WELCOME!
It is with immense pleasure that we welcome you to San Francisco University High School’s 2023 Decorator Showcase. We missed you in 2022 and the previous two years when the Showcase experiences were either virtual or viewable online. We are ecstatic that you can finally join us in the magic of a live and in-person Showcase!
For the fourth time in its 44-year history, Decorator Showcase takes us to the scenic Sea Cliff neighborhood in San Francisco. A magnificent example of early 18th-century glorious Mediterranean Spanish architecture, 625 El Camino Del Mar embodies the same classic features of a Spanish Castle. The property was built in 1927 and designed by renowned architects Hyman and Appleton, with beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and Marin Headlands. The amazing entrance exudes an elegant and remarkable architecture seldom seen. The 10-foot carved storm doors are reminiscent of a bygone era. Once through these doors, an additional set of intricate iron entry doors bring you into this aweinspiring, one-of-a-kind Sea Cliff home. One is amazed by the glorious finishes encompassing the grand main entry with the stone floors and 25-foot ceilings of the rotunda staircase.
Back in 1977, Nan Rosenblatt, a former SFUHS parent, and Philip Fernandez, the first president of the school’s Parents Association, came up with the idea of the Showcase to raise funds for the school’s financial aid program. Almost half a century later, Decorator Showcase has become a San Francisco institution and tradition. More importantly, it has helped raise over $17 million in financial aid funds and has allowed hundreds of deserving Bay Area students access to a worldclass college preparatory education.
Decorator Showcase is a premier West Coast design event that celebrates elegance, architecture, and sophisticated design. Thank you to the Design Advisory Board for their discerning guidance in curating the many design submissions received. We thank each of the chosen twenty-seven incredibly talented designers who have donated their time, expertise, and many gifts to transform 625 El Camino Del Mar into a spectacular home. The dedication, proficiency, and pursuit of excellence by this design team is nothing short of amazing.
The Decorator Showcase would not be possible without the generosity of our patrons, guests, sponsors, and donors. Thank you for your dedication to Showcase and for your heartfelt support of the UHS financial aid program.

We also give our sincere thanks to Matt Levinson, head of school, Shaundra Bason, director of development, and the Development team, including Jenny Bittner Borden, Thelma Garza, Alezja Metts, Ana Lima de Los Santos, Marianna Stark, and Marjan Philhour. Additionally, we are truly grateful to our UHS community and the more than 200 volunteers supporting nine different Decorator Showcase committees who have worked together over many months to bring the event to fruition. Including docents, house managers, cashiers, group hosts, the house historian, and many others, we know it takes a village and we are grateful for every one of you. Last, but not least, we give a special round of applause to all the Decorator Showcase committee chairs for their unbridled energy, tireless leadership, and steadfast commitment to the success of the project.
We hope you enjoy the journey through 625 El Camino Del Mar and leave feeling uplifted by the designers’ creations, and are equally fulfilled by the support you have generously provided for students of University High School.

THE HELLER HOUSE: A SEA CLIFF TREASURE
The distinctive home at the corner of El Camino Del Mar and 30th Avenue in Sea Cliff was built for the Heller family in 1927. The Sea Cliff neighborhood began to take shape in 1913 as one of San Francisco’s “residence parks.” These neighborhoods were rich in landscape and suburban in feel. With strict deed covenants controlling defined minimum construction costs, setback requirements, landscaping guidelines, architectural character, as well as ownership restrictions, which excluded many minorities, these park-like neighborhoods were often referred to as “restricted parks.” These exclusionary practices based on race were curbed in 1948 after the United States Supreme Court ruling in Shelley v. Kraemer.
While not as expansive as some of San Francisco’s neighborhoods such as St. Francis Wood or Forest Hill, Sea Cliff was a prestigious neighborhood and attracted many business leaders and creative architects. One such individual was Walter David Heller, grandson of Martin Heller, a prominent, Bavarian-born merchant. Born the year of his grandfather’s death, Walter Heller, was a 1916 Stanford graduate, and a veteran of World War I. His parents, Moses and Adele Heller, had resided along San Francisco’s most fashionable street, Van Ness Avenue, before the 1906 earthquake. Moses Heller built a silk importing business, Heller Klein & Co. In November 1922, Walter Heller married Jeanette Meier of Portland, Oregon. Their wedding was reported as “one of the prettiest home weddings of the season” and had the Portland newspapers abuzz with accounts of the festivities.
After being duly feted in Portland, the young couple returned to San Francisco, and resided in an apartment on California Street. In 1927, the Hellers engaged renowned architects, Hyman and Appleton, to design a 6,000 square-foot, Spanish-inspired home with impressive views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands. The house with its red tile roofs, decorative chimneys, rusticated entry, tall multipaned windows, and balconettes was set on a prominent corner lot. Its distinctive set of double entry doors—the outer of beautifully paneled wood and the inner a delicate filagree of metal and glass—provided an inviting sequence into the home’s foyer. A lovely spiral staircase of polished concrete seems to float in the foyer. The distinctive light fixture, by Boyd’s Lighting Company, hanging in the stair hall was featured in an architectural magazine in April 1927.
The architectural partnership of Samuel Lightner Hyman and Abraham Appleton had many ties to San Francisco’s tight-knit Jewish Community. Hyman, who studied at UC Berkeley and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, opened his San Francisco practice in 1917 and subsequently designed San Francisco’s Hebrew Home for the Aged Disabled. Hyman began collaborating with Appleton in 1922. Together they worked on the Jewish Community Center at California and Presidio (now demolished). In addition to the Heller house, Hyman and Appleton also designed the Sea Cliff houses at 2950 and 2970 Lake Street, executed in the neighborhood’s popular Spanish Revival style, as well as other stately residences and buildings throughout San Francisco.
The Hellers were an integral part of Sea Cliff and of San Francisco’s Jewish community. They had three sons, whom they raised in the house on El Camino Del Mar. The 1930 Federal Census tells us the Hellers had several in-house staff including a German governess, an Irish cook, a Swedish maid, and a Japanese gardener. Their large household would have been bustling with activity. When Walter Heller died in 1966, he was celebrated for his philanthropic work, as was Jeanette Heller when she died in December 1971. The Hellers’ strong legacy of community service was emblematic of the long history of San Francisco’s Jewish families giving
back to the city. It is only fitting that the Hellers’ beloved home in Sea Cliff is this year’s Decorator Showcase.
Bridget Maley is a San Francisco-based architectural historian and writer. She has worked on projects involving some of San Francisco’s most significant landmarks. Her projects also include historic buildings in many National and State Parks. Bridget is a trustee of Grace Cathedral, and she is currently researching the architectural history of Episcopal churches throughout California.

SAN FRANCISCO UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL
We are guided by both our Mission and our Equity & Community Statements:
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
San Francisco University High School welcomes students of demonstrated motivation and ability to engage in an education that fosters responsibility and the spirited pursuit of knowledge. We are a school where adults believe in the promise of every student, and together we work to build and sustain a community of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and talents. UHS challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self.
EQUITY & COMMUNITY STATEMENT
At UHS, we believe that the deepest learning requires collaboration among people who embody a diversity of backgrounds, beliefs, experiences, and perspectives. In order to build and sustain a community that is comprised of a wide range of social and cultural identities, we must continually engage in furthering our self-knowledge, equity literacy, and ability to communicate effectively across differences. We challenge ourselves to do this work on both a personal and an institutional level, recognizing that our community is part of a larger and more complex world.
OUR HISTORY
The founders of San Francisco University High School believed in the educational value of diversity and pluralism, imagining a school that drew upon the exciting variety and resources of San Francisco and that developed creative, capable, and socially responsible leaders. They envisioned a school that would achieve both equity and excellence, encompassing the arts, academics, athletics, and community engagement. Nearly 50 years since its founding, the catalytic vision for the school has produced generations of graduates who have distinguished themselves by making meaningful contributions in all sectors of society, and in doing so, built an outstanding reputation for the school.
The school continues to strive to meet this ambitious plan. Students and faculty are drawn to the school for its strong academic program, its culture of inquiry and intellectual energy, its robust athletic and arts programs, and its commitment to supporting student success. With our core values of inquiry, care, integrity, agency, and interconnection, UHS continues to be a place of continuous learning and growth. UHS is at the forefront of changing high school culture, affirming our fundamental commitment to intellectual challenge and vitality while simultaneously responding to the demands and opportunities of tomorrow.
OUR VISION
We are a courageous community dedicating ourselves to:
EMBRACING education as a transformational, rather than a transactional, endeavor
EMPOWERING our students to invent and sustain their own vision of success and sense of purpose
ESTABLISHING a school culture that provides a dynamic and challenging education while simultaneously promoting wellness, care, and wholeness
EMBODYING our fundamental belief that collaboration among people with diverse backgrounds and life experiences is essential to deep learning
ENSURING that University High School remains a strategically nimble institution, engaged in learning, reflection, and growth on all levels

MEDITERRANEAN MEETS MODERN CALIFORNIA: A MAGNETICALLY MATCHED EXTERIOR
With the magnificent 18th-Century Spanish architecture of 625 El Camino Del Mar, Martinelli Design drew inspiration from Russell’s love of fashion and classic Hollywood glamour. Inspired by the iconic film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a moody, dark, and sophisticated color palette echoes in curated materials and design features. The landscape transformation starts with refinished steps reminiscent of old-world cobble stone, the color chosen to reflect Hepburn’s soft elegance. The landscape palette contrasts the moody design features with rich, vibrant plants. Playing with scale, trees are elevated by modern metal planters and will mature to tower above. Below sits a bench to pause and enjoy the nearby water feature while breathing in fresh coastal air. Natural materials—the shou sugi ban, concrete tiles, crushed rock, and droughttolerant California natives—marry timeless, elegant craftsmanship with modern advocacy for environmental care.
Special thanks to:

THE GLOWING CANOPY
Nature is full of surprises. Not readily visible from the front doors, the installation reveals itself branch by branch as one enters the foyer and is inspired to look upward. Above the sinuous concrete staircase, a tangle of softly glowing branches encompasses the dome, its curves complementing the organic metalwork on the existing windows and entry doors. Within the canopy, an existing chandelier threads its way to the ceiling where a leafy plaster rosette motif can still be seen. New organic homages abound in the seating area that grounds the “forest floor” below.
The beautifully crafted foyer and stair atrium boast an authentic Mediterranean Spanish architecture. We were inspired to preserve and complement the space by telling a story of symbiosis—wherein the modern slowly emerges alongside the historic, coexisting respectfully with it by sharing the organic nature of the space.
Special thanks to:
GUA team—Our Principal Geddes Ulinskas, for his immense creativity, thoughtfulness and determination in pursuing this ambitious installation; key contributors—Meredith Brown, who collaborated with me on the design, for her honest opinion and all encompassing support; and Ernani Barea, who dedicated his time and energy to bring the trees to life. LIVING ROOM
Warm and inviting are keywords to use when describing this design. We wanted to make it feel like you could be anywhere—Madrid, Paris, London, Milan, or indeed, San Francisco. Our goal was to reinterpret an old San Francisco mythic quality, with a modern twist, sensual and sophisticated, yet cozy enough for a young family to feel at home. We designed the space to comfortably entertain both smaller and larger groups, with plenty of space to mingle and lounge, making this room multifunctional for formal and informal activities.
With our deep appreciation for the history of this amazing city, we felt inspired to leave untouched some of the architectural details, such as the coffer ceiling and fireplace mantel, as we felt these details provided a certain depth and authenticity to the space. We also wanted to represent California, so the artwork is mostly from West Coast artists, which helped give this European-inspired room a modern edge.
Special thanks to:
The San Francisco Decorator Showcase committee, volunteers and staff for welcoming us and for their hard work.
All of our amazing sponsors and vendors.
Geoffrey De Sousa and Erik Hughes for their continued support. Our vibrant design community who creates everyday.

...AND THE HAZY SEA POWDER ROOM AND ANTECHAMBER
A brief respite from the party outside, muffled laughter and music reaching in as you stand reflected in a wooden cave bounded by misty mountain tops and creations of the earth. You have stepped through this portal with the desire to breathe deeply and fill your lungs with calming tones of muted green, ochre, and blue that transport you to a world where you had always hoped you would end up.
Our design inspiration was born from the extraordinary banks of Sea Cliff, where the quality of light is shaped by translucent mist and reflections on the water. Carved wood and lava stone mimic the craggy Pacific Coast landscape, and Explosion Blue Quartzite recalls the whirling ocean nearby. These theatrical spaces welcome all who visit this home with a sense of wonder, drama, play, and charm. We hope you’ll be delighted.

SUNSET SALON
All about entertainment, the SUNSET SALON dining bar provides a joyous escape during a busy dinner party; a personal disco tucked behind the Mediterranean carved door. The bar serves as a cocktail-maker’s laboratory—a tall monolith of Patagonia Granite with undulating bar shelves carrying all to be desired perched atop. The bar curves to a seated overhang where a pair of stools are tucked away awaiting the next session of huddled whispers. Light from the home’s original stained glass window streams through and illuminates the space as the sun sets, signaling that it is time for a cocktail. Cheers.

THE APOLLONIA DINING ROOM
Steeped in the moody mythologies of a lost era, the Apollonia Dining Room startles tradition with supernatural beauty. Its furnishings are rare and ravenous for culture, obliquely elegant with hybrid forms and opulent textures.
Set piece to intimate, idea-frenzied victuals, the Apollonia regales in bohèmian rapture, nurturing psychic connections among intellects, aesthetes, and empaths. Awash in ambient, absinthe- and aqua-hued horizons—incised with rich lacquered woods, églomisé, and caned mahogany—they rage airily into the cascading night beneath luminous plumage and sheers to the heavens.

Above all else, an enormous thanks to the Chroma design team. Thank you Victor, Jaidyn, Jennifer, Lindsay, Emily, Summer and Tawnia. Thank you to the Decorator Showcase Committee, San Francisco University High School staff and volunteers for your steadfast support and for bringing this beautiful event to life. To our incredibly generous artisans and vendors who contributed their inspiration, craft, time, and efforts; we thank you. To our supremely sophisticated and dedicated clients for their enduring belief in the Chroma vision. Thank you, thank you.

DE DÉJEUNER À DESSERT
Adjacent to the kitchen lies an elegant tea room—a space for the lady of the house to socialize over a game of Mahjong or enjoy a sumptuous high tea in style. In a nod to the home’s traditional architecture, the room is full of classic design elements that are married with contemporary pieces to create a space that’s current, fresh and full of grace.
The light-filled room is enveloped in soothing sage tones with a hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper of jasmine and bougainvillea trailing down from the ceiling. The contemporary center table in wire brushed white oak grounds the room and is surrounded by dining chairs upholstered in a soft wool sateen. A palm chandelier with a white plaster finish hangs above as a focal point. The floors are hand-painted with a geometric pattern to add texture and visual interest. Classic silk window coverings finish the space, creating the perfect room for enjoying everything from Parisian pastries to parlor games and Pekoe tea.
Special thanks to:
The Decorator Showcase Committee, Volunteers, and Staff along with the Design Advisory Board. My wonderful vendors who contributed their time, efforts and talents—and without whom this room would never have been possible.
My loyal clients who permit my passion to be my job so that no day feels like “work”. My little army that keeps me sane—Sarah, Kaity, Merry, Eaindray, Caroline, Simone, Sophia. My supportive husband, family, & friends. My publicist and part-time therapist.

THE ELEVATOR
The Garden at Dusk. Whenever I have a chance, I love bringing the outside to the inside, especially into a small space buried in the center of the building with no windows. The color palette was inspired by a drive home after a very long day at work, with the perfectly colored sky and the golden, sparkly reflections off the plants that I was passing by. I wanted a chance to stop, stand, stare and enjoy it. My hope is to offer you that chance to stop and enjoy a magical little space, if just for a moment.
Special thanks to:
Thanks to the amazing Showcase staff, volunteers, docents and parents. I may not know exactly what all of you do, but I’m certain this wouldn’t be happening if you weren’t doing it!

THE UPSTAIRS KEEP
The actual definition of a keeping room is “an area adjacent to the kitchen”. It is a term that dates back to Colonial times when homes were typically heated by a small fireplace or wood-burning stove in the kitchen. Families often slept in the keeping room during the winter months when the rest of the house was cold.
For the 2023 Decorator Showcase, we are updating the traditional family room—the ‘Upstairs Keep’ will be a flexible lounge for the entire family to gather at the beginning of the day (coffee, meditation, emails), the middle of the day (studying, zoom calls, naps), and the end of the day (after-dinner toddies, games, bedtime stories).
Features: new Hakwood floors, lime paint on the walls and ceiling dome, and a hand-knotted chandelier. A vein cut travertine fireplace mantel for warmth; and gauzy sheers let in light while maintaining privacy. Silk and wool hand-tufted area rug with shaggy silk accents underfoot. On one side will be a games/center table and banquette to sit and study, and on the other side will be a plush two piece chaise lounge for the family to pile onto.

A RARE GEM
For over 10,000 years, humans have collected and worn gems to adorn their bodies and lift their spirts. The Primary Suite was inspired by gemstones—by their colors, their joyfulness, their ability to bring life to an inanimate object, and their undeniable allure. The designer intends the bedroom to feel like a jewelry box where all the colors are gemstones, and each piece is unique and collectible. Like precious stones, the room displays a quiet, calming yet sparkling energy which mirrors the gems that inspired it, and the light and landscape that lie just outside the windows.

CURVE APPEAL
Playing with a darker and moodier theme, the primary bath is the bedroom’s sultry companion. Together, the suite performs a pas de deux—an alternating rhythm of light and dark, demure and bold. The bath is a personal retreat for two—a space that brings strength, order, and grace in its coupling. Curves abound, materials transition in synchrony, and the result is a whimsical yet calming space to finish a night on the town.

HIS MODERN HEADQUARTERS
One thing is for sure, the home office has changed. A bustling business center that now must double as a respite from the chaos of working from home. To meet this challenge, smokey glass, warm, sophisticated fabrics and a moody color palette. Design that speaks of quality, ingenuity, work ethic and style.
The marble desk is sturdy and commanding, elegant and crafted. Across the room, a wet bar beckons drinks and discussions. Mirrored bookcases provide displays of collected identity. Armchairs dance with intricate texture. This is a room of masculine beauty. Experiences here are shared over the cool lips of crystal glassware, reminiscent of that golden age of California, inspired by industry, bridges and the successes made possible when we build together.
Special thanks to:

HER STUDY
With reverence to this 18th-century Mediterranean-style residence, our interpretation of her study is a space where one can muse, create, and find inspiration. A soothing cocoon of lime-wash walls, custom oscillating ceiling detail, and a repeated arch motif harmonize as the foundation of the space. Arched openings housed in cabinetry customized with bronze wire mesh, neatly display an assortment of bespoke accessories, books, and sculptures from local artists. A vintage-inspired writing desk sits below Parisian sourced artwork, while a custom corner swivel chair gives a place for intentional moments of pause as the light filters through the custom drapery. A corner espresso alcove swathed in a mineral paper wallcovering, custom cabinetry supporting a unique marble slab and shelves thoughtfully displaying things of beauty, assist to move the wheels of contemplation forward.

2ND FLOOR HALLWAY
The exhibition of Jim Marshall’s rock photos curated by On Approval for the Decorator Showcase is a stunning display of the legendary photographer’s work. Jim Marshall captured some of the most iconic moments in rock history, including images of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. The photos are displayed in such a way that transports visitors back to the 1960s and 1970s, when rock music was at its height of popularity. The exhibition features over 10 black and white photos, each one carefully selected to showcase Marshall’s incredible talent and eye for detail.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is Marshall’s photos of Jimi Hendrix, which are considered to be some of the best images ever taken of the iconic musician. Marshall had a unique ability to capture the energy and intensity of live performances, and his photos of Hendrix are no exception. The photos show Hendrix in action playing his guitar with passion and precision. Marshall’s ability to capture the essence of Hendrix’s music is truly remarkable. These photos are a must-see for any fan of rock music or photography and highlight the important historical throughlines of San Francisco’s disruptor culture.
Marshall’s images continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike. The exhibition is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest rock photographers, and it is a testament to the power of music and art to transcend time and culture.

SADIE’S ARTY PARTY
Life is a blank canvas.
Inspired by an expression of forms, playfulness, geometric shapes, and color, this bedroom is designed for a young person to feel free to imagine, create and have fun. The focal point is a custom statement bed inspired by the 1980’s Memphis movement. Like many creative movements, Memphis was a reaction against the status quo. Based on the idea that colors and shapes can inspire and persuade cheerfulness, this is an environment that will foster creativity, artistic energy, and imagination by living on and off the canvas.

The “Memphis Raku” mosaic pattern is comprised of Sardonyx, Ruby, Lapis Lazuli, Peridot, Blue Spinel, and Morganite, which together sparkle among a field of white glass. Custom-colored plumbing and light fixtures continue the artful play of colors and shapes, together making daily routines into a uniquely fun experience.

MONTANA’S MONARCHS
An imaginative retreat among the fluttering butterflies, this little girl’s bedroom creates an inspiring environment for her to grow and her tastes to evolve.
Tucked away under the arch is a custom reading nook, an enchanted place to hide away and curl up with a good book.
Antiques, objects of curiosity, and hints of whimsy are incorporated throughout the room while the bed and study area rely on modern practicality and aesthetics.
A lively bedroom for a girl’s mind and spirit to flourish.

REFRESH AND TAKE FLIGHT
Inspired by a ‘kaleidoscope’ (a group of butterflies), the theme became more abstract. A subtle, yet graphic hand-painted wallpaper is offset by bold black and white striped stone wainscotting and shower walls. Your eyes wander down to the prismatic black and white stone flooring.
A custom rift sawn oak vanity and dressing table, both with marble countertops ground the space. Two windows, veiled with embroidered butterfly sheers, allow the natural light to flutter into the space.
Above all, this is a space for a young girl to grow up and evolve; brushing teeth, daily routines, but also dreaming in front of the mirror: getting ready for school, doing her hair, experimenting with makeup, getting ready for dances, going out. Feeling her best.

PROFESSOR EMENEAU’S FUJINOHANA: GUEST BEDROOM
This room is a tribute to Professor Emeneau, my former next door neighbor who, while in his study, adored the wisteria on the trellis between our homes. He would converse with me on how beautifully his wisteria was blooming and would say the flower name in my native tongue, FUJINOHANA. I wanted to share the beauty of de Gournay’s stunning wisteria with the Showcase house this year. It is time to celebrate life after the pandemic, smell the flowers and enjoy spring!
The bedroom is designed fairly simply so that the hand-painted wisteria on the wallpaper, bed canopy and sheer curtain is the center of the design feature. To compliment the various shades of wisteria, soft green to deep teal colors are carefully distributed on the bed. Simple forms and shapes and interesting details in furnishings add curiosity and surprise to the timeless modern classic design.

With its open connection to the rest of the home, we use a contemporary style with a smart tech design approach for the l-shaped laundry room. The key challenge was to fit everything in the small space while keeping it functional and charming. We wanted to create something a little moody and different from a typical laundry room, a place that felt special and just as beautiful as the rest of the spaces in the home. The defining features of this dusky, charcoal-hued space are the dramatic Paws-itively uplifting dog-themed wallcovering, warm modern custom cabinets, light fixture, concrete-look tile floors, and a state-of-the-art wash tower with central control hub. Finally, an added smart device in the room to remain connected with the rest of the home and to be entertained.

THE NEST
Feel a sense of calm as you enter the bathroom of the Kingfisher Suite. The clean lines and the modern feel of lightness are paired with natural materials layered with subtle color and texture. The warm light from a hand-dipped pendant casts a warm glow and catches reflections in the mirror. Run your hand over the cool, polished, hand-plastered walls. Be refreshed by a cascading stream of water in the shower, dispensed by state of the art controls. This space wraps you in a world of tranquility and our carefully constructed nest shelters you from the outside world.

THE KINGFISHER SUITE
Marsh and Clark Design’s space was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s “The Kingfisher”. This work depicts a Kingfisher bird perched amongst reeds of a marsh, with its plumage of blues and greens, causing a scattering of blue light. We hope to transport you to this calming world as you step under the archway and through the shimmering hall into this sanctuary. Hand-painted walls depict delicate reeds swaying in the breeze, floating birds illuminate the juxtaposition of old and new elements. Every artisan touch, antique and even 3D printed furniture merge into a haven of tranquility.

REFLECTIONS ON STARDUST
Inspired by space observatories and musings on our cosmic connections in this life and beyond, this atmospheric media room is at once transportive and yet cozily familiar. It is a space for movie nights, deep conversations and even deeper belly-laughs with loved ones, or for getting lost in dreamy thoughts while peering into constellations embedded throughout the room. Our room’s immersive design belies the simplicity of its furnishings: the one sofa, custom designed with 2 chaises and plush cushions, surrounds a 3-piece “TV table” that comes together as an octagon—connecting this space to the architecture of the house upstairs. The wet bar, with a tile mosaic that continues the enveloping murals, makes space for cocktails and sparkling water, which pair perfectly with wines and sakes stashed in our positively psychedelic plaster and acrylic wine cellar across the room.
We are all born of stardust, and we will all return to stardust—and in between, may we all receive love and energy from the brightness of each other’s stars.
Special thanks to:
My incredible team – Cait Rosso, Michelle Cruz, Kyle Price, and Kendall St. Claire— thank you for your spirit, your creativity, your commitment, and your patience (!!). I could not build this without you.
Our extended team of artisans, craftspeople, builders, makers, and vendor partners—you make it possible for our ideas to come to life.
Our wonderful clients—your support and belief in us means everything.
Caroline Lizarraga—how could I have ever dreamed of the ways you inspire me? So grateful for our collaborations and friendship. The whole crew at HEWN—the ways you have cheered us on and introduced us to such talented people—thank you for all the ways you’ve supported this room.

INTERSTELLAR CELLAR
A cosmic extension of our “Reflections on Stardust” movie room, this petite space is a delightful other-worldly take on a wine cellar. For a room designed to preserve wines that ground us in the past, the bright cobalt Venetian plaster walls and crystal-clear acrylic racks are playfully “tomorrow” takes on traditional cellar elements. While not every space need be a champagne supernova of design, we hope our cellar reminds you that any space, for any purpose—even a room principally for storage—can become a celebration of the stuff that brings you to life.
Special thanks to:
The staff, volunteers, and organizers of this year’s SF Decorator Showcase, and to the leadership at San Francisco University High School—especially Jenny and Thelma—my biggest, sincerest thank you for everything you do to bring us all together and bring this all to life.
The interior design community leaders who’ve trusted me and my team with this opportunity to introduce ourselves in this year’s house, I am so grateful. A special thank you to Diane, for believing in me and encouraging me to apply.
My San Francisco community of fellow creatives, fellow misfits, fellow business owners: everything I have now is thanks to every way you’ve inspired me and given me roots. And to my family—to Daniel, to Fang, to our extended families, to my stardust Bean—you are my whole heart.
Sending big love to everyone reading this.
LOUNGE BATHROOM
A dark, moody, and sexy bathroom to enhance the lounging experience and postworkout rejuvenation. Intended to feel like part of an exclusive members-only club, this full bathroom checks all the boxes for its distinct design and overall comfort. The gentle texture and soft glaze of the ceramic tile cladding the walls to the stark detailing of the quartz slabs on the flooring are uniquely juxtaposed to represent old and new, traditional and contemporary.
Special thanks to:
To my loyal friends at Cambria Quartz (Courtney Genovese, Jessica Herzog and Arik Tender), Michelle Logandro of Arizona Tile, Miles Endo Studio Endo, and Dana Naples of Art Hawke. The team at Cook Construction for their professionalism and execution. And of course, to Jenny Bittner Borden and Thelma Garza for their guidance throughout this journey.
Last but not least, to my partner Lucas, my mother, and my brother Aaron for their endless love and support. And to my late father who I know is looking down on me, I hope I’m doing you proud.

BREAKTHROUGH SUMMERBRIDGE SAN FRANCISCO
Established at San Francisco University High School in 1978, Summerbridge was the inspiration for the first Breakthrough site, which eventually grew into a national network of 24 programs. In 2021, we rebranded to reflect the enduring and growing strength of our alliance with the Collaborative as we became officially known as Breakthrough Summerbridge at San Francisco University High School. In our over 40-year history, we have transformed the lives of over 1,700 Bay Area middle school students and provided a teaching foundation to over 650 high school and college-aged aspiring teachers.
Breakthrough Summerbridge has advanced three primary goals:
1. Preparing ambitious middle school students from underresourced circumstances to enter and thrive in well-matched high schools, for the purpose of securing admission to, succeeding in, and graduating from college.
2. Providing intensive summer teaching fellowships for high school and college students who are passionate about the power of education, and creating meaningful volunteer
experiences throughout the academic year for members of the UHS and San Francisco communities.
3. Transforming lives through the unique and powerful relationship between the Breakthrough Summerbridge and UHS communities and their families.

• We prevented summer learning loss. On average our students:
o Gained 1.4 months in math skills.
o Gained 3.1 months in reading skills.

AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT (ASE) 2022-2023:

Twenty-one UHS juniors and seniors are enrolled in this course where they are trained to be teaching fellows in our program Our 7th and 8th graders take a STEM and literacy project-based learning course taught by our UHS teaching fellows. Teaching Fellows show confidence in planning and implementing engaging lessons, and students share that they enjoy the ASE programing. Positive teacher-student relationships continue to be formed

Coming out of the consultation, Pella’s Architect Series Monumental-Hung windows proved to be the perfect fit, with customized window grids on the wood-clad windows to bring the artwork to life.

The story of the San Francisco Decorator Showcase began in 1977, when Nan Rosenblatt, a former San Francisco University High School parent and an accomplished interior designer, and Philip Fernandez, the first president of the school’s Parents Association, conceived the first Showcase to raise funds for University’s financial aid program. In its first year, the Showcase netted $26,000, and today this prestigious event raises over $600,000 annually. Showcase has taken place at some of the most prestigious addresses in some of the most breathtaking neighborhoods of San Francisco.
