Cantor Leslie Emery Main Service Rabbi Alan Green Main Service Noah Trachtenberg Family Servicewill have the opportunity to be recognized here). If you have driven by our shul recently, you may have noticed that Akman Construction has nearly completed the cleaning of the exterior stone.
With only a few issues still to be resolved, a small group continues to meet regularly with our General Contractors, Akman Construction, and architectural firm Number TEN Architectural Group. At this point, we are on budget, largely due to the significant contingency line that was factored in at the beginning.
The L’Dor Va Dor capital campaign has been tremendously successful raising $14.3 million. This represents approximately 250 commitments and includes the $3 million in funds earmarked for the campaign when Board voted to proceed with the project and a grant from the Province through its Arts, Culture and Sport Community Fund program. We thank all our supporters for their generousity and commitment.
Neil Duboff PresidentConstruction is moving along, and we anticipate the completion of the construction in Spring 2024. A decision was made to replace all the windows, and we are waiting to receive final quotes related to Audio Visual upgrades before we can proceed with that aspect of the project. We are close to making a final decision regarding the location of the donor wall (for those of you still contemplating a contribution, donors who give $1,000 and up
As was promised when the campaign launched, we are working to reach every member, and are very grateful to have Shammes Emeritus Bill Weissmann assist in this endeavour. Since May 2023, Bill has made more than 240 phone calls to members. He has engaged in dialogue with over 100 people and invites those he did not reach to contact him directly.
If you have not yet contributed, please consider making a meaningful gift at whatever level you are able to give. To connect with Bill, he can be reached through the synagogue mainline at 204452-3711, or via email at billw@szwinnipeg.ca. If you have made a decision regarding a gift to the campaign, you can contact our Capital Campaign Manager, Jodi Novak, also through the mainline, or directly by email at jodi@szfuture.ca.
To show our congregants that we are taking this request seriously, I decided to personally produce and oversee every aspect of the service, which, by the way, is based on the successful formula lead by Cantor Leslie prior to COVID-19.
The service will involve the participation of young talents who will create not just beautiful music but also inspiring moments for the whole family.
Every part of the family service was designed with family participation in mind. We hope to see people singing along, dancing, laughing, crying, and jumping up and down – whatever they feel motivated to express and enjoy.
I believe that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are special times to reconnect with a loving God and offering God the full range of our emotions.
I find myself remembering that my first message to the congregation after last year’s High Holidays was an open invitation to share with me your thoughts about our High Holiday services.
I tried to guess what the main topic of the feedback would be. Perhaps something about the site itself, perhaps that one of the services didn’t have the quartet. Instead, the number one item was a request to bring back the SZ Family Service.
I shouldn’t be surprised. People are mindful about the next generation and their involvement in Jewish life. While Winnipeg has different options to choose from for how to attend High Holiday services, there aren’t as many opportunities for families to attend services together, where kids can express themselves through movement and sound without being shushed and adults can find meaningful messages to satisfy their own spiritual needs.
We at SZ believe that our family service comes to fill that gap. I am so happy to hear that people feel that as well and have requested the return of the Family Service.
My former Rabbi and teacher from Chile taught me that if a child can’t understand your sermon, half the adults won’t either. He encouraged me to always work to speak and connect with the kids in the room. That’s why in our Family Service we will still have a “sermon”, but it’ll be presented as a puppet show with a message that can be understood, appreciated and absorbed by both children and adults alike.
There is nothing more powerful to achieve Jewish continuation than having kids, parents and grandparents praying together. For myself, seeing generations together united in prayer is especially important, and I’m grateful that my family here in Winnipeg allows 3 generations to be together in services.
We read in the Tanach, in Judges 2:10: “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge Hashem or remember the mighty things Hashem had done for Israel.”
I believe it is important that generations get the opportunity to pray together, and our Family Service creates that environment.
This is also a place for young families to connect with each other. I find there aren’t nearly enough opportunities for families to mingle. The Family Service will also be an amazing time to connect to other families.
There is another reason why I think the Family Service is so special, and that is because one doesn’t have to have any theological/liturgical
knowledge to come, nor to participate and enjoy. Services are designed to be short, include meaningful explanations, and provide a projection of words on a screen in Hebrew, English and transliteration. This is all intentional! We want you to feel free to invite your friends, regardless of their level of knowledge or practice, to come and experience a high-energy, fun environment engineered to show that Judaism can be fun and AMAZING!
I truly believe that our Family Service could be a pillar in awakening love for Judaism to a new generation.
Ashira and I would like to wish all of you a meaningful and inspirational Shanah Tovah filled with blessings, love, and joy.
world, young Jews often find themselves drawn to diverse locations, leading to a dispersion of our congregations. Yet, rather than viewing this trend as a threat, we can see it as an opportunity. Embracing technology and virtual platforms, we can bridge the geographical gaps and create vibrant online communities. By engaging young Jews through programming and educational initiatives, we can foster a sense of belonging.
Another obstacle lies in the integration of Jewish identity and tradition into modern life. As the world rapidly evolves, the traditional role of synagogues may seem less relevant to some. In response, synagogues must adapt and innovate to remain dynamic centers of Jewish life. Emphasizing the relevance of ancient teachings in the context of contemporary challenges can breathe new life into our community. Initiatives that promote social action, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialogue can ignite a passion for Jewish values, creating a meaningful sense of purpose within our congregants. Financial sustainability is another challenge that weighs heavily on many synagogues. Maintaining a spiritual haven requires resources, and with rising costs and declining memberships, financial strain can threaten our community's existence. However, this is an opportunity to cultivate a culture of collective responsibility and support. Encouraging endowments and legacy giving ensures a lasting impact for future generations, cementing the continuity of our cherished synagogues.
In the timeless embrace of tradition, Shaarey Zedek stands as a symbol of unity and spirituality. Over the years, synagogues have witnessed the ebbs and flows of Jewish life, preserving a legacy that spans generations. However, like any community institution, synagogues face unique challenges in the modern world. As we look towards the future, it is crucial to acknowledge these obstacles and draw strength from our shared values, as we forge ahead with optimism and determination.
One of the most significant challenges facing synagogues today is the shifting demographics of the Jewish community. In an increasingly globalized
A challenge that remains ever-present is inclusivity and diversity within our synagogues. Our community should be a welcoming space for all Jews, regardless of their background, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity. We must continually strive for greater inclusivity, recognizing that unity in diversity is a source of strength, not division. Emphasizing dialogue and understanding will foster a sense of belonging and make Shaarey Zedek a hub of acceptance and love.
Amid these challenges, a positive message emerges, offering hope for the future of our synagogues. The rich tapestry of Jewish history has shown resilience in the face of adversity. Our ancestors weathered storms, preserved traditions, and paved the way for our vibrant community today. The strength of Shaarey Zedek, and indeed all synagogues, lies in the hearts of the people who comprise them. The power of community, love, and shared values can carry us through the toughest times.
Furthermore, the rise of technology presents opportunities for growth and connection. Virtual events and educational platforms allow us to reach Jews who can't always access our in person activities. The embrace of technology also streamlines administration and communication, ensuring that our resources are utilized effectively to serve the needs of our congregation.
Above all, our faith offers the enduring gift of hope. With faith, we recognize that every challenge is an invitation to learn, grow, and improve. When we come together, united by our common beliefs and aspirations, there is no obstacle too great for our community to overcome.
Shaarey Zedek has a legacy of resilience and adaptability. By embracing change, innovation, and inclusivity, we can create a thriving future for our synagogues. The challenges we face today are opportunities for growth and transformation. Let us forge ahead with unity, hope, and a shared vision for a stronger, more vibrant Shaarey Zedek community, ensuring that the flame of our faith continues to burn brightly for generations to come.
forgot why they left Egypt in the first place! On many occasions, they expressed a desire to return to what they knew under Pharoah’s yoke, rather than face the unknown.
They lashed out at Moses, their leader. They tried his patience and doubted his word.
We know with hindsight, that things did work out in the end! Our people reached the Promised Land, there was enough to eat, and the inhabitants weren’t the giants some of the spies had lead them to believe!
I remember taking my daughters to the lake when they were kids, driving down a gravel road that they had never ridden before, as they huddled together in the back seat, I reassured them that we would safely arrive at our destination – I had been there before. I knew it would be alright.
Hope, Tikvah; there is a reason why the Israeli national anthem is called this way. For a people who have experienced so much tragedy and hardship, we need to hold up the word Tikvah like a beacon, a reminder that when times get tough, we must not let despair and pessimism get the better of us.
Transitions of any kind are a challenge… parents going from having a full house to being empty nesters, adults transitioning from the working world into retirement, high school students getting ready for university…workers anticipating a promotion, students awaiting results from a big exam…
As we await the future, we may have doubts and insecurities. We can do our best to plan and the rest is in G-d’s hands.
We can also look to our leadership and those who have been there before, for guidance and direction.
The Exodus story contains many examples of the extreme challenges that the Children of Israel faced when they left Egypt to embark on the journey to the Land of Israel.
As the challenges became more extreme, they
If we look at our own micro-community, we too are in a position of transition, what some might call a rocky road, as we await our re-entry into our newly renovated building. We forget that 70 years ago, our synagogue went through a full transition and amalgamation as Congregations
Shaarey Zedek and Shaarey Shamayim moved into the new building at 561 Wellington Crescent. We forget that they must have gone through some growing pains back then!
As we look to the examples of our past, we can start to feel a bit more reassured that the road of transition and change has been travelled before.
In August, Shaarey Zedek Staff and Clergy participated in an all day workshop focusing on Building Respectful Workplace and Conflict Resolution led by Paul Kruse of Mediation Services.
Our forebearers made it and so can we. We may not be able to predict the future, but what we can control, is our attitude towards change and transition. We can choose to be positive and optimistic and we can look to those who have been there before us.
Our positivity can reassure others and help them feel safe and secure.
Our leadership is doing a great job to pave the way for a bright future for our congregation. You may have doubts or objections; that okay! We’re here to listen and provide support.
Remember that expressing doubt is alright… at the same time, showing hopefulness about the future is important. Our positivity has a ripple effect and its waves will flow into our community and encourage those who are willing to roll up their sleeves to help us thrive for the next 70 years.

Y'hey lanu,
The month of Elul reminds us daily that the High Holy Days are approaching. Each morning we sound the Shofar at services, reminding us to begin our spiritual preparation for the Yamim Noraim / High Holy Days. This is not going to be the same for each of us, as no two minds are alike, just as no two faces are alike (Talmud - Berachot 58a). This year as we approach the High Holy Days, I find myself pondering the bigger questions. How do I best serve our community? Am I on track in my personal life? Have I been the kind of person I want to be? Am I on my path? I have decided in this article to take the opportunity to share some Jewish concepts that have deepened and sustained both my positive outlook and my spiritual practice, in the hope that some might find this meaningful.
In Elul we are asked to reflect and ask ourselves, am I on the path to become who I truly want to be. We begin taking stock of our lives, while taking steps towards becoming that elusive version of
ourselves, our very best self. This includes your inner voice and relationship with yourself. Are you taking care of yourself? Are you being kind to yourself, even when you make a mistake? Gentle reminder –perfection is an illusion, all we can do is try our best and when we make a misstep, learn from it, repair what we can and find a path forwards. This process includes your relationships with others and asking for forgiveness while making reparations when the situation calls for it. Mistakes are an accepted part of the human experience in Judaism and we have an entire time of the Jewish Calendar dedicated to fixing them. We all have bits of baggage to repair and release, that are no longer serving us. It is time to leave that weight behind. Things that are no longer serving us. Lessons learned, some the hard way. Teshuvah, though often translated as repentance, literally means to return. The word Chet which is often interpreted as sin, means to go astray. This means when you are straying from your path, you can choose to return and walk away from behaviors that are no longer serving you. Contrary to what some might perceive, we don’t dwell on our imperfections, or errors. This is not the Jewish way. We actively try to repair what we may have broken in the last year. Maimonides taught that the one who is truly penitent finds themselves with the opportunity to go astray again, yet decides not to. We can change, make different decisions next time and become better versions of ourselves.
Another layer of relationships we reflect on is our relationship with G-d. The Shema teaches us that G-d is one. Countless Jewish teachings seek to find a way to live in harmony with the world around us. When we go astray in the context of the Divine it is often looked at as encompassing ritual infractions like forgetting Shabbat or not keeping Kosher. In my mind, when we go astray from G-d we forget to live in harmony with creation. Afterall if you look deeply at the concepts behind Shabbat and Kashrut you might consider the intentions of the observances. Make space for gratitude, pause and be aware of how your week went and the week you are walking into, take time to rest and be introspective, be in the present, be thoughtful about what you eat and for those who eat meat, try to be kind to the animals that are serving your body as food sources. The whole world is G-d’s domain. This means that we should be respectful of it and aware as human beings of how our actions impact the world, so that we can live in a healthier way as part of the
beautiful tapestry of life that inhabits this incredible planet we call home.
I would like to plant the idea with you all, of making one small change this year. This could be making space for gratitude. This could be practicing acts of lovingkindness. This could be having a more thoughtful spiritual practice. You could join us at services, we would love to see you. It could be a change to your lifestyle so that you are taking better care of yourself, or cultivating awareness so you are more in tune with how your actions impact the world around you. If you have read this far you likely already know what you need to do to return, this is just a gentle reminder.
The truth of the matter is that what we do, makes a difference. Each one of us counts, our thoughts, words and actions impact those around us and the world around us. It’s ok if you feel you have been
going the wrong way for a while. You can return and build a life that honours your best and truest self. You too have the capacity for forgiveness. You too can help repair the broken pieces of the world. If you need me, or ever want to talk, sing, cry, daven, flex your spiritual muscles or play music, I’m your Cantor, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Wishing you a meaningful month of Elul, with a Good and Sweet Year to follow.
Scrolls should be scrolled from beginning to end each year to air out the parchment, prevent wearing down in one area and prevent the ink from fading and cracking. This year instead of our Clergy Team performing this sacred task on their own, Cantor Leslie invited those who have been regularly attending Minyan in person as well as those who had displayed a passion for preserving the tradition of reading and caring for scrolls of Torah to help us. Those who helped also took photos of key parashot and I tracked which scrolls from which part of the world they photographed in order to maintain better records for the future.

hear him daven alongside Cantor Leslie and Rabbi Mass. Yacov also provided an insightful session on Relational Judaism and how we can keep synagogues relevant for generations to come.
A month later, we welcomed back Rabbi Emeritus Rabbi Alan Green for a second Scholar in Residence program over the holiday of Shavuot. The series began with Tikun Leil Shavuot, which was held in partnership with Temple Shalom for another Two Congregation Under One Roof event. The evening featured a beautiful Erev Shavuot minyan service which was followed by a series of study sessions led by Rabbi Finkel of Temple Shalom, Rabbi Mass, and Rabbi Green. Each Rabbi shared important teachings on topics that they are passionate about, from Environmental Judaism to Transcendental Judaism. Of course, Tikun Leil Shavuot would not be complete without delicious cheesecakes from our catering team! It was such a treat to have Rabbi Green with us for our Shavuot services, lending his beautiful voice, insightful Torah commentary, and warm smile. We learned so much from him during the sessions that he led during the Scholar in Residence weekend, and we cannot wait to have him here for the High Holy Days!
Though so much of our late Spring and Summer months are spent preparing for the busy holiday cycle that comes in the Fall, we have still had an eventful few months!
This year, we were pleased to host not one, but two Scholar in Residence programs! In April, we welcomed Yacov Fruchter, Spiritual Leader and Director of Community Building and Spiritual Engagement at Congregation Beth Tzedec. Yacov was a wonderful addition to our Shabbat services, and it was such a pleasure getting to
The first of two holidays that take place in the summer is Tisha B’Av. This is a day in which we remember various tragedies throughout our history, particularly the destruction of the two temples. This day is marked by the chanting of Eicha (Lamentations). We are so fortunate to have Cantor Leslie who does such a beautiful job chanting this text. This year, we decided to bring the practice of chanting Eicha to the Asper Jewish Community Campus. Cantor Leslie’s voice echoed down Main Street at the AJCC, allowing many to get a taste of the traditions of Tisha B’Av.
We were so excited to bring back the Tu B’Av Tango program! Together with other organizations in our community, we gathered on a beautiful summer evening in August to celebrate the Jewish holiday of love. The Jewish Foundation Garden at the AJCC was the perfect backdrop for this lovely event. Attendees enjoyed delicious food and wine and were able to take part in Tango dancing lessons from professional dancers! This event was a wonderful way to connect with old friends, and make new connections. We are so thankful to
our community partners for all of their help with this event, and to Sobey’s on Taylor for donating Kosher food in support of the program.
We are busy getting ready for a special and meaningful High Holy Days. I hope that we will see you at the AJCC as we welcome in the new year together. There is so much to look forward to in 5784 and I look forward to sharing in these exciting moments with our congregation.
Shanah tovah u’metukah!

By now you should have all received Membership renewal letters from Cindy Singer our Membership Chair. In it she points out so many things we at Sisterhood have accomplished in the past year, and events to look forward to in the coming year. But I’d like to fill you in on a few more details.
IntraContinental Region of which Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood is a member, held its annual conference on line April 29 and 30, 2023. Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and Women’s League of Etz Chaim co-chaired this very successful event. Our keynote speakers Dr Ashira Myers Mass, Director of Laboratory Integration in the Office of Population and Public Health with Indigenous Services Canada and Rena Boroditsky CEO of The Chesed Shel Emes were very well received. Our Tikun Olam Project was gathering goods for Main Street Project’s Women’s Alcohol Recovery Centre chosen as it is housed at 146 Magnus, the former home of the Sharon Home. Next year’s conference will be in person and held in San Antonio, Texas May 18-21, 2024. Thanks to all of us working together, we have been awarded a Jewels in the Crown Award by Women’s League International! We met the criteria, and the award was presented at the Triannual Women’s League Convention in Schaumburg, Illinois July 16-19, 2023.
Unfortunately no one from Shaarey Zedek was able to attend in person, but it was streamed, so we were still able to attend.
I was able to log onto many interesting presentations. The On-going Presidents session had many suggestions, but most of all it taught me that volunteering allows one to gain INTEGRITY and RESPECT. Something that I feel I have gained in my years of being involved in Sisterhood.
Another program that touched my heart was the Tikun Olum project supported at the convention. The Shifrah and Puah Maternity Center in Uganda proves that it TAKES A VILLAGE TO MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE — One of the chairs of this program is Randy Schwartz from Winnipeg. Hopefully we will be able to have Randy give her presentation and also show the fascinating video on Jews of Uganda in the Fall.
I would like to thank Marisa Hochman, Cantor Leslie Emery and Primrose Madayag Knazan for their participation in the panel discussion at our 58 th Annual Interfaith Luncheon. Feedback was that it was a huge success and requests for a follow up have been received. So watch for information in the near future.
Tallit Weaving restarted with a spring 2023 daytime class. The fall class will also be daytime. Our chairpersons, Harriet Lyons and Carol Levi are putting out the word, looking for volunteers who are interested in working with and learning about the weaving program. This Labour of Love has been an integral program of Sisterhood for over 30 years. We all want to see this wonderful program continue and grow, and allow hand

woven Tallaism to continue to be apart of Shaarey Zedek Synagogue culture for years to come. So, if you have an interest in working with this amazing program, contact Harriet or Carol by leaving a message at the synagogue office or sending an email to sisterhood@szwinnipeg.ca.
Sisterhood Shabbat is back!! Chairs, Alice Weissmann, Bonnie Robinson and Deb Stern have advised that it will take place Shabbat October 14, 2023. Watch for more information.
Until further notice, we have no place for goods for Willow Place to be dropped off. If you have foods to donate, please contact Gloria Cantor by calling the synagogue office at 204-452-3711
and asking that Gloria call you back, or emailing sisterhood at sisterhood@szwinnipeg.ca.
Mark your calendars, Deb Stern Program Chair has a Program on Truth and Reconciliation planned for Sunday October 22, 3023 at 10:30 am at The Rady.
More info to come!
On behalf of Sandy Polanski and myself, Louise Raber, Co-Presidents of Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and the Sisterhood Board, we want to wish you all a Shana Tova U’metuka!
May the New Year bring you all good health and much happiness

Lucien Bernard, an up and coming French architect in 1942 German occupied Paris, is offered a large amount of money to design a hiding place for a Jewish person within the home of a wealthy Gentile industrialist. Lucien soon finds himself caught up in a collaboration he cannot back away from. Belfoures’ historical fiction novel is a beautiful and elegant story of an ordinary man’s descent into heroism. A must read!
