Six Book Design

Project Summery The goal was to typeset and design specific stories extracted from James Joyce’s novel, Dubliners. The novel itself is made up of 15 short stories depicting the lives of those living in Dublin, Ireland in the early 1900s. The stories being utilized in this project will portray narratives of love, growth, decay, good, and evil. These contrasting elements all make up the continuing dichotomy of life and death seen throughout all stories featured in this project.

inspiration

The themes of life and death both repeat throughout James Joyce’s stories. Six was designed to take advantage of that juxtaposition in text and manifest it into an experience. Cinematic image layout showcases the tension of such deep-seated themes.

Los Gallos Restaurant Branding

Project Summery The goal was to rebrand Taqueria Los Gallos located in Newark, California. Los Gallos is a dive restaurant that serves authentic Mexican food. This rebrand will give the establishment a whole new graphic identity. The current graphic characteristics are lacking consistency, so new treatment to the restaurants identity will be helpful for the business.

Programs InDesign Illustrator Photoshop

inspiration

The rooster as an icon is important in Mexican culture. Roosters symbolize honor, courage, good luck, patience, and trust. All attributes that Los Gallos is proud uphold. The shapes used for the rooster were inspired by the flower patterns of traditional Oaxacan, Mexico black clay pottery.

Como Va Magazine

Project Summery The goal of this project was to create a magazine based on any subject. The subject chosen was Latin Jazz. Because it is a niche topic, catering to a larger age demographic was important. An eclectic style was chosen while staying modern and keeping a clean layout to support legibility.

Programs InDesign Illustrator Photoshop

Mission & More Typeface

Project Summery The goal of this project was to create a typeface that was based on a neighborhood. The neighborhood chosen was the Mission San Jose area in Fremont, California. It is a quiet area mostly consisting of shops and schools. A main attraction is the Mission San Jose. One of the most notable features about this area is the mixture of elements. The style of the area as a whole is very eclectic, which became a significant project driver.

inspiration

Mission and More was inspired by the architecture and graphic elements found in the neighborhood of the Mission San JosĂŠ District in Fremont, CA. It is a hodgepodge of the very old and the very new. Bright sans serifs are used on buildings that date back to the 1940s. The extreme contrast of the dated and contemporary give a feeling of tackiness. This is what drove the design to be playful and fun.

Chasing Amy Web and Mobile Site

Project Summery The goal was to create a website based on a movie. The film Chasing Amy is a quirky, fun and intelligent movie about love and relationships seen through the eyes of two comic book creators. The design was created to revamp the existing website and cater to the feel of the movie.

Programs Illustrator Photoshop

To fit the tone and theme of the movie, my inspirations came from cartoons and comic book styles. Speech bubbles and rectangular panels are both elements that were strategically placed in the design to create a comic book look and feel.

Brita Faucet Filtration System

Soma Sustainable Water Filters

Brita is one of the most popular water filtration systems. Heinz Hankammer named his company after his daughter, in 1966, since then they’ve been in the industry for 50 years. They have a large range of products from pitchers, water bottles, and dispensers.

Soma is the first water filter company to create a system that is environmentally conscious throughout their products. The casing of their filters are made of biodegradable plant based materials, their filtration uses coconut shell carbon and silk. These filters are biodegradable and only compostable in compost facilities.

Pur Faucet Filter

Brita Pressurized System

Pur is the first ‘One Click’ facet filter, easy installation makes it a great marketing point. It also claims to filter out more contaminates in tap water than its competitors.

This product is only available in other countries. The installation process is a bit more involved, but provides the sink with a lot cleaner look. The filter is very customizable; the water gets filtered depending on the user’s specific needs. This is made of plastic including the filter that needs to be replaced about every two months.

ethnographic research

Fly on the Wall

During the lunch hour, I spend two hours observing customers and their drinking water habits and preferences. From Noon to 2PM, I surveyed 79 people. The crowd was made up of mostly families, groups of friends, and parties of one. Out of the 79 people observed 30% chose filtered water 18% chose the tap water 13% bought a bottle of water 29% bought either juice, coffee, tea, or soda

68

elena cornejo

During the dinner hour I spent four hours observing. I noticed that there seemed to be a lot less people. Differing from the lunch hours that had a more constant crowd, the dinner hour had less people lingering and more people leaving right after their meal, leaving the area less crowded. I also noticed that there were far more couples and adults taking advantage of the bar. Out of the 76 people I observed, 1% chose tap water 39% filtered water 1% bought a water bottle 1% brought along their personal water bottle 39%, purchased either liquor, tea or coffee, soda or juice

“The consumer reaction of being skeptical of their water is justified and everyone should question their water.”

“Consumers are wasting hundreds if not thousands of dollars per year on drinking bottled water when their tap water is potable and safe for consumption.”

“Aesthetics (taste/odor/smell) play a big role in how consumers perceive the safety of their tap water. Also, (mis) conceptions on the safety of tap water often influence American consumers to buy bottled water or sugar-sweetened beverages as alternatives.” PhD Student in Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech
