SPOTLIGHT ON OLIVIA DUNCAN 2023-2024

Thespian Award Recipient

Theater is often described as a powerful medium for self-expression, connection, and growth. For graduate, Olivia Duncan, now a freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, this art form has been a transformative journey that blends creativity with personal development. Majoring in Political Science and minoring in Indigenous Studies, Olivia brings a unique perspective from both her academic and theatrical pursuits. Reflecting on her theatrical journey, Olivia’s favorite role as “Phyllis Montague” in Play On stands out. “I loved the ability to just let loose and have fun,” she recalls. This role felt natural to her, allowing her to explore the joy of performance without the weight of expectations. However, it was her experience in Footloose that truly defined her connection to theater. During a time of significant change in her life, the energetic musical provided a safe space to have fun and discover more about herself. “Footloose was where I got to have fun and learn more about myself. I made some of my best friends through that show,” Olivia explains. The camaraderie and musicality of the production became a pivotal part of her high school experience, reinforcing the notion that theater is a sanctuary for self-discovery and friendship.

Olivia emphasizes the communal aspect of theater as one of its greatest strengths. “Theater is more special than I ever would have anticipated,” she says. It unites people from diverse backgrounds through the shared love of performance, creating a welcoming environment for those seeking an outlet. For Olivia, the O’Gorman community played a vital role, offering a space where she and her peers could express themselves and find their footing amidst the uncertainties of adolescence.

She recalls the little moments that made her experience so memorable: the conversations before rehearsal, the backstage makeup routines, and the joy of watching her fellow castmates grow in confidence. “Ultimately, it was connecting with my castmates, learning their personalities, and discovering more about myself at the same time,” she reflects.

As Olivia transitioned from high school to college, she learned invaluable lessons about navigating both her academic and artistic pursuits. “Take it one day at a time,” she advises. This mindset shift allowed her to embrace each day as a fresh start, emphasizing that a bad day is merely a moment in time, not a permanent state.

Olivia also acknowledges the importance of following her intuition. Reflecting on her choices, she admits to a few regrets, particularly not auditioning for the musical during her sophomore year. “I made a million excuses,” she recalls. “In the end, I felt left out and I knew I made a mistake.” This experience taught her the importance of seizing opportunities, reinforcing her belief in taking chances and trusting her instincts.

As she continues her studies, she cherishes the moments in rehearsal when the transition from memorizing lines to character development begins. “Seeing everyone’s individual choices and personalities come alive is something seriously magical,” she expresses.

Olivia Duncan stands as a testament to the power of theater not just as an art form, but as a means of personal growth, community building, and self-discovery. Her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring performers and students alike, reminding us all of the magic that can unfold when we embrace our passions and follow our hearts
