A few years ago, Brenda found an item for one of her children on a popular buy/sell group and ventured to make the purchase. Upon meeting the seller at their home a friendly conversation ensued between the two women about their families. Brenda expressed that her one bedroom, one bath back house was extremely small for their familyof 5but after years of searchingfor a home, their efforts were thwarted due to the outrageous cost of housing. The woman shared that she was able to purchase her home through the SGV Habitathomeownershipprogram.

Brenda immediately researched SGV Habitat and learned that the homeownership application deadline was quickly approaching. In February 2020 Brenda and her husband Gerardo successfully submitted their application. In March 2020 Covid-19 shut down all SGV Habitat construction. “The day that Laura (Director of Programs at SGV Habitat) called to tell us that our application was accepted I cried with joy, and I haven’t stopped crying since,” Brenda said, tears in her eyes remembering the day. “We kept praying and praying. It was such an overwhelming and amazing feeling,” Brenda continuedhervoicebreakingwithemotion.
After being accepted into the SGV Habitat homeownership program, Brenda and Gerardo, for the first time felt that the dream of owning their own home would become a reality. Homeownership means that BrendaandGerardowillfinallyhavethesecurityandstabilitytheyhavedesiredforsomanyyears.
“I’m looking forward to having my own room and space, ” Brenda shared, “But what I look forward to the most is being able to cook dinner together with my family in a kitchen that is not cramped, and in an oven that is standard sized.” she continued. “Right now, our kitchen and dining area are so small we do not eat together as a family. “HFH changes lives, it makes healthy lives possible; it makes healthy families happen. Now retired, I have worked on numerous HFH building sites in several states, and volunteered in several HFH Restores. These experiences have touched my life, my heart. The thing that most touched me had been meeting and visiting with the recipients of HFH generosity. It has touched their lives. It has changed their life. It has changed my life. I am a proud supporter of SGV Habitat.”

We proudly support SGV Habitat. We proudly support SGV Habitat.
On the corner of Howard and Navarro proudly stands two homes built with over 750 volunteers, committed corporate partnerships, youth and faith-based organizationsandgenerousdonors.
Years ago, on this site, stood a liquor store that attracted undesirable behavior in the neighborhood. After it burned down twice, it became a community garden which eventually became untended to and overgrown.
When SGV Habitat began construction last May, the corner represented a new beginning for the neighborhood and the 2 families who now call this site home.
“Everybody thinks about the City of Pasadena as ‘The Rose Bowl’ or ‘The Parade of Roses’ no, it’s about the people. The people are the most important part of our community,” District 1 Councilmember Tyron Hampton said when he welcomed the families to his district during the home dedication.
Throughout the construction project, neighbors visited the site offering water, food, and kind words to the staff and volunteers. The graciousness of the neighborhood was on display with the welcoming words and gifts from the neighborhood watch committee. “In this neighborhood, something special happens--first you becomeourneighbor;thenyoubecomeourfriend;andthenyoubecomeourfamily,”saidCarmenCorteza longtimeresidentandneighborhoodwatchcommitteemember.
Gift baskets were presented to the two families from the neighborhood association. Included among the gifts were citrus fruits plucked from several neighbor’s trees representing the heritage of citrus groves that were prevalent in Pasadena. Many of these trees still stand dating back to the 1800’s. Keeping with this tradition, theconstructioncrewplantedcitrustreesintheyardsatHowardandNavarro.
Each of the families have put in hundreds of hours working on these homes. Families contribute “sweat equity” or volunteer hours working on the construction site, at events and in the ReStore as part of the homeownership program. Rene was volunteering and put in nearly 400 hours on the project before his familyknewtheyhadbeenqualifiedtopurchasethishome.
“I was having fun working on the house, meeting the other volunteers, even before I knew that this would be our home. I will still put in hours even after we move in. It is a good feeling to volunteer and help others,”Rene,HowardNavarrofuturehomeownersaid.
Johnny and his oldest son Angel have worked on the project almost every weekend. Before these families found the homeownership opportunity with Habitat for Humanity, they thought their only option for homeownership was moving away from the communities where they have employment, where their childrenhavegrownupandhavefriendsandactivities.
Thanks to the support of volunteers, donors, corporate sponsors, city, and state officials, they can thrive in thecommunitytheylovewiththesupportsystemoffamilyandfriends.
“Weappreciateeveryoneofyourprayerswrittenonthebeamsofthishouse, thosesaidinsilenceorspoken together. This has been the most heartfelt experience for my family,” Johnny, Howard Navarro future homeownersaidwhilethankingthesupporters.
Xochitl is a devoted mother of two children, Daisy (17) and Robert Jr. (13). Their lives were deeply impacted by a tragic event that occurred last year when Xochitl's husband, Robert, her partner for 30 years and the father of Daisy and Robert Jr., passed away after battling a debilitating illness. Before this, Xochitl was a stay-at-home mom, responsible for managing the household and her children's busy schedules. Robert had been the main breadwinner, and Xochitl contributed to their income through a small baking business. As Robert's health declined, he was unable to attend to the much-needed repairs on their aging 1920s home. With his passing, Xochitl faced limited finances and a home in dire need of repair, including thekitchen, backporch, andtheexteriorofthehouse.
The Habitat Home Preservation team, along with volunteers and a generous grant from Lowe's, stepped in to address the serious electrical issues in Xochitl's kitchen. Once the kitchen was renovated, Xochitl was inspired to expand her baking business, giving her the means to provide for her family and secure their long-term stability. She wasted no time and began baking for clients and taking orders through the holiday season, markinganewchapterinherlife.
Volunteers continued to work diligently, painting the house and repairing the back porch. The positive impact of their work radiated throughout the community. Out-of-town guests of Xochitl's neighbors, upon learning about Lowe's partnership with SGV Habitat and the volunteers' efforts, spontaneously signed up to help while on vacation. Neighbors also extended their support, offering kind words, encouragement, and meals."Somuchsupportwasshown,"Xochitlsaid."Ifeltmyheartwasonthemend."
The most heartwarming change Xochitl experienced during this journey was the transformation in her children. Her son, who had previously refrained from inviting friends over, started welcoming them into their home. On Halloween, after a night of trick-or-treating with friends, he proudly ushered them into the house, prepared snacks, and gathered in the kitchen, a scene that would have been unthinkable in the past.
The loss of their father will always remain, but through this experience they have gained perspective of what community, selfless acts of kindness, and generosity truly means. “My children have always seen me volunteer at school, and on their sports teams, but they had never experienced what it feels like to have people do for them.” Xochitl explained. “They have a determination to help in their own community. Payingitforwardisnowembeddedintheirhearts.”
“I cry every day in gratitude for the generosity of Habitat and its volunteers,” Xochitl’s said with tears. “It has been so difficult with Robert gone, he took care of all the repairs to our house and our hearts, we will always miss him, but now we have hope things will be ok. This is my forever home with my forever memories.”
San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity transforms lives and communities by bringing people together to build, renovate, and repair homes for families in need. SGV Habitat for Humanity was chartered by HabitatforHumanityInternational(HFHI)in1990.
SGV Habitat for Humanity's programs are a hand up, not a hand out. Qualified families purchase their homes and invest 500 hours of "sweat equity" side-by-side with volunteers to reach their dream of home ownership. Each year thousands of volunteers from faith communities, corporations, schools and civic groupscometogethertobuildhomesandtosolvelocalaffordablehousingchallenges.
In the 33 years of this affiliate's service, there has never been a sale or foreclosure of a home built and sold by SGV Habitat for Humanity! This outstanding track record can be credited to selection of responsible home buyers, excellent Homebuyer Education provided by SGV Habitat throughout each build, andfinancialcounselingprovidedtoperspectivebuyers.
SGV Habitat recently opened an additional ReStore location in Pasadena. ReStores are discount home improvement stores that sell donated new and used building materials at a fraction of the retail price, promoting sustainable living practices of recycling and reuse while keeping millions of pounds of stillusablematerialsfromlandfills.
