Foundation and Organization Founded in 1916 as a department of Sacramento High School, Sacramento City College is the seventh oldest public community college in California and the oldest institution of higher learning in Sacramento. Sacramento City College has a proud history as a pioneer in the region for diversity, quality education, and community partnership. Rare for its time, SCC was founded by a woman (Belle Cooledge) and with an all-female class as its first graduates, the college began with the spirit of inclusion at its very heart. First known as Sacramento Junior College, Cooledge founded the college to provide a safe, welcoming place for students to learn the basics for a college education, and to be a gathering spot for extra-curricular activities that would bring the community together. With this founding principle, Sacramento Junior College opened in 1916 on the top floor of Sacramento High School with 46 students and 16 part-time instructors. The college eventually gained its own campus at the corner of Sutterville and Freeport where it opened its doors to students in 1926. The campus consisted of just two buildings at the time. Thirty-eight years later, Sacramento City College separated from the Sacramento City Unified School District to join the newly organized Los Rios Junior College District, now known as the Los Rios Community College District, Sacramento City is one of four sister colleges in the greater Sacramento area. SCC has grown by leaps and bounds in many ways. Now, nearly 100 years later, SCC has certainly evolved with the times, but at its heart the college vision remains the same: to create a learning community that celebrates diversity, nurtures personal growth, and inspires academic and economic leadership.

2020 Panthers Coaching Staff Head Coach - Tim Kiernan
Coach Kiernan enters his 39th year at Sacramento City College. Coach Kiernan has coached several sports including softball for 27 years. Coach TK has also Coached A.S.A. travel teams along with 6 years of coaching in the W.P.S.L. and N.P.F. Women’s Professional Teams. He is the only active C.C.C.A.A. softball Coach in the Hall of Fame. He has helped over 300 student athletes receive four year college scholarships. including schools like UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, UNLV, South Carolina, California, Texas Tech, Texas
A&M, Cal State Fullerton, CSUS, CSUN, and Liberty University. Coach Kiernan has won 23 conference championships as a head Coach at Sacramento City College. Coach Kiernan’s teams have appeared in 24 state championships, winning 4 titles and having 7 runner-up finishes. Coach Kiernan has a 1082-247 softball coaching record at Sacramento City College including 3 State Championships and 1 National Championship. He has coached 80 Community College All-Americans, 10 Division I and 13 Division II All-Americans. He has had 7 former Panther players in the College World Series. His teams have won over fifty-seven community softball tournaments. Coach Kiernan has 19 A.S.A. National Championship appearances with a Championship in 1994. He has a 2962 and 340 record as an ASA Coach. He has spoken at many softball clinics throughout the world and has coached US teams in Canada, Australia and Italy Coach Kiernan has an A.A. Degree from American River College, a B.S. Degree from Central Michigan University and a M.A. Degree from Central Michigan University.
Assistant Coach - Rich Moore This is Coach Moore’s 8th season with the Panthers. He brings extensive experience that goes with more than 25 years of coaching softball, much of it at the high school level. He coached for 15 years at Del Oro and Ponderosa high schools. His teams won many conference and CIF section titles during his tenure. Many of his other teams advanced to section tournament action. Coach Moore has been involved in ASA softball for more than two decades, and has coached many teams in the ASA Nationals. His best finish was as a runner-up with his 18-U team. He has helped 6 nearly 100 student-athletes advance to college level athletics and education.

2020 Panthers Coaching Staff Assistant Coach - Julie Pederson
Coach Pederson joined the SCC coaching staff in 2013. She is a 1991 graduate of Cordova High School, where she was a four-year varsity player. During high school, Julie also played for the Blue darters travel softabll program. Coach Pederson played for SCC in 1992-93, as a catcher/first baseman. Both teams won their conference championship, and the 1992 team won the state tournament and was named National Champions. In 1994, Julie earned an athletic scholarship to Florida Southern University in Lakeland, where she played for NFCA Hall of Fame coach Chris Bellotto. During her two seasons with the Lady Moccasins, both teams participated in postseason play. In 1995, she was named to the Sunshine State Conference 2nd team performer as a catcher. She earned a B.A. in Criminology. In 2009, Coach Pederson began coaching the JV team at St. Francis High School in Sacramento. She moved up to varsity coach in 2010, and spent three years at the helm of the program. She has also coached the 16-U and 18-U California Rapids travel team.
Assistant Coach - Joe Spatafore
Joe Spatafore started as the Head Softball Coach at Kennedy H.S. in 2001. In his 3rd year the Cougars made their first playoff appearance in 17 years. In 2006, he left Kennedy to coach Loretto H.S. In 2012 Spatafore was asked to return as the Kennedy Softball coach and the Cougars immediately returned to the playoffs. The Cougars made the CIF Playoffs 5 of the previous 6 seasons under Spatafore, including 2017 when the Cougars shared the school’s 1st Metro Conference title in 35 years. His career high school record as a head coach is 161-116-3. Coach Spatafore is a teacher of the sport and takes pride in developing his players for the next level. Over the years he has many of his HS players go on to college programs. He has also watched many additional players go on to play in college during his 10+ years with the California Rapids 18 Gold and the California Gold Rush 18’s. He was the Rapids 18u Gold co-head coach and coordinator of their college preparatory program. He also served as the head coach of the Gold Rush.
Assistant Coach - Megan Winton
This is Coach Winton’s 5th year assisting the Sac City Panthers. She will coach the outfielders and be responsible for the conditioning as well as coach 1st base on game days.

State Championship Gallery 1988 State Champions This title cost Coach Tim Kiernan his mustache. He was true to his word that if the Panthers won their first state title (after four second-place finishes in five years), he would shave off the stuff above his lip. And hours after the final out, Kiernan was sheared. Charlene Manley pitched her fourth consecutive shutout and the Panthers pushed across a run in the fifth inning to beat Palomar 1-0 in Hayward to cap a 44-6 season. Manley allowed only 10 hits in the tournament sweep and was named Most Valuable Player. Manley allowed only two first-inning hits in the finale. She was one of seven starters who returned for another shot at the title, after SCC had finished second in 1987. The defense, anchored by Shannon Padovan and Shelly Suwa, was superb. Catcher Melinda Garcia and first baseman Dawnielle King were elected to the all-state team and Margie McCune drove in the only run of the state final game. Manley won 34 games that season, tied for best single-season total in SCC history, and she had a 0.08 ERA. Nicki Dennis led the team with 10 home runs, 16 doubles and 56 RBI. Padovan had 18 sacrifices. The All-Americans that season included Dennis, Manley and Padovan.
1988 State Championship Team - 30th Anniversary Reunion 1992 State Champions No team in state history ever boasted of such dominating pitching ... and not with just one hurler. SCC had the ideal 1-2 punch to punch out the competition with Amy Windmiller and Kim Gonzalez. Windmiller went 27-1 and Gonzo went 26-2 as SCC rolled to a school record 54 wins and 3 losses, including four wins at Sacramento Softball Complex to take its second title. Fittingly, Windmiller set the SCC record with a numbing 365 strikeouts. Gonzalez is second all-time with 187. Windmiller had a 0.07 ERA that spring, tops all time at SCC, and Gonzalez is tied for second at 0.08. Windmiller allowed only four earned runs all season and beat Palomar 4-1 in the state finale. She struck out 10 and went 3-0 in the state tournament, with Gonzalez winning the other game. Windmiller tossed a no-hitter against Palomar in a 3-0 win earlier in the tournament. All told, Windmiller had 10 no hitters and five perfect games. And when she took the day off, Gonzo took over and blew away the competition. The defense was anchored by Vicky Rios, who had 64 hits and scored 50 runs. Becky Burroughs set an SCC record with10 triples. First baseman Stephanie Acton and catcher Beth Gerkin also had superb seasons.
1996 State Champions More pitching, more hitting, and more defense equaled another state title for the Panthers. SCC again featured a powerful 1-2 pitching combo with Cheri Shinn and Sarah Ayers, and the Panthers fielded perhaps their most deadly lineup as three players drove in 47 or more runs. The Panthers set a school record for wins and finished with one of the best marks in state history at 59-4. Two losses to Solano in the regular season served as the wake-up call SCC needed, and the Panthers roared through the playoffs, winning all 8 games and the state championship against Fullerton at Ohlone College. Shinn went 29-2 with a 0.59 ERA. Ayers was 13-0 with a 0.08 ERA, which is tied for second best on the all-time SCC list. Shinn was one of five All-Americans. In addition to her mound dominance, she hit .369, with four homer and 49 RBI. All-American infielder Laura Redding hit .402 with 54 RBI, tied for fourth best on the all-time SCC list. All-American third baseman Kim Martinez hit .367 with 30 RBI after leading the state in scoring in basketball, where she was also an All-American. All-American Londyn Ray hit .360 with 47 RBI and tied the SCC single season record with 10 HR. Denise Jackson, and All-American in volleyball and softball, hit .333 with 31 RBI and four homers. Each of the All-Americans earned scholarships to four-year institutions.

They’ve done it again! After missing the state championship by one game in the 2003 season, SCC had its redemption. The Panthers went on two winning streaks, 17-0 and 27-0, to finish out their 2004 season 44-2 as Bay Valley Conference and California State Champions. All-American Nikki Cinque led the Panthers pitching staff with a 25-1 record and 0.32 ERA. She was honored as Most Valuable Player for the BVC, State Pitcher of the Year and Most Valuable Player of the State Championships. No. 2 pitcher Krystina Gomez went 15-1 for the season, with a 0.63 ERA. Gomez, who threw the final pitch for the Panthers in their 3-1 championship win over Cypress College, was honored as Most valuable Pitcher of the State Championships. Eight individuals batted over .400 for the season, including Wendy Salgo (.495), Mandi Salcido (.464), Gomez (.455), Cinque (.443), Tony Rodriguez (.443), Elisha Reed (.429), Iris Mendoza (.417), and Traci Bender (.408). The defense was locked down by All-American infielders Slago and Bender, who had a combined total of 60 RBI and 80 hits. Salcido also had a stellar season with 24 RBI and 52 hits. In league play, SCC scored 305 runs and allowed only 37. In guiding the team to the state championship, head coach Robert Maglione was honored as the recipient of the 2004 California Community College Coach of the Year award.
