Dear Friend of St. Francis de Sales School,

Let me begin by expressing my appreciation to the many benefactors and volunteers who generously gave their time, energy, and financial resources to advance the mission of St. Francis and support the outstanding work of our school. It is through your partnership and generosity that we have been able to accomplish so much. The 2018-2019 fiscal year was a busy and exciting year from beginning to end as we continued to be a resource for the Northwest Ohio Community and they remained one for us.

This year I am pleased to announce the completion of the first phase of the Center for Advanced Scientific Exploration (CASE), The ProMedica Human Performance Lab. This state of the art facility is like no other in the area as it allows our instructors to remove the levels of abstraction and create hands-on experiences which will allow instruction to come alive. As an example of the power of collaboration and partnership with CASE, St. Francis is grateful to be collaborating with Dr. Sean Carroll `77, an internationally-recognized evolutionary biologist at the renowned Howard Hughes Medical Institute as well as Dr. Frank Pizza `82, a professor in the School of Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Toledo. SFS will continue to partner with STEM-related professionals and businesses to enhance the real-life learning experiences that prepare young men for life beyond St. Francis.

This past year, through our Salesian Leadership Initiative, we expanded our attendance at the Second Annual Global Salesian Leadership Symposium. Students from schools throughout Northwest Ohio as well as adult attendees from as far away as California and New York joined the Knights of St. Francis to hear world thought leaders from around the country share their professional experiences steeped in Salesian values. The Salesian Leadership Initiative significantly enhances our ability to help build leadership skills rooted in the values of St. Francis de Sales. The lessons from the leaders at the GSLS allow our young

Knights to thrive and make a positive difference in a complex and rapidly changing world.

Enrollment at St. Francis continues to grow. Last year we had 679 Knights making a difference inside and out of the classroom which is over 8% increase from last year. I attribute this increase to many factors; the myPREP curriculum style which immediately puts young men on an academic track that is individually tailored to their needs, along with the “relationship model” used by Fr. Joe Newman, OSFS and our Admissions Office which works individually with prospective students and their parents. Finally, I believe students and parents also choose St. Francis because of the presence of the six Oblates as well as the incredible faculty and staff. The talent, knowledge, and energy they provide every day continually inspires our students to, “Be who they are and be that well”.

The student leaders have, again, chosen a Salesian quote to be a theme for the school year, “Do not be discouraged by your own imperfections but rise up with fresh courage.” The short form is, “Rise Up.” At St. Francis de Sales School, we continue to strive to Rise Up and lead the way both inside and out of the classroom by providing transformational changes for our Knights. Thank you, again, for your continued support of St. Francis de Sales School. It is because of your generosity in keeping St. Francis de Sales School a philanthropic priority that we are able to continue to further our mission, provide these life-changing experiences, and graduate young men to be the leaders of tomorrow in the tradition of our Patron Saint, Francis de Sales.

Letter from Foundation Chairman

Dear Friend of St. Francis de Sales School:

Every day as I walk the halls of St. Francis and teach my Senior Seminar in Theology class, I am keenly aware of the relatively short life history of our students and what must seem like ancient history to them, the beginnings of St. Francis de Sales School. Ours is an educational institution, a family, a brotherhood, a tradition, a mission now spanning sixty-four years. Our deepest desires are that the same institution, family, brotherhood, tradition, and mission will be thriving, and relevant sixtyfour years from now.

That is why the St. Francis de Sales Foundation is so important! While serving the present, the vision of the Foundation is the long term viability, excellence, and relevance of our school. The very nature of a Foundation is to be an endowment, a corpus of funds making annual distributions to the school in perpetuity.

In 1955 when St. Francis first opened its doors to students, there was no endowment. Thirty years later there was a modest endowment of less than half of a million dollars. In the mid-1980’s, though, fewer than fifty students were receiving scholarships or tuition assistance; today more than two-thirds of our students receive scholarships or tuition assistance. That trend is neither decreasing nor remaining constant; it is increasing.

An endowment preserves and invests a gift as a corpus, and, from that corpus, annual distributions are made in accord with donors’ intentions. Through the generosity of benefactors, our Foundation has grown to just over $14 million. Thanks to that growth we are now able to distribute more than $600,000 to the school annually. Ever increasing distributions will be made as the Foundation grows. It is these distributions that will ensure

St. Francis de Sales’ existence as a school of excellence for generations to come, for more that sixty-four more years.

Currently there are 144 named funds in our Foundation, most of them restricted through donor agreements for scholarships and tuition assistance, and some for academic or extracurricular programs. In addition, ninety-seven benefactors have named the Foundation in their estate plans.

The future is full of hope for the St. Francis de Sales High School Foundation. That ensures a future full of hope for St. Francis de Sales School.

· St. Francis offers 22 Advanced Placement Classes

· 22 Students were inducted into the National Honor Society

· 5 Commended Students in the 2019 National Merit Program who placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students that took the PSAT

· 411 students weekly spend a total of 750 hours in the Student Achievement Center mentoring, tutoring, studying, and doing homework

SPIRITUAL

· Over 70 new students and their families participated in the Back to School Family Mass and Breakfast

· 25 Knights were commissioned as Eucharistic Ministers

· 20 Masses Celebrated This Year: 11 All School Masses, 3 Family Masses, 2 Alumni Masses, 2 Penance Services, 1 Junior Ring Mass, 1 Baccalaureate Mass

· 100 Students attended 4 Prayer Services followed by Dinner

· 100% of the Knights complete at least 1 Retreat each Year

· Over 60 Knights went on Service Trips to help improve the communities of Lincoln County, West Virginia, Camden, N. J., Philadelphia, P.A., and Jamaica

· Over 14,700 Hours of Community Service were performed by the Knights during the 2018-2019 School Year

· Knights performed community service at over 65 community organizations including The Ability Center, Great Lakes Autism Collaborative, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, and Lucas County Children Services

· Several hundred new books were collected by the Knights for the Advent Tree and delivered to Gesu School for each of their students. Extra books were given to their classrooms

· The SFS Football team raised over $2,000 and collected various food articles needed after a crisis at Mom’s House

· SFS Teen PEP presented their message to over 300 students: Changing the culture one student at a time

· Over 90% of our students are involved in the Fine Arts or 1 of the 24 Clubs

· 91 Students Made Up the Cast and Crew that delighted the audience as they danced their way down “42nd Street”

· Over 400 students and their dates danced away at the Fresh Knights of Bancroft Homecoming Dance and Knight at the Movies for Prom

· 7th and 8th grade Quiz Bowl team finished 2nd after a double overtime match

· 7th & 8th Students performed their second annual musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”

· St. Francis Interact Club joined with Partners for Clean Streams to clean a stretch of the 10 Mile Creek. They partnered with Toledo Rotary to keep Lake Erie clean

· Over 250 Students showcased their creativity in all disciplines of the Arts at the Annual Knight Fest

· 3,800+ pounds of food was donated by SFS to the Seagate Food Bank during the “Pack a Pickup” Challenge

Contributions Report 2018- 2019

Philanthropy and service are important components of the culture and tradition at St. Francis de Sales School. Donors can make an impact at every level in accordance with their philanthropic wishes and priorities. In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, thanks to the benevolence of our supportive and loyal benefactors, our total gifts yielded approximately $5.4 million. Through our donors continuous generosity to the Annual Fund, strategic initiatives, events, and Foundation, St. Francis is able to provide a transformative experience for young men as they become the leaders of tomorrow in the tradition of our Patron Saint, Francis de Sales.

Gifts to the Annual Fund are used to enrich the daily operations that continue to make St. Francis de Sales a School of destination for so many young men. Gifts of all amounts to the Annual Fund ensure that St. Francis remains strong in its mission while it continues to provide various educational experiences. Through the Annual Fund, donors may designate their gift to their area of interest. In 2018-2019, funds totaling approximately $2.5 million were provided for scholarships and tuition support. The Annual Fund not only is an essential portion of the St. Francis operational budget, it also helps empower the Knight Family, the Community, and the Brotherhood that has become synonymous with St. Francis. Gifts to the strategic initiatives broaden and strengthen the mission of St. Francis de Sales School. This year, our Strategic Initiative fundraising efforts focused on CASE – the Center for Advanced Scientific Exploration. We are happy to report the success of these efforts has resulted in the 2019 Fall opening of the ProMedica Human Performance Lab

which is Phase 1 of CASE. This innovative center provides students access to state of the art technology and equipment that is found primarily in select universities. Our students will be able to collect and study scientific data to aid in developing healthy lifestyles and master a deeper understanding of the human physiology. Other strategic initiatives that were the beneficiaries of our donors’ generosity were myPREP, Salesian Leadership and in keeping St. Francis affordable. MyPREP is our educational model which provides individualized approach to education, where students can explore areas of interest and go deeper into their passions. Gifts directed toward the strategic initiatives will be utilized over a specific period of years.

Gifts to the St. Francis Foundation assure that the distinctive Knight education is preserved for years to come. A healthy endowment relieves dependence on raising significant annual operating support. Gifts to the Foundation may be used for unrestricted support or may be used to establish a named fund to provide support for a specific purpose which is directed by the donor. Generally, four to five percent of the assets within the foundation’s value is spent annually to help provide financial support for the school. Memorial, Estate, and Deferred Gifts are ordinarily directed to the Foundation to ensure that all young men have the opportunity to attend St. Francis and not be hindered by financial limitations.

St. Francis has been a part of our family for 4 decades, ever since Jeff started his Freshman year in 1979! Since then, we have had 4 boys attend SFS, a daughter in the homecoming court, a Chappius Society president, a Brisson member, and countless sporting events, musicals, and Fun-a-Ramas. Through St. Francis we have forged new friendships and strengthened old ones. It was, and still is, our second family and home away from home. St Francis de Sales Foundation Endowed Funds

A strong endowment provides long-term financial health to the School. Gifts to the St. Francis Endowment Fund are invested by the School and the income generated from the gifts is directed towards a purpose selected by a donor. Following the School’s spending rule, only the income from the principal of the gift is expended so to ensure SFS remains the School of destination against changing economic climates.

Endowed funds provide ongoing support for a variety of institutional needs. A large percentage of the Endowed Funds help provide tuition assistance for many of the young men at St. Francis. For gift commitments in the amount of $25,000 or more, a named scholarship/fund may be established. Due to the generosity of the benefactors, the SFS Foundation Assets have continued to grow over the 2018-2019 fiscal year. The chart below depicts both

the Foundation Assets as well as the Foundation Distributions. Distributions are based on 4% to 5% of each fund’s market value. In 2018, the Foundation Board agreed on a 4% distribution to preserve the purchase of power of the fund. The Fund distribution each year will remain between 4% to 5% as agreed upon annually by the St. Francis Foundation Board.

On the following pages are the named Endowed Funds which are generally directed to be used for specific purposes or to honor certain loved ones. There are also unrestricted assets in the Foundation which may be used to support other unrestricted needs of the school. The goal of the Foundation remains to realize assets of $20,000,000 so that no young man is ever denied a St. Francis education due to financial constraints.

Oblate History

The Oblate Fathers were founded in 1876 by Father Louis Brisson at the encouragement of Sister Mary de Sales Chappuis. While the Oblate roots stem from France, the religious order migrated to Holland, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in the late 1800s. It was in 1893 when the Oblates first settled in the United States, first in New York and later in Wilmington, Delaware. It was here that the first permanent Oblate community and school were established. Toledo became home to the Oblates in 1943 when seven Oblates accepted faculty positions at Central Catholic High School.

Central was over-crowded and Bishop George Rehring was interested in providing an all-boy high school for the community. (There were already two all-girl high school options available.) He asked the Oblates if they would be willing to take on this

challenge. The Oblates agreed to build, maintain, and staff the school. St. Francis de Sales High School opened its doors to 290 freshman and sophomore students on September 14, 1955.

The Oblate Tradition remains strong today at St. Francis de Sales. During the 20182019 School Year, there were six Oblate Priests on the Faculty/Staff and 2 Oblate Postulants. St. Francis is the only Catholic school in Northwest Ohio with such a strong religious presence, not only in the school but in the community, keeping the teachings and traditions of our patron Saint, Francis de Sales strong. We continue the tradition of helping to raise young men to “Be who they are and be that well.”
