building the american dream. it takes all of us to build diverse communities in which everyone can thrive and create their own american dream. equitable, safe, and stable housing is the foundation of these dreams... ...and it all starts with you.
your impact in fiscal year 2021

families in the san gabriel valley and beyond are now living their own american dream. they no longer worry about making difficult sacrifices like living in unsafe housing and going without proper healthcare or the bare essentials. thanks to you, these families now have the chance to get a higher education, the ability to save for when times get tough, and the opportunity to thrive on their own terms... ...and it all began with a hand up, not a handout.

this was a very busy fiscal year... july 2020 you made our duarte restore opening a success Your support for our Duarte ReStore was evident before it was even open! You showed up at city meetings ready to provide support. When we finally opened, you arrived ready to shop and make a difference in spite of the pandemic! Today, dedicated ReStore shoppers like you show up every day to find the best deals, for the best stuff, for an even better cause!
september 2021 work began at the accessory dwelling unit in pasadena The Waverly Drive accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in the City of Pasadena is the first project of its kind in our history. Thanks to the Pasadena Community Foundation as well as partnerships with Union Station Homeless Services and the City of Pasadena, this ADU will serve two individuals transitioning from homelessness into a life of independence. This model serves as proof of how ADUs can provide housing where land is not plentiful, like our very own state.
january 2021 you helped launch the biggest campaign in our history In another first, the Expanding the American Dream campaign is the largest and most comprehensive campaign ever introduced at SGV Habitat. With your help, we were able to spread news of this ambitious effort to serve 100 families locally and abroad through homeownership and home repair by December 2024. As of this October, you’ve helped serve over 20 families!

february 2021 we talked housing with our friends at the state capitol
Although it was virtual, we met with representatives like State Senator Anthony Portantino and State Assemblymember Laura Friedman to discuss the importance of passing affordable housing legislation in our state, where 1 in 5 families spend over 50% of their income on housing alone.
february 2021 members of congress heard our pleas for affordable housing We joined hundreds of other local Habitat chapters and affordable housing advocates in a virtual event geared towards creating awareness and action to end the housing crisis. Several members of congress heard our pleas to bring more focus on eradicating systemic racism in housing policy, and how the pandemic created economic disparities throughout the United States.
march 2021 you went on a virtual tour of the torch street project lot You joined us on a very special tour of the Torch Street project lot in Baldwin Park, made possible through a partnership with the City. Your continued support will help construct at least ten new homes on one lot, giving several families the opportunity to build and purchase their own homes - and the chance at a brighter future!
...that you helped make possible! april 2021 you helped us complete the olive street project in baldwin park The second acquisition-rehab project in Baldwin Park was completed during the pandemic thanks to your continued support! This once dilapidated vacant house was transformed into a beautiful home with two bedrooms and one bathroom. Adjacent to another Habitat house, this is our first all-electric home that will provide safe and stable shelter to Mai (middle) and his family for years to come!
june 2021 you joined us at the latest groundbreaking in pasadena The Howard-Navarro homes are the fourth project in the City of Pasadena made possible thanks to your support. You joined us virtually in June to mark the groundbreaking of this highly anticipated project! This lot will soon be home to two more Habitat families who will finally be living their own American Dream - and they’ll have you to thank!
individuals and families all around the san gabriel valley and beyond have brighter futures in their safe and stable homes. none of this would have been possible without you!
Pages 10 - 11
it also ends with you. the housing crisis may seem insurmountable at first, but this past year is proof that, with your support, a lot can be done in the fight against it. every donation, every volunteer hour, every purchase at the restore, every share, like, and post on social media, and every voice matters - especially yours. your support today ensures that the families of tomorrow can live in a world with safe, stable, and affordable shelter... for everyone.
meet some of the families you’ve helped. go ahead. turn the page.
four children can now thrive at home e’tiffany’s four children now have room to study, play, and thrive in the home that you have made possible.
Note: E’Tiffany’s home was completed in Fiscal Year 2021, but due to the pandemic, her family moved in Fiscal Year 2022. For E’Tiffany, the American Dream of homeownership was just that - a dream. Born and raised in Los Angeles, homeownership was out of reach, especially as a single mother to four beautiful children. Since it takes a village to raise children, she wanted to remain close to her family, but this was quickly becoming unrealistic with the increasing cost of rent, but then you came into the picture. Earlier this year, E’Tiffany and her children moved into their new home in Monterey Park. Her family went from living in a cramped apartment to thriving in a four-bedroom home with enough space for everyone. Today, E’Tiffany has a lot to look forward to, including spending quality time with her entire
family in her new home. “There are so many things I look forward to, but mainly spending time with my family, watching the kids run around and enjoying the backyard. I’m looking forward to the beautiful memories that I’ll create with my family.”
“it means a lot. this is a new journey for us - and it’s just the beginning.” - e’tiffany, homeowner E’Tiffany, like the many Habitat families before her, have so much to be grateful for. They are now actively living their American Dreams that were only made possible thanks to your generosity.
from refugees to thriving family once uprooted from their home country, tamer and mariese have a chance at their own american dream, thanks to you.
Note: Tamer’s home, a recycled Habitat home, was refreshed in Fiscal Year 2021, but due to the pandemic, their family moved in Fiscal Year 2022. Six years ago, Tamer and Mariese escaped their home country to seek asylum in the United States. In a matter of days, their way of life changed dramatically. They had to adjust to living in a country that was unfamiliar to them.
After many failed attempts at finding safe and stable housing, they were selected as homebuyers! Today, they live in a “recycled” home in Pasadena that was sold back to Habitat after former homeowners Matt and Bethany found an out-of-state opportunity that
Since their arrival, Tamer and Mariese wondered what would become of their family. Attemps at finding support for their situation were unsuccessful. Finding safe and stable housing was one of these lingering problems.
“we are blessed. we have everything. it is a feeling of peace [...] a dream come true.” - tamer, homeowner
Their last residence was neither safe nor stable. With hostile neighbors and increasing rent, Tamer and Mariese were quickly realizing that their family would need to move soon - but then, thanks to your generosity, their luck changed.
allowed them the ability to buy on the open market. Thanks to you, Matt and Bethany were able to pursue their American Dream elsewhere, and now Tamer, Mariese, and their children David and Heaven have a chance to thrive.
cracked and shaken, but not broken earthquakes severely damaged gerlie’s home and put her family at risk, but today, her family is thriving.
Gerlie is the matriarch of a family of five. Her home is in a sloped area in Marilog, Davao City in the Philippines. Frequent earthquakes in 2019 severely damaged their home. Gerlie felt discomfort, not only of the visible cracks in the house but also of their location near the slope. Her family faced the possibility that their house might collapse because of the cracks, or the land may cave in without warning. Despite the imminent threats to her and her family caused by the damage, Gerlie and her family had no choice but to stay in their home. The sleepless nights and uncertainty were taking a toll. “Although we fear for our safety, we have no choice but to stay in our house,” she said.
Just as things seemed helpless, the Habitat Mindanao Earthquake Disaster Risk Project restored the safety and integrity of their home. Gerlie no longer has to worry about her home crumbling around her family.
“i am very happy… my mind is now at peace, knowing my family is safe and secure.” - gerlie, homeowner Thanks to the support of donors like you and the Habitat for Humanity tithe program, Gerlie and many more families just like hers in the region have safe and stable shelter for years to come.
a house destroyed, but hope renewed cado lost her home in 2018 when an earthquake destroyed several homes in Haiti, but today, her hope is restored.
In 2018, Cado, her daughter Olivine, and her grandchildren Naelle, Ralph, and Larissa (from left) were left without a home when an earthquake rocked the City of Saint Louis du Nord in Haiti. Her home, among many others, were destroyed, leaving many families in temporary unsafe accomodations.
Naelle, Ralph, and Larissa now have a place to play, and more importantly, a place to study. Thanks to you, they will break through barriers that their past generations could only dream of. In a situation where all hope was lost, Cado’s family found hope.
For someone who was not educated as a young girl, Cado felt it was important to make sure her family had the opportunity to thrive and get an education. Due to the earthquake, however, Cado’s grandchildren no longer had a safe place to study. In December of 2019, everything changed.
“if not for habitat, we’d have to sleep where we get wet when it rains, with no real security from the elements.” - olivine, homeowner
Thanks to donors and supporters like you, Cado, Olivine, and her children are now thriving in their new home.
Every family deserves a home where they are safe to learn, play, and be comfortable enough to earn a decent living. Your donation makes the difference.
a solid foundation for american dreams As I reflect on my first year at SGV Habitat, I think about how last year was a period of adjustment and uncertainty for many - including myself. For even more people, however, the pandemic represented a significant threat to their stability and way of life. At a time when the housing crisis has never been worse, millions are still at risk of losing the roof over their heads. Worse yet, the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing ecomonic and housing inequities that have plagued minority groups for decades. The silver lining in all of this, however, is you. The homeownership, home repair, and advocacy efforts you make possible continued to shape the lives of families throughout the San Gabriel Valley and beyond at a time when so many face uncertain futures.
Instead of worrying about how to pay for food or health care, these families can focus on creating their own american dreams. Instead of staying up at night, expecting the next crisis to upend their way of live, these families can now weather any storm that life throws at them. All of this is made possible thanks to your generosity. Every dollar and every hour of your time counts in the fight towards a San Gabriel Valley and a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to call home. I thank you, and the families and individuals you’ve impacted, thank you. From the bottom of our hearts, we are blessed to have you as supporters and partners in affordable housing.
Your impact is something to be proud of. As SGV Habitat donors and supporters, the significance of what you do for families and individuals is evident in more ways than one. It manifests in the stability many families feel now that they no longer worry about the high cost of rent. It is present in the children who, thanks to a stable living environment, are now able to focus on schoolwork and achieve a higher education. It shows in the smiling faces of parents who no longer worry for their families, knowing that they are able to finally provide an environment where they can all thrive.

how you help build american dreams it takes a village to build a community full of dreams Whether its a helping hand at a construction site, a one-time or monthly donation through the Builders’ Club, a car donation, a legacy gift, a ReStore donation or purchase, or just word of mouth, every action is just as important as the next in making stronger families, stronger communities, and helping families achieve their own version of the American Dream.
affordable homeownership program
affordable home repair program
Habitat homebuyers help build their homes alongside community volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Our homebuyers complete 100 hours of volunteer construction per adult member of their household. Homebuyers build their own home and take homebuyer education courses to prepare them for success. As a result, our homebuyers thrive in their homes with a total foreclosure rate of 0% since our inception.
Seniors, veterans and other low-income homeowners can find financial relief and stability through our low-cost, nonprofit home repair program. The repairs ensure the safety, security and sustainability of our clients’ homes.
