By Deborah Busemeyer People buying insurance on the new health insurance marketplace will be guaranteed a certain package of benefits, from free medical screenings to mental-health care. By now, many people have signed up and are already covered by this program, and enrollment remains open until the end of March.

New behavioral-health coverage Care for mental health diagnoses and substance-abuse treatment is one of the 10 categories of “essential benefits” that insurance companies selling on the exchange are required to cover under the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The federal government determined the “essential benefits” by analyzing states’ health plans across the country. Larry Martinez, Presbyterian Medical Services’ director of New Mexico’s north-central region, said this represents a significant shift in the delivery of behavioral-health services, which includes mental-

New required health-insurance coverage

health and substance-abuse care: “I think we, as a society, are getting more realistic about the importance of behavioral-health care. It’s a critical piece of the Affordable Care Act and a major component of Centennial Care [New Mexico Medicaid program] that the New Mexico Human Services Department is implementing effective January 1. Both efforts are pushing very hard for a high level of integration between behavioral health and medical care. That integration is going to be critical to us being much more effective and efficient in how we deliver health-care services.” As part of PMS’ services, the Santa Fe Community Guidance Center cares for adults and children who need care for a range of medical diagnoses, including people who have severe mental illness and individuals who are highly functional but need care for such conditions as depression, anxiety or the dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse. The National Association of Community Health Centers reported that 70 percent of people who visit a primary-care doctor or nurse have a behavioral-health condition when they seek care, Martinez said. This surprisingly large number illustrates society’s need to address behavioral health and to “recognize that many physical maladies affecting people’s need to get health-care services have a behavioral-health origin,” he said. Martinez said that traditionally, health-insurance companies have placed more limits on their coverage of behavioral-health services compared to physical medical care. “Essentially what the new environment is doing is treating behavioral health the same way as physical medical care. If you need the service, you will get it paid for,” he said. La Familia Medical Center, where Dr. Neal Devitt has provided primary care for the past 29 years, cares for patients regardless of their ability to pay for services. Still, it can be difficult for doctors and nurses to arrange specialty care for their patients, Devitt said. “Behavioral health is really one area where it’s very difficult to get indigent patients seen in Santa Fe,” he said. “I hope now that those things are covered it will make psychiatric care more accessible.” Devitt mentioned several benefits to individuals and society as a whole due to the mandated benefits; if individuals are healthier, society thrives. There are also gaps in the care — people who are not legal citizens cannot get coverage through the exchange, and there are some plans that don’t have to offer the essential benefits, such as large group or self-funded plans.

Free preventive coverage is key Those who can get the new benefits will get free prevention services. Now all insurance companies selling policies on the health exchange are required to pay for mammograms, for

Essential health benefits for plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace • Ambulatory patient services (outpatient care without being

admitted to a hospital) • Emergency services • Hospitalization • Maternity and newborn care (care before and after your baby is born) • Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment (includes counseling and psychotherapy) • Prescription drugs • Rehabilitative services and devices to help people with injuries, disabilities or chronic conditions gain or recover mental and physical skills • Laboratory services • Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management • Pediatric services

Free preventive services All Health Insurance Marketplace plans and many other plans must cover a variety of free preventive services without charging you a co-payment or coinsurance, even if you haven’t met your yearly deductible. This applies only when these services are delivered by a network provider. Some of these free services include:

• Abdominal aortic aneurysm one-time screening for men of specified ages who have ever smoked • Alcohol misuse screening and counseling • Aspirin use to prevent cardiovascular disease for men and women of certain ages • Breast cancer mammography screenings every 1 to 2 years for women older than 40 • Blood pressure screening for all adults • Cervical cancer screening for sexually active women • Children: A wide range of preventive care is now free for children, including a variety of behavioral and physical screenings, development, vision and immunizations. • Cholesterol screening for adults of certain ages or at higher risk • Colorectal cancer screening for adults older than 50 • Contraception: FDA-approved contraceptive methods, as prescribed by a health care provider • Depression screening • Type 2 diabetes screening for adults with high blood pressure • Diet counseling for adults at higher risk for chronic disease • HIV screening for everyone ages 15 to 65, and other ages at risk • Immunizations • Obesity screening and counseling • Osteoporosis screening for women older than age 60 depending on risk factors • Sexually transmitted infection prevention counseling • Syphilis screening for all adults at higher risk • Tobacco use screening for all adults and cessation interventions for tobacco users • Well-woman visits to get recommended services for women younger than 65 Source: www.healthcare.gov, a website managed by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Health & Wellness

example, for their insured members. Santa Fe already has a safety-net system for people who can’t afford care, yet Devitt said they don’t always know about services available, or the services are restricted to certain populations. For example, there is a state-federal program that pays for breast and cervical cancer screening for some people who earn low incomes. “I think there are some people who have a certain shame, unfortunately, [around] availing themselves of a free program,” Devitt said. “Having them as a basic benefit within the law, I think, will improve the utilization of those services.” The mandated coverage is also beneficial to society, Devitt added. Insurers are required to cover maternity and newborn care and cannot set lifetime limits for how much they will pay for patients to receive care. Getting care and vaccinations for babies will reduce the chance of preventable diseases circulating in the community, he said. Prenatal care is essential too, to prevent babies from being born too early. “Getting people in early with good prenatal care is a tremendous benefit to society as a whole in terms of avoiding long-term medical costs and effects on learning capacity,” Devitt said. Beyond the essential benefits, the law will help people who have serious diseases because insurance companies can no longer put a lifetime limit on how much they will pay for patients’ care. Devitt said that change will save some people from bankruptcy.

Keeping healthy One of the focuses of federal health care reform is keeping people healthy rather than reimbursing more for each patient procedure. “That has just not been the trend in this country. We’ve been built on volume and fee for service,” said Dr. Martin Hickey, CEO of New Mexico Health Connections. Hickey saw this shift as a rare opportunity to build a primary-care-based system that coordinates care, gets people healthier and saves money, he said. Hickey started his career in the Navajo Nation and then worked in Albuquerque at various institutions — Veteran’s Administration, University of New Mexico and Lovelace — before leaving New Mexico in 2002 to work in New York and Nebraska. He moved back to New Mexico to start New Mexico Health Connections, the state’s newest health-insurance company selling private and business plans on the state’s insurance exchange. The nonprofit Albuquerque-based company will reward primary-care physicians and their teams financially for improving patients’ health. “Our philosophy here and the only way to make money is to keep our members in a better state of health,” Hickey said. One way Health Connections plans to keep members healthy is by investing in a team of promotoras, also known as health 10

outreach workers, who can visit people’s homes to educate them about how to keep their chronic diseases, like diabetes, under control so they don’t suffer serious complications. They can help patients overcome barriers in their families that prevent them from eating in a healthy way or taking their medications. “Community health workers can go in and find out about spouse friction or who can’t get food and see what they can do to help with socioeconomic underlying issues in a household — so mom has a greater sense of security and can focus more on the health of the children,” Hickey said. “At the end of the day, most of us take care of ourselves because other people in our family or friends care about us. Reinforcing and helping families to understand the medications and what needs to be done to make sure someone’s healthy plays a large role too.” Since health care reform prevents health insurance companies from dropping sick patients, those companies have more motivation for keeping their insured members healthy. Hickey is reducing or eliminating costs associated with getting preventive care as another way to keep people healthier. New Mexico Health Connections won’t charge a co-pay for all chronic-disease medications or for a patient’s first three visits to mental-health or substance-abuse treatment care. “We want people to take advantage of this because we think they’ll be healthier and generate less cost for us and less health dysfunction for themselves if they are getting the care they need,” Hickey said. If you are in need of health insurance and haven’t yet signed up, there’s still time. The federal government has extended the first enrollment deadline to March 31. Go to bewellnm.com or call 1-855-996-6449 to compare plans and find a local health care guide for help navigating through this process. Cooking with the family is a fun activity — and serious business. If it’s shaped into a positive routine where the entire family can join in the process, chances are good that it will inform a lifetime of healthy eating habits. While advanced menu planning and pre-emptive pantry stocking may not always be the center of activity inside the average home, preparing and eating a meal together as a family is worth the effort. For most of us, nutritional habits begin at our parents’ dinner table and are either reinforced or reinvented as we age. With a little conscious attention and planning, enjoying a meal cooked with the family can easily become a regular practice. 12

“Food preferences are determined at early ages,” said Lynn Walters, founder and executive director of Cooking with Kids, a nonprofit organization in Santa Fe that fills a much-needed component in nutritional education, one that engages children and families to cook together — with the belief that cooking can be fun and have lifelong benefits.

Keep it simple There are several ways to get started on familial culinary adventures. Walters said that making the process simple and inclusive is always best. From choosing the menu and ingredients to post-meal chores, cooking as a family should be thought of as a fun activity. She has a few tips to get started. “Children need simple, clear and specific directions,” said Walters. “Little ones love to scrub vegetables with a brush and a

[half-filled] tub of water. Even young children can peel garlic or shell peas.” And rolling dough for pizza, flatbread or tortillas is something the entire family can do together. “Most children love to tear leafy herbs into tiny pieces,” continued Walters. “This can replace mincing with a knife. Butter knives work quite well on many vegetables, like zucchini, yellow squash and tomatoes. Tearing lettuces and greens for salad is easy and a great way to demonstrate being gentle.” Perhaps the most significant tip Walters offers is to “be aware of your own expectations.” In other words, instead of expecting to create a culinary masterpiece, relax and have fun. She added that everyone works best with praise and encouragement, including the seemingly inconsequential tasks of cleaning up after the meal is prepared and enjoyed. To be sure, a homecooked meal that is lovingly prepared by the entire family may not necessarily equal a nutritious outcome, but it certainly puts the family back in control of what and how it eats. It is this tenet of self-empowerment, particularly in

young people, that Cooking with Kids has firmly advocated throughout its 18-year history. “Cooking is the one way to have facility of truly taking care of ourselves,” said Walters. Practice makes perfect, but when it comes to cooking, it’s the practice that counts. “Kids need multiple exposures to food to develop their preferences,” said Laura McCann, a registered dietician at La Familia Medical Center. “They may refuse it the first time but accept it the next time. Research suggests that kids need 15 exposures to a food to accept it. There is also research that shows kids are more willing to try healthy foods like fruits and vegetables if they are more involved in planning and preparing meals.” This is a sentiment echoed by Walters and a cornerstone of the Cooking with Kids model, where long-term success is ensured with the entire family having a particular role in the meal prep. Involving children in cooking healthy foods invests them in both the process and the outcome. “It’s the same thing with gardening,” said McCann. “If kids are invested in planting, growing and harvesting and eventually preparing, they are much more likely to eat healthy foods that they will otherwise refuse.”

Cooking with Kids In operation since 1995, Cooking with Kids aims to educate and empower children and their families to make healthy food choices. Their method is through hands-on learning, using fresh and affordable foods. This year they will guide more than 5,000 Santa Fe public school students from preschool through sixth grade in preparing foods from all over the world. The children cook in small groups with a parent or teacher assisting. A Cooking with Kids staff introduces the ingredients they will use and talks about the country where the food originates. Last fall, students learned about Italy while they made fettuccine and talked about Mexico as they made tamales. This school semester, kids will be making and tasting North African tagine, Middle Eastern falafel and tomato cucumber salad and French potatoes persillade with spinach salad. More than 1,300 family volunteers participate in Cooking with Kids classes each year. After each cooking class, kids are sent home with a booklet that includes the recipe they made as well as information about the ingredients used and a map of the country studied. Cooking with Kids connects its classes and nutrition education to student learning by meeting Common Core State Standards in language arts, math and health education. Also, it works with school cafeterias to serve Cooking With Kids meals twice a month as the school lunch. At schools that have gardens, such as Amy Biehl Community School, a Cooking with Kids staff person manages the garden, and students help cultivate produce that are used in recipes. The kids contribute compost, such as peelings from carrots and cucumbers, to the garden. North African Tajine, Couscous and Chermoula Couscous

In Morocco, tajine means both a traditional stew and the type of special clay pot that it is cooked in. The pot has a shallow bottom and a domeshaped top. Meats, vegetables and even fruits are cooked together slowly with a mix of spices. There are many types of tajines. This easy vegetable tajine is made with onion, sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnip and turnip and flavored with cinnamon, cumin and coriander and served over couscous. For even more flavor, top the tajine with a spoonful of chermoula.

1 1/2 cups water 1 1/2 cups couscous 1/4 teaspoon salt

Make the couscous: In a saucepan,

bring the water to a boil over high heat. Add the couscous and salt. Stir once or twice. Cover the pan and turn off the heat. Do not stir. Let the couscous sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Fluff with a fork. To serve: Spoon tajine over couscous and top with a small dollop of chermoula, if desired.

North African Tajine

Serves 8 2 tablespoons butter 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger root (about 1-inch piece) 1 onion, chopped 1 teaspoon ground turmeric 2 sweet potatoes, cut into 3/4-inch pieces (5 cups) 2 carrots, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch thick slices 1 parsnip, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch thick slices 1 turnip, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch thick slices 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground mild red chile 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 4 cups broth, chicken or vegetable 1 cinnamon stick 1 can (15-ounce) chickpeas

lynn walters

Make the tajine: Wash all the vegetables. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the ginger, onion, and turmeric and cook about 4 minutes, stirring often, until the onions are soft and golden. Add the sweet potatoes, carrots, turnip, parsnip, cumin, coriander, red chile, salt and pepper. SautĂŠ until the spices are fragrant but not burnt or bitter-smelling, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the broth and cinnamon stick, stirring to combine. Bring to boiling and then reduce the heat to medium-low and cover. Simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are cooked through and tender. Add the chickpeas and cook for 5 minutes more. Remove the cinnamon stick before serving.

Chermoula is a sauce or marinade that is very common in North African cooking. It can be made and used in many ways, from marinating fish to a sauce for vegetables. Moroccan chermoula almost always includes garlic, cilantro, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. This version substitutes our New Mexican red chile for the paprika.

Chermoula

1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon ground red chile 2 cups washed and chopped cilantro leaves 1/4 cup olive oil 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice In a mortar and pestle or food processor, grind the garlic, salt, pepper, cumin and red chile to form a paste. Add the cilantro leaves in small amounts and grind until the mixture forms a paste. Stir in the olive oil and lemon juice until well combined. Chermoula will stay fresh for 2 to 3 days if stored in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container.

Oranges with Fresh Mint 6 oranges, peeled and sectioned 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint leaves

Wash the oranges and mint leaves. Cut each orange section into about 3 pieces and put into a bowl. Add the chopped mint leaves and stir gently to combine.

Fresh Green & White Fettuccine

Serves 4 to 6 It is exciting for children to learn where pasta comes from. It is just like any other dough, fun to make and easy to handle. Handcranked pasta machines work just fine, but it is surprisingly easy to roll out pasta the old fashioned way.

White Fettuccine

1 cup unbleached white flour 1 cup semolina flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon olive oil 1/3 cup water + 1 tablespoon Make white fettuccine dough: In a bowl, mix together the white

flour, semolina flour and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, oil and water. Add the wet ingredients to the dry mix and stir together until a rough-looking dough forms. On a clean, lightly floured work surface knead the dough for 2 to 3 minutes, until it is no longer sticky. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for 5 minutes. Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces.

Green Fettuccine

1 cup fresh spinach leaves, washed 1 cup unbleached white flour 1 cup semolina flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon olive oil 1/3 cup water

amount of water until boiling. Add the spinach and cook, covered, for 1 to 2 minutes, until the spinach is wilted, but still bright green. Use a strainer to drain the spinach, squeezing out as much liquid as possible. Chop the spinach. Follow the instructions for the white fettuccine dough, but add the chopped spinach to the egg, olive oil, and water. Follow the directions for mixing, kneading, and cutting the white fettuccine dough. Rolling dough with a hand crank pasta machine: Start with the most open setting. Flatten each piece of dough and put it through the machine. Fold each piece of dough in half and put it through the machine again. Remember to fold the dough in half before feeding it through the machine the second time. Change the pasta machine setting to the middle setting. Feed each piece of dough through the machine two times at setting #3. Fold the dough in half before feeding it into the machine the second time. Change the machine to the thinnest setting and repeat. Move the hand crank to the fettuccine cutter on the pasta machine. Carefully feed each sheet of dough through the cutter. Hang the pasta over clean dowels or lay in a single layer on cookie sheets dusted with semolina flour. Variation: Rolling dough by hand: On a clean work surface dusted with semolina flour, roll the dough into a flat rectangular shape. Fold the dough into thirds and roll again. Repeat this folding and rolling process four to six times until the dough is very smooth and is about 1/16- inch thick. Sprinkle the finished piece with semolina flour and loosely roll up like a jellyroll. Use a sharp knife to slice through the rolled pasta dough every 1/4 inch. Carefully unroll the fettuccine and hang over clean dowels or lay it in a single layer on cookie sheets dusted with semolina flour. Roll, fold and cut the remaining pieces of dough as described above. Cook the fettuccine: Put 12 cups of water in a large pot and bring to a boil over high heat. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add the fettuccine and stir once. Cook the pasta over high heat for 3 to 5 minutes, until “al dente.” Drain the pasta in a colander. Serve immediately, topped with tomato sauce and freshly grated cheese (optional).

Tomato Basil Sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 pounds ripe tomatoes (10 to 12 medium), washed and diced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons washed and chopped fresh basil 2 ounces grated Asiago or Parmesan cheese (optional) In a saucepan, heat the olive oil and garlic over medium-high heat. Sauté for 10 seconds, until fragrant but not browned. Add the diced tomatoes and stir to combine. Reduce the heat to medium, cover, and let simmer for about 10 minutes, until the mixture becomes juicy. Remove from heat and stir in the salt, pepper and chopped fresh basil. © 2013 Cooking with Kids, Inc. All rights reserved. www.cookingwithkids.net

One of Santa Fe’s

best-kept secrets Wellness center gym offers health, encouragement By Kay Lockridge • photo kerry sherck When Lou Frosh’s doctor referred him to the gym at what was then St. Vincent Regional Hospital in 1993, he expected to spend 12 weeks, three times a week in out-patient rehab for a heart attack. Twenty years later, now 92 and a community member, Frosh still comes to the gym most Monday and Friday afternoons. Center for Living Well gym is one of Santa Fe’s best-kept secrets. It is located in the basement of the lower level on the southeast side of the hospital, now called Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center. Most people initially are sent to the gym by their doctors because of cardiac and/or pulmonary problems. Medicare or other insurance programs usually cover those assignments. Many then choose to stay on — at their own expense — for their own healthful pursuits. Others join the program as community members for relatively low fees. They are joined by hospital staff, who pay only $10 a month for access to the gym, as well as hospital volunteers, who may attend the gym for free at any time during regular hours. The gym, a single cavernous room packed with up-to-date cardio and weight machines, offers little in the way of amenities. There is no locker room, no swimming pool. There is a large area in the back devoted to simple stretching efforts and warm-up. This area includes space for Zumba classes, both regular and Zumba Gold. The latter offers seated Zumba, which, as one participant said, is “the hardest I’ve ever worked sitting down.”

Center for Living Well Gym Community memberships include a general fitness assessment, group fitness classes and program set ups of one half-hour each by certified fitness instructors for cardio and weight programs. Members may sign up for extended personal training at additional cost. Members must complete a health history and release form. Those with a history of medical problems, currently taking medication or possessing risk factors for heart disease must obtain a written physician’s release. All members must be at least 18 years of age. The gym is open to all members Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon. Various classes and supervised activities, including Zumba, are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday, depending on instructor availability. You must become a member to use the gym. Memberships, which allow unlimited use of the gym, run $470 for 12 months, $275 for six months, $145 for three months and $30 for 10 visits. Long-term memberships of at least three months may be placed on hold for a minimum of two weeks at a time, should the need arise. For more information, call 505-913-5722.

Overall, one comes ready to work out under the guidance of certified health and fitness instructors Christa Hern and Ed Rael. “We can put together a complete program of exercise, depending on the individual’s needs, or we can oversee a person’s selfdetermined program,” Hern said. Pat Gonzales came to the gym eight years ago with heart problems. She decided to become an ongoing community member because of the camaraderie and atmosphere of disciplined exercise. “We’re like a family here,” Gonzales said. “I look forward to coming to the gym usually three times a week, both to socialize and to work out. There are some exercises I could do alone at home, but I know I probably wouldn’t without the encouragement and shared effort.” Realtor Jamie Sloan, who entered the cardio-pulmonary rehab in 2011, agreed. “It’s a great group of people here, both the staff and participants. I feel safe [at the gym], because there’s medical help at hand, if I should need it.” “It’s also more comfortable at this gym than commercial gyms,” said attorney Maryanne Reilly, who first came to the Wellness Center gym after suffering a catastrophic stroke. “Most other gyms have issues regarding disabled people; they are unprepared to deal with participants’ possible medical needs and are concerned about liability. This gym works with disabled people on whatever level the individual may be.” Henry Bransford suffered grievous injuries, including losing an arm, in a motorcycle accident 30 years ago. He was able to work until he developed breathing problems due to an undetected lung problem caused by the crash. Bransford was referred to the gym for rehab. For the first time, he was able to develop an exercise program just for him. “With this gym, I can keep up my exercise and stay healthy, something I didn’t think would be possible with my pulmonary problems,” Bransford said. “I’m even having fun [exercising], something I never contemplated. The most surprising thing is Zumba; I thought that was only for young, healthy people.” Mike Carrillo, who’s been coming to the gym the past eight years, suggested Zumba isn’t for him, but he makes the gym a regular part of his weekly schedule. Carrillo first was referred to the Center for Living Well for heart-related concerns after triple bypass surgery. “‘As long as you keep running, they can’t throw dirt over you,’” Carrillo quoted his heart doctor, who inspired Carrillo to keep exercising regularly, as saying. The treadmill has become a staple in Carrillo’s program. Frosh summed up the gym’s influence when he said: “Everyone needs exercise all [his or her] life. This gym helps keep me healthy and happy. You can’t ask for much more than that at any age.”

Preparing children story By Kay Lockridge photos by jane phillips

What is a healthy community, and how is it sustained?

From left, Katelyn Gurule, watches Emmanuel Lopez, brush the stuffed animals teeth while they wait their turn to see Dr. Ron Romero for preventive care.

Katherine Freeman, United Way’s executive director, has thought a lot about that. “We — Santa Fe Public Schools and United Way of Santa Fe County — asked ourselves those questions and realized the answers were fairly simple,” Freeman said. “A healthy community is one that focuses on and takes care of its own, beginning and continuing with the children and their families.” One way to do this is through an effective early-childhood development program, which, according to Freeman, “prepares young children for success in school on day one, thus benefiting the child, the family and the community.”

Schools, United Way partner for early learning

With that in mind and a formal resolution proposed by SFPS Superintendent Joel Boyd in hand, the two nonprofit groups vowed last fall to establish within a year a comprehensive early-learning facility, the Santa Fe Early Learning Center, on the campus of what has been the Agua Fría Elementary School. The project is on track, anticipating the closing of the elementary school at the end of May. Ten years ago, Santa Fe’s United Way changed its focus, evolving from handling simple outreach and fundraising for a variety of local nonprofits to directing its resources exclusively to early-childhood initiatives. These initiatives coalesced into the Children’s Project, receiving support from SFPS, the city of Santa Fe and local businesses. The Center will build on existing United Way-sponsored programs, such as postpartum home visits, child care, pre-kindergarten classes, parenting-support workshops and classes, physical and mental health support and professional development. The Center will also develop a new program for caregivers that will work with extended families, friends and neighbors. “When health services — mental and physical — work alongside early and adult education, the array of services brought to bear on the family as a whole has a multiplicative effect that has a much greater impact on child and family success,” Freeman said. According to Freeman, all these programs, which are free to participants and supported by United Way, will serve Santa Fe’s “most vulnerable children and their families in a full-day, full-care facility.” As many as 200 children plus their families will be involved in the programs at the new center. Freeman was quick to point out that United Way’s established Early Learning Center, at a facility adjacent to the Aspen Community Magnet School on La Madera Street, will continue. “Children need all the resources at hand,” she said. “The Center will serve the entire Santa Fe Public School District, with a special focus on the neighborhood comprising the four elementary school enrollment zones between Agua Fría Street and Cerrillos Road, south of Siler Road and extending across Airport Road,” Freeman said. About 365 babies are born to families in the Center’s

neighborhood each year, and the children have a 95-percent chance of living in poverty and a 75-percent chance of failing in school, she said. “We [the citizens of Santa Fe County] cannot and must not let this continue; we can and will make a difference for the children and their families, as well as for the entire Santa Fe community,” Freeman said. Leading the way for the early-childhood center was the Early Childhood Steering Committee that included, in addition to United Way and SFPS, representatives from Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, the city and county of Santa Fe, Presbyterian Medical Services, the Santa Fe Community Foundation and the Brindle Foundation. The Committee began meeting monthly in late 2012 and accepted Boyd’s resolution in October of 2013. Attention next turned to the Agua Fría campus, which includes four buildings. Two will be demolished; another will be renovated and house the city’s Head Start program and the Nye Early Childhood Center for kids who have developmental disabilities; and a historic adobe will house United Way offices for service staff. A new 25,000-squarefoot building will be constructed for classrooms, conference rooms and support space, with a small health clinic planned for the future. The schools and United Way are fundraising in phases as work commences on the demolition of the two existing buildings that will be replaced by new construction. Santa Fe Public Schools will handle the renovation of the other building, and United Way will absorb the costs of updating the interior of the old adobe building. Freeman credited Boyd and school board President Linda Trujillo with supporting the project. “This partnership, with the support of the entire community, is the driving force behind a new day and bright future for Santa Fe, its children and families,” Freeman said. Boyd concurred, saying the partnership and new program will “ensure that every child who participates enters kindergarten ready for school.” For more information about United Way, call 505-216-2984 or go to www.uwsfc.org.

When the body heals the mind Two alternative methods address PTSD symptoms

By Emily Drabanski Life — for even the healthiest individuals — can sometimes throw a dramatic curveball. A traumatic event can profoundly change a person’s health. It could come in the form of a violent attack, a vehicle crash, a home fire or a wartime experience. These folks may receive immediate medical attention, yet many continue to suffer for years. Recurring nightmares, sudden flashbacks, panic attacks and a myriad of other anxiety and depression symptoms could indicate that the individual suffers from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). 20

Health & Wellness

If you think you or a family member might be suffering from PTSD, your health care provider can give you an accurate diagnosis and recommend treatment. Some typical treatments include cognitive behavior therapy, exposure therapy and EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). There are also a variety of alternative health care providers who offer other treatments, as well. Two Santa Feans are using very different approaches to unlock emotional blockages that they say are deeply embedded within the PTSD sufferer’s bodies.

Healing through touch Kirsten Mundt said she and other bodyworkers often discover

“I learned that healing happens in stillness. The body holds grief and stress, until we learn how to release it. I cried a lot, but I released the grief that I had been holding inside.” — Kirsten Mundt

that certain body points trigger past emotions. She has studied a variety of healing bodywork modalities (Swedish massage, craniosacral therapy and shiatsu), but said her training with the Boulder, Colo.-based Hakomi Institute helped her integrate her bodywork with the institute’s mindful, body-centered awareness methodologies to treat clients with PTSD. Since 2003, Mundt has worked as a bodyworker at the Life Healing Center of Santa Fe, a residential treatment center for people suffering from addiction and/or trauma, as part of a team that includes mental-health professionals. She also works through the offices of the GRD Health Center and Zephyrus of Santa Fe, both at 460 St. Michael’s Drive, as well as through her

own private practice. Seeking her own healing, she lived for two years in a Buddhist monastery, beginning in 1997. “I learned that healing happens in stillness,” Mundt said. “The body holds grief and stress, until we learn how to release it. I cried a lot, but I released the grief that I had been holding inside.” Today that experience is brought into her bodywork. “There are ways of making contact and finding a place of stillness. [The client and I] can be silent and find a way of touching a place of grief together — in places of energetic contraction, which I would describe as a stuck emotion,” she said. “Once we identify that place, the body starts to unwind — whether it’s rage or fear. We hold that in a place of presence.” Mundt has witnessed healing through her bodywork with veterans, survivors of sexual violence and others with PTSD. She said some clients, such as those who suffered from childhood abuse, often respond very well to bodywork, which is a nonverbal way of communicating what the client experienced even before they had words to describe what happened. She said it’s wonderful when someone develops “a wholeness of the self. There’s self-love where there was once hatred.” For information call 505-467-9836.

Somatic Experiencing Dr. Daniel Bruce, a doctor of Oriental medicine, uses a different approach to treat PTSD. He incorporates a healing modality known as Somatic Experiencing, which is generally a short-term treatment, according to Bruce. “This is based on the premise that trauma is held in the body or nervous system somatically,” he said. “Unlike in cognitive therapy, the practitioner is less interested in the narrative of the trauma.” He said typically he and the client sit across from one another. “I guide the clients into their bodies, to the traumatic material that is held in their bodies,” he said. Bruce emphasized that this is a gentle approach that is done in a way that should not traumatize the clients anew. “They generally close their eyes — if they are comfortable with that — and I guide them to bring an awareness to where they are feeling anxious,” Bruce said. “I invite them to give attention to a specific area where the sensations are being held and be with it. Perhaps, it is in breathing or a racing heart. When the sensation is held with awareness, it can be discharged or processed out.” There’s another method used in Somatic Experiencing. “We [practitioners] call it ‘resourcing.’ We find a place in the body that holds discomfort and we find an external way to create something in the world that nourishes the client.” He explained that these external ways are pleasurable, lifeenhancing activities: “So when the client starts feeling the bodily discomfort, they can turn to these external resources such as gardening, walking or petting their cat.” Somatic Experiencing differs from bodywork. “Sometimes, I will use a light touch to help bring awareness to a part of the body. But it is not a form of bodywork,” Bruce said. Find out more at www.danieljbruce.com or call 505-988-5106. Health & Wellness

Complaining about lack of sleep is likely to get you no sympathy. “Join the crowd,” your friends are apt to say. And they’re right. Some 40 million Americans report suffering from more than 70 different sleep disorders, and 60 percent of adults say they have sleep problems a few nights a week or more, according to surveys by the National Sleep Foundation. Those 70 sleep disorders start with the common conditions most of us have heard of — insomnia (whether it’s difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep), snoring and restless legs syndrome. The less familiar include disorders such as sleepwalking, sleep talking, sleep bruxism (nocturnal tooth grinding) and hypersomnia (when a person sleeps longer than normal and it’s difficult to wake up). But there are some simple self-help tips that might ease your wearied state. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School offers these guidelines:

• Have a night-time routine. Take a relaxing bath, read a book and go to sleep in a dark room, preferably at the same time every night. • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine because they interfere with sleep. • Decrease the size of your evening meal or eat dinner earlier in the evening. Whatever type of sleep disorder you might be dealing with, the resulting effects vary widely but can often escalate. Feeling tired or sluggish is just the beginning. Results of sleep-deprivation can start with moodiness, irritability and loss Courtesy Christus St. Vincent Regional Sleep Center

of inhibition and can progress to apathy, slowed speech, impaired memory and an inability to multitask. You can get into a traffic accident from brief 5- to 10-second nod-offs (“micro sleeps”) while driving. Sleep deficiency is also connected to such chronic health problems as heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, obesity and depression, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. But how do you know whether your sleep problems rate a more serious examination — possibly a visit to your doctor? If you’ve tried all the above tips and your sleeping is still a problem, Dr. Michael Baten, medical director of the Christus St. Vincent Regional Sleep Center, offers a checklist for troubleshooting sleep problems. If two or more of the following apply to you, there may be a serious sleep problem:

• • • • • • • • • • • •

I have been told I snore. I wake up tired or worn out or exhausted. I have excessive daytime sleepiness. I have difficulty falling asleep or remaining asleep. I have been told I stop breathing while I sleep. I have fallen asleep while reading. It’s often hard for me to stay awake while driving. I often have a loss of concentration. I wake up gasping. I wake up with a sore throat. I wake up with pain and numbness in my legs. I frequently wake up to use the bathroom.

Relief from sleep apnea One serious sleep problem is sleep apnea. About half of Americans with sleep disorders have the condition, some 22 million, according to the American Sleep Apnea Association. In sleep apnea, either there is a blockage of the airway caused by the tongue and the soft palate collapsing together against the back of the throat, or the brain simply fails to signal the muscles to breathe. Complex sleep apnea is a combination of both situations. With each blockage event, the brain has to arouse the sleeper to signal him to resume breathing. With severe sleep apnea, this can happen hundreds of times each night. It’s often most common

sleep

during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, considered the most restorative part of the sleep cycle. “Many people with sleep apnea perceive themselves as sleeping beautifully,” said neurologist and sleep specialist Baten. “But they’re snoring and disturbing their bed partners.” Lorene Mills, producer of the weekly television show “Report from Santa Fe,” never thought she was having a sleep problem. She prided herself on being able to sleep anywhere. “I lay down, go to sleep, and four hours later I’m ready. The alarm goes off and I have to be somewhere. I’ve been doing that for about 10 years.” So when she found herself feeling really tired, she suspected various health problems but nothing pertaining directly to sleep. “I went to an endocrinologist who tested me for everything, and finally she said, ‘That leaves only one thing — sleep apnea,’” Mills said. After a sleep study, meaning a night at a sleep clinic with electrodes attached to her head and chest measuring brain wave activity, eye movements, muscle contractions, heart activity, breathing and blood oxygenation, it was determined that Mills had sleep apnea. The next step was to be fitted for a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, a portable unit that transmits mild air pressure, via a face mask, to keep the throat airway open. Mills said the CPAP machine definitely helps her, but she forgets to use it as consistently as she should. Baten said, “Even if you miss a few nights, partial usage is better than no usage.” On an October evening, Mills was one of a dozen people attending Southwestern Sleepers, a free meeting and lecture series addressing sleep apnea, snoring, CPAP machines and insomnia, held at the Santa Fe Community College. The evenings are sponsored by the Southwestern Sleep Center, part of Southwestern Ear, Nose & Throat. “The price I pay for not getting enough sleep is [not] dreaming,” said Mills. “I’m not in deep enough sleep to dream. Also, one of the markers of longevity is, ‘Do you get enough sleep?’” To find out more information about Southwestern Sleepers, call 505-438-3101 or write pat.donahue@swentnm.com. An apple a day may no longer be enough. If you really want to keep the doctor away, you may need to make that apple organic...

24

Health & Wellness

By Patricia West-Barker While researchers continue to debate whether or not organic foods are more nutritional than conventionally grown fruits and vegetables, all agree that choosing organic can help shoppers reduce their exposure to potentially hazardous pesticides — something that’s especially important for pregnant women and young children. U.S. Department of Agriculture data show that the foods we eat and the water we drink expose Americans to at least 10 pesticides every day — and that every person tested has had pesticides stored in his or her body fat. While many families can’t afford to switch to a totally organic diet, avoiding pesticides doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. Some fruits and veggies carry more varieties or higher loads of pesticides, and some pesticides are more toxic than others. For the past nine years, the nonprofit watchdog organization Environmental Working Group has put out two lists to make it easier for consumers to tell which conventionally grown fruits and veggies are the safest and which could be the most hazardous to health.

Highlights of the 2013 Dirty Dozen • The most contaminated fruits are apples, strawberries, grapes, peaches, imported nectarines and domestic blueberries. • The most contaminated vegetables are celery, spinach, bell peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, cherry tomatoes and hot peppers. • 99 percent of the apple samples tested positive for at least one pesticide. A single sweet bell pepper tested positive for 15 pesticides.

Highlights of the 2013 Clean Fifteen • The least contaminated fruits are pineapples, papayas, mangoes, kiwi, grapefruit and cantaloupe.

• The least contaminated vegetables are sweet corn, onions,

avocados, cabbage, sweet peas (frozen), asparagus, eggplant, sweet potatoes and mushrooms. • Of the Clean Fifteen fruits, no single fruit had more than four types of pesticides detected. • Multiple pesticide residues are extremely rare on Clean Fifteen vegetables.

Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce The Dirty Dozen Plus

These are the fruits and veggies highest in pesticide residues and the ones most worth buying organic. The closer to the top of the list an item appears, the more pesticides it contains. The “Plus” category is for produce that doesn’t meet the usual criteria for inclusion but that was commonly contaminated with insecticides that are highly toxic to the nervous system.

Apples Strawberries Grapes Celery Peaches Spinach Sweet bell peppers Nectarines (imported) Cucumbers Potatoes Cherry tomatoes Hot peppers Plus Kale and collard greens Summer squash & zucchini

The Clean Fifteen

These are the items lowest in pesticide residue (shown from least to most); no need to buy organic if you don’t want to.
