The Early Years

Edson was born of the railway, during the height of transcontinental rail construction pushing for the Yellowhead Pass heading toward British Columbia. Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP) was ferrying hundreds of workers west and initially, it looked as if Wolf Creek would be the established divisional point. However, Wolf Creek soon became victim to real estate speculators and the GTP refused to pay the overinflated prices so they moved the divisional point eight miles west, to the home of modern day Edson. Edson received its first passenger train on August 10,1910 and by 1911, the people of Edson placed a request to the Post Master General to have the post office renamed from Heatherwood; a name it had carried for about a year, to Edson in honour of Edson J. Chamberlain, the then general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Rail. On September 21, 1911, Edson was officially incorporated as a town and by 1912, the population had nearly tripled to a staggering 1,233 people and 32 local businesses. It was this population and business increase that inspired the town to create the Board of Trade. Edson was quickly promoted in every way possible including brochures that read ‘Boosting Edson is like making love to a widow, it can’t be overdone.’ Main Street was directly opposite the railway station on a clean level cut that had been made through the mud and water. Committees began to form and Edson continued to maintain a steady growth right up until the First World War. For all its prosperity, however, Edson also became a hotbed for unlawful activities that followed many frontier towns. In the spring of 1913, a fire claimed the wholesale liquor store building and another fire consumed the Old Edson Hall. It was a night of destruction that would prompt the hiring of the Royal North West Mounted Police to patrol the streets and bring order back to the community. With law and order in place, families came to settle the area, encouraged that they would be safe and protected from the lawless acts following the rail construction. Now the town focused on building solid roads to create greater access to their community. Edson had been established in the heart of muskeg and country pillars of wooden kegs filled with stones were used to create a solid foundation for walkways. By 1920, the town had power, water, sewer systems and a telephone switch board in place. Soon, there was a dentist, long distance service and improvements made to the postal service, along with better roadways in and out of Edson. Born out of the railroad industry, these economic foundations stayed strong throughout Edson’s history and were augmented by the forestry industry, trap lines, and the small businesses that continued to flourish in Edson.

It was an exciting time in Edson’s history and created the foundation for the vibrant community that exists today.

Sidewalk Jamboree Summer Festival

The Edson and District Chamber of Commerce hosts the Sidewalk Jamboree beginning Thursday, August 16th, and lasting all day on Friday, the 17th and Saturday the 18th until 5 pm. Edson’s Main Street transforms into a fair which spans five town blocks and includes carnival games and rides, the always popular mini donuts, cotton candy and more. Local businesses and volunteer organizations also set up food booths which feature elephant ears, burgers, and a host of other tasty treats. With Edson’s Main St. closed to traffic, many local businesses set up outdoor booths that offer fabulous deals just before the start of the school year. Face painting, a new Soap Box Derby event and mini draw are more highlights of this year’s Jamboree, as well as a sound stage featuring local musical talent. New events are added yearly to the Jamboree and in the past events like pie eating, watermelon eating and fear factor challenge were popular with the crowds. Photograph by Madison Sharman

The Red Brick School

Serving Edson and area since 1913

2013 is the Red Brick Arts Centre and Museum’s centennial year! Join the festivities on August 30th, 31st and September 1st as the Edson Cultural Heritage Organization throws a birthday celebration like you’ve never seen! Hundreds of past students and teachers of the ‘sturdy’ Red Brick will be invited back to reminisce about days gone by and reunite with old friends. Up until 1913, the five cottage schools that were located throughout Edson were the only classroom settings in which to learn. It was time to develop a new school that would house all the children under one roof. The town of Edson took out a $60,000 loan from the Bank of Chicago to pay for Alberta’s most modern school — The Red Brick. The Red Brick continued to be a school until 1967, when it closed down to become a maintenance shed and bus barn for the school division. When a new facility was opened in the ‘80’s, the future of the Red Brick was uncertain.

Red Brick 100th Birthday Celebration August 30th, to September 1st.

A campaign to save the building started in 1985 and succeeded when the building was designated a municipal historical resource in 1987. On Saturday, August 31st, the public is invited to be a part of history as the time capsule placed within the bricks of the building will be removed. Placed in the cornerstone of the Red Brick in 1913, the time capsule was to represent the hope is Edson’s future. 100 years later, the Red Brick has become the town’s cultural cornerstone, complete with an art gallery, 141 seat theatre, dance studios, permanent art collection and a classroom museum. As one of Edson’s oldest buildings, it’s a definite must see. 2013

The Slo-Pitch Capital of Canada

The population of Edson swells as ball players from all over North America head for the heart of the Yellowhead. Billed as the world’s greatest slo-pitch tournament, Edson Kin Slo-Pitch is celebrating its 34th year this August long weekend. Vision Park boasts 24 regulation-sized diamonds and hosts 272 mixed open division teams during this one-of-a-kind tournament, with cash and prizes totalling more than $60,000. Entertainment is held each night in the on-site beer gardens known as The Hanger. Performances this year include: Battle of the Bands (Friday), ‘The Hip Show’ Tragically Hip Tribute Band (Saturday) and Finger Eleven (Sunday). Camping is available inside Vision Park at Kin Kampers Village, at the Rotary Campground across the road and there are several campgrounds and hotels/ motels in the area to give you a place to lay your head. Remember, book early as this is a very popular tournament! This great ball weekend includes the always entertaining home run derbies (the ladies competition is held on Saturday and the mens on Sunday), local on-site vendors, bussing to and from Edson and a Masters division for 40+ males and 35+ females with all skill levels represented. Players must be at least 18 years of age to register for the tournament. All proceeds raised through this event are used by the nonprofit organization, Kinsmen Club of Edson, to help support a variety of community programs, events and charities. A Local Favourite for Over 38 Years! Mountain Pizza & Steakhouse first opened its doors on February 15, 1975. At that time, the restaurant consisted of 60 dining room seats and a take-out counter, running with a staff of only eight people. Doing everything from cleaning, cooking, serving and everything else in between, the Kazoleas family exerted their efforts to create a reputable, well-known and loved eating establishment.

Driving on Yellowhead West, local traffic and tourists know Mountain Pizza & Steakhouse for its unique architectural design. Its peaks and valleys represent the shape of the beautiful mountains in our area.

5102-4th Avenue, Edson, Alberta www.mountainpizza.ca

In 1989 Emmanuouil Kazoleas expanded the popular restaurant by adding an extra 90 seats and a new kitchen. Around the same time his middle son, James, entered the business and became partners with his dad. Mountain Pizza & Steakhouse to this day continues to be a family run business.

18

Mountain Pizza has been in business now for 38 years running with a staff of more than thirty people. Its continued success can be attributed to the high quality and consistency of the food as well as the top notch service standards - trying hard to make all guests feel welcome and appreciated.

We would like to thank Edson & the surrounding area for your loyalty over the years. Without you, we wouldn’t be where we are today!

Rodeos

33rd Annual Medicine Lodge Rodeo May 10, 11 & 12, 2013

This home grown event is a staple in the community with events ranging from ladies barrel racing to saddle bronc. The three days each have their own specific events. On Friday, you can enjoy the ‘All Girls Rodeo’ with pole bending, steer undecorating, cow riding and many more crowd favourites. This rodeo is also a great supporter of the next generation of cowboys and cowgirls — hosting junior barrel racing, stick horse racing, wild cow milking, miniature horse racing and other very exciting events. So sit back and enjoy the home grown country flair of the 33rd Annual Medicine Lodge Rodeo.

Wildwood Bronc Bustin’ 10th Anniversary May 31 - June 2, 2013

Wildwood Bronc Bustin is the only rodeo of its kind in Canada. It’s founder Rod Hay, who is an eight time Canadian champ and 20 time NFR qualifier has brought together Canadian champions and World champions, from the USA and Australia. As a Canadian Professional Rodeo Association event, all the prize money counts toward the Canadian Finals Rodeo. It’s a saddle bronc event only, with 20 professional cowboys riding for $18,000 and with new bronc horses competing for $5,000 in prize money. Don’t forget about the popular wild pony race, mutton bustin’ and steer riding. Two-time Canadian Pro-Rodeo Announcer of the year Brett Gardiner and legendary Rodeo Announcer Bob Tallman, from Weatherford, Texas will both be announcing at Wildwood Bronc Bustin’! Bring your boots, hats and trailers and plan to have a weekend of fun and excitement. 28

Willmore Park

You’ll find a piece of a different world at Willmore Park. As one of Edson’s best kept secrets, Willmore Park will certainly impress. Located right along the McLeod River, the park offers something for everyone. Hiking and biking trails, ranging from 1.5 km to 5 km provide varying degrees of difficulty and are surrounded by the beauty of the wilderness and scenic views of the river valley. There is plenty of room to camp in one of the 12 river side sites or 29 forest sites. Group camping and picnicking is also available. The area is a great fishing destination and has a boat launch for the McLeod River. The park is used for tobogganing, snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter months and in the summer, it is a popular spot for swimming, soaking up the sun or tubing on the river. Willmore Park is a definite must see with its calm, small town charm with grand views and amazing adventures.

Unique Sites

Coal Branch

The Coal Branch Railway was one of the first railways in Western Canada. The railway was a link from Bickerdike (seven miles west of Edson) to the coal mining towns of the Rockies. This area is known for quadding, hiking and its rugged untouched beauty. Visiting these sites will give you a great insight into the Coal Branch and a wonderful connection to the area’s railroading past.

Mountain Park

Mountain Park used to be a thriving mining village of more than 1,000 people but now is a ghost town. All that remains of the town are faint traces of buildings and a the highest cemetery in the British Commonwealth that is taken care of by previous residents of the town.

Cardinal Divide

The Cardinal Divide is an elevation of land that separates the Arctic Drainage from drainage to Hudson’s Bay. The Cardinal Divide is a day use area with hiking trails that showcase much of the unique wildlife and wildflowers in the area, providing for a truly pleasurable alpine view.

Rosevear Ferry

The Rosevear Ferry has been in operation for over seventy years and is one of only seven ferries remaining in Alberta today. To access the ferry go north off Highway 16 on Range Road 154, also known as the Rosevear Road.

Brule Sand Dunes

These three story sand dunes are fun places to hike, bike or quad. In the 1900’s the Grand Trunk Pacific railway ran across the dunes hoping to connect the Rockies to Edmonton. Drifting sand over the tracks caused this section of the railway to be shut down and remains of some of the tracks are still visible today.

Ogre Canyon

The canyon and the sinkholes within it were carved out by streams and underground water. The climb to the top is a difficult one, rising up almost 900 metres along switchbacks. Four wheel drive is recommended on the gravel road to get to the parking lot.

Cadomin Caves

Cadomin Caves have been closed to lessen the risk of the White-Nose Syndrome spreading to bats in Alberta as it has been deemed the most at risk cave in Alberta. It is one of only three known bat hibernacula in Alberta. The fungus is not harmful to humans, but is spread by humans when they explore caves. 36 36

Hiking in the Coal Branch

Cardinal Divide There are spectacular views due to the high elevation and for the more adventurous in your group, this makes an excellent scramble to the top of the mountain. Length: a few km of clear trail but can be extended. Ruby Creek Popular with hikers and quadders alike, this trail takes you along Ruby Creek eventually arriving at small lakes and a waterfall. Length: 12.5 km Fiddle Pass If you are interested in backcountry hiking, this one is for you. It generally takes three days to complete and you can end with a soak in Miette Hot Springs; where the trail ends. While the destination is within Jasper National Park, it begins outside the park at Whitehorse Creek Recreation Area. Length: 37 km Bighorn River There are a variety of hiking trails that begin at the Cresent Falls Recreation Area ranging from an easy short hike along a canyon to a gorgeous waterfall to full day hikes that lead through meadows, across creeks and up to alpine lakes. Longer multi day hikes are also a feature in that area and due to the flat terrain, they also make excellent horseback riding trails.

Parks

Sundance Provincial Park Sundance Provincial Park is comprised of three very different and unique features only found within the park’s boundaries. It was declared a park under the Special Places Program. Emerson Lakes is a grouping of 5 beautifully clear lakes nestled in a quiet oasis. Seven km of hiking trails circle three of the lakes and offer amazing scenic views. The lakes provide excellent fishing for brook trout and a range of other fish. Marl Bog is a provincially significant site for flora. Twelve different species of orchids, as well as 5 different species of carnivorous plants can be found here along with a variety of rare aquatic plants, sedges, rushes and ferns. This area has a unique combination of soil and hydrology which provide for such an unusual grouping of plants.

Wild Sculpture Trail

This trail takes a journey through the ever changing hoodoos of Sundance Park. The sandstone cliffs, which were and are carved by rain and wind, hang on the side of steep cliffs overlooking the lakes below. The trail is about 9 km in length one way and provides camping spots for overnight adventures within the park.

Sundance Provincial Park is 49 km Northwest of Edson. It is accessible via Hwy 16 to Swanson Rd. or via the North Road. Both routes meet up with Emerson Road.

Parks

Obed Lake Provincial Park Obed Lake Provincial Park encompasses 3 small lakes and the upland areas around them. The area contains a diverse mix of wetland and well drained upland communities including black spruce, tamarack, ferns, mixed wood forests, and closed conifer forests of lodgepole pine and black spruce. The area is important for wildlife as well, especially for elk and as an over wintering area for moose.

Bear Lake Park

Bear Lake Park remains one of the area’s most popular lakes. The sandy beach, clean water, and playground are a draw for the younger members of the family while the boat launch and docking areas play host to the more adventuresome water enthusiasts for water skiing and tubing.

Shining Bank

Shining Bank offers a wide variety of family camping activities within a quiet aspen grove. A roped off swimming area, playground facilities, a sandy beach and excellent boat launching and docking facilities give great access and use to the area’s largest lake. 2013

Industry

Coal Mining has been a key player in the Edson area for many years, but when oil became the fuel of choice, coal mining started to decline. Mines gradually shut down in the 1950s and the industry slowed dramatically until the late 1970s when coal became a viable product again. Oil & Gas Since Edson is located on one of the largest gas fields in Alberta, there are always employment opportunities in this field. Exploration, drilling, collection, transportation and servicing of the oil and gas industry continues to be a driving force and major contributor to Edson’s economic prosperity. There are many plants and pumping stations scattered throughout the region. Forestry In 1983, an OSB manufacturing plant opened in the Edson area — Pelican Spruce Mills (now Weyerhaeuser). Employing more than 160 people, Weyerhaeuser uses the abundant supply of Aspen and Black Poplar to manufacture structural panels used for flooring and sheltering in residential home construction throughout North America. In the early 1990’s Sundance Forest Industries (formerly Erith Tie Company) built a new state-of-the-art sawmill and in the mid 1990’s they expanded their operations to include SunPlus, a specialty wood product manufacturing facility which ships to overseas markets.
