theepic epicof ofgilgamesh gilgamesh the This project is an opportunity to explore modern design styles with an ancient theme. The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest stories found on clay tablets, dating back to Mesopotamian times. The story reveals contemporary themes of love, friendship, loyalty, and masculinity. My book design narrates and illustrates the storyline for modern readers.

THE COMING OF ENKIDU Gilgamesh went abroad in the world, but he met with none who could withstand his arms till be came to Uruk. But the men of Uruk muttered in their houses, ‘Gilgamesh sounds the tocsin for his amusement, his arrogance has no bounds by day or night. No son is left with his father, for Gilgamesh takes them all, even the children; yet the king should be a shepherd to his people. His lust leaves no virgin to her lover, neither the warrior’s daughter nor the wife of the noble; yet this is the shepherd of the city, wise, comely, and resolute.’

paragraph break The gods heard their lament, the gods of heaven cried to the Lord of Uruk, to Anu the god of Uruk: ‘A goddess made him, strong as a savage bull, none can withstand his arms. No son is left with his father, for Gilgamesh takes them all; and is this the king, the shepherd of his people? His lust leaves no virgin to her lover, neither the warrior’s daughter nor the wife of the noble.’ When Anu had heard their lamentation the gods cried to Aruru, the goddess of creation, ‘You made him, O Aruru; now create his equal; let it be as like him as his own reflection, his second self; stormy heart for stormy heart. Let them contend together and leave Uruk in quiet.’ So the goddess conceived an image in her mind, and it was of the stuff of Anu of the firmament. She dipped her hands in water and pinched off clay, she let it fall in the wilderness, and noble Enkidu was created.

image research The book’s theme is based on friendship, loyalty, and adventure. These themes will also be expressed visually. The readers should finish this book with a realization that everybody in their lives are important, and death can affect the most important person in their lives in extreme ways; whether good or bad. After the death of Gilgamesh’s best friend, Enkidu, he seeks to find immortality. In the end, he did not get to achieve immortality; however he learned a valuable lesson. With that, the reader should also feel grateful and appreciative for everything that they have. My images tie together the relationship between natural forces and the living.

design proposal The Epic of Gilgamesh is an ancient tale of a journey with two men who started off as foes, but quickly grew a strong friendship. Throughout the story, the bull is often used as a metaphor for strength, as well as a resemblance for Gilgamesh. Different aspects of a bull are illustrated against black and white photographs of nature. The silhouettes develop in each chapter to show that although Gilgamesh shows a strong and heroic characteristic, he is really a soft, loving and kind-hearted person. At the same time, the illustrations act as a narration of a major scene in the chapter. As shown in the entire book, the color combination reflects with the ancient timeframe (black and white) with the contemporary (orange) meaning of the story. No matter what century that a story is written in, the meaning of that story is always relevant.

Chapter page concept THE FOREST JOURNEY
Enlil of the mountain, the father of the gods, had decreed the destiny of Gilgamesh. So Gilgamesh dreamed and Enkidu said, ‘The meaning of the dream is this. The father of the gods has given you kingship, such is your destiny, everlasting life is not your destiny. Because of this do not be sad at heart, do not be grieved or oppressed. He has given you power to bind and to loose, to be the darkness and the light of

mankind. He has given you unexampled supremacy over the people, victory in battle from which no fugitive returns, in forays and assaults from which there is no going back. But do not abuse this power, deal justly with your servants in the palace, deal justly before Shamash.’
The eyes of Enkidu were full of tears and his heart was sick. He sighed bitterly and Gilgamesh met his eye and said, ‘My friend, why do you sigh so bitterly?’
But Enkidu opened his mouth and said, ‘I am weak, my arms have lost their strength, the cry of sorrow sticks in my throat, I am oppressed by idleness.’
It was then that the lord Gilgamesh turned his thoughts to the Country of the Living; on the Land of Cedars the lord Gilgamesh reflected. He said to his servant Enkidu, ‘I have not established my name stamped on bricks as my destiny decreed; therefore I will go to the country where the cedar is felled. I will set up my name in the place where the names of famous men are written, and where- no man’s name is written yet I will wise a monument to the gods. Because of the evil that is in the land, we will go to the forest and destroy the evil; for in the forest lives Humbaba

stitch stitch This is a digital illustration project revolving around an object that does not convey a change in trend or time period. The perfect subject for this was a stapler. Although staplers have changed over time with unique designs, the Swingline stapler has held their streamline shape for decades, and are still sold on the market today.
17
18
image research The Swingline 747 stapler is the most popular model of stapler that has been on the market since the late 60’s. Since it has become an iconic “retro looking object, it would be appropriate to illustrate this poster with a faded, vintage color pallet. These are examples of modern artists who recreated vintage posters.

maketeach teach make This is a poster design for the San Francisco State University Design Space. The gallery is held to showcase artwork in the University’s design faculty, including the industrial, visual, and textile department. The name, Make Teach; Make Teach, has an intentional theme of repetition that reflects the faculty’s workflow of making something in their trade, then teaching it to their students, and repeating it again.

crossroadstrading tradingco. co. crossroads This is a collection of photos taken for Crossroads Trading Company. The photoshoot was a Spring Trend Report for 2015 that focused on all-white monochrome, all-black monochrome, and fruity colors. Each look is assigned to an appropriate location. The rose garden suited an all-white theme. The black marbled walls complimented the edgy yet elegant black attire. Lastly, the turquoise gate from a junkyard made a nice contrast with a coral dress.
38
Images on this page is photographed in the San Jose Rose Garden. It is a common location for wedding photography, so the white monochromatic outfits take on a pure and innocent feel along with the fresh roses.
40
The black and white marbled walls are found at the back parking lot of San Jose’s Westfield Valley Fair. For this all-black look, textures are important. The stylist mixed lace, cotton, and mesh together, so the marbled walls created a complimentary background so that the outfits stand out.

A fresh summer outfit calls for an aquatic color palette. These photos were shot in a local recycling facility at their entrance gate. The coral dress stands out against the turquoise background that resembles ocean water. I picked oranges for this look to add an organic and casual element.

paulrand: rand: paul magazinespread spread magazine This magazine spread was designed in tribute to Paul Rand. The color palette and font choices imitate his style, and the written text explains why his work has become so important for branding and logo design.
50
image research These are images designed by Paul Rand. To reflect his design identity into the magazine spread, I researched some of his designs for inspiration. Rand has a common theme of working with primary colors, simple shapes, and playing with negative space. His minimal, yet memorable designs are the reasons why large corporations lean on him for branding. With this magazine spread, bold and primary colors are elements that are focused on.

about about I am a Visual Communications major at San Francisco State University. I enjoy working on brand identity, photoshoots, and art direction. My interest in design started with my first MySpace account in 2006. I learned how to alter HTML codes to make my profile look unique, fun, and captivating. It gave me the opportunity to customize profile pages for other people. Although it is no longer a relevant social media platform, the world of graphic design will never stop growing. I also spend a lot of time listening to music and getting together with friends who inspire me.
