PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Friends of St. Francis High School: The 2020-2021 school year was an incredible one at St. Francis High School! Knowing we are “Stronger Together,” in August 2020 we joyfully welcomed students for in-person learning using a cohort model. As the school year progressed, everyone— students, faculty, staff, coaches, parents—demonstrated tremendous commitment to student safety, well-being, and success—enabling the elimination of remote learning, cohorts, and the return to full 100% in-person learning for all students after Easter break.

President’s Council

Once again, the SFHS community rallied in ways ever new and provided arguably the most comprehensive in-person curricular and co-curricular activities in the region. From outdoor plays, an outdoor, all-school Mass for the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, in-person retreats, and the welcoming of visitors, we pushed past the boundaries of conventional thinking to keep students fully engaged in the classroom—the life of the school—and kept our beloved SFHS traditions alive! Our students continue to excel: a perfect score on the SAT, serving our neighbors in need, and winning athletic conference and regional championships. We ended the school year with a beautiful outdoor graduation on our home field!

If ever there is a time to be proud to be a Spartan, it is now! For the 4th year running, we earned recognition from Microsoft as a Showcase School (1 of only 39 schools in the U.S.). We were blessed to be the first high school in the Diocese of Joliet to welcome Bishop Ronald Hicks who celebrated Mass with us during Catholic Schools Week. We successfully earned reaccreditation, and our entire community came together to support the school through a virtual auction. All the while, we never lost sight of our future ambitions as outlined in our strategic plan: Preserving the Legacy. Building for the Future.

Principal’s Council

On behalf of all our students, faculty, and staff, I again extend my deep gratitude for your commitment to St. Francis High School. Your financial support for scholarships, programs, and the operational needs of the school is fundamental to our continued successes. God bless,

Board of Directors

CHAIRMAN'S LETTER Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of St. Francis High School, This past July, I began as chair of the Board of Directors. After witnessing the wonderful education and faith formation that my children received, I knew that it was important to give back. In fact, I can never really repay the blessings bestowed on my family from the St. Francis High School community. Last January, Bishop Ronald Hicks celebrated Mass at St. Francis High School and observed that he immediately felt the St. Francis spirit when he arrived. Everyone who visits the school feels the loving, welcoming atmosphere upon meeting our students, parents, teachers, and staff. When the school year began last year and other schools settled for remote learning, our teachers designed a hybrid curriculum with in-person learning to ensure that students stayed engaged. Even a pandemic could not diminish the ever-present St. Francis spirit! During this past year, the Board of Directors has been implementing the school’s ten-year Strategic Plan and finalizing a master building plan that will update and expand our facility. It is an exciting time for the school community as we support the expansion of the school facility and endowment and thereby ensure a quality Catholic education for many future Spartans. As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, I ask you to reflect on how St. Francis High School has touched your life. To ensure that future students encounter similar lifechanging experiences, please consider giving to the St. Francis Annual Fund, establishing a scholarship, or remembering the school in your estate plan. We can never repay the blessings received from belonging to the St. Francis High School community. Thank you for your continued support. Saint Francis, pray for us.

10-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN

For nearly 65 years, St. Francis High School has provided an outstanding Catholic education for students across the Western suburbs. The vision of 741 “founding families” in partnership with the Diocese of Joliet, the Institute of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Wheaton Franciscan Sisters, and Sisters from the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) that began in 1957 is alive and well today! Building on this great legacy, we look to the future with a bold vision: By 2030, St. Francis High School will be widely regarded as one of the top 4 Catholic high schools in Illinois. This vision and our new 10-year Strategic Plan—PRESERVING THE LEGACY. BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE.—are the culmination of a multi-year effort on the part of our Board, faculty and staff, and specialized experts to ensure a lasting future for SFHS.

On June 14, global architectural firm Perkins & Will led 25 alumni, parents, faculty, and friends through a workshop on the development of the Campus Master Plan.

FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS

A Gift of Real Impact

ST. FRANCIS ANNUAL FUND Philanthropic support is integral to the success of St. Francis High School. During the 2020-2021 fiscal year, gifts totaling $588,257 were made to the St. Francis Annual Fund. These gifts provided critical, unrestricted dollars for the school’s operating expenses, such as capital or programmatic enhancements, technology upgrades, tuition assistance, faculty and staff professional development and more. These gifts are flexible and can be used where and when they are needed most, helping to cover the deficit between tuition charged and the actual cost to educate a SFHS student.

Holiday Shop & Dine & Cook’s Night Out

Due to COVID restrictions the St. Francis Mothers’ Club quickly and creatively pivoted from the annual Festival of Fashion to create the Spartan Holiday Shop & Dine. They also began a monthly Cook’s Night Out where local restaurants participated by donating a portion of their proceeds to SFHS. All together $4,162 was raised through these efforts.

Class of 2021 Endowment Fund This spring, a group of parents of graduating seniors partnered with SFHS to lead an initiative designed to strengthen the endowment. By establishing the Class of 2021 Endowment Fund, these parents created a tribute to their graduating seniors and provided a way for them to give back to SFHS throughout their lives. The Class of 2021 Endowment Fund raised $40,192 and has become part of the permanent endowment of St. Francis High School. Any income from the fund would be used to support the school in future years. We are incredibly grateful to the parents who established and contributed to the Class of 2021 Endowment Fund.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

We are grateful for our school volunteers who were essential to the success of our fundraising efforts this year. A sincere THANK YOU for their tireless effort and meaningful support. 6 | Annual Report 2020-21AnnualReport_v4.indd 8

The Spartan Classic September 25, 2020

The 2020 Spartan Classic was held at Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton. SFHS combined the school’s two golf outings – the Alumni Association’s Spartan Classic with the Spirit & Pride Golf Outing, for a sold-out event. This annual golf outing is a true community event supported by alumni, current parents, alumni parents, and friends. Through the efforts of our golfers, sponsors, and volunteers a total of $78,055.79 was raised for tuition assistance. Thank you to golf committee chairs Mike Armbrust ’88 and Todd Shaw ’89 for another successful golf outing.

#Giving Tuesday December 1, 2020 The SFHS community came together to raise $33,688.00 on #GivingTuesday. 184 donors including alumni, parents, students, faculty/ staff and friends participated in this global day of giving. #GivingTuesday 2020 saw both an increase in the number of gifts received as well as a 25% increase in dollars raised.

Please join us on Friday, September 16, 2022 for the 33rd Spartan Classic at Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton.

Ensuring Our Future Auction April, 17, 2021

The annual auction is St. Francis High School’s signature fundraising event. This year the event had a twist… it was VIRTUAL! Spartan alumni, parents and friends gathered at small viewing parties hosted throughout the community to celebrate and support SFHS. Many others from near and far, supported remotely. Bidders participated in the silent auction, raffle and enjoyed a LIVE broadcast program that included the SFHS Jazz Band, a video montage, and Live Auction. The 2021 Auction included a Fund a Cause: Sight, Sound & Memory – to improve campus nerve centers with additional security cameras, a new phone system and data backup system. In total, the 2021 Virtual Ensuring Our Future Auction netted $308,230.07 thanks to the generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends. Each year we remember our deceased alumni during a Memorial Mass held in early November. Due to COVID19 restrictions, the 2020 mass was celebrated on November 2 and streamed from the St. Clare Chapel. While we could not gather in person, we continued this cherished tradition by bringing the Alumni Memorial Mass to our community via a live stream. Memorial Mass Cards are available throughout the year and all donations made in memory of a loved one benefit the students. Names are written in the Book of Intentions and remembered in the prayers of the St. Francis High School community during our monthly liturgies.
