SGLC NEWSLETTER
The Student Government of Loyola Chicago
Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015
Dear Campus Partners,
EXECUTIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Thank you for taking the time to read our first SGLC newsletter! Although Chicago’s fifth-largest blizzard is behind us, the copious amounts of slippery slush and snow outside might make you think otherwise. Nevertheless, it is my hope that this bi-weekly newsletter will serve as an opportunity to warm both your hearts and your souls as we shed light on some of the wonderful initiatives that the Student Government of Loyola Chicago is working on. From a student standpoint, I know that the second semester of each academic year can often feel like a blur. With so many application deadlines and various opportunities opening up each week, by the time that most students settle into their classes, it is already time to roll out the red carpet for the spring graduation ceremonies. With this in mind, second semester in SGLC is even more fast-paced with our spring election packets being made available in only a few short weeks. Looking back at the four-pillar

platform that Michael and I ran on a year ago, I am proud of the progress that SGLC has made. Yet, as the mantra has been all year long, we’ve still got a long way to go! From the Magis Scholarship Initiative to further support undocumented students, to our continued advocacy for the Jesuit Just Employment Policy, to the 3rd Annual Zero Waste game that we’ll be hosting when the Men’s basketball team takes on #14 Northern Iowa, I hope that each of you takes the time this spring semester to not only learn more about our exciting initiatives, but to be involved with them as well. In Maroon & Gold, Flavio G. Bravo
As we begin the new semester we wanted to highlight all the accomplishments from the Fall: • State of the Student Address, in October, Pres. Bravo and VP Fasullo brought it back it back to campus • Cookies with Jane Neufeld, these bi-weekly meetings give students the opportunity to meet and talk with the VP of Student Development • Textbook Affordability Legislation, To encourage the careful consideration of textbook cost • Creating a Chief Community Relations Officer, Maura Rocks, CCRO, has begun fostering the partnership between the Loyola community and our Rogers Park/Edgewater neighbors. • The Magis Scholarship Fund, supports undocumented undergraduate students Executive is still working hard to continue and complete spring initiatives: Student Storage Space, Textbook Affordability, Letter to the Accreditors, Board of Trustees Luncheon, and the Magis Scholarship Referendum.
SGLC COMMITTEE UPDATES ALLOCATIONS
ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
FACILITIES & TRANSPORTATION
The committee held SPOT 1 hearings in January. The committee received over 70 budget requests. Allocations was able to fund 87% of the requested budget. Appeals were due on Tuesday. Senate will hear any appeals this Tuesday, February 10th. Allocations continues to host open houses prior to budget request deadlines. The Student Organization can also be found online at luc.edu/saga among other resources for RSO’s and SSO’s.
Senator Bosnich created a Finals Review Committee Act that was passed at senate on Tuesday. Bosnich intends to present the act to Provost to ensure this committee is established. The committee would review the efficacy of the finals schedule based on the academic success of students and the health and well being of students. Bosnich recommends that the committee be composed of students, staff, and faculty at a 1:1:1 ratio.
Senator Torress met with Nick Memisovski, Campus Transportation, to share an 8-Ride proposal draft. The intent of the new proposal is to make 8-Ride a route service opposed to its current function as a call service. There would be four separate routes under this proposal and would span from Touhy to Thorndale and west to Clark. The committee is continuing to meet with Dawn Collins, Student Complex, to finalize details of student storage.

The next steps in the Just Leasing and Trade Project is to deliver results of the survey to interested parties in the community. Currently connecting with Unite 1, union that works with Aramark, to focus on applying the standards of the Jesuit Just Employment Policy to the work that is being done on the hotel. A just hotel campaign. In continuing the conversation around “Hands Up Don’t Shoot,” Justice is looking to bring in community speakers from We Charge Genocide to campus.
