momentum This year’s theme represents the current state of the APIA community. With the increase in Asian representation, we are becoming a force to be reckoned with. To say we are already there undermines the hard work still to be done. This yearbook is meant to capture the special moments of AASU this past year. This is a reminder to keep the momentum going for those who will come after us.

History The Asian Student Union (ASU) was founded in 1996 by Faye Hunt and Rich Sealy to unify the Asian organizations already on campus while supporting the needs of the rest of the Asian student body. The name was later changed from ASU to Asian American Student Union (AASU) to better represent the Asian American community at The Florida State University while opening the organization up to spread awareness about Asian heritage and culture to others interested in Asian culture.

Mission The Asian American Student Union (AASU) shall represent the Asian American community at the Florida State University and promote the spread of awareness pertaining to Asian American heritage and culture. AASU will serve to encourage and promote the civic engagement of the Asian and Asian-American community, especially within the student body at the Florida State University. It shall function as an educational and cultural learning instrument for the FSU community, by providing programs and materials, which promote awareness of and appreciation for the various and distinct Asian cultures. AASU shall serve as the nucleus of a network to improve the opportunities and living conditions of the Asian community. To this end, AASU shall represent all registered Asian and Asian American student organizations on campus, coordinate available resources, and serve as a catalyst in protecting the rights and representation of the Asian and AsianAmerican student body.

LILLY SINGH Primarily known as IISuperwomanII on YouTube, Lilly Singh was recently announced as the new host of a late-night talk show, A Little Late with Lilly Singh, formally featuring Carson Daly. The new show shines light on South Asians in the media in a big way.

TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE Based on the 2014 book by Jenny Han, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a Netflix original romantic comedy with the first Asian American Female Lead since Joy Luck Club in 1993. This movie further shows that Asian women can be heroines of any genre.

SANDRA OH An icon for Asian American artists everywhere, Canadian actress Sandra Oh is the first Asian woman to win two Golden Globes. Oh’s accolades celebrate years of Asian actors fighting for roles and recognition beyond stereotypical representation.
