Welcome SEWE at 35 As the doors open on our 35th anniversary, we celebrate this milestone with gratitude for all who have been a part of the event, and with fond remembrance for those no longer with us. We look back with pride to over three decades of accomplishments, and look forward with confidence to a future that maintains the standard of excellence that is SEWE’s hallmark. You’ll find that excellence on display once again in the The Fine Art Gallery at Charleston Place, where some of the most gifted artists in the country showcase their creations. In addition, we highlight the work of our special guests, Featured Artist, Ezra Tucker, and Guest Artists, carver Richard Loffler, and sculptor Van Keuren Marshall. As you make your way through this year’s exhibit sites, reconnect with your annual favorites such as The Center for Birds of Prey and Ducks Unlimited, share the fun and excitement of the Dock Dogs Competitions and marvel in the fast-paced action of the decoy auction. Explore all that our celebration of wildlife art and the sporting life encompasses, and be sure to help us welcome back wildlife conservationist and television host, Jeff Corwin. If told, stories from 35 years of this event would paint portraits of every emotion known to humankind – from comedy to tragedy, from angst to elation. Mishaps and mayhem of every stripe have transpired through the years, as have incredible feats of organizational finesse, hard work, and staggering blind luck. So many have given so much to SEWE - far too many to be named. But common threads bind them together as a family: their dedication and loyalty to the dream that began so many years ago, their unwillingness to settle for anything less than the best, and no small amount of audacity. The success of SEWE is due in no small part to you, and we are grateful for the generations of attendees who join us each year. We hope that you will help us recognize the sponsors whose generous support makes the event possible, the Board of Directors who lend their time and expertise, the artists and exhibitors who create a feast for all our senses, and the dedicated staff that works year-round to ensure that every minute of your SEWE experience is the best it can possibly be. Throughout the years, it has been my distinct pleasure and privilege to welcome you to Charleston, and we are honored to have you join us for the 35th Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Enjoy the event! Warmest Regards,

Jimmy Huggins

moment in time reveals a rarely highlighted detail, an incident or fact that can be a big dramatic scene or a subtle relaxed blink. Tucker’s bold and distinctive style of painting reflects acute observation and knowledge of his subject and displays an intimate and emotional portrait quality and adept storytelling. Choosing to paint almost exclusively wildlife, he paints his animals as having apparent intelligence and individual distinctive personalities. Tucker’s original works hang in the permanent collections of the Booth Western Art Museum, The Pentagon Air Force Art Collection, Anheuser- Busch, Inc., the Texas Rangers Historical Museum and the Rossignol Cultural Centre in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Ezra is a Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists.

The 2017 Featured Painting, Maternal Manner, portrays an elk cow and calf. “It was inspired by my observation of the beauty and warmth of the nurturing and protective relationship of mother to offspring,” says Tucker. “I wanted to capture the subtle interaction and physical contact of the mother elk with its offspring teaching the calf survival skills. My objective was to depict up-close, their reaction to the moment they become aware of a non-threatening admiring audience.” Maternal Manner is available for auction on February 16. Dominant Ram

ichard Loffler is passionate about what lives beneath the big skies. Nature and wildlife have been an integral part of his world since youth. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Loffler is inspired by the splendor and the natural beauty prairies have to offer. His work with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum from 1978 to 2000 became the impetus to his artistic endeavors.

Always fascinated by the creations of nature and the themes of life it generates, Loffer believes nature is a tremendous foundation from which to acquire knowledge and understanding. Through evolution, each animal has carved its own original statement within this vast scheme of rhythm and structure. Its spirit and vitality offer a perpetual platform from which to learn. The complex web that nature weaves for us cannot be understood in one artist’s lifetime; it is a forever growing and changing format and one that deserves distinction. “Working from life affords me controlled confidence. No questions go unanswered. My approach is traditional with impressionistic flavor. I try to capture the character of my subjects at moments of instinctive gesture, while controlling design and composition to present a grace to each piece. To study from life allows me simply the truth; it affords me the ability to pursue my passion as a life long venture.”

an Keuren Marshall grew up in South Carolina and from an early age enjoyed drawing and sketching birds. When he was 11 years old his great aunt gave him a 1942 bound edition of Audubon’s The Birds of America, which encouraged Marshall’s early interest in bird art and the natural world and led him to begin college as an art major and to finish with a biology degree. Marshall’s post-college work as a cabinet maker and woodworker along with his continuing love of birds and art eventually led to a providential meeting in 1980 with Grainger McKoy, the renowned South Carolina bird sculptor. Grainger offered him an opportunity to apprentice at his studio on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina. This very generous offer encouraged and inspired Marshall’s eventual decision to become a full-time bird sculptor. Today, Marshall sculpts a broad range of birds - from the tiny Ruby-throated Hummingbird to the full-size Wild Turkey Gobbler. He works primarily with basswood

to carve and burn intricate feather details in the decorative style of bird sculpture. These decorative pieces are usually life size and are painted realistically with oil colors. Marshall also enjoys carving birds from mahogany and walnut and leaving them unpainted. This interpretive style presents compelling, dynamic bird sculptures while highlighting the natural beauty of the wood. His sculpture has been exhibited in the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Birds in Art Show, has won awards at the Ward Foundation World Wildfowl Carving Competition in Ocean City, Maryland and his “Courting Kestrels” won Best in World for Interpretive Wood Sculpture in 1990. His work can be found in numerous private collections. Van lives in Summerville, South Carolina with his wife, Catherine, and their black lab, Ollie. They have two sons in their early 20s, both currently studying aerospace engineering. Bird 1

Safety doesn’t come in a box. It’s not a banner that goes on a wall. It’s not something you do now and then. Or when it’s convenient. It’s using state-of-the-art simulators to better prepare for any situation. It’s giving offshore teams in the Gulf 24/7 support from onshore experts. And it’s empowering anyone to stop a job if something doesn’t seem right. Safety is never being satisfied. And always working to be better.

W

ith ties to the likes of Audubon, Catesby and Bachman, South Carolina enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and, within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated on a 152-acre campus near Charleston, the Centers are dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that affect birds and humans alike.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marks its 25th year in 2016, it is primarily focused in four defined areas:

Avian Health The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 600 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365-day / 24-hour basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.

Conservation Education The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats: on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed

34

enthusiasm for learning – all of which contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public education - exemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.

Research Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas. The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “citizen science” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.

SC Oiled Birds Treatment Facility The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care

available for injured birds of prey and shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast. The Avian Conservation Center/Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including: Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services.

DID YOU KNOW . . . ? Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 600 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year. Visit the Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square to learn more.

• Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills • Providing medical care to more than 7000 injured birds of prey and shorebirds • As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers • Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations • Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate • Contaminant spill preparedness and response The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.

success last year, The Orianne Society will teach attendees why and how it promotes the conservation of reptiles, amphibians and game species (such as quail, turkey and deer) at the Marion Square arena. The Orianne Society is the global organization dedicated to conserving some of the most intriguing and remarkable animals on the planet – reptiles and amphibians. One of the ways it conserves these species is by protecting and restoring habitat – the same habitat and same land management methods used to promote species like bobwhite quail, wild turkey and whitetail deer. For example, when The Orianne Society applies prescribed fire to maintain healthy tracts of longleaf pine, restores native understory vegetation, or rehabilitate degraded riparian areas – it isn’t just benefiting reptiles and amphibians. Join The Orianne Society to learn more about our conservation efforts and how it encompasses promoting the conservation of reptiles and amphibians, along with many game species. This will be an informative presentation with live reptiles, including the Eastern Indigo Snake, Gopher Tortoise, and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.

Show Times Friday, Feb 17 | 1 pm Saturday, Feb 18 | 3 pm Sunday, Feb 19 | 3 pm Marion Square

Reptiles and amphibians are often the bellwethers of habitat health. To see a healthy species in the wild is to see a healthy, functioning landscape.

udubon is the story of John James Audubon’s adventure across America as he pursued his dream of painting life-size images of all of the bird species of America. A singular visionary in frontier America, Audubon is the godfather of today’s conservation movement. His passion for birds carried him across the continental wilderness to observe them in their native habitat, and his skills as an artist immortalized these creatures and their environment. The legacy of Audubon is as timeless and vital as his art. This film is an effort to appreciate him as he deserves.

ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp.

waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation.

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2017 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited.

In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it will compete with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2017-2018 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts.

The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 710,000 students in South Carolina.

2016 SC Best of Show Stephanie Branton, Age 17, Oak Street Academy, Conway, SC

SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.

The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In January 2017, more than 300 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American

EWE would like to thank all of the students and teachers who participated in our 2017 Kids for Conservation (KFC) arts competition. Yet again, the judges were impressed with the talent and creativity of the Tri-County students. The goal of SEWE’s KFC program is to promote wildlife and environmental conservation awareness in our youth in hopes they grow into conservationminded adults. Sponsored by SCANA, the competition is open to public, private, and home schooled students in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. Poster, photography and poetry entries will be on display at the Main Branch of the Charleston County Library on Calhoun Street during SEWE and KFC posters will be available for purchase ($1). Also at the Library, birdhouses created by Tri-County high school students will be on exhibit during the month of February.

1st Beautiful Earth By: Everson Walker Laing Middle School, 6th Grade

All the seeds and trees we planted, All the things we take for granted, And all around there would be no mirth, If we did not have the Earth. So for the puzzle is one last piece. What would we eat without plants and trees? Now that I have made my point clear, Let’s make sure the plants stay here.

Feathers and Flocks: Waterfowling in South Carolina February 15 – May 7, 2017

“T

hey frequent the lower parts of Rivers in Carolina” was about all Mark Catesby could say about “the little brown duck” that got away from him whilst compiling notes for his eighteenth century masterwork detailing the region’s wildlife. Of course, the bird’s speed and elusiveness came as no surprise to the countless duck hunters and birdwatchers that followed. Numerous species of ducks and other local waterfowl are central to the Lowcountry’s historical culture, their meat and feathers filling specific desires from dining tables to fashion statements, and even indigenous sacred ceremonies. These birds today still carry a certain mystique all their own, influencing artisans and artists alike with their serene demeanor and brilliant plumage. Even hunting them has become somewhat of an art form. Handcrafted decoys and calls have themselves become prized possessions, as have the elegant shotguns used in conjunction with them. The Charleston Museum, in cooperation with the 2017 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, and with generous sponsorship from the Charleston Mercury, presents Feathers and Flocks: Waterfowling in South Carolina, a collective look at the historic art and artifacts associated with local waterfowling. This exhibit will draw from a number of different categories from the Museum’s vast collections as well as a few private ones, and offer an important glimpse into the South Carolina Lowcountry’s longstanding water bird traditions.

CCPRC is a 10,000 acres park system featuring day parks, beaches, fishing piers, waterparks, boat landings, a climbing wall, a challenge course, an interpretive center, an equestrian center, cottages, a campground, and a marina. The park system also offers a wide variety of recreational services – festivals, camps, classes, programs, and more. The Caw Caw Interpretive Center, just south of Charleston, contains a variety of SC Lowcountry habitats that are known for their beauty and wildlife. This nature and history center is comprised of over 7 miles of scenic trails and boardwalks. It is considered a birding hotspot for coastal South Carolina with over 250 species of birds sited including swallow-tailed kites and bald eagles. Visitors can encounter other rare wildlife like otters, dolphins, deer, cougars and alligators. Also at the Center, are former rice fields dating from the 18th century and thousands of naturalized tea plants from a 20th century tea farm.

Combing the Caw Caw Wilderness Tour 1 pm – 4:30 pm Saturday, February 18

Join a naturalist to explore a cypress/tupelo swamp, freshwater marsh, saltwater marsh, bottomland hardwood forest, and more. Eagles, turkeys, otters, waterfowl and more are often observed from the trails at Caw Caw. There's no better way to learn about the wilds of the SC Lowcountry. Have your cameras ready because you will never know what you will see. TICKETS: $35 per person, ages 12 and up. Available at CharlestonCountyParks.com (under program & activities) or call 843.795.4386. (Select course # 44920). Includes pick up and drop off from Charleston Visitor Center Bus Shed.
