Baldwin Park Welcomes Habitat Homeowners

The completion of a Habitat for Humanity project is culminated with a celebration of the home(s) and ceremonial handing over the keys to the new firsttime homebuyers. On April 18, 2024 SGV Habitat held a dedication event in Baldwin Park to commemorate two households becoming new homeowners.

"This here is the dream. Now I can hang up pictures and there is no landlord to tell me, you can't put a nail there." -Tammy, homeowner

Tammy is a single mother who recently purchased and moved into the properties existing home –which needed minor repairs that were completed by SGV Habitat.

Kiana, a 26 year-old Baldwin Park native, purchased the newly constructed home on the back lot

This property is the first where SGV Habitat was able to use SB9, known as the California Housing Opportunity and More Efficiency (HOME) Act. This new law enabled the single-family residential property to be split into two lots. What was a former garage for one of the homes was turned into a one bedroom, one bathroom home on the back lot.

The SGV Habitat affordable homeownership opportunity is life-changing for these households. Thank you to the city of Baldwin Park for making this possible.

"I see in my future that with an affordable home I'll be financially stable and in turn, I'll avoid neglecting my basic needs,” says Kiana “It is truly a dream come true to have this opportunity for safety, stability and happiness! I give all my gratitude to SGV Habitat for Humanity!”

STRONGWOMENBUILDSTRONGCOMMUNITIES

in memory of Rosalynn Carter

San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity celebrated Women Build in honor of Women’s History Month.

This signature event included over 6 weeks of activities coordinated in memory of Rosalynn Carter, and raised a record breaking $220,000 to support families in need of affordable homeownership

East West Bank returned this year as a lead sponsor for the event, where hundreds of women and their allies came together to build homes and highlight the importance of homeownership for women in their struggle to achieve economic equity

Women, especially those who serve as head of their families and women of color, disproportionately face obstacles that make accessing decent, affordable housing seem impossible.

Stable, affordable homeownership is transformative for low- income families.

“Our goal is to empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence,” says Faith Mellinger, Director of Marketing, Communications and Engagement.

“At Habitat, we have the unique ability to provide opportunities for this with hands-on learning, and, when offered the right tools, women can succeed in changing their communities.”

Statistics show children with stable housing have higher success rates in school. Homeownership is associated with better health, fewer

illnesses, and lower rates of depression. Women Build gives women an opportunity to change the status quo and make a lasting impact

To date, this event has helped house families in Azusa, Glendale, Pasadena, Monterey Park, Baldwin Park, Monrovia and throughout the San Gabriel Valley through volunteering, donations, and advocacy

Framing the Future of San Gabriel Valley

Over the next three years, you will help change the lives of 200 families throughout 31 communities.

SGV Habitat recently announced a new campaign, Framing the Future, which will bring people together to build homes, communities and hope in your local neighborhoods. This campaign highlights the immense need for affordable places to live and celebrates the diverse ways SGV Habitat is finding solutions to our local housing crisis – through increasing housing production, affordable home preservation and sustainable practices such as operating resale stores to keep materials out of landfills

Through new and rehabbed homes, we are looking to double the number of families served with the last campaign (Expanding the American Dream). Over the next few years new first-time homebuyer projects will include:

Currently Under Construction

Angeleno – Azusa

A fourplex is being built in Azusa, marking the first SGV Habitat new construction project in the city. These four houses will include first-time homebuyer opportunities for a Veteran and a very-low income household in addition to offering an accessible home

Stewart – Baldwin Park

The first adaptive re-use project for our affiliate includes transforming a former church and school building into 15 opportunities for first-time homebuyers in the City of Baldwin Park. This is only possible through the partnership with Baldwin Park and the San Gabriel Presbytery.

Many Locations – El Sereno

$100 $250 $500 $

SGV Habitat is among a small list of organizations that have been awarded the opportunity to transform former Caltrans properties into new opportunities for affordable housing in El Sereno Our plan is to renovate and/or build single-family homes that fit both the character and density of the neighborhood and the incomes of working people.

Bresee – Baldwin Park

(see story on cover)

This project was an opportunity for two households to become first-time homebuyers Using SB9, a new law that has enabled us to split what was one single family lot into two, the home that already existed on the front of the lot was rehabbed. The garage at the back of the property was converted into a single-family residence for our first household of 1 as we provide what would be considered a “starter home” to the underserved homebuyers “under 30 (Young Professionals).”
