Foundation and Organization Founded in 1916 as a department of Sacramento High School, Sacramento City College is the seventh oldest public community college in California and the oldest institution of higher learning in Sacramento. Sacramento City College has a proud history as a pioneer in the region for diversity, quality education, and community partnership. Rare for its time, SCC was founded by a woman (Belle Cooledge) and with an all female class as its first graduates, the college began with the spirit of inclusion at its very heart. First known as Sacramento Junior College, Cooledge founded the college to provide a safe, welcoming place for students to learn the basics for a college education, and to be a gathering spot for extra-curricular activities that would bring the community together. With this founding principle, Sacramento Junior College opened in 1916 on the top floor of Sacramento High School with 46 students and 16 part-time instructors. The college eventually gained its own campus at the corner of Sutterville and Freeport where it opened its doors to students in 1926. The campus consisted of just two buildings at the time. Thirty-eight years later, Sacramento City College separated from the Sacramento City Unified School District to join the newly organized Los Rios Junior College District Now known as the Los Rios Community College District, Sacramento City is one of four sister colleges in the greater Sacramento area. SCC has grown by leaps and bounds in many ways. Now, nearly 100 years later, SCC has certainly evolved with the times, but at its heart the college vision remains the same: to create a learning community that celebrates diversity, nurtures personal growth, and inspires academic and economic leadership.

Panthers Coaching Staff Derek begins his sixth season as the Head Coach of the Panthers, and his 14th year overall as a member of the Panther coaching staff. In addition to his coaching duties, he also teaches full-time in the Kinesiology, Health, and Athletics Division. In his five years as the head coach, Coach Sullivan has had 63 players transfer to four-year universities. Twenty Sac City student-athletes have arrived on campus to play for NCAA D1 schools, including Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Miami, UC Irvine, Utah, New Mexico, Fresno State, San Jose State, Campbell, Cal State Northridge, Incarnate Word, Eastern Kentucky, Central Arkansas, and UC Davis. Another 21 transferred to play at NCAA D2 and D3 schools, including Chico State, Sonoma State, Nova Southeastern, Eastern New Mexico, CSU East Bay, Texas-Permian Basin, Stanislaus State, La Verne, Azusa Pacific, CSU Monterey Bay, and Willamette. Deciding to play for the Coach Sullivan and the Panthers goes beyond having a desire to win. Having a commitment to prepare for the next level, both on the field and off, is a huge part of becoming a “Sac City Guy”. For three summers, “Sully” served as field manager for the Easton SSC Cats, partnering with Panther assistant coach Drew Henning to run the development-based, travel ball program with the Sacramento Sports Center and Easton Baseball. It has grown into one of the pre-eminent summer programs in Northern California. Over the 2011 and 2012 summers, Derek was a part of the Chatham A’s coaching staff in the Cape Cod League. He followed in the footsteps of former SCC head coach Andy McKay, and current SCC pitching coach Deskaheh Bomberry, who both coached for Chatham for longtime skipper John Schiffner. The Cape serves as college baseball’s premier summer league, attracting the best amateur players in the country. Derek began his coaching career in the summer of 2004 with the Bayside (NY) Yankees. His on-field duties included running the offense and coaching third base for one of the premier Connie Mack programs on the East Coast. One former player was Pittsburgh Pirates #1 overall pick Pedro Alvarez. In the summer of 2005, he coached with the Lafayette (CA) Generals and assumed the same on-field duties for one of Northern California’s best summer baseball programs. He returned to the coach for the Panthers after playing for SCC and Hall of Fame coach, Andy McKay, in 2001 and 2002, reaching the Final Four in both years. He transferred to St. John’s University in Queens, NY for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, where he played for ABCA Hall of Fame coach, Ed Blankmeyer. As a member of the Red Storm, Derek was a utility infielder and played in the 2004 NCAA Stanford Regional. A graduate of Woodcreek High School, Sacramento City College (A.A.), St. John’s University (B.A.) and Sacramento State University (M.B.A.), Derek now lives in Natomas with his wife, Nicole, and children, Abigail, McKenna and Kellen.

Panthers Coaching Staff Assistant Coach - Deskaheh Bomberry “Bomber” begins his 20th season as a Panther assistant. Since coming to SCC, 49 pitchers have transferred to NCAA Division 1 universities, 17 have signed professional contracts, and 4 have reached the Major Leagues. At Sac City, Bomber is responsible for all aspects of pitching staff development and coordinates the Panthers’ recruiting. In 2000, Deskaheh was an assistant coach for the Chatham Athletics of the Cape Cod Collegiate League. Eight players from that team went on to play in the Major Leagues. Deskaheh has spent the last three summers assisting USA Baseball with the selection of the 18U national team. Deskaheh began his collegiate coaching career in 1996 at Eastern Kentucky University. At EKU, Bomber was responsible for the development of the pitching staff and coordinated their recruiting efforts. Bomber played two seasons at Cosumnes River College. Following his CRC career, he transferred to Sonoma State and played two seasons. Bomber has a BA from Sonoma State in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in physical education from Eastern Kentucky University. Bomber is a full-time instructor at SCC. He and his wife, Rosanne, live in East Sacramento with their daughter, Ryan.

Assistant Coach - Pete Pryor Pete is in his 15th season with the Panthers. He played at SCC in 1993-94, two teams that both ﬁnished second in the state tournament. The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Pete after his stint at SCC, but he chose to go to the University of Kentucky and play for Keith Madison. After two seasons as a Wildcat, Pete signed with the Chicago White Sox and played two minor-league seasons. He returned to Kentucky and earned a master’s degree. Pete is married (Kara) with two children (Luke & Hazel).

Assistant Coach - Drew Henning Drew Henning currently is in his 10th year with the Panthers. Drew joined the staff after graduating and playing on the SCC state runner up team in 2006. Drew will be serving as the third base coach this year as well as coaching the catchers. The previous seven years Drew has been helping Coach Bomberry with the pitching duties. Drew’s experience also includes having been the primary pitching coordinator for the Sac City Baseball Camps, Freshman High School Head Coach and Head Coach for the SSC Easton Cats Summer team comprised of area high school players. Drew currently serves as Director of Baseball Operations at Sacramento Sports Center. He is a graduate of Christian Brothers High School.

Assistant Coach - Lynn Black Lynn, a native of Levittown, Pennsylvania, relocated to Sacramento in 1975 and begins his 3rd season as a Panther assistant coach. He will coach the inﬁelders and assist with the base runners. Lynn played in the Babe Ruth and American Legion World Series for Levittown ﬁnishing second both times. Lynn was a shortstop for the Panthers in 1975 and 1976, playing for SCC Hall of Fame coach, Jerry Weinstein. After hitting .441 in 1976, Lynn signed a contract with the San Diego Padres and played two years in the Padres organization. Coach Black was a varsity assistant coach at Christian Brothers High School from 2006-2015 and the past four summers has assisted with the Easton Cats development-based travel ball program with the Sacramento Sports Center and Easton Baseball. Lynn has two daughters, Summer and Ashley, both graduates of Christian Brothers High School and the University of California San Diego and Davis respectively. Lynn is retired and resides in the Pocket Area of Sacramento with his wife of 38 years, Tina. He enjoys traveling with Tina and reading in his spare time.

Panthers Coaching Staff Assistant Coach - Matt Sturges Matt begins his 6th season as a Sacramento City College assistant coach. He is a former lefthanded pitcher for the Panthers baseball team (2010-2012). In addition to coaching for one of the most prestigious college programs in the country, Sturges is also the Manager of the 13U and 15U SSC baseball teams. Matt graduated from Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove (his hometown). He spends some of his free time helping out at clinics for Youth Baseball Leagues all around Sacramento, coaching at the S.C.C. Baseball Camps and providing private baseball instructional lessons. He has served as an instructor for the Under Armor Top 96 camps, which operate throughout California. Matt will serve as the ﬁrst base coach for the Panthers this season; overseeing of all charting duties, helping with the pitching staff and the left handed runner control game.

Assistant Coach - Bo Henning Bo begins his 3rd season as a Panther assistant. Bo’s duties consist of coaching the outﬁelders, assisting with the hitters and recruiting. Prior to Sac City Bo was the head coach of the Christian Brothers High School Falcons Junior Varsity baseball team in 2015 and the Freshman team in 2014. Those teams combined for a record of 43-5. Prior to his coaching career, Bo pitched for the Panthers in 2011 and 2012. He played one year of Professional baseball in 2013 for the Vallejo Admirals. Bo also pitched in the Northwoods Summer College Baseball League in the summer of 2012. Prior to playing baseball, Bo received a basketball scholarship out of high school from Cal Poly where he played for two years. Bo works full time at the Sacramento Sports Center where he is the Director of Baseball and a performance trainer. He also coaches in the summer for the Sacramento Easton Cats 17 and under team. Bo has received his bachelor’s degree of Organization Communications at Sacramento State University. Bo is one of four family members to attend and play baseball at Sacramento City College, along with his brother (Drew),uncle (Dennis), and dad (Rich). He is also the younger brother of current Panther assistant coach Drew Henning.

Assistant Coach - Al Leyva Coach Al is in his 2nd year at Sacramento City College. Prior to joining the Panthers he spent the past two seasons at Mt. San Antonio College as their hitting and 3rd base coach. This will be his second summer as head coach of the Newport Gulls Summer Collegiate Baseball team that competes in the NECBL. Prior to becoming head coach of the Gulls, he served as an assistant coach for 3 seasons where he also was the hitting and 3rd base coach. He has also been an assistant coach for several other teams in the NECBL since 2003. His coaching career ofﬁcially started back in 2002 as the head coach at Claremont High School, where he spent 4 seasons. From 2006 to 2008, he was an assistant coach at the University of La Verne as their inﬁeld and 3rd base coach. In the summer of 2007, Al was an assistant coach with the Chicago White Sox Rookie Ball team (Bristol Sox). After 3 season at the university level, he returned to the high school ranks as head coach of Damien High School, where he stayed until joining the Mt. SAC program. Al has been married for 29 years to his wife, Connie. Together, they have twin daughters, Jessie and Allie (son-in-law John).

State Championship Gallery 1951 State Champions The Panthers of 1951 won the ﬁrst baseball state championship in SJC history with a season record of 29-3. The team, which was coached by Jack Woerner, had a 19-game winning streak that included a 14-1 defeat of the University of California. “Pete Vartanian was named team MVP; Jerry Kaeser was named the team’s outstanding player; and catcher John McNamara was the team captain. McNamara became a major league manager for 16 years, his career highlighted a World Series appearance in 1986 as manager of the Boston Red Sox. Pitcher Tony Stathos had a 12-0 record and won the title-clinching game by a score of 7-5 over El Camino Junior College.

1953 State Champions Jack Woerner led the Panthers to their second championship in 3 years as the team posted a 25-5 record. J.C. Masters pitched the Panthers to a play-off victory for the league title to advance to the state play-offs. Grant Tech (now American River) fell to the Panthers 15-0 and 5-2 as SJC captured the Nor Cal championship, as Masters pitched a 2-hitter and hit a home run in the opener and the team stole 13 bases. After losing the opener of the state championship, the Panthers came from behind twice to defeat Long Beach City College in a doubleheader to win the ﬁnal series. Center ﬁelder Norman Coons led the team in RBI, runs scored, hits, home runs, triples, and stolen bases in being named the team MVP. Masters was 11-1 with 79 strikeouts in 78 innings.

5-Time State Champions 1988 State Champions Weinstein’s Panthers captured the third state championship after going through the loser’s bracket at the state tournament and defeating top-ranked Rancho Santiago twice to win the title. The Panthers ﬁnished 46-10 and were led by CNC Player of the Year F.P. Santangelo, who led the state with 45 stolen bases. Santangelo currently plays for the San Francisco Giants. On April 28, 1988, the Panthers won the ﬁrst game played in partially completed Union Stadium, clinching their eighth straight CNC championship. Weinstein was named National Community College Coach of the Year.

1998 State and National Champions The 1998 Panther baseball team posted a dominating record of 44-2 in winning the second state championship under Jerry Weinstein and the fourth in school history. 1999 State Champions The 1999 team completed the rare repeat when first-year coach Andy McKay guided the Panthers after Coach Weinstein resigned to take a job with the L.A. Dodgers organization. After sweeping through the playoffs, the team found itself needing to win the final 2 games to claim the championship. After winning the first gane, SCC trailed by one run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the final. After telling McKay that he was going to win a championship, shortstop Joe Thurston smacked a 2-run double with 2 outs for the come-from-behind win, and the Panthers were able to dogpile for the second straight year.
