Finals’ Review Committee To Encourage a Joint Review Effort of the 2014-2015 Finals’ Schedule Change Whereas,
“The Student Government of Loyola Chicago, hereafter referred to as the SGLC, is a strengthened representation of the Loyola University Chicago undergraduate student body”1, and
Whereas,
It is the mission of the SGLC to “Voice the concerns of the student body, to act as an instrument for the cooperation of students, faculty, and administration,” and “To provide an open forum for the dialogue and a voice for student opinions”2, and
Whereas,
The spring 2015 final exam schedule is a condensed version of the previous final exam schedule, and
Whereas,
The condensed schedule reduces available preparation time, and
Whereas,
No data has provided significant evidence that the new final exam schedule will prove more beneficial to the academic success and health of students than the previous exam schedule, and
Whereas,
The efficacy of finals’ week holds great consequence for students, staff, and faculty, and
Whereas,
Currently no formal body exists to determine the success of the new final exam schedule, and
Whereas,
A party affected by a policy or an event holds the right to review such an item, and
Whereas,
Under our shared governance structure, Loyola University Chicago commonly utilizes teams of students, staff, and faculty in governance decisions, and
Therefore,
Be it resolved that the SGLC requests that the Provost convene a committee to be called the Finals’ Review Committee (FRC) in June 2015 to review the efficacy of the 2015 finals, and
Therefore,
Be it resolved that the SGLC requests that the committee review the efficacy of the final exam schedule based on at least the following criteria: 1.
The academic success of students
2.
The health and wellbeing of students
Therefore,
Be it resolved that the SGLC strongly recommends that the committee be composed of students, staff, and faculty at a 1:1:1 ratio.
Therefore,
Be it finally resolved that the SGLC asks that the review from the FRC be the primary advice considered when deciding whether or not the finals exam schedule will exist in the same format in the future.
