SEWE.COM

WELCOME We are pleased to release the sixth edition of the SEWE Art Book, a carefully curated collection representing some of the nation’s most talented wildlife painters and sculptors. These works represent a sampling of what will be offered when we gather in Charleston for the 40th Annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. As we look forward to SEWE week, our hope is that this collection serves as inspiration beyond art and the natural world. This book represents what has always been at the core of the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, and that is you. Without the celebration and interaction between artists, collectors and conservationists, we would not be able to achieve our multifaceted mission each and every year. This Art Book is dedicated to everyone that has walked through the Fine Art Gallery at SEWE over the last 40 years. Each year, we recognize one accomplished artist, who creates the highly anticipated Featured Painting. SEWE is delighted to name Julia Rogers as the 2022 Featured Artist. Within these pages, Rogers is joined by fellow wildlife and nature artists Brett James Smith, Stefan Savides, Walter Matia, Mark Kelvin Horton and Julie Jeppsen…to name a few. Explore the 2022 SEWE Art Book to find a new piece of art and receive the first chance to purchase new work by SEWE artists. We look forward to helping you curate your collection.

Welcome

Julia Rogers 2022 FEATURED ARTIST

Julia Rogers grew up on the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern shore of Maryland. She began her career as a wildlife painter at the young age of 17 and has traveled far and wide to feed her passion for the outdoors and its natural beauty. Rogers has worked in several mediums and gradually developed a distinctive style that is seen today in her oil paintings. Rogers believes it is important to try new things and push into different areas and painting en plain air, figurative work, and portraiture are all part of her discipline. She attributes many periods of growth in her paintings to reference trips she has taken and believes seeing animals in their own environment and witnessing their natural behavior has shaped the way she paints. Rogers’ approach to painting is to depict a vision of the feeling she hopes to portray through color, light and composition.

Rogers’ Featured Piece, Golden Light, depicts a trio of swans basking in the warm sunlight with one stretching its angelic wings. Swans are a symbol of purity of spirit, strength and rebirth. “I wanted to express a feeling of weightlessness, light and air,” said Rogers. “My intent for the composition was to show a repeated pattern in the curvature of the necks while stretching and preening, highlighted by the warm sun streaming through the space.” Rogers has been rewarded for her efforts by being exhibited in numerous prestigious venues. She resides and has a studio on the eastern shore of Maryland with her artist husband, Matthew Hillier, and their two dogs.

Kathleen Dunphy 2022 GUEST ARTIST

Masterfully capturing the intrinsic beauty of nature, nationally acclaimed artist Kathleen Dunphy paints with a characteristic passion that soulfully radiates true-to-life light and color.

In 2000, Dunphy was awarded a scholarship at the renowned Academy of Art University in San Francisco, an institution where she maintains strong ties.

Nearly two decades after American Artist Magazine recognized her as one of its “Top Ten Emerging Artists”, Dunphy’s star continues rising through her devotion to her career, proliferation of works, participation in distinguished national exhibitions, and sharing of her abilities as a popular instructor to students of all levels.

Since 2003, Dunphy and her husband, Randy Smart, have happily been settled in the pristine Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California. Their farm, complete with a goat herd, chickens, cats, and dogs, also contains a studio of her own design, enabling her to find endless inspiration for her work within footsteps. An avid outdoors person and hiker, she relishes painting several times a month “en plein air” with her sidekick and canine companion Ellie.

Dunphy’s broad subjects range from landscapes and seascapes to wildlife and still life art. Her works are enjoyed by collectors around the globe and by art lovers who are able to view them in public collections such as at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, which purchased one of her paintings for its permanent collection.
