Gov. Ron DeSantis made good on his promise to crack down on drag shows Friday after the state filed a complaint against the Orlando Philharmonic Foundation.
The venue hosted “A Drag Queen Christmas” in December and the state accused it of “exposing minor children to lewd sexual acts.” One lawyer is pushing back describing this as an assault on the First Amendment’s protection of freedom of speech and expression.
“The danger presented here is not confined to only the venue targeted in the complaint. When the government violates the First Amendment rights of a segment of its population the result is a ‘chilling effect’ on others engaged in similar expression,” said Russell Cormican, a local attorney who specializes in First Amendment law. “It is likely that other venues will shy away from presenting drag shows and that performers may elect to change their routines or abandon drag altogether. The fear of enforcement will cause people to curtail their constitutionally protected expression. For that reason, it is important to strongly oppose these attempts at censorship immediately.”
The venue could lose its state-issued liquor license.
The state is also investigating the Broward Center for the Performing for hosting the same traveling drag show on Dec. 26.
“Will we see investigations into parents who take their children to see R-rated movies? Of course not. Because for the governor, this is about dredging up Anita Bryant-era, antiLGBTQ hysteria for a primary audience in Iowa,” Equality Florida’s Brandon Wolf told SFGN in December. “DeSantis’ selective outrage and weaponizing of state agencies isn’t about
protecting children. He is, as usual, placing our community in harm’s way to outflank Donald Trump to the right and pander to the right-wing extremists bankrolling his political ambitions.”
The complaint against the Orlando venue includes photos of children entering the establishment. The complaint also noted there was a sign at the entrance that advised attendees of potentially unsuitable content for those under the age of 18.
The James L. Knight Center in Miami also hosted the same show, but so far the Department of Business and Professional Regulation has not taken any action against either South Florida venue, according to the Sun Sentinel. It’s unclear what are the technical differences between the drag show that took place in Orlando and the ones that took place in South Florida.
“The actions taken by DeSantis and the DBPR are not only an affront to LGBTQ rights, but also show a complete lack of respect for the rights and freedoms protected by the First Amendment,” Cormican said. “Drag performance enjoys a long theatrical history and is an important part of gay culture. It is also a form of expression that receives protection from government interference under the First Amendment.”
According to the Sun Sentinel, the Orlando Philharmonic Plaza Foundation’s board of directors released a statement saying they respect, “the rights of parents to decide what content is or is not appropriate for their own children.”
For now, according to the Sun Sentinel, the Orlando venue will continue to be able to sell alcohol, “until final action is taken by the agency in accordance with Florida’s Administrative Procedure Act.”
Going after a venue’s liquor license harkens back to a time even before the Stonewall Riots when the New York State Liquor Authority would target establishments that served alcohol to known or suspected LGBT individuals. Bars that served LGBT folks ran the risk of having their liquor license revoked.
“DeSantis has targeted the liquor licenses of venues that present drag shows by alleging that they are ‘sexually explicit’ and being presented to children,” Cormican said. “The reality is that these performances are no more explicit than a PG movie, a WWE wrestling show, or a beauty pageant swimsuit competition. The fact that DeSantis has singled out drag shows for this type of enforcement speaks volumes about his true motive.”

A study by the name of “The Pot at the End of the Rainbow” is among the first to examine the drive for cannabis use among sexual minorities quantitatively. Led by psychologists at Washington State University, data was analyzed from almost 4,700 university students across the country. Twenty-three percent of participants identified as bisexual.
“The group classified as bisexual was more likely to report using cannabis to cope as well as for enhancement, which is a bit surprising,” said Kyle Schofield, a WSU Ph.D. candidate in Psychology to the WSU Insider.
The bisexual group reported higher levels of marijuana use disorder, generalized or social anxiety, depression, and suicidality than any of the other groups.
“People who are in sexual minority groups not only face normal life stress but also an additional column of stress that’s related to being a sexual minority,” said Schofield. “For bisexual people, there may be even more different types of stress since they can face discrimination from gay as well as straight communities, and additional stress can lead to negative mental health outcomes.”
BDylan Mulvaney, an actress, transgender rights activist, and TikToker, underwent facial feminization surgery, or FFS back in December. Mulvaney kept fans updated for weeks and finally posted a much-wanted face.
FFS refers to gender-affirming treatments used to feminize facial appearance. Examples include having cheekbones and lips augmented, having the hairline moved to have a smaller forehead, having the jaw and chin reshaped and resized, etc.
“I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” said Mulvaney in an Instagram post.
After weeks of teasers, Mulvaney dropped her facial reveal video on Jan. 27. “Oh my gosh hi, I missed you!” she said. “You know I have a flair for the dramatics. It’s so good, right?”
On Jan. 30, Mulvaney explained FFS. “FFS is sort of like a choose your own adventure.” The surgery felt “extremely privileged” for her.
“You can get one of those things. You can get all of them. You can get none of them,” she said. “It’s really whatever you have dysphoria over.”
Tzlil Alush and Amit Lind, a lesbian couple in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel, were denied to host their wedding at a privately owned venue. The venue, Hameshek Shel Abba, is located in Tifrah, a moshav or cooperative agricultural community.
Hameshek Shel Abba claimed the local government prohibits queer weddings, but the reigning councils of the region denied any such prohibition, which an employee of the venue cited.
When Alush spoke with a representative of the venue, she specified that the wedding would be between two women and received pushback. The venue claimed it needed permission for every wedding that takes place from the regional religious council.
Alush told Haaretz, “I have no hatred toward anyone, or complaints against [the employee] personally. But there was such a good atmosphere surrounding the conversation, it broke my heart. I realized that this is bigger than one wedding … The
system is screwed up.”
Current Israeli law prohibits businesses that provide public services from discrimination based on sexuality. Members of the new governing coalition have claimed they seek to change this soon.
It was supposed to be a match made in philanthropic heaven. Pride Fort Lauderdale and FlockFest together under one umbrella. The two organizations began working closely to see if it would work.
It didn’t.
But the experiment led to members of FlockFest getting an inside look at Pride as an organization. That included one of their board members becoming co-treasurer at Pride, and FlockFest founder Steven Crawford joining Pride’s board as vice president.
Crawford talked exclusively with SFGN about the two cultures and his hopes for Pride of the Americas (POTA) this weekend.
“The more and more we got involved, the more and more we said this is not a match.”
Crawford said he knew within three months of starting work with Pride that it wouldn’t work. SFGN has run a series of articles calling into question a lack of leadership, transparency, and organization at Pride.
Crawford joined Pride to explore the possibility of a merger and his main accomplishment has been modernizing Pride’s website. A Nov. 2, 2022 memo circulated among Pride leaders and obtained by SFGN, details a lack of organization.
SFGN obtained emails between Pride and the City of Fort Lauderdale through a public records request.
In one example of delays, the emails show Pride asking on Dec. 5 (two months before the event) about a $75,000 grant they were approved for in 2020. That’s when Pride of the Americas was initially scheduled to be held, but was canceled due COVID-19.
The city explained the grant had since expired and they’d have to ask for another one ASAP.
“…There is a very short timeline between the [Beach Business Improvement District] meeting and the event, considering that it also has to be approved by the City Commission I will have to figure out if and how it can be done,” a city official wrote.
In the email exchanges it appears Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Steve Glassman stepped to assist Pride on quickly getting another grant. The new, but smaller, grant of
$58,664 was approved Dec. 20.
That and other red flags had Crawford re-examining Pride’s plans as well as their contrasting cultures.
Crawford says that while Pride is a oneday-a-year event, FlockFest is out and about working all year. He believes that is backward.
“Pride should be in the community doing what FlockFest does, but that’s not how it is.”
“A red flag? It’s not the way I run FlockFest. I’ve already applied for permits and we’re six months out. I noticed we needed to cut back on Pride.”
He notes sponsors’ generosity was curtailed over the past year.
“I sat in on a lot of meetings between [Pride Executive Director] Kevin [Clevenger] and the sponsors and they said we gave X dollars last year and this year they said they would give half that.”
As mentioned above, the grant from the city came in more than 20% smaller. Glassman said Pride may not even get the full $58,664 though since POTA continued to be downsized after the grant was approved Dec. 20.
The sponsorship problem has increased over the past few weeks as Midland/CAN and Tito’s vodka withdrew about $150,000 in financial and product support. That is generally attributed to SFGN’s investigation.
“The [sponsors] read the articles and asked it to be corrected. They feel like it wasn’t and that’s their decision,” Crawford said.
SFGN approached Martorell and/or others in Pride for comment before each story, and they declined to comment on the record.
People have been streaming out of Pride’s board and committees for months. Before Christmas, Clevenger announced he would leave after POTA. Others have left without much notice. Both board members from Midland/CAN resigned. Entertainment Director Shawn Palacious (aka Kitty Meow) left.
During our interview, 11 days before POTA, Crawford said FlockFest representatives would also follow suit.
“We were only in it to see the merger. Since
we are not merging, there’s no reason for us to be on the board. But we are committed to making sure this event happens.”
“After this, we’re done,” he said.
He indicated that he and Emanuel Santos (FlockFest’s treasurer and Pride’s co-treasurer) would stay on through POTA because of its importance to the community.
“I’m committed to making sure this event happens.”
However, that may have changed since the interview took place. SFGN heard rumors of Santos’ departure late last week and can now confirm he has left.
Many people in Pride and its orbit say many of the issues lie with its president, Miik Martorell. He has run the organization for years and steered it through the pandemic. But he is also accused of micromanaging.
The Nov. 2, 2022 memo calling out delays also said petty grievances were getting in the way of producing POTA, and not utilizing
people who have experience putting on large events.
“People have a skill set. They’re passionate about their job so let them do it. I agree with that.”
“I know there’s been frustration,” Crawford continued. “But I think with Miik, he’s been in control of this event for many, many years. People come in that are very qualified to do roles, so give them control. His personality is control.”
There’s also belief that Pride has grown so much and requires more attention.
“He’s very busy. I think he needs time to focus on that one area all the way down to the details. He has a lot on his plate.”
Crawford’s determination to keep POTA on track was clear in his voice.
“This event’s gonna happen.”
He wants it to be a success. But after a pandemic, delays, loss of sponsors and community support, what will constitute success?
“The fact that it’s happening makes it feel like it’s successful.”

I am a volunteer for children and women that have been abused. I also advocate for children and women. I run toy drives and occasional clothes drives. I also feed the homeless on the holidays!
I ran a safe house for over 27 years helping young women and children. I have also worked in the foster care system and have taken care of over 43 children in my home as well as provided an educational home for children all around the world with the exchange program.

One of the panelists is Ben Ryan, a journalist who covers LGBT health and issues for national outlets including the New York Times, NBC News and more. He talked with SFGN about issues specific to our community.
JOHN HAYDEN: I FIND WE OFTEN SPEND TIME CORRECTING MISINFORMATION, SUCH AS TELLING PEOPLE MPOX ISN’T A “GAY DISEASE” AND THAT THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A “GAY DISEASE.” WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES AND FRUSTRATIONS OF STARTING FROM THAT SPOT?
BEN RYAN: A bit of a pet peeve of mine, in fact, is the refrain “____ isn’t a gay disease.” When people say this, what they inadvertently do is perpetuate the notion that there is any such thing as a “gay disease.” I am determined to be specific and to use precise, dispassionate terms when describing the relative incidence of infectious disease among gay men compared with other groups.
MPox was overwhelmingly found in men who have sex with men. The key reason for this was that the virus was transmitted most readily via anal intercourse and had a short window when it was both infectious and not highly symptomatic. The only major subgroup of people who engage in behaviors, and who have an interconnected enough global social-sexual network to sustain a major global outbreak are men who have sex with men.
These are facts, and I don’t have a lot of patience for the pressure people put me under all summer trying to say I was homophobic or gay-hating for stating these facts. My job is not to massage the truth so it will land more gently. I need to get the facts to the public so they can
use them to make decisions about their lives and those of the people around them.
JH: OFTEN OUR OWN LGBT COMMUNITY IS UNDER MISCONCEPTIONS. WE’RE WELL INTO THE AGE OF “NEW MEDIA’’ TO THE POINT THAT IT REALLY ISN’T “NEW.” HOW CAN WE EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE TO OUR COMMUNITY?
BR: One thing I can say is I spent an inordinate amount of time on Twitter this summer, sick as a dog from chemotherapy, tweeting up a storm to battle the misinformation hounds who were so desperate to downplay the impact of Mpox on gay men and to exaggerate the risk to women, kids and health care workers.
I found that gay men really responded to my frankness, both on Twitter and in my reporting and op-ed writing. I was not for everyone. I infuriated quite a few people. One guy wrote a 5,000-word hit piece about me. But I got constant emails and DMs from guys all over the place who appreciated that I didn’t doll up the truth. I was brutally frank and gave them the information they needed as quickly as I could learn it from my sources.
JH: MENTAL HEALTH SYMPTOMS AND ISSUES ARE JUST AS SUBSTANTIVE AS PHYSICAL AILMENTS, BUT ARE OFTEN INVISIBLE AND CERTAINLY UNDER-DISCUSSED. HOW CAN JOURNALISTS IN GENERAL AND LGBT JOURNALS SPECIFICALLY DISCUSS MENTAL HEALTH?
BR: One of the studies I was most excited to cover was by John Pachankis, a leading LGBTQ+ psych researcher at Yale, who published a paper about the intraminority stress, as he called it, that gays put on each other: through sexual competitiveness, status consciousness related to money, and racism. In my own life, I’ve had it pretty easy where straight people are concerned. So I’ve always been particularly interested in delving into how hard it can be to be gay, because of other gay people. We can be really dreadful to one another.
I think the bottom line is I’m perfectly happy to
hold up a mirror to gay society and show us where we’ve got work to do. People get very angry that I air dirty laundry. But I don’t mind that they’re furious. I feel very strongly about this.
That said, we are also living in increasingly perilous times for anti-LGBT politicking, which is extremely disturbing to me and which I try hard to illuminate through my reporting.
JH: REPORTING ON THE TRANS COMMUNITY HAS INCREASED IN RECENT YEARS SINCE POLITICIANS BEGAN PUNCHING DOWN ON THE COMMUNITY, DENYING GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE, ETC. HOW CAN WE TALK TO THEM, ALLIES, AND ENEMIES?
BR: I interviewed George Santos in October and heard his reasons for supporting the “Don’t Say Gay” law. That was interesting.
One experience I can share is that I published an investigative piece for NBC that is partly to
do with anti-trans political efforts. I partnered with a non-binary colleague on the story and had them handle more of that angle while I focused on the HIV angle. We disagreed on nomenclature when it came to describing medical treatment for trans people. But I deferred to them because they’re the expert. I’m surely on a learning curve.
But I sure do think a lot about young queer kids who are scared and suffering and how I might do my part to try to make things better for them.
JH: HOW CAN WE BETTER ADDRESS THE HEALTH NEEDS OF LGBT YOUTH?
BR: It’s important to keep telling the stories of what these anti-LGBT efforts are doing to health care, school, books in the library, friendships, families, nursing homes, you name it. There are endless stories to tell. We need society to keep opening its mind to what it means to be different.
After years of pandemic-fueled delays, Pride of the Americas (POTA) is finally here. While circumstances have forced Pride Fort Lauderdale, the producers of the event, to change and adapt in a myriad of ways, it still expects to be a party people from throughout the hemisphere will be talking about for years to come.
The weekend begins Friday at Pride on the Drive in Wilton Manors. Two stages will be set up in the parking lot of the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. One will be outside Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar, the other in front of Hunters Nightclub.
The stage at Hunters will feature the long-awaited reunion of legendary DJ duo Thunderpuss. While he recently appeared on the soundtrack of the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, this will be their first performance together since the White Party in Miami nearly 19 years ago. Wilton Manors Business Association (WMBA) was instrumental in bringing them to South Florida. The show starts at 6 p.m. Admission is free but you need to register ahead of time.
The weekend hits its zenith on Saturday, starting with a parade down A1A to Las Olas before turning west and emptying into Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park. The
parade steps off at noon. Grand marshals will be Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Steve Glassman, business woman publisher Ina Lee, and trans activist and reality TV star Rajee Narinesingh.
At 1 p.m. the main party begins at the new location. Boy George is scheduled to headline the event in the evening and the party wraps up at 9 p.m. Talent ranging from drag entertainers to circus acts will take the stage throughout the day, all hosted by South Florida legend Kitty Meow.
Inside there will be lots of vendors. Many will be from the health industry and HIV care. Trans issues will be addressed at the Trans Pride section.
If you’re hungry, there will be fair food faves alongside regional delicacies. Viewing the parade is free. Tickets to the event at Promenade Park are $8 in advance and $10 at the park. Due to construction and limited parking, people are encouraged to use public transportation or ride share.
SUNDAY
The Pride Splash T-Dance Pool Party is Sunday afternoon in the heart of Fort Lauderdale Beach, at Rok Bar Day Club. It’s right behind the bar that faces A1A, but party guests are to use the entrance at 220 Almond Ave.
The fierce Prince Trilla will host afternoon in the sun, while DJ Alex Acosta and DJ Deanne keep the music going.

The first Pride was a riot. Many LGBT folks – especially BIPOC people of trans experience – were forced to defend themselves from the harassment and brutality of police and partook in a days-long rebellion in the streets of New York City. Those brave souls started a worldwide movement. Nowadays Pride is nothing more than a remnant of a remnant – a party without a purpose.
What does the LGBT community have to celebrate in Florida?
Gov. Ron DeSantis and his cronies have declared war on our community. They’re targeting every aspect of the LGBT alphabet from gender-affirming care for transgender youth to drag shows, and any gay men and allies who object - are branded as “groomers” – even high school students
DeSantis is winning.
There is no appeasing our hate-filled governor or today’s far-right conservatives. DeSantis won by 19 points in November – a landslide in Florida politics. It’s no wonder he feels so emboldened to push his bigotry down our throats.
We all know he’s not trying to protect children, or champion parental rights. As other stories have pointed out, he’s not targeting rated R movies or establishments like Hooters.
There’s no working with someone who isn’t operating in good faith. Give him an inch and he’ll take a thousand miles or more. His actions have stopped the progress of the LGBT community in Florida dead in its tracks.
He objected to a Black studies class because it included queer theory. He’s targeting books with LGBT characters and themes.
DeSantis’ tactics are scaring our allies into submission. He’s using his executive powers to silence and erase us while his allies in the legislature do his bidding.
DeSantis is winning.
Getting anything done on a statewide level in Florida was always an uphill battle, but we could at least count on our local leaders to champion our causes. No more.
In 2021 the school board in Miami-Dade voted 7-1 to recognize LGBT history month In 2022, they voted 8-1 against. In Broward we have a school board member speaking at anti-LGBT rallies and calling on the Proud Boys to “protect the children.”
Even our local LGBT leaders are negotiating with known homophobes
In 2021 conservatives were outraged over a school field trip to a local gay owned restaurant - despite the fact the trip took place before opening hours and the “racy” menu had been swapped out for a kid friendly version. The community, and our allies, rallied behind the establishment. In 2022 the annual field trip did not take place. Wonder why?
DeSantis is winning.
For years we counted on the courts to protect us, but that’s no longer guaranteed. Recently a court overturned our local bans against practicing conversion therapy on minors. The Supreme Court may very well allow certain businesses to discriminate against gay weddings. If that happens, rightwing conservatives will not stop there. They will most surely find new ways to discriminate against us.
But it can get worse.
In Tennessee, the state rejected millions in federal funds to combat HIV because some funds went to places like Planned Parenthood. The governor pledged to replace the money with state funds, but not target groups at substantial risk of the virus, including gay men and people who inject drugs.
In Arkansas, they’re attempting to ban drag from all public places. But the vaguely worded legislation could easily prevent any non-binary or trans person from performing.
In Oklahoma, the legislature is considering banning gender-affirming care for anyone under the age of 26.
Remember when conservatives told us they were just “protecting the children”? Don’t believe their talking points. These extremists are not operating in good faith.
I have no doubt DeSantis will look at these states for inspiration in order to find new ways to target our community.
DeSantis is winning.
We’re too busy planning parties, galas and more. But what do those things all mean when the government is stripping us of our rights?
Where are the LGBT-friendly businesses DeSantis has targeted? They’re silently negotiating a way to stay in business.
Now is the time to be loud and proud and bold. Instead we’re cowering in fear. Our leaders are looking for ways to appease DeSantis - to avoid his wrath. No one wants to be his next target.
DeSantis is winning.
How much will we give up before we decide as a community DeSantis has gone too far? What will it take?
DeSantis has already attempted to curtail our right to assemble and protest through an anti-riot law he championed after the Black Lives Matter protests. The ACLU called it the anti-peaceful protest law blasting it for being broad, vague and warned it would have a chilling effect. Luckily, a federal judge has blocked parts of the law from taking effect –for now.
DeSantis is winning. And we’re letting him.
I am reminded of the famous words of Martin Luther King Jr. who once said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
That proclamation wasn’t a call to nonaction, to do nothing. The universe may indeed bend towards justice, but only if we push it along.
King also said in that speech: “The battle is in our hands. And we can answer with creative nonviolence the call to higher ground to which the new directions of our struggle summons us. The road ahead is not altogether a smooth one. There are no broad highways that lead us easily and inevitably to quick solutions. But we must keep going.”
So when we “celebrate” this weekend just remember what the LGBT folks at the Stonewall Inn risked when they fought back against harassment, discrimination and bigotry – their lives and livelihoods.
Now ask yourself this: what are you willing to risk to protect future generations of LGBT people?
Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day to splurge on a luxurious meal or gift to show the recipient of your affection how much you care for them. If that’s true, those lucky folks who get taken to “A Night to Remember” at Atmo are really loved –or maybe they’re just lucky enough to be dating someone rich doesn’t have a problem spending $399 a person for dinner. Miquel Brown’s 1983 dance hit “So Many Men, So Little Time” is familiar gay anthem. South Florida theater audiences might find themselves with a similar dilemma as nearly all of the regional theater companies have competing shows running over the same weekend. Here are some of the options:
