Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum, written in 1743 to celebrate King George II’s triumphant return from defeating France in battle, features all the radiance and intricacy of Baroque choral music. Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s haunting setting, written in 1985, mimics the effortless harmonies associated with bells, paired with their anomalous overtones. Exhumed for repatriation to Spain in the late 19th century, Romantic painter Francisco Goya’s body was found without a head. In this taut thriller, a Goya devotee takes the rediscovered skull through history, trying to find a way to resurrect the painter’s genius and all the while using it as she sees fit. Award-winning composer Michael Nyman, whose film score for The Piano is ranked in Entertainment Weekly’s top 100 soundtrack albums of all time, partnered with librettist Victoria Hardie to construct this alluring opera. With a cinematic approach, Nyman uses driving minimalist rhythms and lyric melodies to explore ethics and artistic creativity. Singaporean Director Ong Keng Sen, who led the 2006 Festival sell out Geisha, directs this American premiere. Sung in English. Award-winning composer Michael Nyman, whose film score for The Piano is ranked in Entertainment Weekly’s top 100 soundtrack albums of all time, partnered with librettist Victoria Hardie to construct this alluring opera. With a cinematic approach, Nyman uses driving minimalist rhythms and lyric melodies to explore ethics and artistic creativity. Singaporean Director Ong Keng Sen, who led the 2006 Festival sell out Geisha, directs this American premiere. Sung in English. Acclaimed British director John La Bouchardière draws inspiration for his imaginative production from the plays used by Franciscan monks in spreading the story of Jesus’s birth through Latin America. With a libretto including poems by Rosario Castellanos and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz—two of Mexico’s greatest writers—Gospels from the Bible and the Apocrypha, and Martin Luther’s Christmas Sermon, Adams’s oratorio widens the lens to encounter and explore the inexhaustible miracle of birth. Director of Choral Activities Joe Miller conducts this stunning work. Sung in English, Latin, and Spanish with English supertitles.
