A publication of the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity

In concert with Habitat’s Brush With Kindness program, and as part of the bank’s community reinvestment program, JP Morgan Chase Bank (“Chase”) donated a 5-unit apartment building (on Elmira Street in Pasadena) to SGV Habitat for Humanity. Currently, there are five families who reside in the apartments, and Habitat’s goal is to improve upon the buildings and make them decent, yet still affordable, living spaces. This property is one of the largest single donations ever received by SGV Habitat, and when the rehab work is finished and the buildings sold to a new owner, net proceeds will help build more homes and touch even more lives. “This was a wonderful opportunity to come in and do what we do best, improve the lives of these folks, and generate cash that will go into our next build,” says Paul McAnnally-Linz, who is heading up the Elmira rehabilitation

while he is on a year-long social service leave from Xerox to help advance SGV Habitat for Humanity’s affordable housing work. The goal of the renovation process is to complete improvements on the property very quickly (within a year). SGV Habitat chose to do the exterior renovation of the front house first to improve the appearance of not only the building, but the neighborhood as well. Prepping, priming, coating, and painting were done in under a month and can be seen in the photos above. Structure repair, replacement of some windows, and repair of the fence were also completed in the first phase of the repairs. SGV Habitat’s Board of Directors extends sincere thanks and gratitude for this Chase property donation and also for the Chase Corporate Team Build Days when bank employees came out to help complete needed

August 2011

repairs. Everyone had a great time, including local volunteers and some of the tenants who also took part in the renovation efforts. Although the appearance of the front house and landscaping is much improved, there is still a lot of work ahead. A schedule is being put together for renovation of the apartment interiors, as well as the exterior of the back unit and garages. Please contact Amy Borton at 626-387-6899 x17 if you’d like to join in and help maximize this donation. Low-income homeowners who have not been financially able to make needed exterior repairs are invited to inquire about Brush With Kindness by calling Damien Allen, 626-230-8917. OUR RESTORES Customer Review ReStore customers are invited to share their experiences. Recently, a regular ReStore shopper from San Gabriel told about the first time he came into the ReStore and why he keeps coming back: I must have driven by the Habitat ReStore dozens of times before I finally stopped and went inside. I noticed someone carrying a screen door out to a truck so I thought I would check it out because I needed a screen door. I thought I would find old building materials, but I was amazed. In addition to old windows and doors, they had NEW ones. They had window air conditioners, stoves, Simpson framing hardware, toilets, a table saw, new kitchen cabinets, door hardware, deadbolts and a lot of nice lamps for dining rooms. They also had electrical and plumbing supplies and a really good assortment of nuts and bolts. Most of the items are used, probably donated by building contractors, but some of the materials are new. It has been really great for me since I have an older house and a tight budget. I usually check out the Restore to see if they have what I need before I go to the “big box store. The ReStore is closer, the prices are better, and the proceeds go to a good cause. If you would like to learn more about what merchandise the ReStores carry or how to donate, you can check our website at www.sgvhabitat.org/restore or call the Azusa store at 626-387-6900 or the Pasadena store at 626-792-3838.

SWEAT EQUITY Learning the Trade: The Geneva Build

“We started [our sweat equity] when they laid the foundation,” Elena Benitez beamed as she shared the work she has done on her future home on Geneva Street in Glendale. At SGV Habitat for Humanity, all homeowners are required to complete at least 500 hours of sweat equity, the labor they physically expend working on their Habitat home and the homes of their neighbors. To date, the Benitez family has completed almost half of their required hours, but Elena insists they don’t keep track. “It’s wonderful! It’s a requirement, but we don’t mind doing it. On Monday night my husband is already excited to go work on Tuesday.” Homeowner Shane Mulholland also values the time he gets to spend on the construction site. Working on these houses is his first real experience with manual labor. “It’s really cool to work with the older guys—the regulars—and the companies that volunteer. We get to learn little bits of the trade,” Shane elaborated. When asked how she feels about

this house, Mrs. Benitez replied wearing a bright smile, “For me, it’s like I won the lottery, only better, because I get to work on it, and I won so many relationships with the other families and volunteers. When I see them and work with them it’s like we’ve known each other for a long time.” Shane also remarked on his experience, “There’s definitely a lot

more meaning in the sense of living in a place you helped build. It’s cool to think I’m building the home my kids will grow up in.” Brittany Bailey, Faith Relations Intern, Guest Writer

Brush With Kindness Opportunities . . . You, your business or your place of worship can sponsor all or part of a Brush With Kindness (BWK) for an eligible low-income household in the San Gabriel Valley. You, your colleagues, your family, or your place of worship can also recommend eligible lowincome homeowners for a Brush With Kindness. Just email me with contact information and a brief summary of the exterior repairs needed: ed@sgvhabitat.org. You and your sponsoring group will have priority if you want to come out during the BWK work to meet your family and help with the repair labor. Volunteering at the BWK site is not required by sponsors, but many groups enjoy the fellowship and team building of working together to do something good for a deserving low-income homeowner struggling to

make needed exterior home repairs.

for your continued support . . .

Each BWK is unique. All BWK projects improve the safety and appearance of a home owned by a low-income family. Typically, BWK repairs cost between $5,000 and $10,000. Several sponsors can join together if the amount a single sponsor can donate is less than the full amount needed.

LifeSource, for not only donating water for the Geneva Groundbreaking Ceremony, but also for supplying purified drinking water for the volunteers throughout the build. SunGreen Systems, for donating solar systems for our first ever green build on Geneva Street in Glendale.

BWK improves neighborhoods and communities and helps individual homeowners to regain pride of ownership and preserve property values throughout the neighborhood. All able-bodied household members are required to put in at least eight hours of “sweat equity” working alongside other volunteers.

Barry Storch, Dilbeck Realtors Donna Baker, Director of Heritage Homes Van-Martin Rowe Design landscape. architecture. interior Xerox, for allowing Paul McAnnally-Linz to play pivotal roles at our BWK, Elmira, and Geneva sites.

Thank you for considering BWK. Get involved today! You’ll be glad you did!
