WELCOME TO TANKWELL

Tankwell is an innovation in the tank container market and was achieved due to the collaboration between Composite Production Technology B.V. (CPT) and Flax Field Europe (FFE). Two companies with different backgrounds, however, by bundling their forces

ON 14 OCTOBER 2016 TANKWELL CELEBRATED THE DELIVERY OF ITS 100TH COMPOSITE TANK CONTAINER

and by sharing knowledge an innovation in the tank container market was realized: Tankwell, tank containers made of composite! In 2010 an initial feasibility study was carried out by the two parties. Results confirmed the expectations; the main driver for the application of composite is the reduction of weight. Two other huge advantages became apparent; the improved thermal insulation and the chemical resistance properties.

2011 saw a continuance of the development into

economic and technical aspects resulting in Tankwell launching a super light weight composite swap body tank container for the transportation of chemical and food liquids early 2015.

Since the start of the production in 2015 more than 100 Tankwell composite tank containers have been successfully produced and delivered to transport and leasing companies for use in both chemical and food transportation networks . In the meantime the production process has been further optimized and during the course of 2017 Tankwell will move its operation to larger premises to further expand its production capability.

OVER 50 YEARS COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE IN THE TANK CONTAINER MARKET

6

CO2MPOSITE TANK CONTAINERS

BUNDLING FORCES AND SHARING KNOWLEDGE COMPOSITE PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY CPT started as initiator for the development of automated production of large size composite products. Because of the successful focus on the development of composite tank containers, the mission of the company changed to the development and production of composite tanks and tank containers that enable sustainable liquid logistics. Tankwell is a CPT brand.

FLAX FIELD EUROPE FFE has over 50 years collective experience in the tank container market in the field of sales, production and engineering of conventional stainless steel 20 ft, swap body type tank containers and carbon steel gas tanks. Exposure in the early days of the development of tank containers with Dutch builder Holvrieka, continuing with South African manufacturer Consani finally leading to the establishment of the privately owned FFE in 2004. FFE have been instumental in establishing the tank container manufacturing capabilities of the publicly listed box and tank container manufacturer Singamas and more recently the wider introduction of JOPM’s gas tank container products to the international market. The collective knowledge and experience facilitates continuous product development for the manufacturers with which FFE are involved. Focus on a range of developments including: weight reduction, insulation properties, cost reduction, production process improvement and improved sustainability by choice of materials leading to a reduction of CO₂ emissions. Furthermore FFE offers after sales capabilities for repairs, periodic testing, modification and the customization of highly specialized equipment through its part ownership of the premier tank repair depot Aspenal in Europoort (Rotterdam), the Netherlands.

BENEFITS Four primary benefits can be highlighted as follows:

1. UPTO 40% WEIGHT REDUCTION This results in a tare weight of only 2250 kg for a 31.000 litre tank container providing between 5% to 10% reduction in freight costs through increased payload.

2. 40% BETTER INSULATION The improved thermal insulation performance. Composite materials provide decreased heat conductivity when compared to an equivalent stainless steel type, resulting in 40 % better thermal properties coupled to the innovative method of reduction of thermal bridges. The need for additional heating during transport or re-heating of the product prior to the customer delivery, can be either reduced remarkably or even eradicated entirely, further reducing the impact on the environment.

3. IMPROVED CLEAN ABILITY

THE MAJORITY OF THE BENEFITS RESULT IN LESS CO2 EMISSION AND THUS HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT

The innovative method of manufacture allows a seamless inner vessel eliminating areas of possible product retention, reduces the risk of corrosion and coupled to the relative smoothness of the inner surface, offers improved clean ability. A reduction in costs, quantity of chemicals/additives needed to clean and fewer empty kilometers caused by restrictions linked to previous cargoes offer further operational benefits.

4. WALL THICKNESS REINSTATEMENT Unlike stainless steel tanks the composite tank material allows, in the event of damage or corrosion, a repair procedure to be performed that will bring the wall thickness of the vessel back to the original thickness or an even greater one offering additional local protection to the affected areas. The majority of the benefits also result in one major gain: reduction of COâ‚‚ emissions and thus a positive impact on the environment.

USP’S • Light weight (swap body) tank container

offering up to 40% weight saving

• 5% to 10% reduction in freight cost • Increase on payload:

less transport

less CO2 emission

less physical handlings

less congestion

less risk

• 40% better thermal insulation • Indirect effect on improved safety performance • Chemical resistance • Food compatibility • Repair ability • Clean ability

PRODUCTION PROCESS

• External frame in the overall design; assembly

with an excellent rigidity and mechanical integrity

• Manholes, valves and auxiliary components

made of stainless steel

• Made in Holland!

A number of innovations are employed in the production process of the vessel. The one-step filament winding process is the most optimal and efficient way to produce the lightweight tanks or vessels. By removing the need to combine separate end-caps onto a circular filament wound core, results in a localized reduction of material required for reinforcement of the joints. With Tankwell’s one-step manufacturing method an optimized ratio is achieved between mechanical strength and low weight of the vessel, confirming that composite materials offer, in combination with a sophisticated production process, good opportunities to construct pressure vessels as an alternative to stainless steel tanks containers.

CHEMICAL COMPATIBILITY The chemical compatibility of the vessel with the cargo is mainly determined by the resin rich inner layer of the tank: the liner. The resin sourced from Aliancys/DSM provides resistance to a wide range of acids, alkali and bleaches for use in the chemical processing industry. An extensive list of corrosion resistance data and application temperatures is available for a wide range of substances. Due to close cooperation with Aliancys/DSM, Tankwell can give advice on substances that are not listed.

FOOD COMPATIBILITY The chosen resin is specifically intended for food contact and potable water applications and is manufactured compliant with European food contact law. Production processes are determined so that chemical residues of the resin are at levels below that required for food contacts. Tankwell containers are in compliance with EU Food regulation (EC) no. 1935/2004 and are in accordance with EU regulation (EU) no. 10/2011 for European food contact. Furhtermore, analysis of the tank material and migration testing have been performed by leading independent bodies.
