistic career in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, specializing in illustration and graphic design. Despite success in the commercial realm, Ray felt a strong pull to merge his artistic skills with his passion for nature and wildlife. In 2003, he relocated to California to fully pursue this dream.

Ray’s work is deeply influenced by his personal wilderness experiences, and he chooses charcoal as his primary medium for its simplicity and expressive power. Through careful attention to composition, value, and texture, he captures the beauty and depth of the natural world, communicating his profound connection to wildlife with every piece.

Being named the SEWE 2025 Featured Artist is truly an honor and a validation of the work I’ve done over the years. But more than that, it’s a full-circle moment for me. SEWE was the rst show where I exhibited my work, more than twenty years ago.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey Marion Square

The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marked its 30th year in 2021, it is primarily focused in four defined areas :

AVIAN HEALTH

The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 800 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365day basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.

CONSERVATION EDUCATION

The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats : on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed enthusiasm for learning – all of which contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential

programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public educationexemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.

RESEARCH

Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas.

The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy ( AVM ) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “ citizen science ” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.

SC OILED BIRDS TREATMENT FACILITY

The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care available for injured birds of prey and shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only

permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast.

The Avian Conservation Center/Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including :

Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services.

• Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills

• Providing medical care to 14,000 + injured birds of prey and shorebirds

• As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers

• Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations

• Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate

• Contaminant spill preparedness and response

The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $ 825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.

DID YOU KNOW . . . ?

Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 800 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year.

Public Sculpture Initiative

Pre sented by Southeastern Wildlife Exposition

SEWE’s public sculpture initiative has become a cornerstone of our mission to celebrate and preserve art and history across South Carolina. In 2024, SEWE partnered with The Citadel to unveil the newly restored South Carolina Army National Guard Panel, a historic sculpture created by renowned Charleston sculptor Willard Hirsch in 1953. Originally featured on Cold War-era armories across the state, the panel’s relocation and meticulous restoration were made possible through SEWE’s public sculpture program, the Hirsch family, and the tireless support of volunteers and donors statewide.

Now prominently displayed at Johnson Hagood Stadium, this iconic piece stands as a testament to SEWE’s dedication to preserving South Carolina’s rich history while promoting public art as an enduring cultural legacy.

SEWE is proud to introduce The Three Graces to Gallery by SEWE, a stunning addition to the gallery in downtown Charleston. Created by renowned sporting artist Joseph H. Sulkowski in collaboration with sculptor Diana Reuter-Twining, this masterpiece brings three hounds to life in a breathtaking three-dimensional orb. Inspired by Sulkowski’s mural-sized painting ‘ APOKALUPSIS : An Uncovering,’ the sculpture symbolizes love, beauty, and joy with unparalleled detail and artistry. The Three Graces offers an unforgettable experience, underscoring SEWE’s commitment to showcasing worldclass art. Don’t miss your chance to witness this one-of-a-kind creation in person this February 2025 at Gallery by SEWE on the first floor of the Charleston Place Hotel.

These exciting new additions join SEWE’s existing sculpture trail, which includes installations at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park and the Charleston Visitor Center. Together, they highlight SEWE’s commitment to making public art accessible and meaningful across the Lowcountry. SEWE looks forward to continuing to build our trail and expand it for many years to come, ensuring that art and history remain vibrant parts of our community.

Those interested in submi ing art or inquring about SEWE’s sculpture initiative are encouraged to contact John Powell, jpowell@sewe.com.

Host an Artist Program

SEWE can always count on our local Charleston community to be a huge supporter of the arts. For nearly 43 years, we have invited and hosted talented artists from across the country to showcase at SEWE. We have helped launch many successful creative careers. These artists are at the heart of our event, but as the popularity of our event has grown, so have the costs for artists to attend. In addition to travel costs, artists are responsible for crating and shipping their work from their studio to our Fine Art Gallery. By donating to our Host an Artist Program your money will help reduce the costs that our SEWE artist have to incur throughout the weekend. Because of donors like you, we can continue to support our artist through the SEWE weekend. Thank you in advance for donating and please know that it means so much to each artist.

Donors will receive:

Special recognition at SEWE 2025

Listing on signage in the Fine Art Gallery

A badge/ticket embellishment noting participation for artist recognition

Anyone participating as a Fine Art Supporter who is not already a Patron or Benefactor will receive admittance to the Private Preview Hours on Thursday afternoon.

Contributions to the Host an Artist Program may be made at any time during SEWE weekend by visiting the VIP Lounge in The Charleston Place.

Each year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize : a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp.

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2024-2025 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited.

The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration of the program and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 700,000 students in South Carolina.

The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically

express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife.

In 2025, more than 100 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups ( K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 ) , they created visually compelling and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation.

In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “ Best of Show ” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it competed with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2023-2024 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts.

SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.

Palmetto Bluff Conservancy

At Palmetto Bluff, we believe that protecting this place means preserving the memories made here. This creed is why the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy was created 21 years ago - to preserve the rich ecological diversity that makes life at the Bluff magical. With this mission in mind, the Conservancy helps guide the ongoing evolution of Palmetto Bluff, ensuring continued respect for both the land and its history.

Community Planning

While Palmetto Bluff reflects the architectural and landscape traditions that shaped the region, we allowed the land to dictate the placement of homes, neighborhoods, and amenities. Recognizing that a natural environment is integral to Palmetto Bluff’s timeless, unique appeal, our goal continues to fortify the landscape through mindful and diligent stewardship. These thoughtful decisions cultivate a lifestyle and place that endurance as time unfolds.

Education & Programs

With ongoing research and a vast outdoor classroom at our fingertips, the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy offers yearlong, interactive educational programs for visitors and Palmetto Bluff members.
