Dubliners Student project Spring 2015 Create an original book design of a selection of James Joyce’s Dubliners, including a cover design.
6
Dubliners
abstract In this adaption of James Joyce’s Dubliners, my goal as a designer was to carry a design theme that gives these already rich stories a visual personality that reflects that hardships and emotions felt by the characters’ for we follow. The images and design elements help aid Joyce’s descriptive and heartbreaking language by acting as still moments of the stories you are reading about. These snap shots are meant to appear as fragmented memories, presented as a makeshift journal to help the reader understand the themes and emotions the stories project. Fear of uncertainty, hopes to escape, comfort vs. potential happiness, desire vs. disappointment, all elements that sum up the stories in Dubliners, and hopefully through the graphic design choices I have made.

serial killer trading cards & info graphic
abstract This “wild card assignment lead me to research a topic I have always found disturbing and fascinating, the dark nature and history about serial killers. Inspired by the vintage children’s playing cards, baseball trading cards, and the art of illustration, the series of trading cards, packaged within an informative poster include original hard drawn illustrations. This series of cards are intended for an audience that appreciates this off beat topic with a sense of humor and fondness for kitsch.

mission punk
MP
abstract Mission Punk is a typeface designed based the San Francisco neighborhood with the most character and charisma, the Mission District. A neighborhood rich with Latin American culture, the Mission is also home to a lively music scene that is usually a little rough around the edges. This typeface aims to express a punk rock, fun and creative personality that ties together with the neighborhood’s roots. The typeface was also inspired heavily by the existing street art and the numerous walls of expressive posters expressing a wide range of messages.

research
interviews + observations In order to make a compelling argument to the college of Liberal and Creative Arts, the voices of faculty and students are crucial in making a difference and influencing the final design solution. A series of one on one interviews, group interviews, and online surveys were the main source of research, exploring the opinions of professors and students from a range of creative arts majors, in addition to experts who run creative work spaces to set designers who influence the final creative work space proposal.

Liz Ordway DAI Visual Communication “ Real life social media ” - in the sense of curating a space for everybody to share. Not just a space to only collaborate, but for artist to expose their work.
Ricardo Baltazar DAI Visual Communication “ Overall, I think its important to have an overlap of the disciplines, because we don’t know everything. Collaboration is important because you get to interact with other people, and create a more well rounded final product. ”
Alphonzo Solorzano owner of The Little Lodge “ How is your space going to be financed? That is the most important aspect. Remember, there are projects that are funded my the public, crowd sourcing… think of kick starter events or any other ways to fundraise your project. ”

inspiration existing creative work spaces+ design
This project was heavily inspired by the open, collaborative work spaces that schools such as CCA and CalArts provide for their students. While San Francisco State University is unlike these schools in that they are not soley dedicated to creative arts majors, SFSU is a campus that supports the arts and having a space for students to grow socially and creatively would boost student moral, which may result in a higher success rate for graduation and job security.

65
design solution
The final solution for this project is a proposal package prepared for the dean of the College of Liberal and Financial Arts, to propose that DAI should be granted the funding to update/transform and maintain the Vis Comm Studio. The final design aims to be an information graphic poster with both a written and visual arguement to the College of LCA, in addition to a mock up floor plan and suggested furnishings, tools, and supplies needed for a student design studio.

71
abstract The First Kiss Atlas project is a collection of data mapping out anonymous first kiss experiences that occurred in San Francisco. Through a Google Form survey shared on Facebook, friends of the researcher (and friends of friends) shared the sweet, humorous, horrifying, and intimate details of any one specific “first kiss, between them and another person. For this project the term first kiss can mean many things, for example, a person’s very first kiss ever, or just a first kiss they have with someone new. The survey was created and posted on April 18th, 2016, and within two days 100 surveyors responded. The following are a series of maps and stats that share their stories.
