Healthy Communication

This course is designed for tourists. Learn to make introductions, ask and follow directions, order food and drinks in restaurants, find hotel accommodation, get emergency medical help, change money, shop confidently and do it all politely! The students will learn just enough grammar to help facilitate future learning. (24 hours)

Communication is basis to any relationship we encounter. The way we conduct ourselves also has an impact on our relationships. Healthy Communication is about how we say something, not just what we say. Problems occur when we expect others to act in a certain way. If they do not, then communication breaks down and relationships become conflicted. Being aware of our tone, body language and demeanor can make a big difference in how a relationship develops and in how we deal with conflict. This session will focus on awareness and coping strategies to enable better communication.

r e d n e r Ap l o ñ a p es Seniors Resiliency One thing that we are assured of in life is that we are all going to get older. The fact is that as we get older, we experience more setbacks and changes that may be difficult to endure. However, there are ways in which we can bounce back and see these life changes as a challenge rather than a setback. We are going to discuss ways in which everyone can overcome life’s aging obstacles and enjoy their senior years. Dates: Time: Cost: Location: Instructor:

Dealing with Life’s Inevitable Changes Dealing with change in our lives can sometimes be difficult. It is one thing to make a decision to change when we are prepared for it, but change often happens when we least expect it or when we have no control over it. If we are more aware of what happens when change is occuring then we are more likely to look at change differently. We will dicuss stages of change, common thoughts and feelings around change and how we can challenge perceptions of change. Date: Time: Cost: Location:

Family Literacy and Dads Father s and male caregiver literacy activities tend to be active or play based. When telling a story they often act it out and or improvise rather then read it word for word. This is a wonderful way to informally model literacy. Recently a dad shared his experience in creating a fort with his children using a large cardboard box. A grandfather told us how he spent a fun afternoon building, decorating and flying paper airplanes through the house with his grandsons. Both admitted that they never even thought about the literacy they were modeling they were just having fun . Some of the literacy skills that were used in both activities: • Counting, choosing colors to decorate and writing on the fort and the airplanes. • Teamwork, patience with younger siblings, safety and sharing are all great examples of life skills learning. Use your imagination and think of various ways that you as a male caregiver already use literacy when you play with your children. We welcome your ideas and stories. If you would like to share, please email:edsonlit@gyrd.ab.ca For more information call Trisha @ 780 -723-3630

At this age, we also use classical music and nursery rhymes to assist in the development and understanding of the rhythm of language and music. Simple jazz, ballet, and hip hop moves will be explored. Students are given the opportunity to have small speaking roles in the year end recital. • Tapsical (ages 6+) is a term coined by Mrs. Pede, and is a combination of Tap and Musical Theatre. Classes follow the Al Gilbert Tap Syllabus Training Program and will focus on technique, rhythm, and performance skills. Basic steps will build the formation to create combos and routines. Simple acting, voice, and singing techniques will be incorporated into the classes and demonstrated in our year end recital. • Hip Hop (ages 8+) develops muscle strength and improves coordination. High energy is required for this aerobic workout that involves many different hip hop styles including breaking, locking, and body popping to stylized rhythmic music. Students will be given the opportunity to explore their own personal hip hop dance style through improvisation and interpretation. • Adult Tap – Beginner Level Great for the mind and the body. Tap dancing builds strength in your legs and feet as well as increases flexibility in knees, ankles, and hips. Your brain will get a great workout too, as you develop your muscle and mental memory together. This class will introduce you to basic tap steps and combinations. (12 week sessions) • Preschool ballet and tap combo (ages 4-6) Classes introduce our young dancers to the joy of rhythm, movement, song, coordination and concentration.
