Institute for Responsive Education (REd)

UHS recognizes that traditional academic disciplines cannot always respond nimbly to the everchanging realities in our world. We know that students need spaces in which they can consider questions that are central their evolution as multi-faceted humans. Questions like: What does “wellness” mean to me and my family? How do I ethically engage with communities in which I am an outsider? What are the skills I need to develop in order to manage my time effectively? It is to explore such transdisciplinary considerations that UHS is home to an Institute for Responsive Education (REd): a range of programs that include both mandatory and opt-in components as students move through their four grade levels. Comprised of five Centers that focus on Metacognition & Neurodiversity, Health & Wellness, Equity & Community, Climate Studies, and Community Engagement a student’s four-year REd journey at UHS seeks to educate critically conscious citizens who are invested in bettering the worlds within and outside themselves.
