JAN 15-22, 2019
lorida State University honored the legacy of the F late Martin Luther King Jr. during its 31st Annual MLK Week from Tuesday, Jan. 15, through Tuesday, Jan. 22.
The weeklong celebration included events inspired by the theme “More than the Dream.” The goal of the week was to bring the FSU and Tallahassee communities together to reflect on the past and challenge one another to be engaged in creating social justice and advocating for the civil rights of all. The 31st Annual MLK Week began with the "MLK Block Party," an event hosted by six identity-based SGA Agencies. The campus celebrations began with "MLK Market Wednesday."
The ASLC hosted a screening of The Hate U Give, which is based of a book and illuminates the aftermath of one student's traumatic experience witnessing the fatal shooting of her friend. Celebrations continued with the "Dare to Dream Festival," hosted by the City of Tallahassee at Cascades Park, and "Discovering the Past," a program that shared the history of Tallahassee in the Civil Rights Movement. Closing out the week was “An Evening with Charles Blow” at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. Blow is a New York Times columnist known for his fearless brand of political and social commentary in print and on TV.

THE HATE U GIVE SCREENING
AN EVENING WITH CHARLES BLOW
Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right. A panel discussion facilitated by distinguished faculty, alumni, and students immediately following the screening.
As a New York Times columnist known for his fearless brand of political and social commentary, Charles Blow has become a familiar face on TV. His column typically features charts, but it’s mainly his words, written and spoken, that continue to spark conversation and debate about social and political issues of the day. Hosted by the Golden Tribe Lecture Series and the MLK Week Celebration Committee.

Golden Tribe Lecture Series
Charles Blow January 22, 2019
T
hose words from King’s speech “The Other America,” which he delivered to a crowd of students, faculty and staff at Stanford University in April 1967, set the foundation for a lecture by New York Times columnist and political commentator Charles Blow at Florida State University’s MLK Commemoration Ceremony. Blow was the Golden Tribe lecturer at Tuesday’s ceremony, which closed out the 31st Annual FSU MLK Week — a week full of opportunities for celebration, service and dialogue on the civil rights movement of the past and social justice issues in America today. Using the week’s theme, “More Than the Dream,” Blow took the opportunity to talk about several of King’s impactful speeches other than his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
Top, left to right: FSU President Thrasher; SGA Vice President Brandon Brown; Charles Blow Bottom, left to right: Union Productions staff with Charles Blow after the program; FSU Gospel Choir Bottom: MLK Book Stipend recipients Blow told attendees that King was assassinated on a Memphis hotel balcony one year to the month after delivering the address at Stanford. At the time of his death, King was in Memphis to support black sanitation workers who were on strike demanding a fair wage and fair working conditions. “We have to ask ourselves if we are willing enough, strong enough, brave enough to keep fighting for racial equality and economic justice,” Blow said. “The kind that King ended his life fighting for.” Blow also discussed King’s “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top” speech, delivered the day before he was assassinated. In it, Blow said, King challenged America to make its constitutional
principles of freedom and equality fully inclusive of black people. “It is now up to us to make America be true to what it said on paper,” Blow said. “That all men are created equal, and that they are endowed with certain inalienable rights — and that among those rights are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Before Blow’s talk, the FSU Gospel Choir performed and FSU President John Thrasher offered words of welcome. “This is an important opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and how he inspired us to be a better America.” Thrasher said. “We know we still have work to do, but we must have faith, as Dr. King did, that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice.” 2018-2019

Steve Murphy and Javier Peña September 25, 2018
F
ormer DEA Special Agents and inspiration for the Golden Globe-nominated Netflix Original Series NARCOS, Steve Murphy and Javier Peña take audiences to the edge of their seats as they recount their riveting pursuit of Pablo Escobar and deliver practical and oftentimes unorthodox advice on working together to achieve success despite challenges. The American heroes responsible for the capture and downfall of infamous drug cartel leader Pablo Escobar, Steve and Javier were DEA special agents at the center of the largest, most complex, multi-national, high-profile investigation of its time. Their incredible journey pursuing the world’s first narco-terrorist following his brutal reign as head of the Medellin cartel in the 1980’s and early 1990’s is depicted in the Netflix series NARCOS. Now, these celebrated law enforcement officers take you deep into the history books as they reveal inside stories from a good-versus-evil battle that seems too wild to be true. Along the way, they share lessons they learned on effective leadership, teamwork and split-second decision making amid extreme circumstances. With tactful humor and rarely seen visuals, Steve and Javier complement anecdotes about their experiences in hostile and oftentimes life-threatening conditions to leave audiences with a memorable and entertaining look at the real-life cartel drama. As a team, their admiration for one another’s efforts in their celebrated battle over evil is unmistakable and inspires you to recognize the possibilities created by working together.

As a part of the Institute trainings in the Spring, in addition to MLS, participants were also required to attend the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) Training hosted by DNI and SGA. or Class Councils Week, Sophomore Class began a new tradition this year, the “Halfway There Fair”. This fair brought together organizations, resources, and information geared towards sophomores -- with the intentions of educating about all the opportunities available to on campus so students can make the most of their time at FSU. As the need for career and leadership development becomes more important throughout the years, the Junior Class Council has most of their events focused on skills & workshops. During Class Councils Week, the Juniors put on a Resume Cafe in partnership with the Career Center. Representatives from the Career Center helped juniors & seniors applying for internships, graduate programs, and job/leadership positions perfect their resumes, while providing an engaging social & work space during midterms. Throughout the academic year, both the Sophomore & Junior Class Council will put on entertaining events to hold space for socializing, like “Family Feud: Sophomores vs Juniors”, “Trivia Nights” and “Finals Fuel”.
The Senior Class Council focuses most of their events on graduation & preparation for life post-grad. In January, Senior Class Council put on “100 Days ‘Til Graduation Fair” at the Integration Statue -- giving seniors a place to socialize, take celebratory photos, and get information from community partners about post-graduate resources. The Senior Class Council also puts on “Senior Send-off Week”. These events include the Senior Toast with President Thrasher & the Student Alumni Association, held this year at the Stadium Champions Club; Senior Market Wednesday (aka “10 Days Until Tina Jordan Graduation Celebration”); and Treasurer Taking Back Suwannee.

Alumni Relations Director
Cheyenne Grace-Watts Director of Social Entrepreneurship
We noticed that young student entrepreneurs did not have a place on campus to share business ideas or have full access to necessary resources. For this reason, the 66th Student Senate founded the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the spring of 2014. We are the go to spot on campus for small business owners and entrepreneurial students to further progress their business or idea. We strive each day to provide you with the most up-to-date information and best resources provided by FSU. Come join the great community of creative faculty and students.

As a graphic designer at SGA Student Publications, I learned valuable design techniques and skills by creating various print and digital marketing materials. In collaboration with the InternFSU program, I had the opportunity to set goals and reflect on the processes of creative exploration and growth, specifically my own particular taste, style, and production method. What I value the most about this work experience was the ability to contribute positively to my community alongside creative, passionate, supportive and like-minded peers.

ABOUT Allies & Safe Zones is an ally development program to promote acceptance and support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Pansexual, and Two-Spiritidentifying (LGBTQ+) people. Seminole Allies is coordinated through the offices of the Student Government Association at Florida State University and is offered regularly to the campus community. The program is open to all, regardless of orientation, identity, or expression. The Allies & Safe Zones re-launched in Fall 2013 as a new, more interactive program. If you attended a Safe Zone-Tallahassee workshop, we thank you for your continued support by inviting you to complete a Allies & Safe Zones 101 session to renew your commitment to being an ally.
100Level • ALLIES & SAFEZONES 101 A three-hour basic training in allyship and contemporary LGBTQ+ issues. Topics of discussion include: sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, current LGBTQ+ vocabulary, how to be an effective ally, and exploring further allyship possibilities.
200 Level • 201: TRANS ALLY A two-hour training that will engage participants in understanding trans identities, gender variance, socialized gender expectations, intersex identities, and becoming allies to people with trans and other gender variant identities. • 204: INTERSECTING IDENTITIES A two-hour workshop that will engage in better understanding the complex, at times conflicting, identities that intersect with an LGBTQ+ identity. Participants will discuss and reflect upon experiences and misconceptions of intersections between LGBTQ+ identities with other salient identities, including race, religion, geographic, and global. • 205: COMING OUT, FAMILY DYNAMICS, AND OTHER SUPPORT SYSTEMS Participants engage in learning about the ongoing process of coming out for LGBTQ+ individuals, the challenges/barriers associated with this process, and the benefits/lived experiences of being out. Also, participants engage in understanding how family dynamics play into a person’s lifelong coming out process, with a range of support levels. Join us to learn how to support someone who is coming out on campus and gather an understanding regarding how to navigate aspects of this journey.
300 Level • 301: TRAIN THE FACILITATOR Allies & Safe Zones 301: Train the Facilitator is a professional development for FSU Faculty and Staff to become co-facilitators for Allies & Safe Zones 101. We open applications during the Summer and Spring semester for new facilitators.

CORE BELIEFS We believe that SGA offers students hands-on, experiential, outside of the classroom learning. We believe that advising the students of SGA is a situational process of challenge and support. We believe that diversity of thoughts, ideas, and identities bring a richer, more educational dialogue to leadership and the campus community as a whole. We believe that all students have the potential to serve, lead, advocate on behalf of their peers, create change, and be positive financial stewards of their funds. We believe that students learn through engaging in the leadership process and that the limitless opportunities within SGA is a venue to practice that leadership and hone their skills.

Power of We Team
INNOVATION EXISTS AT THE INTERSECTIONS. In this charged, polarized climate, those intersections can be hard to find. Enter Power of WE - a historic student-led initiative under the Office of the President. Our agenda? Forging those intersections. WE curate spaces where people spanning the spectrum of politics and life experience can convene and collaborate rather than separate and isolate. WE aim to connect insights to divine answers to the pressing questions our society faces. WE aspire to co-create a culture of collaboration to stem the tides of polarization and bridge our deepening divides.
