A Message From Neil Duboff, President & Capital Campaign Chair
After years of discussion, consultation and planning, the repair and improvement of our beautiful synagogue is now underway. Along with it, a capital campaign which to date has raised $10.9 million toward a $16 million target.
Prior to the campaign’s public launch, our volunteer steering committee and canvassers met to review project plans, timelines and administrative process, and acknowledge the challenges that present when canvassing for causes. One year later, it’s worth revisiting some key points from that discussion.
We aren’t starting from scratch. We are bringing our building up to modern standards by making it a safer, healthier environment, where the organization can deliver its key functions of worship and programming more effectively and efficiently. At the same time, with critical repairs being the core factor for the project, aesthetic renovation choices are scrutinized to ensure that they are costeffective elements that compliment the beauty of our mid-century modern design while preserving it’s ‘feel’ as a place of holiness. With these items premier in the minds of all involved, we are working to maintain and continue the standards set by our Synagogue’s founders and the original
builders – all family members from earlier generations – as a beautiful place to pray, to learn, and to gather. L’Dor Va Dor.
Capital campaigns can re-energize an organization. How? Through the engagement that takes place between key stakeholders (you, our members) and canvassers. These discussions are meant for communicating praise or concern, listening to other perspectives, and ensuring that your comments reach synagogue leadership. We encourage members to meet and talk with their canvassers, or to email us at hello@szfuture.ca with feedback and comments about the project or the synagogue in general. Communicate with your canvasser – fellow members who, through their volunteer participation are demonstrating their commitment toward realizing the success of the project and your synagogue. By sharing your feedback we intend to guide and improve SZ.
It’s a lengthy process. This project is many years in the making and given the discussion we consistently invite, we won’t start rushing now. We’ve always said that the campaign would take time, and we recently advised that it will continue to the end of 2023. However, a reminder that while the public campaign launched this past January, discussions with community members
regarding support for the project began in 2018, when the board voted to proceed with critical repairs.
Last January I wrote, “Our renovations can, must and will address the needs of all congregation members, accommodating both those who choose to worship in person and those who prefer to worship at home. They must also accommodate simchas, funerals and birth. They must address safety issues. We need to plan for our worship needs, our family needs, our children’s needs, our educational needs. And these plans must meet your needs.” Through Phase I construction, we have begun to address these needs. Through member consultation and feedback, we have begun to address these needs. Through planning that facilitates gathering, both in-person and virtually in order to remain connected, we begin to meet these undeniable needs. Thank you to all who have contributed toward completion of the building project and success of the institution. To those we will reach out to this year, we look forward to connecting with you.
Wishing you all the best.

Tu B'Shevat A Message From Rabbi
Anibal Mass, Spiritual LeaderWaiting is one of the most difficult things. We hate having to wait in line at the store, in the hospital for care, at a red light, until the oven reaches 425 degrees, etc.
Sometimes it looks like life is all about waiting and waiting all the time.
For this reason, it is extremely important to develop patience. The dictionary defines patience as the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.
When we don’t take this seriously and we don’t work on developing patience, it’s no surprise that we go around angry and upset!
Reflecting on this, I realized that Tu B'Shevat, among all the beautiful meanings it presents, can teach us a lot about being patient.
Trees teach us to be patient. While plants will produce fruit the first year from seeds, some fruit trees may not bear fruit for years after the seed has been planted.
On top of that, the Torah adds an even longer waiting time by saying (Leviticus 19:23-25): “When you come into the land and plant all kinds of trees for food, then you shall regard their fruit as forbidden; three years it shall be forbidden to you; it
must not be eaten. In the fourth year all their fruit shall be set apart for rejoicing in the Lord. But in the fifth year you may eat of their fruit, that their yield may be increased for you: I am the Lord your God.”
These extra delays are known as orlah and neta revai.
The first lesson for Adam and Eve was based on their desire for instant gratification.
The first transgression recorded in the Torah is when they ate from the “forbidden” fruit. I write “forbidden” in quotation marks, because according to the Midrash, the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was not intended to be eternally prohibited. Adam and Eve were created on Friday afternoon. The Midrash explains that they were instructed not to eat the fruit for only three hours, until Shabbat. Once Friday night had arrived, the fruit would have been theirs to enjoy. They lacked the selfcontrol to delay that pleasure.
The three years that we wait before eating fruit of any tree is a reminder of the three hours that Adam and Eve did not wait to eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.
It is interesting that the Talmud describes how fruit that ripened on a three-yearold tree before Tu B'Shevat is considered
orlah and is forbidden to eat, while fruit ripening on or after Tu B'Shevat of the tree’s third year is permitted.
In other words, Tu B'Shevat is the time where we analyze and reflect if a fruit is ready or not.
Adam and Eve weren’t ready for the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil for another three hours and yet, they couldn’t wait. They wanted it and had to have it right away.
We go through the same thing all the time, wanting things before they are ready or before we are ready to receive or experience them.
Every week, as I drive by our building on Wellington Crescent, I wish we could all move back there right away. I remind
myself that it isn’t in our best interest –it’s not the time. How could we enjoy the space safely and fulsomely without floors, walls, heat or ceilings? A weekly reminder of how important it is to learn to be patient.
But! While we wait, we can use the time to prepare ourselves - to be ready in good time to enjoy the fruits that will come. Even if it takes a while, the promises of God always come to happen.
Blessings from my family to yours for a Happy Tu B'Shevat.

Tu B'Shevat: An Opportunity to Deepen our Connection to the Natural World A Message From Cantor Leslie Emery
Each year as Tu B’Shevat approaches I find myself smiling at trees. I have always loved their majestic presence and enjoyed the urban forest planted throughout our winter city. The new year for the trees occurs on the 15th of Shevat, during the full moon. This practice is rooted in Torah and is described in the book of Leviticus 19:23 instructing us to wait five years after planting a tree before eating the fruit from it, the fourth year setting aside the fruit to be taken to the Temple as an expression of gratitude to God. Finally during the fifth year, all the fruit from that moment onwards belongs to the farmer. Because of this, a birthday for trees was required to track the age of trees and care for them accordingly.
Fruit trees are special and have a special role in nourishing life. Even in the context of war, fruit trees are given a unique status in the Torah and are not to be cut down (Deuteronomy 20:19). Imagine a world where trees mattered so much that we are aware of their age. Imagine a world where the wellbeing of trees matters more than our immediate desires. In many ways our tradition guides us
towards a closer understanding of our relationship with the natural world.
These days it is essential that humans reframe our relationship with the Earth. With the realities of Climate Change encroaching upon us, we are realizing our way of life has become destructively disconnected from nature. Rarely do we watch trees grow and pick the fruit directly from the source. We no longer live our lives in a direct relationship with nature as our ancestors once did. Our ancestors have left behind plenty of insight for us if we take the time to look. The Jewish day is intertwined with the rhythm of the Sun and the months with the Moon. The 15th of each Jewish month marks the full moon. The Amidah contains an important line that changes in accordance with the agricultural season in Israel. As for trees and our relationship with the planet, if you look, you can find a forest of information to guide you.
One of my favourite teachings about trees appears in the Babylonian Talmud. Honi the Circle Maker was a scholar in the 1st century BCE. One day Honi was travelling along the road and came upon a man
planting a carob tree. He asked the man, “how long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?”. The man responded “70 years.” Honi replied, “Are you certain you will live another 70 years?” The man replied “I found fully grown carob trees in the world as my forefathers had planted them for me. I too plant these for my children.” We too have an obligation to plant for the future and ensure the wild places are protected and the way we interact with the world around us is sustainable.
In Jewish thought, Torah and Nature are reflections of the Divine. The natural world, is not separate from God. The late 19th century Chasidic master, Sfat Emet taught his children and grandchildren that in fact the greatest secret of Judaism is that “everything is God.” Often when we daven in synagogue we recite prayers without really thinking of their meaning. The part of the Kedushah we recite in the morning and evening rising on our toes as we say Kadosh Kadosh Kadosh, translates as Holy Holy Holy is Adonai Tz’vaot the whole world is filled with God’s glory. If we remember to see the world around us in a sacred way, we recognize the importance of living in balance with all things. In these days of disconnection, it is so important to find a path back
to understanding our impact on the environment, through how we interact with the world.
As we move towards a greater understanding of the natural world through advances in science, we should take a moment for gratitude and awareness. I am grateful to have access to fruits and vegetables even on the coldest days of Winter. We can express our gratitude through our actions by avoiding wasting food and paper and choosing products that we know are not damaging to the planet. We can attempt to not be wasteful in our use of the world’s resources. This Tu B’Shevat I ask you to take a moment to appreciate your connection to the incredible tapestry of life that surrounds us and your place in it. All of life is sacred, as is our place in it. It is time to continue the practice of planting for future generations. Happy Birthday to the Trees!
A Message From Leon Pincovich, Lay Clergy (Shammes)
Hello everyone!! I want to begin by saying how touched I was, by so many of you who reached out to me when the announcement of my role was publicized. I was extremely touched and overwhelmed by all of your messages.
My journey into this role was unexpected, at least in my eyes! Rabbi Mass approached me about the role in June, as Bill was going to retire after the High Holy Days, I had initially thought, “Not the role for me, I couldn’t do what Bill has been doing extremely well for so many years". After a few discussions with the Rabbi and Ran, I officially signed on at the beginning of November.
As many of you know, I have been part of Shaarey Zedek for many years. It probably began by crawling up to the bimah during my sister’s Bat Mitzvah in 1977. I was part of Junior Congregation in the 80’s and was also a member of Kadima and USY, which I thoroughly enjoyed and have great memories. In later years, I had the opportunity to lead the ATID group (pre-Kadima for grade 5 and 6 students.)
Although I am very excited about this role, it comes with a challenge. Covid has had a significant effect on all our lives, and those of our loved ones. God willing the worst is behind us, and we can look forward to
great things in the future.
I hope I can count on you, to come out and support our daily minyan, as you have in the past. As much as we value and appreciate our online minyannaires, it isn’t the same as the personal contact when you’re in the building! I very much noticed the difference during the High Holy Days this year in comparison to prevous years inperson.
Your challenge, which I hope you’ll accept, is to pick a morning, evening, a Shabbat or all 3 and daven with us in-person! It just isn’t the same without you there! Although there is an “I” in minyan, there is no “I” in team, and we need YOU on our team!
If you need to reach me, my phone number and email can be found at the bottom of this article.
Happy Tu B'Shevat and I hope to see you soon!

The Power of Praise A Message From Dr.
Rena Secter Elbaze, Engagement and Education DirectorAs we head into the new year, we always seem to feel the urge to formulate resolutions about being and doing better by those who are closest to us. Taking notice and offering praise concerning their achievements and contributions can really boost morale and help them thrive.
Genesis speaks extensively about Jacob’s favorite son, Joseph, the first- born of his beloved Rachel who died in childbirth.
As Jacob's favorite, Joseph has considerable self-confidence and is empowered by his father's immense love and consideration. Although as a youth, his upbringing provokes the jealousy of his brothers, his feelings of self worth give him the inner strength to cope with the challenges he will face later in life.
The story of Joseph’s nurturing upbringing is sharply contrasted with that of his older brother Reuven.
Reuven was the first-born child of Leah, the woman Jacob never wanted … he bears the brunt of Jacob’s distain and worse, his indifference.
Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks says of him: “Reuben is the leader who might have been but never was. He was Jacob’s firstborn. Jacob said of him on his deathbed, “Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign
of my strength, excelling in honour, excelling in power.” (Gen. 49:3) This is an impressive tribute, suggesting physical presence and commanding demeanour.
This praise however comes too late to provide Reuven with the self confidence to succeed in life. It does however give us an idea of the kind of person that Reuven was and the potential he possessed.
In his early years Reuben consistently appeared to be the most morally sensitive of Jacob’s children. He was Leah’s son, and keenly felt his mother’s disappointment that she was not Jacob’s favourite.”
In an article from an online source understood.org, the author discusses how praise can help children thrive: “Praise can have a powerful effect on kids... It can empower and motivate them to keep trying hard. And it can fuel them to find strategies to overcome challenges.”
Other online resources reinforce what the Torah has been teaching us for thousands of years.
For example - The Ramblings of the Titanium Don: Explorations of Conscious Reality Creation, Mindfulness, and Other Matters describes the effects of praise on individuals:
“When you do a thing, and you do it well, receiving praise for it feels amazing. It is incredibly empowering, and it serves as an affirmation of the choices you make along the way.
For whatever reason, though, our modern society eschews praise. We have an almost surreal talent for criticism, but when it comes to praise, we seem to display something of an aversion to it.”
Are we moving too fast to take the time to tell people that we appreciate them? Do we shy away from something we regard as “fluff”?
I discussed this phenomenon with my teenage daughter… I always like to get her take on my divrei Torah to see how someone from another generation feels about our ancient wisdom. She felt that the topic was totally relevant and told me about an experiment she had studies, where two groups of plants were used to test the power of praise.
One group, the group that flourished, received praise and words of love and tenderness over a period of a few weeks, while the other group of plants was either criticized or simply ignored. Needless to say, the second group withered away and eventually dried out and died…
Each of us has the power to uplift and motivate those around us…our friends, co-workers, partners, and our children and those in our care.
It’s not enough to pay people, or tend to their physical needs…
It’s true that salary, sustenance, and sex are primordial to the sustainability of the species, however as human beings, our needs go beyond those of the other creatures in the animal kingdom.
We were created in the likeness of G-d… we think, can be creative, need love and have the power to move the universe if we are nurtured and motivated.
As the new year 2023 continues to unfold, we should each take the time to give a word of praise and encouragement to those around us – in that way we will have fulfilled a huge mitzvah and launched a ripple effect that could change the world for the better.
In the words of Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: “People need encouragement if they are to lead. It is fascinating to contrast the hesitant Reuben with the confident – even overconfident – Joseph, who was loved and favoured by his father. If we want our children to have the confidence to act when action is needed, then we have to empower, encourage, and praise them.” rena@szwinnipeg.ca 204 975 3489
Valuable Lessons A Message From Tali Millo, Program Director and Lay Clergy
When I assumed my role at Congregation Shaarey Zedek more than a year ago we were dealing with various challenges in the face of the pandemic. Especially during periods of lockdown, we were tasked with finding new and creative ways of connecting with our congregation and the community. Just as with any other adversity, our experiences during the pandemic have helped us to learn valuable lessons for the future. After spending so much time apart, we are reminded to appreciate being able to gather together for services, programs and classes. It makes me so happy to have faces looking back at me during minyan services, and hearing voices singing together with me. Children are finally able to celebrate Jewish holidays together again and to create memories that will last a lifetime.
We are now facing a different set of challenges with the renovation and temporary relocation of our shul. As one can imagine, it can be difficult to plan lifecycle events, programs, services, classes and more without our home on Wellington Crescent. However, just as we were able to learn valuable lessons from the pandemic, this situation is no different. It has been incredible to work with other organizations in our community that have allowed us to be able to continue to serve our
congregation with services and programs. We are so thankful to Temple Shalom and the Asper Campus for sharing their space with us while we eagerly await for our renovation to be completed.
We have had such a wonderful time taking this opportunity to collaborate even more with other Jewish organizations. As well, this has given us the chance to explore programming in new and exciting venues! In October we enjoyed planning and taking part in a family-friendly Sukkot celebration at A Maze In Corn. This event was in partnership with PJ Library, Rady JCC and Congregation Etz Chayim. What is so special about these events, is that each organization is able to bring something different to the table that enhances the experience for everyone. For example, Cantor Leslie Emery brought a lulav and etrog and helped to teach children how to say the blessings and how to have fun shaking a lulav!
Two Congregations Under One Roof was an incredible event that embodied the importance of collaboration, partnership, and community. At this event, Temple Shalom and Congregation Shaarey Zedek joined together with music and teachings to connect our two congregations in a beautiful and meaningful way. Planning and executing this event with Temple
Shalom left us feeling so welcomed, inspired, and excited for future endeavours together!
Our community Chanukah event at the Asper Campus was a blast and such a perfect way to start off the holiday. Children enjoyed games, activities, crafts, face painting, glitter tattoos, and of course sufganiyot! The program concluded with a special telling of the story of Chanukah by Cantor Emery and Rabbi Mass along with a joyous sing-along. As well, it was extremely meaningful to be able to come together as a community to collect non-perishable food items for Jewish Child and Family Service. Our family-friendly Tu B’Shevat program took place on February 5th at the Children’s Museum of Manitoba. We are proud to have partnered with organizations in our community to celebrate the birthday of the trees! The fun-filled morning included a scavenger hunt around the museum and various activities to help children learn more about Tu B’Shevat.
We are busy planning programs, including a Hollywood themed Purim celebration for families with community partners.
I feel so fortunate that we have been able to grow and adapt to all of the changes we have experienced in recent years. I cannot wait to see what the new year will bring, and I look forward to continuing to work together as a community to strengthen and connect Jewish Winnipeg.
Sisterhood
Sandy Polanski and Louise Raber Sisterhood Co-Presidents
Sisterhood has been working hard to overcome the past three years of Covid. With the move out of our Wellington Crescent Building into Temple Shalom, we were able to find space at The Asper Campus and set up the Judaica Shop. Through Chanukah we had the shop open on regular hours, but are now available by appointment only. Please email Sisterhood at sisterhood@szwinnipeg.ca or leave a message on the gift shop voicemail at 204975-3487, and someone will be in touch to set up an appointment. They say it takes a village and we are all working together to keep the Shop open.
The Book Club has been up and running for the past two plus years. Now in the capable hands of Rhonda Youell, the Book Club is successful on ZOOM. As of this year it will remain online at the request of the participants. Call the office at 204-4523711 if you are interested and Rhonda will call you back. If you aren’t sure this is for you, you are welcome to attend a meeting without being a member of sisterhood. If you do enjoy it and want to continue, we ask that you join Sisterhood.
Bonnie Robinson and Alice Weissmann are co-chairing The Sisterhood Shabbat. It will take place in person at either Temple Shalom or The Berney Theatre. As of today the date is not set, but will hopefully be in March. If you’d to participate, please
contact the office and leave a message for either Bonnie or Alice or send an email to sisterhood@szwinnipeg.ca.
Deb Stern is new to the Sisterhood Board and is already hard at work planning a program. She has arranged “The Jews of Shanghai” to be presented on ZOOM in late-March. This program has been well received throughout Women’s League Internationally. The presenter does not charge for this program, but instead suggests we send her an honorarium that she donates to her Sisterhood. Watch for advertising for this program soon.
Marisa Hochman and Louise Raber have a date for The 58th Annual Interfaith Luncheon. Monday, June 12, 2023 at Noon at the Asper Campus. Save the date and watch for details to follow shortly.
The Mitzvah Group has been unable to provide programs at The Simkin Centre. We are hoping for Spring 2023 to have our Annual Mother’s Day Tea. Rochelle Pincovich will be needing volunteers to help cut and serve dainties. If you’d like to be part of this Mitzvah, please leave her a message at the office. The Recreational Therapy and Spiritual Care Programs at the Simkin have been doing many many programs Since Covid shut the building dow. Sisterhood has sent donations to help offset some of the costs.
Our Annual Torah Fund “Tearless Tea” will be in March. We really appreciate the support during the Covid times. Watch for more information about Torah Fund in the next few weeks.
Willow Place for Women and Children who find themselves homeless due to marital issues, is still near and dear to Sisterhood. Unfortunately, with the move out of our building, we have no place to receive and store donated goods. If anyone reading this has a space and is willing to have people drop off items (non-perishable), Gloria Cantor our liaison to Willow Place will arrange to have them picked up and delivered. Many people are wanting to donate. Towels (new or used, but washed clean), toiletries, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products and cleaning supplies are always needed. Willow Place has a WISH LIST on line at wwwwillowplaceshelter.ca.
IntraContinental Region of Women’s League of which Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and Women’s League of Congregation Etz Chayim are affiliates, will hold its annual conference virtually on
Sunday April 30, 2023. Shaarey Zedek and Etz Chayim are co-hosting this conference. This is a fabulous opportunity for everyone to get a taste of what Conference is without leaving the comfort of your own home. Information regarding cost and agenda will be announced shortly. It won’t be quite the same online, but here’s a chance to meet people from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Colorado, Mexico City and Texas!
Stay warm and be well everyone. We’ll get through this yet!!
