Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, The Miami Heat We at the South Florida Jewish Home are fortunate to meet many great and fascinating people. We are privileged to know Sammy Schulman, who can be seen almost any Sunday at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center in Broward County. Sammy is a truly remarkable person who demonstrates to others the importance of giving back. He has opened the door to the Miami Heat in an effort to support those in need in our community. His time and effort are greatly appreciated. Now, get to know the Miami Heat’s CFO.
Mourning, Udonis Haslem and Dwyane Wade. I am a big fan of all of these guys because they not only always gave 100% on the court but, without exception, these great players were also always involved in giving back to the community. What was your Jewish life like growing up? - I grew up in Louisville, KY. There were about 10,000 Jews in Louisville, so it was a very small, close- knit community. We only had one JCC, compared to the numerous Jewish Community Centers we have down here in South Florida. It was great because you honestly felt like you knew all of the Jewish Kids growing up since the JCC was a very central place for both social interaction and sporting events. We did everything there. I have some of my fondest childhood memories involving activities that went on at the JCC in Louisville.
Where are you from? – I grew up in Louisville, KY Where did you go to school? – I went to the University of Texas, graduated in '82 When did you move to Florida? – I moved here in November 1987? What did you do before you started working for The Heat? – Before joining The Heat, I was an Audit Manager with the International Accounting Firm, Peat Marwick, in Dallas, TX. When did you join the Heat? – I was hired as one of the original employees of the Miami Heat in November 1987.
What's the best part of the job? – Actually, I love every aspect of my job. I love basketball. I am able to combine my CPA with my passion for sports. Also, the games are great because I am able to somewhat relax and be a fan like everyone else. Do you have a lot of player interaction – I see the players often, just not on an everyday basis. What's your greatest Heat memory? - I actually have a few great memories with The Heat. Opening Night was magical with everyone in Tuxedos in November 1988. Another special moment for me was our first ever home playoff game against the Bulls, to this day still the loudest arena I have ever been in, including the finals. Of course, winning the title in 2006 was very exciting for me and the entire organization. Who are some of your favorite players, off the court and on? - All of my favorite players are, of course, Heat Players, including Grant Long, Glen Rice, Steve Smith, Tim Hardaway, Alonzo
Why is being Jewish important to you? – Being Jewish has always played a large role in my life because it is our Heritage. We have been blessed to have been born Jewish with all of the history and traditions that go along with it. Growing up in Kentucky, where there were not a ton of Jews, I actually always felt special and not different. There was definitely some antiSemitism, but again that did not make me unhappy, only stronger in beliefs and pride. What are your Jewish activities? - I am on the Board of Directors of the Broward County Jewish Federation and I coach basketball at the JCC on Sundays. I also coach the Maccabi basketball team. Why the Federation?- I grew up watching my parents always involved in giving back and they were involved in the Federation in Louisville and it had an impact on me. Once I was an adult with children of my own I felt it was very important to not only be involved because of all of the great things that the Federation does but also to show my children that it is important to give back to the community. We are all so fortunate and there are so many people in need that to not be involved would be a real shame. Why the JCC? - As I mentioned earlier, I basically grew up at the JCC in Louisville. I played all of my sports at the JCC, as well as being involved in AZA and BBYO, which took place at the JCC. It was such an important part of my life. I really enjoy being around all of the kids and coaching basketball, especially as it has been a really great way to ingratiate my son into the culture. He has been playing here since he was 5 and he is now 14. He just coached his first team of 1st and 2nd graders this past season.

Although the mysterious explosions in Iran, the brutality in Syria and the unrest in Egypt dominate our news feeds, fans of the NBA have been sitting on the edge of their seats awaiting news of the end of the lockout. And, while we certainly have stories to share about Iran, Egypt and Syria, we would be remiss in fulfilling our obligations to our readers if we did not provide you with a One on One conversation with one of the Miami Heat's most prominent fans, someone who is no stranger to the basketball courts of the Posnack Jewish Community Center in Davie, Sammy Schulman. In our continuing efforts to introduce our readership to inspiring Jewish leaders, we also present a One on One interview with real estate developer and automobile aficionado, Michael Dezer, who has single-handedly forever changed the landscape of Sunny Isles.

And, while Art Basel attracts thousands of art-lovers to Miami, we share with you a truly inspirational Jewish artist, Aron Weiner. Through his captivating photography, Mr. Weiner has captured the essence of European Jewry and preserved vital evidence of Jewish life for future generations. Also, in the arts, we are excited about the December 24th South Florida arrival of "Soul Doctor," the story of the late Shlomo Carlebach, who touched thousands of lives and souls as a prolific Rabbi and musical entertainer. His songs were soulful and joyous, and he traveled the world influenced by and playing with musical artists of many genre, from gospel singer Nina Simone to Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. Now, Tony

Award winning producers, lyricists and writers have brought his story to the stage, incorporating over 30 of his songs in a hilarious, riveting, toe-tapping tale. It is being billed as the greatest Jewish musical since Fiddler on the Roof. Once you've read Broadway Bound (p. 27), you won't want to miss the opportunity to see Soul Doctor, -Dec. 24-Jan. 29, in Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale -- before its Broadway debut. A very special thanks goes out to graphic artist Rivkie Stall of Boca Raton for her designing this issue's captivating cover. As the UN and the world continue to champion the Palestinian cause and criticize Israel for daring to exist, we share a wonderful letter from an Israeli soldier that demonstrates why the IDF is the most humane, sensitive and caring military force in the world. There are numerous examples of Israelis traveling the world to offer critical aid to victims of natural disasters such as the Haitian earthquake, Japanese Tsunami and even the Turkish earthquake. With the rare exception of brave souls like Glenn Beck, the general media rarely covers stories of Jewish caring such as Israeli surgeons saving the lives of hundreds of Palestinian children or offering humanitarian aid to countries who would much rather see Israel wiped off the map. We, at the South Florida Jewish Home, are proud to share stories of Jewish and Israeli excellence. We hope they make you proud as well. Please enjoy our local, national and world news and support our advertisers so we can continue to provide you with the quality publication that the South Florida Jewish community deserves.

Israel Israel Sets World Record ■
The record for largest chemistry lesson in a single venue, which is a separate category, was set in Belgium with 562 participants earlier this year.
PA: Israel is Incapacitating Us Palestinian Prime Minister, Salam Fayyad, says that the Palestinian Authority is “fast approaching the point of being completely incapacitated” by Israel’s refusal to hand over tax revenues belonging to the Palestinian Authority. He said that Israel’s freeze on taxes and fees it collects at the borders for the PA is almost two-thirds of the PA’s normal revenue and the fact that Israel is withholding the money is making it hard for the PA to pay salaries and fix infrastructure. “This is our money,” he said. “It has nothing to do with donor assistance or anything like that.” Israel imposed this policy a day after UNESCO granted full membership to the Palestinians. Fayyad spoke at a press conference alongside Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere who demanded that Israel lift the injunction. Stoere said, “It amounts to waterboarding an economy because you almost kill it while allowing a small amount of air to come in.” Israel is withholding the funds temporarily and says that the Palestinians are unwilling to have direct peace talks with them. Palestinian leaders say they will only talk if Israel halts settlement activity.
Buy Israel Week: November 28December 4 Coming on the heels of Black Friday, Jewish newspapers, pro-Israel groups, Israeli companies and retailers are joining together to l
Iranian Defense Minister General Ahmad Vahidi has some strong words for Israel. According to Vahidi, if Israel were to launch any military action against Iran, Israel would be attacked with 150,000 missiles. He added, “Iran is not Iraq or Afghanistan, if the Americans make the mistake and attack Iran, we will show them how to fight…Israel has to be punished for what it has done to the Muslims in Palestine and Lebanon." launch the first Buy Israel Week. A special website, www.buyisraelweek.com, is featuring deals, coupons and contests on Israeli products from November 28th-December 4th. Frances Zelazny, a New York marketer who organized the campaign, said that the idea was born when she saw the ongoing campaign by pro-Palestinian activists to boycott Israeli goods. “Not everyone can fly to Israel, or march on Congress, or rally at the UN,” Zelazny said. But people can purchase Israeli products, spur the economy and support Israel in that way. Malcolm Hoenlein, the executive vice president of the Presidents Conference, supports the effort. “This is a significant movement because of the growing BDS efforts and the pressures on some Israel goods. We felt it’s important to have a positive effort.” BDS is the movement calling for the boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Some of the participating businesses, such as Ahava, have been the targets of BDS campaigns. Other retailers, which have been targeted as well, chose not to participate in Buy Israel Week so as not to attract attention to themselves. Jodi Samuels, the co-founder of jdeal which is one of the sponsors of Buy Israel Week, said, “There were some national retailers which had previously been targeted by BDS campaigns, they were nervous about joining the campaign and would rather stay under the radar.” Zelazny adds that the campaign is not just about Israeli products during Buy Israel Week. It’s about creating a new awareness, a new outlook. “The promotion of Israel products isn’t just economical, it’s psychological and political. People see that Israel isn’t isolated; you see the breadth of creativity, the range of products from food to high-tech… There are really some amazing food and consumer items. Instead of buying excellent Chilean wine, they can buy wine from Israel. We want people to next time not buy shoes made in Italy, but in Israel.”
Earlier this week, a senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said Iran would target NATO’s missile defense shield in Turkey if either the US or Israel would attack Iran.
‘Mysterious Explosion Damaged Iranian Nuclear Site’ The explosion earlier this week that Iran said was at a uranium enrichment site actually damaged a nuclear plant and was far from accidental, The London Times reported Wednesday. The newspaper quoted Israeli intelligence officials as saying that satellite photos revealed extensive damage from the explosion at Isfahan, near Tehran. The Israeli sources, so far unconfirmed, added that smoke was seen pouring out from a conversion plant and that it was clear that the blast was not accidental. The government-controlled Fars News Agency had claimed that the explosion was caused by a military exercise, after having initially denied any incident took place. Two week ago, an explosion at a military base that killed a top general and 16 others also resulted in extensive damage, according to published satellite images. The Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security told The New York Times, “It was pretty amazing to see that the entire facility was destroyed. There were only a few buildings left standing.”The institute’s report author Paul Brannan added that his sources indicated the explosion occurred during work that was supposed to be “a major milestone in the development of a new missile.”One of the casualties was Gen. Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, founder of Iran’s missile program, and the explosion appeared to take place at a missile base

Israel has set a Guinness World Record for holding the largest chemistry lesson. On September 22, Israel’s Science and Technology Ministry organized a class in 13 locations with 4,207 participants. They reenacted an experiment performed in space by Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon who died in the 2003 Columbia space shuttle disaster. Ministry director Menachem Greenblum says the feat “brings additional world honor to Israel as a scientific powerhouse.”

International News Kuwait’s Prime Minister Resigns It seems as if every week this headline resurfaces in another country around the globe. Now, in concert with other nations around it, Kuwait’s cabinet has resigned after opposition and protesters demanded that the prime minister, Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, step down. The demand was spurred by allegations of corruption. Kuwait TV reported, "The prime minister has submitted his resignation to the emir." Khaled al-Sultan, an opposition member, said, "We are waiting for the appointment of a new prime minister before parliament is dissolved in order to be assured of fair elections.” Sheikh Nasser was due in parliament to answer questions of fraud, including questions of the transfer of public funds to his personal, overseas account. "I hope that the emir will please the Kuwaiti people by dissolving parliament ... and forming a transitional cabinet to supervise the elections," opposition MP Falah al-Sawwagh told reporters. Sheikh Nasser was appointed in February 2006 and has resigned seven times; parliament was dissolved three times since then.
was removed from Apple’s online App store and the lawsuit was dropped. The app designer, Johann Levy, said that developed the app to be “recreational … as a Jew myself I know that in our community we often ask whether a such-and-such celebrity is Jewish or not.” He did not intend for it to be considered a racial application. Under French penal code, it is a violation punishable by a five-year jail sentence to stock personal details of a person, including race, political leanings or religious affiliation without consent.
Sarkozy: What I Said Was Out of Context In an effort, to explain recent comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, French President Nicolas Sarkozy told leaders of the French Jewish community that his words were “taken out of context.” Earlier this month at the G20 Summit, Sarkozy admitted to President Obama in a private conversation, “I cannot bear Netanyahu, he’s a liar.” Sarkozy told the Jewish community leaders that he has a strong relationship with Netanyahu and his family and expressed a desire to move beyond the misunderstanding. He also reaffirmed his friendship and support for the state of Israel. Additionally, Sarkozy was to have provided explanations for his recent remarks, but asked those present not to publicize them.
Cairo: “Kill All Jews” at Rally in Mosque A prayer service in a prominent mosque in Cairo on Friday turned into an anti-Israel Muslim Brotherhood rally. Around 5,000 people joined the rally and vowed to “battle against Jerusalem’s Judaization.” Speakers spewed venomous statements against the “Zionist occupiers” and “treacherous Jews.” Dr. Ahmed al-Tayeb, a speaker at the rally, told the crowd, “In order to build Egypt, we must be one. Politics is insufficient. Faith in Allah is the basis for everything. The al-Aqsa Mosque is currently under an offensive by the Jews…we shall not allow the Zionists to Judaize al-Quds (Jerusalem.) We are telling Israel and Europe that we shall not allow even one stone to be moved there.” Spokesmen from the Muslim Brotherhood as well as Palestinian speakers called for jihad and for the liberation of Palestine. “One day we shall kill all the Jews,” a quote from the Koran, was quoted again and again. Worshippers were given flags, with Egypt’s flag on one side and the Palestinian flag on the other as they left the rally.
France: “Jew or not Jew?” App Removed A app entitled “Jew or not Jew?” released in September incited a lawsuit by French anti-racism groups. The app allowed users to enter a celebrity or public figure’s name and would inform the user if the person was Jewish or not. Last week, the app
Syrian Troops Kill 256 Children According to a recent UN report, Syrian forces have killed at least 256 children and have committed “crimes against humanity” since anti-government protests have erupted in March. The 39-page document includes testimony from unidentified “reliable sources.” One source recalls seeing an officer shooting a two-year-old girl because he did not want her to grow up to be a demonstrator. According to a report issued by the UN earlier this month, 3,500 people have been killed by Syrian forces. The Syrian government denies this figure and says that around 600 people have been killed and that many of its security personnel were the victims of “armed terrorist gangs.” The report states: “State forces shot indiscriminately at unarmed protesters. Most were shot in the upper body, including in the head." Security forces were commanded to shoot protesters without warning. "In some instances, however, commanders ordered protesters to disperse and issued warnings prior to opening fire. In some cases, non-lethal means were used prior to or at the same time as live ammunition." Snipers were responsible for many deaths and in some cases people were killed and tortured in Homs military hospital by those dressed as doctors.
The Arab League has imposed unprecedented economic sanctions on Syria because of its refusal to accept observers to protect civilians. Britain condemned Syria and the "horrific and shocking actions carried out by the Assad regime against its own civilian population.”
Putin: Don’t Mess With Our Elections At a recent rally for Putin in anticipation of the upcoming elections, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is running for President, warned the west not to interfere with the upcoming elections. "All our foreign partners need to understand this: Russia is a democratic country, it's a reliable and predictable partner with which they can and must reach agreement but on which they cannot impose anything from the outside," he told those who attended. After leading the country for two terms, Putin stepped down as president in 2008 and gave up his seat to President Dmitry Medvedev. But as prime minister, he is still seen as wielding major power, and will be undoubtedly be the winner in the upcoming presidential election. Putin’s party, United Russia, has seen its approval ratings drop and is expected to lose the two-thirds majority that it currently has. In his speech, Putin promised the country stability and said that Russia needs a “stable political system” to guarantee “stable development” for the future. He promised to maintain a steady course to build “a strong, rich and prosperous Russia” and pledged to make it easier to do business in Russia. He also said he plans on bolstering the military. “In the next five to 10 years we must take our armed forces to a qualitatively new level. Of course, this will require big spending ...but we must do this if we want to defend the dignity of our country, if we want to protect our sovereignty and independence, protect Russian citizens,” he said. The 11,000 delegates who attended the event chanted, “The people trust and Putin!” and “Putin, Putin” during his address.
Financial News NJ: Food Stamp Recipients Double in Just Four Years According to recent data, the number of New Jersey residents who receive food stamps benefits is at its highest level in a decade and has doubled in just four years. More than 400,000 households and nearly 822,000 people were enrolled in the food stamps program since September—that’s nearly one out ten residents in New Jersey that receives assistance. New Jersey is one of the nation’s wealthiest states—it was ranked number two in household income last year—but it is far from immune from the economic crisis.
11
Part of the reason for the increase in recipients receiving coverage is that the requirement for receiving benefits has recently changed. Formally, the state offered benefits to those who earned 130 percent above the federal poverty level or below; currently, the requirement states that those who earn 185 percent above the poverty level are eligible as well. A family of four earning $41K is now eligible for the program. Public awareness for the benefits have increased and the application process has been streamlined, making it easier for residents to apply for the benefits. Cecilia Zalkind, executive director of Advocates for Children of New Jersey, says, "It’s positive in that more families are accessing that assistance — it’s very important. But it also speaks to increased need. More families need it, more families are eligible, and that’s certainly a result of the economic downturn."
Richmond Party to A u di t ed
Te a be
Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones recently allowed Occupy Richmond protesters to convene if Kanawha Plaza for two weeks. He visited them in the park and also had the city provide the protesters with services such as public toilets and trash pickup. This is not normal procedure. When Richmond Tea Partiers hold rallies, they pay for all services, including park fees and permits, public restrooms and police protection. The Richmond Tea Party recently delivered an invoiced to the
And now, the Tea Party is being audited. According to Cynthia Carr, Field Auditor for the City of Richmond, the Tea Party is delinquent in filing of Admissions, Lodging, and Meals Taxes with the city and as such the group is being audited. The Tea Party completes a form monthly, as required, and because they do not charge admission or fees, generally do not have much to complete on the forms. The story is Richmond is just a sample of what will be going on in the country in the next few weeks. Members of Tea Parties across the nation have seen disparity in the laws and fees that have been applied to Tea Party rallies and Occupy protest camps. Tea Partiers are vowing to fight the inequality and unequal treatment under the law.
NYC: Record Number of Tourists Visit the Big Apple In a recent speech in the new Z NYC Hotel in Long Island City, Mayor Bloomberg said the number of tourists visiting the Big Apple may even top last year’s record of 48.8 million. He said it’s possible that over 50 million tourists will visit New York this year. “New York is the happening place and if you get that…going, you gotta be careful not to lose it,” he said. New York’s hotel occupancy hovers around 85%, the highest in the nation, and the number of hotel rooms in NYC since he took office has increased by half.
Down-and-Out Broke Truck Driver with No Teeth Doesn’t Win $254.2 Million Lotto This is exactly what usually doesn’t happen: three wealth managers from Greenwich, Connecticut just got a lot richer by winning the $254.2 million Powerball jackpot. The seasoned investors, Greg Skidmore, Brandon Lacoff and Tim Davidson, paid $1 for the ticket and netted an after-tax lump sum of $103,586,824.51. The ticket was purchased by Davidson on Novem-
ber 2nd, however went unclaimed until the three came for ward after Thanksgiving weekend. Lottery officials had used billboards across the state to urge the ticket holder to come forward as the weeks went by without a winner. According to their attorney, on the night of the drawing their celebration was temporarily dashed when a local TV station put the wrong Powerball number on the TV screen, leading them to believe that they were one number off. However, the station fixed the error within an hour, confirming that, in fact, the three had won. At a news conference, the three men promised that Connecticut charities would benefit from the windfall. "These numbers are huge. This is going to benefit many people," said the group’s attorney. It remains to be seen whether a new movement will spring up, calling themselves The Occupy The Three Rich Connecticut Lotto Winners Movement.
Feds Seize 150 “Counterfeit” Sites On Cyber Monday, a day equated with online shopping, federal authorities announced the seizure of 150 domain names. The websites were those that were accused of selling counterfeit or pirated goods. The operation, named Operation in Our Sites, was launched in June 2010 and has since seized 350 domains. When consumers visit the websites, they are greeted by a banner that states that the site is under federal investigation and that copyright infringement is a federal crime. ICE Director John Morton said, “More and more Americans are doing their holiday shopping online, and they may not realize that purchasing counterfeit goods results in American jobs lost, American business profits stolen and American consumers receiving substandard products. The ramifications can be even greater because the illicit profits made from these types of illegal ventures often fuel other kinds of organized crime.” In part of the investigation, federal officials purchased items from the sites that were suspected of selling counterfeit goods. In most cases, the products were shipped to the United States from overseas.
NBA Season Saved at the Buzzer Up until last week it seemed like NBA fans would not get to watch basketball this year. But after a 149-day lockout that cost players and owners hundreds of millions in lost revenue, the two sides agreed to a new labor deal that essentially gives the owners and players a 50-50 split of league revenue, while also placing tougher luxury taxes on teams with high payrolls and mandating that players be signed to shorter contracts. The season will start on December 25th and will play a shortened 66-game season. continued on Page 15

mayor for costs incurred during recent rallies. Since the city seemed to be fitting the bill for these sort of events, the Tea Party felt that it should be compensated for previous out-ofpocket costs. But the mayor did not seem to agree. When representatives of the Tea Party attended a recent city council meeting to speak with the mayor, the mayor left before they had a chance to speak.

This week in news
The owners seem to have won the battle, as under the old agreement, players got 57% of league revenue, as opposed to the 50% that they are now getting. Considering the fact that the average NBA player gets a bi-weekly paycheck of approximately $250,000, many have predicted that the players would cave once they realized that if they don’t reach an agreement, they would not be getting those checks. In an effort to save face, many on the players’ side are saying that they could have actually been forced to take a worse deal than they did. However, as Ben Golliver of CBS Sports said, "Any time you leave a negotiation thinking that, you lost that negotiation." Some players—who must have really needed the money— actually went to China to play this season, as they didn’t believe that the lockout would end. As of now, it seems like they will be unable to get out of their contracts and will not be able return to the NBA until the completion of the Chinese basketball season at the end of March.
Pepper Spray and Billions Spent on Black Friday This year’s holiday shopping season seems to be off to a strong start as retail sales over Thanksgiving weekend were up 16.4 percent over last year and American consumers spent a record $52.4 billion. According to the National Retail Federation, shoppers spent $398.62 on average, up from $365.34 a year earlier. Wall Street took this as a sign that the American consumer may be feeling positive about the economy again. On Cyber Monday, the Dow Jones gained nearly 300 points based on the shopping news. However, not all see this as a sign that the worse is behind us. While acknowledging that it’s nice to have good sales rather than poor sales, Mark Zandi, chief economist with Moody's Analytics, said, “I don't generally place a lot of weight on
Black Friday sales.” Others point out that the last strong Black Friday took place in 2008, during the heart of the recession. It is also possible that people are having "recession fatigue" and used Black Friday as a day to forget their money woes and loosen their wallets for a change.
ians and invade privacy. “By definition, small drones are easy to conceal and fly without getting a lot of attention,” said John Villasenor, a UCLA professor and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Center for Technology Innovation. “Bad guys know this.”
As always, some shoppers were overly eager to grab the door-busters. At a Los Angeles Walmart, a woman pepper-sprayed approximately 20 other shoppers in order to get to the discounted Xbox video game consoles before them. She is what police are now calling a “competitive shopper.”
Additionally, the FAA is working on new aviation rules for small drones in January to prevent accidents in the skies. “It’s going to happen,” said Dan Elwell, vice president of civil aviation at the Aerospace Industries Assn. “Now it’s about figuring out how to safely assimilate the technology into national airspace.”
A more serious gut-wrenching event took place at a Target in West Virginia when a 61-year-old man collapsed and later died while doing some Black Friday shopping, as nearby bargain hunters continued to shop. One witness said that fellow shoppers, seemingly unconcerned, simply walked around the many lying on the floor. An ER nurse and an offduty paramedic who happened to be among the crowd eventually tried to administer CPR until the ambulance arrived and attempted to revive the man, but to no avail.
Drones to Inhabit the Sky Drone aircraft, most famous for their role in hunting down terrorists in Afghanistan, may soon be flying the friendly skies. Police agencies see drones as a wonderful asset to seek runaway criminals. Utility companies say drones can be essential to their companies by monitoring oil, gas and water pipelines. Farmers say drones can assist them with spraying crops with pesticides. Police currently use helicopters to spot criminals on the move. Helicopters can cost police departments millions of dollars. But drones will cost only around $40K and at 5 ½ lbs, they can fit in the trunk of a car. Opponents of the technology are fearful that the new technology can get in the hands of the wrong people who will use them to spy on civil-
American Airlines Files Chapter 11 America’s third-largest carrier, American Airlines, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. It said that it will continue to operate normally, honor tickets, and that its frequent flier program was still in effect. Newly-appointed Chairman and CEO Thomas W. Horton said, “The path ahead will be hard. But it's a well-worn path. American expects to continue normal business operations throughout the reorganization process, and the business will continue to be operated by the company's management.” Many of American Airlines’ competitors, such as Delta, Northwest and United, have filed for bankruptcy in the past to address issues with costs and debts. Last month, the airline reported a third-quarter loss of $162 million due to higher jet fuel prices. "This was a difficult decision, but it is the necessary and right path for us to take - and take now - to become a more efficient, financially stronger, and competitive airline," Horton said in a statement. The airline pilots union called the bankruptcy a “somber occasion.” “While today’s news was not entirely unexpected, it is nevertheless disappointing that we find ourselves working for an airline that has lost its way,” Allied Pilots Association President Captain Dave Bates said in a statement.

That’s Odd Cold Cash
As she has done before, Sarah Abraham of Williamburgh, NY bought two containers of Häagen-Dazs chocolate ice cream at a nearby store last week. But when she tried to enjoy her cold treat, she tasted something that wouldn’t melt in her mouth…a dime! “I had a bad taste and I spat it out. I felt something in my mouth and the ice cream didn’t have a good taste from the start. Two hours later, I still felt a metallic taste in my mouth,” she said. Her husband, Isaac Abraham, called the company to complain. The Duane Reade where she bought the product emptied the store shelves of its Häagen-Dazs batch just to be safe. A Häagen-Dazs representative said that the company “apologizes for her experience,” adding that finding a foreign object in chocolate ice cream is “highly unusual.” The ice cream passes through a metal detector before it is sent out, so a dime in the ice cream should be detected prior to shipment. As for Sarah, this dime has scared her for good. “I don’t want to eat it anymore,” she
Rental Woes Jimmy McMillan is certainly an interesting figure. He ran under the “The Rent is Too…High” party in the recent elections, and, irony of ironies, he lives in a rent-stabilized apartment in St. Marks Place in New York. But his rent-is-not-too-high apartment may not be his for too much longer if he doesn’t hand over certain financial documents that his landlord has demanded of him. McMillan said that handing over those documents is an invasion of his privacy. A Manhattan judge agrees, but says that failure to hand over the documents can lead to his eviction. The landlord wants to see those documents to prove that McMillan doesn’t really live at the apartment. McMillan admitted that he often sleeps at a Brooklyn home instead of the Manhattan apartment he says he shares with his 32-yearold son, but he insists he has a good reason for doing so.
Home on the Range If you’re looking for a home that will definitely invite the curious stares of those passing by, I have the home for you. Located on top of a volcano (!), this home in Newberry Springs, CA is selling for just $250K. The home actually sits on top of the cinder cone of a volcano, so there is no danger to inhabitants. The shape was inspired by a nuclear power plant in California back in 1968. The home has been listed since 2009, with no drop in price and no buyers either. It’s no wonder. There are no neighbors for miles; it has
two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a rooftop observation deck with a 360° view and 60 acres of land. Talk about living life in voluntary confinement.
An Unheard of Arrest A deaf man in Colorado was held in jail for 25 days because officials failed to communicate with him. Timothy Siaki was arrested after a noise complaint was made against him in a motel he and his fiancée were staying in. Siaki is deaf and does not read or write English and does not read lips. He uses sign language to communicate with others. He and his fiancée were arguing and were making verbal sounds when the complaint was called in. Police arrested him when he failed to respond to them. His fiancée, Kimberlee Moore, tried to explain that she was OK, but she was not provided with an interpreter to help her communicate. Neither was Siaki; and so, for 25 days, he was held in jail without any communication, not even knowing the charges against him. A lawsuit is being filed against the US District Court for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and for not providing him with a sign-language interpreter.
XXXXX People truly are good. After nearly 70 years, an elderly man in Seattle repaid, with interest, the cash he says he stole in the 1940s from a Sears store. The unidentified gentleman, who hand-delivered $100 in an envelope marked, “Sears manager,” included a note in the package. He wrote that he stole $20-$30 from the cash register years ago and wanted to pay back his debt. The manager, Gary Lorentson, said he thinks that the man’s conscience “has been bothering him for the past 60 years.” The store plans on using the returned funds towards helping needy families during the holiday.

On a Roll Three South Florida conmen swindled senior citizens out of $1 million worth of toilet paper and other products. The trio, who worked for FBK Products, told their victims over the phone that according to new government regulations, they would need to purchase special toilet paper, detergent and soap for their septic tanks. They also convinced their victims to purchase a $199 Septic Remedy treatment which would eliminate the need to have their septic tanks pumped. Some of those who were duped bought over 70 years worth of toilet paper after being told that FBK was affiliated with the EPA, USDA and USFDA. The EPA stated that the government does not regulate septic tanks or their products. I guess you can say, that prior to being caught, these guys were truly on a roll…
Svetlana Alliluyeva, who was known as Lana Peters since 1970, died of colon cancer Nov. 22 in Wisconsin, a state where she lived off and on after becoming a U.S. citizen, said Richland County Coroner Mary Turner. Her defection in 1967 — which she said was partly motivated by the poor treatment of her late husband, Brijesh Singh, by Soviet authorities — caused an international furor and was a public relations coup for the U.S. But Alliluyeva, who left behind two children, said her identity involved more than just switching from one side to the other in the Cold War. She even moved back to the Soviet Union in the 1980s, only to return to the U.S. more than a year later. Alliluyeva (pronounced ah-lih-lu-YAY'-vah) carried with her a memoir she had written in 1963 about her life in Russia. "Twenty Letters to a Friend," was published within months of her arrival in the U.S. and became a best-seller. When she left the Soviet Union in 1966 for India, she planned to leave the ashes of her late third husband, an Indian citizen, and return. Instead, she walked unannounced into the U.S. embassy in New Delhi and asked for political asylum. After a brief stay in Switzerland, she flew to the U.S. Upon her arrival in New York City continued on page 18

"I switched camps from the Marxists to the capitalists," she recalled in a 2007 interview for the documentary "Svetlana About Svetlana." But she said her identity was far more complex than that and never completely understood.
Stalin's Daughter continued from page 16 in 1967, the 41-year-old said: "I have come here to seek the self-expression that has been denied me for so long in Russia." She said she had come to doubt the communism she was taught growing up and believed there weren't capitalists or communists, just good and bad human beings. She had also found religion and believed "it was impossible to exist without God in one's heart." In the book, she recalled her father, who died in 1953 after ruling the nation for 29 years, as a distant and paranoid man. Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin denounced her as a "morally unstable" and "sick person" and added, "We can only pity those who wish to use her for any political aim or for any aim of discrediting the Soviet country."
"People say, 'Stalin's daughter, Stalin's daughter,' meaning I'm supposed to walk around with a rifle and shoot the Americans. Or they say, 'No, she came here. She is an American citizen.' That means I'm with a bomb against the others. No, I'm neither one. I'm somewhere in between. That 'somewhere in between' they can't understand." The defection came at a high personal cost. She left two children behind in Russia — Josef and Yekaterina — from previous marriages. Both were upset by her departure, and she was never close to either again. Raised by a nanny with whom she grew close after her mother's death in 1932, Alliluyeva was Stalin's only daughter. She had two brothers, Vasili and Jacob. Jacob was captured by the Nazis in 1941 and died in a concentration camp. Vasili died an alcoholic at age 40. Alliluyeva graduated from Moscow University in 1949, worked as a teacher and translator and traveled in Moscow's literary circles before leaving the Soviet Union. She was married four times — the last time to William Wesley Peters, after she came to the U.S., and she took the name Lana Peters. The
couple had a daughter, Olga, before divorcing in 1973. Alliluyeva wrote three more books, including "Only One Year," an autobiography published in 1969. Her father's legacy appeared to haunt her throughout her life. She denounced his policies, which included sending millions into labor camps, but often said other Communist Party leaders shared the blame. "Over me my father's shadow hovers, no matter what I do or say," she lamented in a 1983 interview with the Chicago Tribune. After living in Britain for two years, Alliluyeva returned to the Soviet Union with Olga in 1984 at age 58, saying she wanted to be reunited with her children. Her Soviet citizenship was restored, and she denounced her time in the U.S. and Britain, saying she never really had freedom. But more than a year later, she asked for and was given permission to leave after feuding with relatives. She returned to the U.S. and vowed never to go back to Russia. She went into seclusion in the last decades of her life. Her survivors include her daughter Olga, who now goes by Chrese Evans and lives in Portland, Ore. A son, Josef, died in 2008 at age 63 in Moscow, according to media reports in Russia. Yekaterina (born in 1950), who goes by Katya, is a scientist who studies an active volcano in eastern Siberia. Her father died in 1953.
Quotes Compiled by Nate Davis
“Say WHAT?” “As your nominee I will challenge [Obama] to seven Lincoln/Douglas style debates… I’ve already said, if he wants to use a teleprompter, that would be fine with me.” - Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich “A woman in Southern California pepper sprayed her fellow customers on Black Friday at Wal-Mart so she could get an advantage while shopping. But the good news is, today she was offered a job with the U.C. Davis police department.” - Jay Leno “It’s Cyber Monday, when everyone shops online. As soon as I woke up I pepper sprayed myself.” - Conan O’Brien “He’s a lifelong politician. “ - Mitt Romney talking about Newt Gingrich “Well, the inside talk is that Sarah Palin is going to endorse Newt Gingrich. If you think Newt is happy you should see Mitt Romney.” - Jay Leno “It looks like the president is campaigning on the taxpayer dime more than any other president has done.” -ABC News’ Jake Tapper to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney regarding President Obama’s frequent travel to swing states “I would say on a given week about 5 percent of his time.” - Jay Carney responding to reporters’ inquiries regarding how much time Obama spends on his reelection campaign
“Those who are going to be over 21 on November 12th, I ask for your support” - Presidential hopeful Rick Perry urging college students to vote for him on election day (which is actually on November 6, 2012 and in which anybody 18 and over can vote) “I’d say it’s 55 percent chance that he doesn’t get reelected.” - Carl Rove on Obama’s reelection chances “Facebook announced that they are developing a phone. In a related story, MySpace announced that they are developing a fax machine.” - Conan O’Brien
“ABO, ‘Anybody But Obama’ at this point in time.” - Michael Reagan when asked who his father, Ronald Reagan would be supporting in the Republican primary “I don’t think it’s healthy how the holiday sales start on Thanksgiving night. You shouldn’t spend Thanksgiving night in stores fighting with strangers. You should be at home, fighting with your family.” - Craig Ferguson “Over the weekend, President Obama took his daughters to a bookstore. Barack bought Malia ‘The Phantom Tollbooth,’ while Malia bought Barack ‘Economics for Dummies.’” - Jimmy Fallon
“Imagine a political movement created in a moment of terrible anxiety, its origins shrouded in a peculiar combination of manipulation and grass-roots mobilization, its ranks dominated by Christian conservatives and self-proclaimed patriots, its agenda driven by its members’ fervent embrace of nationalism, nativism and moral regeneration, with more than a whiff of racism wafting through it. No, not that movement. The one from the 1920s, with the sheets and the flaming crosses and the ludicrous name meant to evoke a heroic past. The Invisible Empire of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, they called it. And for a few years it burned across the nation, a fearsome thing to behold.” - Kevin Boyle comparing the Tea Party to the Ku Klux Klan while evaluating two new books on the Klan “I was angry this weekend, listening to the spin coming out of the administration, about the failure of the supercommittee, and that the president knew it was doomed for failure, so he didn’t get involved. Well then… are we paying you for? It’s doomed for failure so I’m not getting involved? Well, what have you been doing exactly?” – Gov. Christie ripping into President Obama “I don’t see how the party that says it’s the party of the family [Republicans] is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter of a century. And I’m prepared to take the heat for saying, ‘Let’s be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so that they are not separated from their families.’” - Newt Gingrich at Republican debate, arguing against those that advocate deporting all illegal immigrants, regardless of circumstance

CELEBRATING A SHARED PIONEERING SPIRIT: Jewish Federation of Broward County Commemorates Pioneer Families One hundred years ago, early settlers found their way to the banks of the New River to establish homesteads, trading posts and the foundations for what would become the city of Fort Lauderdale. In time, they were joined by Jewish pioneers who sought to make the lush landscape their permanent homes. As Fort Lauderdale celebrates its 100th Anniversary, the Jewish Federation of Broward County also commemorated the early pioneers who were among Fort Lauderdale’s first Jewish families who settled here 50 years ago or more. “We got in touch with children and grandchildren of families that called Fort Lauderdale home back when the entire population of Broward County was very small, and the subset of Jews even smaller,” said Kathy Rosen, Vice President, Cam-
Early Jewish settlers were farmers. What’s more, they lacked a synagogue in Fort Lauderdale until 1937, when Temple Emanuel was founded. It’s an important message for today’s Jews, Zerivitz said. “Jews need to know about the Jews that contributed to their community and made Fort Lauderdale a great place to live,” she said.

Stanley and Pearl Goodman were among the pioneers. The New York couple arrived in South Florida in 1961. Pearl stopped by Temple Emanuel on Andrews Avenue, met secretary Bea Mallinger, and soon knew Fort Lauderdale would be home to both the family and Stanley’s cardiology practice. They raised three children and have watched the Fort Lauderdale Jewish community blossom in kind. “We made a very nice Jewish community here,” Pearl Goodman said. “That’s the history here and we were part of it.”

Letter from Israeli Soldier
A Letter from an Israeli Reserve Soldier Our young country, built from the ashes of the Holocaust, does not turn its back on humanity. By Aron Adler My name is Aron Adler. I am 25 years old, was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Efrat, Israel. Though very busy, I don't view my life as unusual. Most of the time, I am just another Israeli citizen. During the day I work as a paramedic in Magen David Adom, Israel's national EMS service. At night, I'm in my first year of law school. I got married this October and am starting a new chapter of life together with my wonderful wife Shulamit. A few weeks out of every year, I'm called up to the Israeli army to do my reserve duty. I serve as a paramedic in an IDF paratrooper unit. My squad is made up of others like me; people living normal lives who step up to serve when responsibility calls. The oldest in my squad is 58, a father of four girls and grandfather of two; there are two bankers, one engineer, a
border infiltration, etc.— this year we were confronted by a new challenge. Several years ago, a trend started of African refugees crossing the Egyptian border from Sinai into Israel to seek asylum from the atrocities in Darfur. What started out as a small number of men, women and children fleeing from the machetes of the Janjaweed and violent fundamentalists to seek a better life elsewhere, turned into an organized industry of human trafficking. In return for huge sums of money, sometimes entire life savings paid to Bedouin "guides," these refugees are promised to be transported from Sudan, Eritrea and other African countries through Egypt and the Sinai desert, into the safe haven of Israel. We increasingly hear horror stories of the atrocities these refugees suffer on their way to freedom. They are subject to, and victims of, extortion, rape, murder and even organ theft, their bodies left to rot in the desert. Then, if lucky, after surviving this gruesome
This year, our reserve unit was stationed on the border between Israel, Egypt and the Gaza Strip in an area called "Kerem Shalom." Above and beyond the "typical" things for which we train – war, terrorism,
The region where it all happens is highly sensitive and risky from a security point of view, an area stricken with terror at every turn. It's just a few miles south of the place where Gilad Shalit was kidnapped. And yet the Israeli soldiers who are confronted with these refugees do it not with rifles aimed at them, but with a helping hand and an open heart. The refugees are taken to a nearby IDF base, given clean clothes, a hot drink, food and medical attention. They are finally safe. Even though I live in Israel and am aware through media reports of the events that take place on the Egyptian border, I never understood the intensity and complexity of the scenario until I experienced it myself. In the course of the past few nights, I have witnessed much. At 9 p.m. last night, the first reports came in of gunfire heard from the Egyptian border. Minutes later, IDF scouts spotted small groups of people trying to get across the fence. In the period of about one hour, we picked up 13 men—cold, barefoot, dehydrated— some wearing nothing except underpants. Their bodies were covered with lacerations and other wounds. We gathered them in a room, gave them blankets, tea

PPRESENTS RESENTS SPEAKERS RENOWNED RENOWNED SPEAKERS During the 350 days a year when I am not on active duty, when I am just another man trying to get by, the people tasked with doing this amazing job, this amazing deed, the people witnessing these events, are mostly young Israeli soldiers just out of high school, serving their compulsory time in the IDF, some only 18 years old. The refugees flooding into Israel are a heavy burden on our small country. More than 100,000 refugees have fled this way, and hundreds more cross the border every month. The social, economic and humanitarian issues created by this influx of refugees are immense. There are serious security consequences for Israel as well. This influx of African refugees poses a crisis for Israel. Israel has yet to come up with the solutions required to deal with this crisis effectively, balancing its' sensitive social, economic and security issues, at the same time striving to care for the refugees. I don't have the answers to these complex problems which desperately need to be resolved. I'm not writing these words with the intention of taking a political position or a tactical stand on the issue. I am writing to tell you and the entire world what's really happening down here on the Egyptian/Israeli border. And to tell you that despite all the serious problems created by this national crisis, these refugees have no reason to fear us. Because they know, as the entire world needs to know, that Israel has not shut its eyes to their suffering and pain. Israel has not looked the other way. The State of Israel has put politics aside to take the ethical and humane path as it has so often done before, in every instance of human suffering and natural disasters around the globe. We Jews know only too well about suffering and pain. The Jewish people have been there. We have been the refugees and the persecuted so many times, over thousands of years, all over the world. Today, when African refugees flood our borders in search of freedom and better lives, and some for fear of their lives, it is particularly noteworthy how Israel deals with them, despite the enormous strain it puts on our country on so many levels. Our young and thriving Jewish people and country, built from the ashes of the Holocaust, do not turn their backs on humanity. Though I already knew that, this week I once again experienced it firsthand. I am overwhelmed with emotion and immensely proud to be a member of this nation. With love of Israel, Aron Adler, writing from the Israel/Gaza/Egyptian border Reprinted with permission from Aish.com.

Flourishing Jerusalem Architecture During the British Mandate Period By Gedaliah Borvick of “My Israel Home”
the homes, including Renaissance, Moorish and Arab motifs and Armenian ceramic decorations.
Distinctive Buildings of the Era
I recently decided to devote three articles to the history of architectural activity in Israel’s capital. The first article discussed architecture at the end of the Ottoman Empire. Today, we will focus on the British Mandate period. From December 1917 until 1948, the British ruled over Palestine and created strict zoning laws regulating Jerusalem construction. One British municipal ordinance that is still in effect today and has greatly influenced the character of Jerusalem architecture is the requirement that all new buildings have stone exteriors. Let’s discuss the architecture in three neighborhoods built during the British Mandate and focus on three unique buildings from that era.
Rechavia Established in 1922, Rechavia received its name from Judge Gad Frumkin, a resident who explained that "G-d will expand our borders" (rachav in Hebrew means wide). Richard Kaufmann, a Jewish architect from Germany, modeled the prestigious community after the garden cities of Europe, offering each family its own individual house and garden. There was a strong emphasis on International Style, which was the forerunner of Modernist architecture. One example of International Style was Bauhaus-inspired architecture, based on functionality, clean lines and no unnecessary decorations.
The Palace Hotel Located near the Old City at the bottom of Agron Street, the Palace Hotel was developed in 1929 at the urging of the Supreme Muslim Council to showcase Arab culture. The hotel was one of the most luxurious buildings in Jerusalem, and it displayed a mix of Greco-Roman, Renaissance, Gothic, Romanesque, neo-Moorish and Mamluk elements. Spiraling upkeep costs caused the Palace Hotel to close; it then served as British administrative and military offices and, after 1948, housed Israel’s Ministry of Industry and Trade for many years. After falling into disrepair, the property was purchased by the Reichmann family and is now being rebuilt as a five-star Waldorf Astoria hotel and condominiums, retaining much of its original architectural refinements.
The King David Hotel
Beit Hakerem Literally "House of the Vineyard" (derived from Jeremiah 6:1), Beit Hakerem was another Richard Kaufmann-designed garden suburb of Jerusalem. The price of a plot in Beit Hakerem was about one tenth of Rechavia; accordingly, it attracted many writers, teachers and other white-collar workers. Established in 1924, Beit Hakerem’s predominant housing style was similar to Rechavia, with a strong emphasis on functionality and unadorned facades.
Talbieh Established in 1924, Talbieh, and neighboring Katamon, Abu Tor and Baka, were affluent neighborhoods initially inhabited mostly by Christian Arabs. The houses boasted large lush gardens. Eclectic architectural elements graced
The King David Hotel was opened in 1931. Swiss interior decorator Hofschmidt was charged with the mandate of creating an atmosphere suggestive of the time of King David, with a high-ceilinged, marblefloored lobby, and Egyptian, Assyrian, Hittite, Phoenician and Greek motifs in public areas. Toward the end of the British mandate, the hotel’s southern wing served as the British administrative and military center. In July 1946, a bomb was placed there by a member of the Etzel (Irgun Tzva’i Le’umi) movement. The Etzel’s phone call warning the British to evacuate the building went unheeded, and 91 people were killed when the entire southern wing was destroyed. After Jerusalem was reunited in 1967, the hotel was renovated and expanded.
The YMCA Building What do Manhattan’s Empire State Building and the YMCA building in Jerusalem have in common? Each was the tallest structure in its city at the time of completion, and both were designed by architect Arthur Louis Harmon. Completed in 1933, the YMCA building is a combination of Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic and neoMoorish architecture. Its goal was to evoke early architectural traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and to serve as a symbol of peace. The foundation contains stones from quarries believed to have been used in the construction of the Second Temple; the Christian element is the Romanesque and Gothic styles, exemplified by the vaulted ceilings in the main lounge; and a large dome and painted decorations in the entrance hall are Islamic characteristics.

Broadway-Bound SOUL DOCTOR, The Journey of ‘Rock-Star Rabbi’ Shlomo Carlebach, Opens December 24 in South Florida
Nobody likes paying taxes. But what adds insult to injury for so many of us is
SOUL DOCTOR, the exhilarating, riveting and hilarious new Broadway-bound musical, tells the true story of the beloved and controversial father of popular Jewish music, Shlomo Carlebach. Deemed a “CERTIFIABLE HIT” by Larry King and examiner.com, the pre-Broadway premier debuts in South Florida on December 24, with shows first in Miami Beach, then Fort Lauderdale.
just how maddeningly complicated it all gets. If you're like most Americans, you've seen your own return grow longer and more complicated over the years. Maybe you've noticed the new Schedule M for the Making Work Pay Credit. Maybe you've bought a rental property and filed separate depreciation schedules for regular tax, state tax, and Alternative Minimum Tax. President Obama's 2010 tax return ran to 59 pages. And it's not unusual for complicated individual returns to run over 100 pages including forms, schedules, worksheets, and statements. Of course, that's not really surprising, given the source of all the confusion. The U.S. Government Printing Office's own version of the Internal Revenue Code—available for the bargain price of just $179—runs 3,387 pages. Add the IRS's regulations, for $974 more (shipping generously included!), and you're up to 16,845 pages. Sounds ugly, right? It is. (Trust us, we actually have to read this stuff.) But if you need any reason to be thankful this holiday season, be glad you're not responsible for filing the country's largest tax return. General Electric is America's sixth-biggest corporation and its biggest conglomerate. Originally founded by Thomas Edison in 1890, GE manufactures everything from light bulbs and refrigerators to jet engines, locomotives, and nuclear reactors. Their NBC subsidiary reaches millions of viewers daily. And their GE Capital unit, which accounts for over half of their profit, is bigger than all but six standalone banks. It shouldn't surprise you, then, that GE files a pretty hefty tax return. Their tax department, which the New York Times reports "is often referred to as the world's best tax law firm," employs 975 people. They file literally thousands of tax returns every year, for every country in the world (or at least every one that requires a tax return), every state in this country, and more cities than you can name. But nobody really cares what GE's Vermont return looks like, right? What about their flagship U.S. federal income tax? Well, 2006 was the first year the IRS required corporations with assets over $50 million to file electronically. That year, GE spent over $500,000 just to develop their own e-filing system! Their
Shlomo Carlebach Steve Margoshes, the legendary composer/orchestrator of such Broadway hits as Elton John’s Aida, The WHO’s Tommy and Smokey Joe’s Café, has woven together 30 of Carlebach’s timeless hit songs into a show that CNN’s Larry King described as “A transformative theatrical experience, with soul-stirring melodies and a story that keeps the crowd roaring with laughter and song all night long!” SOUL DOCTOR takes us on a musical odyssey through the challenges and triumphs of this cultural phenomenon: his childhood escape from Nazi Germany, becoming a rabbinical prodigy in America; discovering Gospel and Soul music during his unlikely friendship with Nina Simone; his meteoric rise as a “Rock Star-Rabbi” in the 1960s, performing with Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead; his struggle to reconcile his deep traditional roots with his desire to reach people of all backgrounds in the “free-love generation;” and his personal conflicts trying to keep his family together while traversing the globe as a “Soul Doctor,” bringing joy and song to the lonely, the searching and the brokenhearted. “Shlomo himself was like a great theatrical experience,” said Daniel S. Wise, SOUL DOCTOR’s playwright/producer. “Even if you were in a large crowd, Shlomo’s magnetism and charisma would reach you in the most personal and intimate way, igniting your imagination to discover a new level of joy.” Six-time Tony Award winning Broadway Producer Richard Frankel says, “We produced Hairspray, which became an international mega hit because it had a ‘Life-is-a-joyful-adventure’ quality to it. And I feel the same quality in SOUL DOCTOR, which thrills me and makes me really happy to be associated with it.” Steve Margoshes has incorporated Carlebach’s original hits into a spectacular theatrical score. “His incredibly rich, gorgeous melodies are among the most theatrical of all the music I’ve worked on,” he says. “Broadway audiences are going to be taken in and carried away by this incredible and deeply moving story that is joyous and filled with laughter - like the great musical comedies.”
first electronic return took a full 30 minutes to transmit—but replaced what would have been 24,000 pages of paper. (That's 24,000 pages the IRS would have had to convert into electronic form anyway.) Since then, GE's return has grown even fatter. For 2010, the firm reported worldwide profits of $14.2 billion. (That's more than the entire economies of Iceland and Jamaica.) They paid $2.7 billion in worldwide tax, but actually claimed a $3.2 billion refund from the U.S. Treasury—most of it due to losses at the GE Capital unit resulting from the 2008 financial collapse. Their actual tax return swelled to 57,000 pages. Print them all out and you'll have a stack of paper 19 feet high!
SOUL DOCTOR has produced rave reviews www.shlomomusical.com/press.php “See it before it goes to Broadway,” wrote Playbill. “Powerful and touching! A charismatic, enlightening evening that rouses the soul ... A must see!” wrote Bradley J. Troll of the New Orleans Times Picayune. Broadway World calls it “The first major Jewish-themed musical since Fiddler on the Roof.” “This show is already a hit and destined to become a hit on Broadway for many years to come!” raved Larry King. “SOUL DOCTOR” Tickets Available Now (www.shlomomusical.com) runs December 24 - January 8 at the Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. It continues January 10 - 29 at Fort Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse, 707 NE 8th Street. FOCAL POWER Rabbi Warren Kasztl
Thus far, we have covered three steps taken by Elisha the Prophet that prompted G-d to resuscitate the deceased son of the Shunamite woman. We are now ready to explore the fourth: Elisha’s eyes gazed intensely into the eyes of the child. Eyes have been described as our windows to the world and the windows to one’s soul. Everyone sees the world and themselves in a manner that is as unique to them as their retinal scan and fingerprints. What impact can one’s special “vision” have on the workplace? It all depends on the eyes they are gazing through. We’ve all heard the famous cliché that the glass can be half full or half empty. Irrespective of one’s role in the office, how they view their job, their colleagues, their supervisors and the overall goals of the company is a function of one’s vision. Do you see your colleagues for their faults, or positively for all that they are and who they can be? Are your suggestions visualized and expressed in a manner that reflects the negative or how can we make this right? All of this ultimately qualifies our eyes as the window to our souls. If we see the world from a negative perspective, fixing the problems will seem so overwhelming, causing us to give up before we begin. Whatever attention is given to the solutions will be presented in a manner that lacks the confidence – the vision – to succeed. The problem with the glass being half empty is that it is viewed as a vacuum. It starts out as space that one chooses not to fill and eventually becomes space viewed as incapable of being filled. This vision, contagious and contaminating, can paralyze one’s colleagues S and support staff.

ened optimism. In determining why a project should succeed, you are aware of the potenT tial pitfalls, not because you’re pessimistic but because success is envisioned through eyes of reality, not blind fantasy. Positive vision breeds positive energy, creativity, and open communication, key ingredients in effective teamwork. It behooves you to view this video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc)! It teaches that money is not near as motivating a factor in our work as is “sipuch ha’nefesh” – the life meaningfulness that one experiences in the work they do. At times this is a solitary achievement but in the majority of cases, a multi-dimensional team effort. The ability for us and the team to “see” where we are headed in a positive, proacA tive manner precipitates an energy that takes on a life of its own, driving the process forward with confidence and efficiency. Upon completion, the satisfaction gained by being part of a successful venture may very well be more significant than the paycheck.
much about the eyes through which we see the world. Regarding others, having well-grounded and realistic expectations will result in fewer disappointments. In every work environment there is a knowledge base and skills we have a right to count on from our colleagues. Overall accurate skill assessment and effective communication will ensure that the business machine works at peak efficiency. If someone falls short, the source of faulty vision has to be determined and addressed in a fair, issue oriented (not personal) manner. If you fail in a given task, the best way to defuse the conflict is to take responsibility. By admitting that it’s your fault, you can move onto what was learned within the process and how to avoid the mishap in the future. That’s time and energy far better spent than going back and forth, dodging blame, when the burden of responsibility is on your shoulders.

AHRON WEINER
World Class Jewish Artist Local Resident…World Class Artist Sitting in Ahron Weiner’s art studio, you’d think you are in a DUMBO loft, a New Orleans brownstone or perhaps an apartment in Montmartre, France. The convergence of colors and objects– some more abstract than others–each tell a different story. Yet, this studio is located in the heart of the Five Towns, New York. Ahron is a world-class artist, and a local through and through. Born and raised in the Five Towns, Ahron now resides here with his wife, Pamela, and their three sons. The sheer amount of art in Ahron’s studio would seem to indicate he’s a dedicated artist working at his craft every waking moment. Yet, like many talented individuals in our community, the cost of living requires us to spend more time on our livelihood and less time on our passions. For the past 18 years, Ahron has worked as a Madison Avenue advertising executive and creates art when his workday is done. “There’s a reason I sleep approximately five hours a night,” says Ahron, explaining what it takes to balance artistic passion with time for family and the demands of running an advertising agency. Over the years, Ahron’s professional career and artistic talents have converged, leading to remarkable results. His studio is filled with collages created out of deconstructed advertising posters that retain the richness of advertising culture, but have a unique visual effect due to their layered assemblage.
Ahron refers to his process for creating this art as “Semiotic Archeology; deconstructing layers of images, words and graphics to create newjuxtapositions and meanings.” During the 2010 DUMBO Arts Festival, Ahron’s Cycles of Violence– which tells the story of 9/11 in ten decollaged images— hung on a 140’ long scaffold opposite the base of the Manhattan Bridge. Ahron’s life as an advertising executive and passionate artist has converged in other ways as well. His favorite childhood book was Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. As an innately artistic child, it was not only the story that spoke to Ahron but also the imagery and symbolism in the book. Years later, Ahron’s advertising agency worked with Sendak on an advertising campaign for Bell Atlantic. This led to a personal friendship and Sendak commissioning Ahron to shoot photographs of the Czech countryside and Terezin concentration camp, which Sendak used as a reference for illustrations in his children’s book titled Brundibar. In 2001, Ahron was transferred to Prague to run the advertising account of a Czech telecommunications company. Living in Prague with his family for three years enabled Ahron to see things differently, and become interested in capturing the world around him. “I started seeing myself as a photographer while living in Prague,” says Ahron. Middle East Politics under Mubarak. The forpresident was mer ousted from his rule after protests this year and is on trial for the deaths of protestors and on corruption charges. Israeli political officials criticized the White House’s demand that the Egyptian army transfer its authority to a civil government as soon as possible.
Egyptian Elections: A Bolstered Democracy or a Change for the Worse? By Avraham Zuroff At press time, the Freedom and Justice Party, which includes mostly Moslem Brotherhood members, is expected to win the vast majority of seats in Egypt’s first parliamentary elections since the ousting of Hosni Mubarak. Will Egypt lose its secular identity, becoming a theocratic Islamic country
“The U.S. is repeating its mistake from the first days of the revolution. Back then, they told Mubarak to step down,” a senior official told Maariv. “An accelerated transition and free elections held too early is bound to cause a rise in power of the Moslem Brotherhood.” Ahead of Monday’s parliamentary elections, Tantawi told the Egyptian people, “We only have two options: for the elections to succeed and for Egypt to attain security, or there will be grave consequences awaiting Egypt.” Tantawi also stiffened the protestors’ demands that he transfer the military’s rule to the National
The protests took on an ugly anti-Semitic tone last Friday when thousands of supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood gathered in a Cairo mosque, promising to “one day kill all the Jews” and wage war against Jerusalem’s “Judaization.” That day was also the anniversary of the U.N.’s approval of the Partition Plan that enabled the formation of a Jewish state. Time will tell whether the Moslem Brotherhood’s ascent to power in Egypt will negatively impact its 32-year peace treaty with Israel. Arab Spring Far from Western Democracy What triggered the protests in the streets of Tunis, Cairo and Tripoli? Journalists from the west point out that the citizens in the Arab world are disgusted by government corruption, poverty and the various regimes’ suppression of freedom. In short, the angry mobs want democracy. Or do they? Prof. Raphael Israeli says that the citizens indoctrinated in the Arab world have no concept of what democracy is. The Professor emeritus of Islamic, Middle Eastern and Chinese history at Hebrew University in Jerusalem says that the calls for democracy on the streets of Cairo aren’t the western connotation of democracy. Last year, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s National Democratic Party won 420 out of 508 seats in his country’s lower house parliamentary elections. In the 2005 parliamentary elections, the officially banned Muslim Brotherhood gained 88 seats as Independents. Yet in the last December’s
“As far as the final goal is concerned, there are no policy differences between al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood. The two organizations have the same objective: to place the entire world under an Islamic caliphate.” like Iran? Will Egypt under the Moslem Brotherhood honor its peace agreement with Israel? South Florida Jewish Home’s Middle East correspondent, Avraham Zuroff, analyzes what’s at stake. As the first stage of Egyptian elections is underway, violent clashes continue in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. The 17.5 million eligible voters went to the election polls on Monday and Tuesday, the first time since the ousting of Hosni Mubarak in February. Israel’s Foreign Ministry sent a message to major European capitals and Washington to protect the interim reign of Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Egypt’s acting president, and prevent actions that could undermine his authority or the military under his control. In the meantime, demonstrators demand that the military leadership immediately step down for a civilian power. The protestors feel that the military leadership under Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi is merely perpetuating the 30-year dictatorship
Salvation Government, an interim coalition led by Mohammed El Bareidi, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency. “The position of the armed forces will remain as it is. It will not change in any new constitution,” Field Marshal Tantawi stated, without elaboration. Since last Thursday, the military has made what can be interpreted as concessions by appointing Kamal al-Ganzouri as Egypt’s new prime minister. The military also apologized for the death of protestors. But these concessions have fallen flat to the protestors in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

An Islamic regime, such as Iran, derives its justification for power from the supremacy of Sharia, or Muslim religious law. The ruler has divine legitimacy. “Sovereignty belongs to Allah alone, and since the laws of the Koran are absolute, mortals cannot amend them in any way. Thus, only the ruler can claim to govern legitimately,” Prof. Israeli says. “The problem in the Arab countries isn’t one of unemployment or discontent,” Prof. Israeli states. “The basic problem is legitimacy of rule. Every
hood to be one of the oldest and most influential Islamic movements in the world. Its aim is to abolish colonial rule and assert sharia, the Koran’s teachings in modern life. Its emphasis on social justice gained many followers. In 1938, the movement was said to have around 200,000 members; in 1948, the movement grew to a half a million supporters. By the early 1940s, the Brotherhood had established branches in several Arab countries, including Lebanon and Syria, and its headquarters in Cairo became the central node and meeting point. The Moslem Brotherhood was first banned in Egypt in 1948 after a member of the Moslem Brotherhood assassinated the Egyptian prime minister, Mahmoud Fahmi anNukrashi Pasha. AlBanna was subsequently assassinated in what is thought to be a cycle of retaliation. In 1952, the Moslem Brotherhood was accused of igniting a Cairo fire which destroyed about 750 buildings that were frequented by British and other foreigners. The Brotherhood subsequently overthrew
Prime Minister, Gamal Abdel Nasser, who ascended to power on a secular nationalistic platform. As a result of the assassination attempt, members of the Brotherhood were blamed and imprisoned and sometimes tortured. Nasser then banned the Brotherhood. The Egyptian Brotherhood has disavowed violence since the 1970s and has sought to participate in Egyptian politics. Though the Brotherhood was officially banned, it was able to enjoy some political clout by working with other political parties. The 2011 Revolution enabled the Egyptian Brotherhood to take a prominent role in the current elections. “Jihad is our path; martyrdom is our aspiration” The Muslim Brotherhood believes in jihad, which has been translated by Islamic scholars as striving in the way of Allah. But non-Moslems often explain the term as an armed struggle against non-believers. Lt. Col. (res.) Jonathan D. Halevi, a senior researcher of the Middle East and radical Islam at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, wrote in a November 2007 paper that the Moslem Brotherhood and al-Qaeda differ regarding tactics but share a common strategy. “Al-Qaeda favors an implacable jihad to destroy the economies of the Western countries. The Moslem Brotherhood supports terrorism and jihad against foreign presence in the Islamic world, but its top priority is constructing a Moslem infrastructure in the West which will

Prof. Israeli says that Arab leaders confuse their citizens with what is and what isn’t democratic. Although opposition parties are severely restricted, Mubarak was elected “democratically.” Yet Mubarak had accused Israel of being a dictatorship ruled by former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. And Basher al-Assad ran unopposed for his second term in Syria’s “democratic” 2007 elections.

slowly but surely enable it to rule during the 21st century,” Halevi states, “As far as the final goal is concerned, there are no policy differences between al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood. The two organizations have the same objective: to place the entire world under an Islamic caliphate.” Indeed, Abdullah Azzam, the teacher and mentor of Osama bin Laden, was a member of the Jordanian Moslem Brotherhood. In 1998, Ayman alZawahiri merged the Moslem Brotherhood into al-Qaeda. After Osama Bin Laden’s elimination, Ayman al-Zawahiri became al Qaeda’s leader. Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, the mastermind of the September 11th attack, joined the Moslem Brotherhood in Kuwait in his youth. Halevi mentions that even in recent years, the Moslem Brotherhood’s publication in London, Risalat alIkhwan, maintained its jihadist orientation; it featured at the top of its cover page in 2001 the slogan, “Our mission: world domination” (siyadat al-dunya). This header was changed after 9/11, but the publication still carried the Moslem Brotherhood’s motto which includes: “jihad is our path; martyrdom is our aspiration.”
sociate at the Institute for National Security Studies, stated in an op-ed in Monday’s Yediot Ahronot: “Even if the worst-case scenario occurs in Egypt – the Muslim Brotherhood takes power – it is clear that this regime will want to avoid a military confrontation with Israel for four reasons: One, the political reality in Egypt will require any regime to concentrate – first of all – on the internal situation. It is reasonable to assume that such a regime will make many anti-Israeli statements but it is unreasonable to assume that it will try to translate these statements into action. Second, the main challenge for an Egyptian regime will be economic…Third, Egypt is dependent – both economically and militarily – on American aid. Conflict with Israel would end this vital assistance. And fourth, given that Israel has withdrawn ‘from the
Repercussions for Israel The Moslem Brotherhood promises jobs and social welfare, making it a popular movement in Egypt. To understand what Egypt could become if the Moslem Brotherhood is elected, one could look at Gaza, ruled by the Hamas terrorist organization, an offshoot of the Moslem Brotherhood. Would an Egypt ruled by the Moslem Brotherhood abide by its peace agreement with Israel? Prof. Israeli notes two scenarios that could play out. “The first thing that they’ll do is to cancel the peace treaty,” he said. “Based on the experience with Hamas, they’ll continue to bomb and fight a war with Israel to the finish.” But Prof. Israeli says it’s likely that the Muslim Brotherhood will refrain from attacking Israel – since Egypt wouldn’t gain militarily. The Islamic doctrine of hudna, or ceasefire, states that treaties can be disregarded to overwhelm the enemy. And battles against “infidels” – in this case, Israel – need not be fought as long as losing such a battle would “desecrate the name of Allah.” If Egyptian troops were to enter the Sinai, Israel would retaliate by sending troops into Sinai, so nothing militarily would be gained, Prof. Israeli explains. Maj. Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland, a senior research as-
last grain of sand’ on Egyptian soil, it has no real reason for conflict. There is a limit to what any future Egyptian regime will be willing to sacrifice in order to help the Palestinians or Hezbollah.” Marwan Bishara, a senior political analyst in alJazeera wrote, “The question for Egypt is not who replaces Mubarak – rather what replaces the Mubarak regime.” Egypt’s Political Parties: From Secular to Sharia •The once banned Moslem Brotherhood established the Freedom and Justice Party and provided its leaders. The party wants to change Egyptian’s secular democracy to conform to Islamic Sharia law. According to its English-language website, the Moslem Brotherhood states that the Western concept of “secular liberal democracy” is undemocratic because it rejects religion in public life. Mohamed Morsi’s Freedom
and Justice Party is the leading party of the Democratic Alliance. Essam El-Aryan, the Freedom and Justice party vice chairman, expects the Democratic Alliance to get 40-50 percent of seats. ElAryan told the BBC that 40 percent of its constituents are from the Moslem Brotherhood. •The Al-Wafd party also wants Islamic Sharia as the main source of legislation. But al-Wafd wants a civil state where freedom of religion is guaranteed. Initially part of the Democratic Alliance, the party withdrew to run under its own platform. AlSayyid al-Badawi, a wealthy businessman, heads the party. He expressed fears that the Islamists might win a majority in the election and play a critical role in drafting the new constitution. Some experts predict that the party will win 10 percent of the seats in the parliament, the BBC reports. •The Free Egyptian Party calls for freedom and democracy, a free market economy and wants to establish a civil state, a position opposed by Islamists. •The Egyptian Social Democratic Party, headed by Mohammed Abou Al-Ghar, emphasizes a free market economy and social justice. The party aims for a constitution that guarantees a civil state based on citizenship. Emmad Gad, a member of the party’s executive bureau, predicts that the party will get 4050 seats. •Al-Nour is a party comprised of followers of Salafi Islam, a movement that believes in the literal meaning of Islamic texts. The party’s goal is to apply Islamic Sharia law in all aspects of life. The party was initially part of the Democratic Alliance but withdrew to form its own bloc, as its views toward Sharia law and animosity toward Israel are greater than the Freedom and Justice party’s platform. Al-Nour refuses to use the term ‘civil state’ in the Egyptian constitutional draft because its leadership is opposed to a secular state. The party leadership doesn’t expect to get more than a few seats. •Al-Tagmmu is a leftist party that favors the state to play a major role in controlling the economy. The party is part of the Egyptian bloc, which is joined by the Free Egyptians party and the Egyptian Social Democratic party, in affirming the concept of a civil state based on citizenship and equality. Al-Tagmmu was initially part of the Democratic Alliance led by the Freedom and Justice party. But it withdrew from the alliance when the Freedom and Justice party raised religious slogans during demonstrations, which is against al-Tagmmu’s vision of a civil state. A party representative said that al-Tagmmu expects 20 seats in the elections, which is more than the party has won in the past.

Financial news coined, arbitrary, fanciful or suggestive marks — not descriptive or generic ones.
By Michael B. Chesal* Too often, businesses neglect the importance of selecting and protecting “strong” names to identify their products and services. Not only can this oversight result in consumer confusion and lost business, but a valuable asset might be lost as well. The objective of this article is to give the reader a basic understanding of what makes a name valuable or “strong” and how it can be protected.
Selecting a Strong Name The “strength” of a mark lies in the ability of its owner to prevent others from using the same or similar mark on their goods or services. Every trademark can be said to fall somewhere on a continuum that would look like this: Weak Strong <———————————————————————————————————> Generic - Descriptive - Suggestive - Coined/Arbitrary A “generic” mark is the name by which something is commonly known, such as “hamburger” or “video store.” It is the name of the good or service being sold. Because no one can claim exclusive rights in generic terms, they are unprotectable and are accordingly the weakest of marks and should be avoided in the name selection process. “Descriptive” marks convey an immediate impression about the ingredients, quality or character of goods or services, such as “Chap-Stick” or “Quick-Lube.” Terms such as these are usually accorded a very narrow scope of protection and are generally considered weak. Depending upon its distinctiveness, a descriptive mark may be strengthened through exclusive, extensive use. “Suggestive” marks are words or phrases which require thought, imagination and perception to reach a conclusion about the goods or services to which they apply. They are said to trigger a “mental-pause.” For example, the mark “Rent-A-Wreck” for rental car services is considered suggestive because of the incongruity or exaggeration conveyed by the mark. Suggestive marks, depending upon their uniqueness, may be very strong. “Arbitrary” marks are the ordinary words used in a fanciful or arbitrary way so that there is no association between the mark and the goods or services to which it applies. Examples of these types of marks are “APPLE” for computers, “SUNSHINE” for crackers, and “COCONUTS” for record store services. These types of marks are usually accorded a broad scope of protection, and are considered relatively strong. Finally, the strongest of marks are “coined” marks. These are marks which are made up terms and are otherwise meaningless except as applied to the goods or services to which they apply. Examples of this type of mark are “XEROX,” “KODAK” and “EXXON.” These types of marks are accorded the broadest scope of protection. As these explanations suggest, in order to maximize the value of what could be one of a company’s most important assets, businesses should adopt
In selecting a name, a trademark search for potentially conflicting marks should normally be conducted, especially if the mark has not yet been used. Such searches can be conducted using various resource materials available on the internet or in most libraries, but it is generally best to employ the services of a professional searching organization. A typical trademark search report and analysis costs approximately $1,000. Because of the potential for infringing on another’s rights, the name selection process should be made with the help of an attorney versed in trademark law.
Protecting Your Marks Once selected, a trademark which is used or intended to be used in commerce should be registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Registration is also available on the state level, but a state registration will usually not give the owner of a mark any substantially greater rights than afforded the federal registration. The two most important reasons for registering a mark are to establish the registrant’s ownership of the mark, and place the public on notice of the registrant’s rights. The owner of a registered mark is in a better position to protect and enforce its trademark rights than the owner of an unregistered mark. Finally, the importance of proper trademark usage cannot be over-stressed. The following are some common rules for trademark usage: Don’t use marks as descriptive terms Be consistent with the manner in which the mark is used Use the mark as an adjective, not a verb or noun. Plurals and possessives should also be avoided Distinguish the mark when it is used in text by using all capital letters, bold or italics Use a trademark symbol “TM” (or “SM” for service marks) in connection with the mark. (The ® can only be used in connection with federally registered marks.) Police the market and require others to cease and desist from using confusingly similar marks. The failure to follow these simple rules could result in the loss of trademark rights.
Conclusion Volumes have been written on the subject of selecting and protecting trademarks as the law in this area continues to develop. In this short article it is not possible to address the countless issues that arise and should be considered in the name selection process. But it is hopefully clear that just about every business has a potentially valuable asset lurking within it. Business owners owe it to themselves to recognize the importance of these issues and get the most for their investment. And if it is done properly, it just might turn a simple name or slogan into a gold mine.

MICHAEL DEZER The South Florida Jewish Home spotlights prominent Jewish leaders who have shaped the landscape of South Florida. With Michael Dezer's new automobile museum and significant development of Sunny Isles, he has certainly changed the landscape, and skyline, of South Florida. It is our pleasure to share him with you. Where are you from, where was your family from? I was born in Tel Aviv. My family originally came from Russia. When did you come to America? Where did you initially settle? In 1962, I moved to New York. I received two degrees BA and MBA. When did you first get involved in real estate? What did you do before that? What was your first project? In 1970, I opened my own business in direct marketing and that was what led me to real estate. I bought buildings to use them for my business. During the 70’s and 80’s, I turned out to be a pioneer and visionary in Chelsea, New York. We bought buildings that had lofts and we turned them into residential units and offices. When did you come to Florida? What was your first project in Florida? In the 90’s, I started purchasing hotels in Miami Beach. I covered Sunny Isles Beach by purchasing old buildings, demolishing them and building the highest condos on the ocean. What was your Jewish involvement as a child? I had a bar-mitzvah and I still remember the Bermuda suit that was purchased for me on that
special occasion. Although I received a secular education, my bar-mitzvah took place in the American Zionist house. Why the Dezer Collection and Museum? What interested you or motivated you to undertake such a project? When I was 16, I received my first Vesper. I took it for a couple of months to Europe to travel. When I came back and joined the Israeli army, I sold it and bought my first car which was a Plymouth ’49. It is interesting that when I came to America I bought a Plymouth ’53. What is your favorite piece or pieces in your collection? People ask me often what my favorite piece is. I find the art and the beauty in many of the cars that I own but, if I were pushed to choose, I would say that the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado, several of the James bond cars, but, beyond everything, I have a special place in my heart for my Vespers collection. How long has it taken you to accumulate such a collection and how much has it cost you? In 1980, I started to collect cars. Today, the value of my collection is close to $50 million. What is your Jewish involvement or activities today? The grounds include several large rooms to celebrate events, such as weddings, bar-mitzvahs and we have a convention center for galas and banquets. The Dezer collection is going to accommodate requests of glat kosher. In addition to all those functions, the facility will also host art galleries. I was looking for someone with particular skills, background and characteristics to assume the position of managing our many events and promoting the new venue in the general market, but especially in the Jewish community. Rivka Arad, who we call Rikki, came to us after many years of
work in the Jewish community. She was ordained as a rabbi. It was obvious she could run and promote a business and, when I saw her charisma and people-skills, I realized that executive vice president of the Dezer Collection was a position that was custom made for her. I can already see that Rikki Arad has a special interest to help fundraising organizations who wish to make a difference. She is constantly trying to accommodate various foundations and help them in order to enable them to put there celebrations in our elegant venue alongside the Dezer Collection. We will also have a synagogue on the property. The Jewish community will be invited to the dedication of Beit – Ramam, which will be a house of learning worship and gathering. Although I was not raised as a religiously observant boy, I do believe in the obligation to help Rikki and I have already discussed the way in which our new synagogue will help in the future children who are unable to afford the celebration of their own barmitzvah. I personally also choose to help organizations that concentrate on the elderly and my wife, Naomi, chooses to concentrate her charitable efforts on children. So, between the two of us, we hopefully cover both the old and young. I invite you to call rabbi Rivka (Rikki) Arad at 305 934 6070 with any request for events; celebrations from as small as 50 or as large as 1500 people. What is your goal, vision or aspirations for the Collection and South Florida? It is exciting for me to see that the Dezer Collection is going according to my vision. The Dezer Collection is going to be a place, not only for cars from every single country in the world, but there is a special exhibition for the cars of the stars, cars that played a role in famous movies, from action, such as Fast and Furious to Knight Rider, Bat Mobiles, Back to the Future, all the way back to cartoons, such as the Flintstones.

Forgotten Heroes
Avi Heiligman Usually a commander on the battlefield has been with his troops through training, preparing for battle and the actual fight itself. Sometimes a change is needed while the soldiers are in the trenches. The most famous cases of this are when General Ulysses S. Grant took control of the Union Army during the Civil War after five previous generals had failed to take the risks to win the war, and when Field Marshall Bernard Law Montgomery took control of the British 8th Army in North Africa to defeat Rommel’s Afrika Korps in WW2. In both cases, morale was sagging and the person who took over the position was well-experienced and beloved (Montgomery was loved by the British and loathed by the Americans) and therefore were able to get the best out of their armies and win the battle. A third example of this is Australian General John Monash during the First World War. John Monash didn’t come from your typical military family. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland. They spoke German (probably Yiddish) and that gave rise to critics of Monash who said that he was a German spy. The irony was that his parents’ old home in Poland was near where Ger-
man General Erich Ludendorff was born. As fate would have it, Monash and Ludendorff would soon be commanding armies on opposite sides during the Battle of Amiens. Monash was born in 1865 in Melbourne, and he attended the University of Melbourne with graduate degrees in civil engineering, law, and, in 1921, a doctorate in Engineering. While in college, he joined the militia and slowly rose in rank and he became a full colonel in 1913, commanding the 13th Infantry Brigade. The military was only a side job that he took on. He was mainly a civil engineer and was a partner in a contracting business that was dissolved in 1905. For a few years, he was deeply in debt but soon formed his own company and by 1912 he was a very rich and networked executive. World War I broke out in 1914 and because England was involved, Australia, a British colony, joined the war. Monash, who now joined the army as a regular officer, was given command of the 4th Infantry Brigade, which was stationed in Egypt fighting the Ottoman Imperial Army. During the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915, his brigade, fighting with New Zealanders, entrenched themselves in a valley that became known as Monash Valley. Even though they were decisively defeated, Monash made a name for himself as a great strategist, decision maker, organizational leader and a beloved commander. Later that year, he was promoted to brigadier general. Even though the army had to evacuate the area, under Monash they were able to do so with only minor loss to men and the vital equipment that was need to mount another offensive quickly. They also retreated without alerting the enemy, so when a few hours later, the Turks
opened up a furious bombardment and attacked empty trenches. He was soon recalled to England to take command of the newly formed 3rd Australian Division. He trained it from the start and led them through many battles in France. Even though the division suffered heavy casualties, his enthusiasm did not go unnoticed by the high command and he was promoted to lieutenant general (three stars). He was given command of the Australian Corps heading in to the pivotal and final year of the war. Under Monash, the Australians recaptured the town of Villers-Bretonneux in a battle that he called the turning the point of the war. The Battle of Hamel took place on July 4, 1918, with the Australian Corps coming under the overall command of the British 4th Army under General Sir Henry Rawlinson. The army won the battle and because of the brilliance displayed by Monash, he was praised by Rawlinson and sometimes was given command of servicemen from other countries. During the subsequent battles, he led divisions coming from Canada, England, the U.S. as well as Australians. On August 8, 1918, the Battle of Amiens took place. It was one of the first major battles in history to see tanks used on a large scale. The Allied advance was led by the Australians under Monash and utilized his brilliant strategy for attack. The key to the attack was armor and surprise and that is what led the Allies to victory and the beginning of the Hundred Days Offensive that led to the end of the war. The German General Erich Ludendorff called it “the black day of the German Army.” Four days later, King George V knighted Monash on the battlefield, the first time a commander had been bestowed such an honor in over two centuries. He commanded over 200,000 troops past the Hindenburg Line and into Germany, and on October 5, the Germans asked for an armistice. Monash returned to Australia a national hero. He took on several prominent civilian positions including the president of the Zionist Federation of Australia and New Zealand. He died in 1931 and about 250,000 people attended his funeral. He was honored by having a suburb in Australia named Monash and being depicted on the $100 bill. Kfar Monash in Israel is also named after the great hero who is often called the Australian George Washington.

Rabbi Yaakov Thompson What happens in South Florida doesn’t stay in South Florida… anymore. To Life, L’Chaim is a Jewish television news magazine that is shot in South Florida at Shalom Productions in Ft. Lauderdale. L’Chaim airs on Jewish Life TV throughout the United States and Canada. JLTV can be found on Comcast 239, Direct TV 366, and Atlantic Broadband 167 in Miami Beach. South Floridians who tune into the show in prime time at 8pm and 11pm on Tuesday can catch with the latest Jewish news and personalities from the tri-county area. Additionally, nationally known guests add their own take to the South Florida Jewish scene. L’Chaim presents a broad range of guests and news that celebrate the diversity and richness of South Florida Jewry. Bob Pianka, executive producer of L’Chaim, has been involved in TV and radio for over forty years and brings his experience to create a show that spotlights the third largest Jewish community in the world- South Florida! “As a major Jewish community, South Florida plays a vital role in American Jewish life. My vision was to share the achievements of our community with the rest of America and Canada,” explained Pianka. This vision has been realized in the many segments of L’Chaim that present local news in a national context. Although the show is based in Florida, the content represents the very best of the creativity and contributions that Floridians are making to the Jewish community throughout North America. Lee Lazerson, the host of the show, has interviewed many national figures as well such as Professor Alan Dershowitz, actor Josh Malina, Tovah Feldshuh, and Hal Linden. L’Chaim also offers regular stories on Jewish leaders and institutions in Florida, the nation, and around the world. As a regular correspondent for L’Chaim, this reporter has had the privilege of presenting stories about prominent Jews from all walks of life- from Jewish businessmen, rabbis, charities, federations, and Israel bound college students, L’Chaim has moved the South Florida Jewish community into the national spotlight. Covering “hot topics” like circumcision, Holocaust education, and our elected officials, L’Chaim has become a nationally recognized part of the JLTV lineup. In the coming weeks the show will cover Israeli and Jewish artists, Hillel on campus, senior speed-dating, and even a story about this publication. If you are interested in our Jewish community L’Chaim is your source for everything happening in South Florida. Remember to tune in or watch on-line at JLTV.tv. priate or even safe for women with varying physical strengths and exercise habits. What this means to say is – two expectant mothers may be due to go into labor in the same week, but if one of them exercises regularly and the other can't remember the last time she broke a sweat, their exercise routines during pregnancy should be significantly diverse. Before reaching for your gym shoes, the rule of thumb is to tailor your pregnancy-workout routine to your body's needs, and to consult with your physician first. For those who prefer less intensive exercises, the following exercises are healthy in moderation (and proper guidance, of course): •Low-impact aerobics •Yoga •Pilates •Walking •Swimming •Dancing •Indoor (stationary) cycling For those who consider themselves sports enthusiasts, additional activities await: •Jogging •Weightlifting • Elliptical machines • Stairmaster/stair-machines No matter your body type or gym membership, all exercise should be tailored to your personal needs.
Have a Better Pregnancy- Exercise! By: Orlee Yahalom Public Health Fellow
Elisheva Langner, PhD Clinical Health Psychologist Director of Research & Education
Did you ever have daydreams of what life might look like as an expectant mother? Some women imagine that pregnancy will fill them with absolute euphoria; an opportunity for guilt-free midnight snacking and luxurious lounging on the couch in maternal reverie. Despite these expectations, many women find that pregnancy is somewhat less idyllic. Particularly in the last trimester, pregnancy may be full of absolute exhaustion, constant back pain, difficulty sleeping, or overwhelming pre-labor anxiety. This schism between the expectations and the actual experience can be quite stressful and disheartening. There are many different techniques available for women to use in coping with the discomfort, fatigue, or anxiety surrounding pregnancy; however, only one appears to address all of them in tandem: exercise. Fitness and health professionals alike promote exercise as an antidote to the physical and emotional challenges associated with pregnancy. Some benefits to the mother-to-be are the decrease in backaches and other physical discomforts, improvement in posture, better sleep, and increased energy. Exercise also helps build the stamina needed for labor and delivery, as well as decreases the likelihood of preterm delivery. More specifically, those who are susceptible to constipation, varicose veins, pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes during pregnancy can use exercise as a preventative measure that is known to lower the risk of acquiring such conditions. Exercising during pregnancy also relieves stress and is one of the most potent antidotes to depression and anxiety (by promoting the release of serotonin, the “feel good” chemical). These advantages will not only be appreciated by the expectant mother herself, but also by her spouse, children, friends and colleagues. A side benefit to exercising during pregnancy is that it can help keep your weight in check, making it easier to trim your waist post-birth. These benefits are not exclusively for pre-pregnancy pilates protégés, but for bookworms and benchwarmers alike. Although exercise during pregnancy is tantamount for regular, sporadic and infrequent exercisers, experts do indeed differentiate between which fitness activities and routines are appro-
Additionally, there are general guidelines for the types of physical activities that should be avoided by expectant mothers: 1. Holding your breath during any activity. 2. Activities where falling is likely (such as skiing and horseback riding). 3. Contact sports such as softball, football, basketball, and volleyball. 4. Any exercise that may cause even mild abdominal trauma such as activities that include jarring motions or rapid changes in direction. 5. Activities that require extensive jumping, hopping, skipping, bouncing, or running. 6. Deep knee bends, full sit-ups, double leg raises, and straight-leg toe touches. 7. Bouncing while stretching. 8. Waist-twisting movements while standing. 9. Heavy exercise spurts followed by long periods of no activity. 10. Exercise in hot, humid weather 11. Activities that require great balance or coordination (this pertains more to the later stages of pregnancy). One fun, popular and accessible physical activity that is particularly recommended during pregnancy is pre-natal yoga. Research finds that yoga is not only helpful for labor preparation, but also for the health of your baby. This exercise routine consists of breathing exercises, gentle stretching, postures, relaxation, and a cool down. Prenatal yoga can help improve sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, improve the strength, endurance and flexibility needed for childbirth, decrease lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches and shortness of breath, decrease the risk of preterm labor, pregnancy induced hypertension and intrauterine growth restriction (a condition that slows a baby's growth). Whichever exercise you choose to do during this exciting time of your life, don’t forget that you need to drink more to keep your body hydrated—particularly if you are working out. So stay hydrated and have fun! Orlee Yahalom Pubic Health Fellow

The longer you date, the better you will get to know him/her. There comes a point where the economic idea of "law of diminishing returns" kicks in. It always pains me when I hear that a couple has been dating for 2, 3 or 4 or more years. I recall the time that a couple told me they had been dating for a very lengthy time. I asked them, "What more information do the two of you need to have before you can make a decision?" They broke up soon after. (He ended up finding someone and is happily married; not sure what happened to her.)
So don't think you need years upon years to be a 1000% certain that this is the right one. Rather do those things necessary to allow you to see the true nature and personality of another person.
All Jewish Men or Women are ... (fill in the blank). Try not to succumb to this sourgrapes distraction in your moments of frustration. Too often I hear singles kvetch that all Jewish guys or girls are only interested in ... (looks, position, status, the car he drives etc.). You are not marrying an entire race, but just one person. So forget generalities and stereotypes and keep you focus on finding the right one for you.
The Smartest, Prettiest, Most Successful types get married first. Nope, just look around and you will see this is not so. I know of plenty of people who, for the life of me, I cannot understand why they are still single. They seem to have so much going for them smart, successful, good looking, great personality. And then there are those folks who might be termed in popular culture as "losers", yet they have been happily married forever. For every pot there is a lid. So don't compare yourself with anyone; it's not a contest.
Assuming you are not in a long-distance relationship, you can gather enough information about another in 3 - 6 months to know if you can make a happy life with this person There is only one beshert or not. (predestined one) for me. The other day I was giving a class to singles entitled, Top 10 Dating Myths. When I finished, I was waiting for my car at the valet and the young Israeli server at Mozart Café asked me about the class and if I had the material written down to send to her since she was working and could not join our group. I only had my personal notes and was quite confident that they would mean little to her. This being the case I have written them out for those who could not attend our session. So here they are, Netalie and anyone else who may benefit from them.
Firstly we must define out terms. A Myth is something that is popular but not necessarily the truth. It is a notion that we would like to believe to be so but is not. With this is mind and in no particular order here they are:
The more you make yourself available, the better your chance to find the right one. Not really and actually maybe the opposite is true. People value something that isn't so readily
It does not mean you have to get married right away, but if you date properly - actively and not passively - you can get to know a person quite well pretty quickly. What I mean by actively dating is that your dates are not about fun or hanging in Starbucks but doing those things where you can see the person in real life situations so you can properly assess their personality and see what makes them tick.
The belief that living together to get a proper sense of another is a submyth of this. Your goal is not to examine every idiosyncrasy of another. Actually it will just give you plenty of reason not to marry another. As Rebbetzin Heller of Jerusalem remarks, given that every human being has faults and it is endemic to the human condition, deciding whom you are going to marry is just as much about deciding which faults you are willing to live with for the rest of your life.
There is an idea in Judaism that states, "40 days before you are born, a heavenly voice proclaims, 'So and so will marry so and so.'"And indeed there may be a perfect person out there for you. But since there is no beshert app or beshert-o-meter, you may never know it. It always concerns me when I hear of couples telling me of the coincidences that make them lead to believe they are each other's beshert. Any coincidences are better to be viewed in retrospect once you are happily married and should not be used in the decision-making process before-hand. Next Issue I will continue with the second half of our Top 10 Dating Myths. And as I have mentioned before, if you are already in a happy relationship, please pass this on to someone who is still looking. Rabbi Tzvi Nightingale Aish South Florida

available. Gold and diamonds are valued because they are scarce. So don't go out with every person you mother's hairdresser suggests. Do some homework to make sure this fellow or young lady is in the ball park. (And puleeze don't tell us what you are doing every moment of your day on facebook. Most of us don't care and it just makes you look silly and/or insecure.) Date for quality, not quantity. Don't view yourself as a piece of merchandise where you have to get your name out there as much as possible to be bought.

Parenting 1. Don’t Wait For it to Happen By Itself. How often we all say the very words that diminish independence, even when we are trying so hard to foster it! We experience such joy to see our children happy with friends… OK, stay out a bit later and I’ll clean up for you. We get frustrated by their slow pace… Never mind, I’ll do it myself. We get nervous from seeing them do things “wrong”… Here, give it to me, I’ll do it for you. In the moment we feel so nurturing, so “there” for our children, but at 15 years old, when our children still expect it, is that the parenting we wish to provide? Independence does not develop spontaneously, but is a learned behavior, and the sooner our children learn it, the better off they will be.
TIPS
for keeping a neat room and knapsack, it is important for your child to know that there are standards of performance that are non-negotiable. You will foster a good work ethic and a feeling of efficacy as your child sees that he/she can do it.
Mrs. Hebel’s
Top Ten Tips
8. Offer an Allowance. An oldie but a goodie: allowances give children the opportunity to make decisions, weigh pros and cons, and to be cautious with their spending. My son recently shared with me that he’d figured out that it is far better to buy a few less expensive treats than to blow all his money on one costly one. “You get much more for your money,” he sagely informed me as though he’d invented the concept. But in a way he did – he came to this understanding on his own in a way that he never could have learned from me.
FOR FOSTERING INDEPENDENCE
2. Encourage Your Child. Adopt a “you can do and you will do it” approach. Through words and actions, let your child know that you believe in his/her ability to learn how to do things and to do them well. Be patient as your child’s skills develop. If your child seems too dependent on you, observe or even ask outright what the problem is and come up with creative ways to overcome it. Of course there are times that you should help your child – but stepping in too often says “you are not competent” and stifles self esteem, initiative and independence. Use the following question as a barometer: is this something I hope my child will be able to do alone some day? If so… start today! 3. Involve Your Children in Decisions. Decision-making is a skill that some children need to be taught. The first step is brainstorming possibilities. Next is reviewing the list and seeing the pros and cons of each. Then comes narrowing the list down to the best few. Finally, the actual decision must be made. Engage your child consciously in each step. From choosing a supper menu to being part of a discussion on how to spend a family vacation, there are endless opportunities for your child to learn to be decisive and purposeful. 4. Let Them Make–and Live with– Choices. Often, the best lessons learned are the ones that are learned the hard way. If you see your child making choices that are not responsible, share your feelings and even warn them of where those decisions may take them. It is so painful to watch your child fail or suffer consequences, but let your child make the choices unless you see a potential danger. Then, instead of saying, “I told you so,” help
your child learn from the mistakes by letting them tell you what they learned. 5. Be a Reflective Listener. Your child probably comes home with all sorts of concerns. Homework, friends, the teacher, the ball game… Listen with love and patience but don’t solve the problems! Validate your child with caring statements like, “Wow, that sounds tough” and then reflect the problem back by asking, “What are you going to do?” Keep asking questions that guide your child to figure out solutions on their own and to take initiative independently. 6. Let Your Children Earn Privledges. As a parent, you may be drawn to the aisles in stores that carry all the goodies your children love… and as a parent, it is critical to learn where to draw the line. In real life, rewards are generally earned through hard work. Gifts and privileges are wonderful ways to demonstrate love and bring joy. A gift that will last a lifetime, though, is the gift of understanding that we earn through effort. Aside from that, earning builds self-esteem far more than the “freebies” do 7. Give Responsibility. Let your child develop good habits in childhood. Whether you have set chores or academic expectations, ask your child to help out with younger siblings or just hold him/her accountable
9. Let Go. The more you allow your child to do, the more independent he/she will become. Your child may be happy to be more independent you allow it. Easier said than done, unfortunately. Letting your child cook, wax creative, run errands and the like can wear down your nerves, and the neatness of your house. Let go, even when it is hard. The long term benefits are worth the extra clean up! 10. Value the Process Over the Product. If you think back to how you became independent, you will probably remember failures and lessons learned, being caught in situations wherein you had no choice but to step up to the plate and moments of pride when you felt, “Hey, I can do this.” Those moments are gone and the actual accomplishments may be forgotten, but the growth process was invaluable. Throughout your parenting years, keep your eye on the future and try to remember that whatever you are endeavoring for your child to achieve at the moment is probably less important that the process through which he/ she gets there.
