ave you planned for your funeral? Do you have a Will?
Wills: A Will is a legal document that sets out what your desires are in relation to how your possessions/estate should be distributed when you die. Even if you believe that you do not own much property or do not have many assets, you must still consider leaving your valuable sentimental items like artworks, jewellery, photographs etc. to certain people. If you do not have one, now is the time to look into it. You can make a simple Will by appointing an Executor who is responsible for ensuring that the terms of your Will are carried out. Your Will, once prepared, lasts until you die, unless of course you change or amend it. If you do not have a Will, the possessions that you own will be given to your relatives or next of kin according to a formula set out by “intestacy laws”. This could be very different from what you wanted or intended to happen. Accordingly, we would thoroughly advise you to proceed to have a Will prepared if you do not have one. With this in mind, Freedman & Gopalan suggests you think about the following when deciding to create or update your Will, and speaking to our
team about executing your Will… What you should include in your Will
Who: • You should clearly identify yourself as the creator of the Will and give enough information about yourself (such as your address) so that the document can clearly be identified as yours. • You should clearly name the parties you wish to include your Will and, again, list sufficient information about them so that they may be clearly identified. • You should also clearly state who you wish to be the Executor of the Will.
What: • What do you want to give away and in what proportion to each party? You should clearly list the assets you wish to leave in your Will.
How: • How do you want your assets distributed? You should think about the different situations through which this could occur – for instance, if one person passes away before another, how any assets left to them should be divided.
When:
• When do you want these assets to be distributed? For instance, if you would like to leave an inheritance for a loved one who is currently a minor, you should think about clearly indicating at which age any assets should be distributed.
the coffin, transportation, death Mittu Gopalan BAL, LLB certificate, permits, burials, cemetery plots and other related sundry expenses including flowers, newspaper notices, the wake etc.
These are merely questions that you should think about to ensure you understand the significance of having a thorough, clear and well-crafted Will. If you are seriously thinking about creating or updating your Will, it is always best to speak to an experienced solicitor and have them discuss your various options.
You can plan for your funeral by saving money in a high-interest bank account or by having a funeral bond (these can be arranged through a funeral director), prepaid funerals where you liaise with the funeral director about options and check your money is being put in a registered fund for safekeeping, or rely on your superannuation or life insurance death benefit payment which may cover your funeral costs or funeral insurance policies if you want to spare your loved ones from paying for your funeral. The Executor of your Will is responsible for organising your funeral and paying for it from your estate.
Funeral Planning: It is important that you are aware of your rights, your funeral provider/ insurer’s responsibilities and how to protect yourself for the things that can go wrong in relation to your funeral. A funeral can cost anywhere from $4,000 for a basic cremation to around $14,000 for a more elaborate casket, burial and flowers. Typically, the items you will need to pay for when arranging your funeral include the funeral director’s fees,
If you have any questions regarding your current Will or would like to have a Will drawn up, please do not hesitate to contact Freedman & Gopalan on 02 8917 8700.

An Easter Sermon from Kozhencheri
SUSIE ABRAHAM
Someone reported the Pulayan preacher’s version of the most holy story, twisted and narrated with swear words and rude gestures, to the senior priest and leaders of our church. They were horrified especially when they were told that he used foul language to narrate the conversion of Jesus. Their first reaction was to punish him severely and to ban him from speaking in public. This would have broken the poor man’s heart.
My native village Kozhencheri was predominantly a Christian community where caste system was very much alive. The ‘ Pulayar’ belonged to the poorest and lowest class in our society and even though the English missionaries converted many to Christianity they remained as social outcasts. They were not allowed to attend schools or our churches and were expected to do all the menial jobs. If they wanted to visit our homes they could come only up to the front or back yard and it was customary to speak to us with heads bent down and hands held in praying position.
to his heart, the preacher would jump up and down with joy like a child on a trampoline. Occasionally someone else in a bad mood would tell him off saying that his stories bored everyone to death and would ask him to go and preach somewhere else. Still undaunted, but with tears welling in his eyes, he would beg them not to
But every year the preacher had a captive audience during the Passion Week as he narrated the story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus with much dramatization. He would talk about Jesus getting beaten, abused, punished and finally crucified for the sins, which he did not commit.
But none of these rules applied to one particular Pulayan, a dark and small built man, whom the locals treated with kindness and generosity. He was a lay preacher. Dressed in shabby white Dhoti and shirt with a big red satin sash hung across his shoulder, everyday he stood in the middle of our bustling market place and narrated Bible stories in a simple and childlike manner to the passers by. On the sash the following words were embroidered boldly in white thread.
The preacher continued by saying that our Jesus did rise from the dead on the third day and appeared to his disciples and to some women secretly because he was smart not to get caught and crucified again by the conniving Jews. After a few days he zoomed up to heaven like a rocket! On his way up he looked down on earth and saw the Jews and the Roman soldiers who nailed him on the cross. It was at this time that Jesus decided to give them the ultimate parting message. “ Get lost, you bastards. While I am going up to heaven to join my father you will rot in hell!!” Then he would remind us that Jesus would come again and what a joy it would be to go with him.
Yeshu vegam varum”. Jesus is coming soon Since pulayars were denied the privilege of attending schools, they were illiterate and so I wondered as to who would have taught the preacher to read the Bible and groomed him to speak in public. Who gifted him the beautiful sash? I was curious to know the answers but no one else cared. No enthusiastic crowd gathered around to listen to his preaching. But his high-pitched shrill voice rose above all the market noises and we heard the same stories over and over, day after day. He would always end each session with the closing line “Jesus is coming soon and I am going with him, Are you ready to come along?” Some kind passers by would most often oblige by giving a positive response, which he was waiting to hear. At this magic reply, clutching his Bible close
heaven and simply weep. At this stage someone would give him a tumbler of cold water, which he would drink and also use it to wash his face. Surged with new energy and high excitement he would request everyone not to leave as the good news of the Easter message was yet to be told.
make fun of a poor Pulayan, a humble servant of God. His throat would be dry and parched by the end of the session and a cup of hot black coffee and a banana would be waiting for him at a widow’s coffee shop, which he would accept gratefully. Revived, he was ready for the next round.
Bursting with anger he would continue “ The bastard Jews and Roman soldiers did all these horrible things to my precious Lord. Like a lamb he suffered and died for all our sins and yet we are all sinners!” Unable to control his emotion he would look up to
Someone reported the Pulayan preacher’s version of the most holy story, twisted and narrated with swear words and rude gestures, to the senior priest and leaders of our church. They were horrified especially when they were told that he used foul language to narrate the conversation of Jesus. Their first reaction was to punish him severely and to ban him from speaking in public. This would have broken the poor man’s heart. But when their anger subsided the true message of Easter emerged - Forgiveness and Hope. Since the story was told from the heart of an innocent and lowly Pulayan, to whom basic literacy was denied by society, all was forgiven. So the Easter sermon, preached Pulayan style, in the middle of our market continued to be a hit with the locals for many more years.

Southy gone Northy! H
i everyone! It feels like forever since I have put pen to paper but it feels great to be back in the groove. Life has thrown quite a few obstacles in my path over the course of two years. Things have been up, down and all around; this has sometimes hindered me from the demanding requirements of being an adult. It was with my rollercoaster life that I decided that I needed a break. A rejuvenation; something that gives me happiness and purpose to keep working and growing in Sydney. I finally decided to book tickets to go to Jaipur and as some say, “broaden my horizons”. I have been wanting to do this for two or three years. I kept telling myself that once I finish my Masters I am going to North India. I finished my Masters and there was nothing to hold me back. So I booked my tickets, figured out accommodation and wrote down a list of must see places. I was on my way, sitting nervously at the departure gates at Sydney airport. Thoughts rushing through my brain from whether I will make it to Jaipur without hurling at least once (I suffer from travel sickness) to what will the culture be like. Travelling alone is a big step. It can really go both ways but if you have a supportive network of friends and family then hopefully you are encouraged to do it. I have been lucky enough that my parents have supported such decisions and trusted my judgment. If you are looking to do so then I think the only thing that will help you is to do your homework and let them know that in any situation you are capable of handling it. I decided to fly out alone to somewhere I did not know because it would awaken me; it would make me want to learn; to finally gain motivation and drive to understand things better. The new lessons I would learn I know I could bring back to Sydney and this
would put me back into the busy and demanding lives we lead. I urge every girl to go out and do it! Alone if you can! It is an experience you will never get otherwise! Jaipur is the capital and the largest city in the state of Raj-
asthan in North India. Clearly I had browsed through Instagram photos of Jaipur well beforehand so I knew I could expect incredible architecture and very rich culture. To my pleasant surprise, Jaipur did not disappoint at all, though there were many things that did shock me, which I will get to. I visited places like Birla Mandir carved from Marble; Amber Fort a magnificent palace carved of sandstone and marble overlooking a beautiful lake; Albert Hall museum that contains artefacts, paintings, clothes and crystals representative of the rich culture of Jaipur; Nahargarh fort which is a fort right at the top of a mountain overlooking Jaipur and is best visited at night whilst all the lights are on; Hawa Mahal which is a palace with 953 small windows to look out of. Honestly? I could go on because you can never truly discover a city. There is always much to experience.
Even my home in Sydney feels undiscovered. There are many places I need to go and venture out into and observe.
someone who knew the city well so I did not have to experience too much heckling.
Jaipur is also called “the Pink City”, with good reason. The city is painted in a beautiful earthy pink. All the build-
As a girl who is travelling to India, I expect to have many conservative faces looking (staring) at me, trying to decipher where I am from, ogling,
ings, the shops, the streets are all a streamline of pink. Casually, there are camels and elephants walking amongst the busy crowds. Watching the way the traffic works is breathtaking; in an exciting way and in an “I am going to die if I sit in car in this traffic” way. Being a Malayalee I thought Kerala traffic and road rules were absurd but driving around in Ubers in Jaipur, I am glad to be alive to tell my story. Speaking of Ubers, travelling around Jaipur I found it the cheapest option of travel. So definitely get a sim card and internet so you can book Ubers because Auto and cycle rickshaw drivers charge literally double or more of the actual price. The only reason as to why this is, is probably because Jaipur is a tourist hot spot. The food, the clothes, the transportation and anything else is very expensive if you are not a local and don’t know your way around the city. Luckily, I had
cat calling, whistling and even more. I had been informed that Jaipur is quite ahead of its time and rather modern so I shouldn’t worry. Since I am a Keralite I snickered on the inside and said to myself “oh please, it’s India, how modern could it be”. Once I landed there I understood and was forced to eat my words. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to wear tights and a short top, a skirt, even a dress and not be ogled at or followed by men. Ofcourse, when I visited the old city it was more prominent but overall I was able to wear whatever I would wear in Sydney and not feel uncomfortable. Right then and there, it set the tone for my trip. I was able to feel comfortable in what I wore or how I walked without needing to conform to the standards of where I was. To be honest, the people I dealt with all knew English because I only spoke to people in high end malls, my hotel or shops. A lot of
the dealing with transportation and everyday people was dealt with by my travel buddy. So I think that is an experience I have yet to discover. One thing I know for sure is that Sydney could never beat Jaipur in are their cafes, ?? res-
taurants and bars! Every place I went to they were all neck to neck with their ideas, presentation, food creations and ambience. I went to a café that has scooters screwed down to the floor and we could sit on it and eat at a high top table. I went to rooftop restaurants and tea bars quite often for the late night view, along with live Gazals and hot tea. The tea bar even served their hot ginger tea with Parle G biscuits! You can only imagine the true blue Indian came out of me as I sank into the melodious voice of a live singer and the stars above me gleaming. Jaipur is truly like no other, if you want the mad rush and busy flea markets you will find it. If you want the luxury and comfort with culture in the mix, you will find it. There is something there for everyone and I can safely say that I have left a piece of me behind.

the desire to be loved could be considered as the most basic and fundamental need which is central to our happiness. This must be the reason that our elderly parents in aged care homes feel so rejected and unwanted though their physiological needs are met without fail.. Leena Mercy
The Lady I Met W
hen I first saw this lady she was very depressed and withdrawn. She didn’t want to talk much. It was very difficult to engage her. Her daughter was not particularly impressed with the Mental Health services and thought her mother would only need some recreational activities to feel better. After a few p e rs i s t e n t , continuous visits, a rap-
port began to form between her and me . Then one day she shared her story with me. She was a victim of child abuse by her own father. Her mother knew about it but couldn’t do much about it as there were four other children younger than her and her father was the only bread winner. Unable to cope up, at the age 12 she tried to commit suicide but survived. Later she got married and witnessed her own husband molesting their own child. Eventually she separated from her husband and tried
to escape with their children. When her husband’s new partner found out about this plan, she and her children were brutally attacked. Eventually she managed to come to Australia with her children. She told me she had never experienced any happiness love or kindness in her life. She was depressed and thought people were following her and trying to harm her. She never trusted anyone.
This was the first time I met a woman who bore such complex issues and sorrows in her life. Even after hours of conversation with her, she couldn't tell me a single occasion when she felt happiness in her life or felt loved by anyone. Both her father and husband were equally abusive towards her and there was no one to help her. She thought she was a failure as a daughter wife and mother. While the treatment was progressing, one day she died unexpectedly. I just couldn't accept it. A deep helplessness swallowed me completely
and I cried shamelessly when I heard the news. Somewhere deep within me I wanted to see her laugh again, to feel loved and to experience what kindness was. I felt myself as a failure when she died without receiving any of these feelings, which only a human could have given to another. If we look at Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs”, the first basic need is physiological need such as food, shelter, air and water; then it goes up to safety, belonging and so on. With this lady the first need in the hierarchy was the only one which was ever met in her entire life. She had never experienced anything above. She never felt safe and never experienced the feeling of belonging. As a result she never developed any selfesteem. I asked around a few friends of mine the question what makes him/her feel accepted in this world. The answers were consistent, everyone thought being loved or the feeling of being needed gives the feeling of acceptance and a meaningful life. My lady never got a chance to feel that she was accepted in this world before she died. She was in constant fear always. She felt rejected and she didn't have any meaning in her life. She had her physiological needs met which enabled her to survive in this world, but she never felt accepted. Realizing that love can change the way one feels about his /her existence. Love gives you the feeling of being needed. When u feel needed a feeling of purpose and well being is created. Therefore the desire to be loved could be considered as the most basic and

fundamental need which is central to our happiness. This must be the reason that our elderly parents in aged care homes feel so rejected and unwanted though their physiological needs are met without fail. They don't feel that they are loved anymore therefore they have no reason to feel they are accepted by their family or society. In aculture where love is seen as falling in or taken for granted, “The Art of Loving” , a wonderful book by Erich Fromm explains love as an active art not a passive falling into. Like any other art, loving is an art which requires discipline, concentration and patience to master it.If love is an art, he says that “it requires knowledge and effort” . No one can become a master at anything overnight. Even if a person carries within himself the promise and talent of a master, he must still persevere through many thousands of hours of learning and practice to demonstrate the skill. Only after this mastery, will he find the practice deeply satisfying and even easy. According to Fromm ‘“There are many people, for instance, who have never seen a loving person, or a person with integrity, or courage or concentration. It is quite obvious that in order to be sensitive to oneself, one has to have an image of complete, healthy human functioning.” This indeed explains why my lady felt the way she felt throughout her life. I wonder...did anyone feel her absence after she died… I don’t know. I guess she will stay with me as a sad memory for rest of my life.

The Empty
The tears left unanswered, The thoughts that unwound, The miseries that hovered, All in one bewildered moment. Entranced in the enigmatic daze That encircled , Peppered with the old shattered leaves, As Filth of erstwhile seem to reach - out to the shadows Stretching to the future that stared coldlyunfaithfully. Hatred everywhere -Unbounded, world - self-obsessed , And I , With a shaky present And unprecedented tomorrow. (Note: How can one say that tomorrow will be unprecedented?) Tormented by the storms , That shattered the windows that once overlooked The love of tomorrow ..
The moment she wished Never existed The unforgivable of all... The moment, she once thought never chained her but, That kept rattling with time. The moment .... where The entrance-exits of life Coincides! Why does she go for it ? Why does she act GOD?
Cradle Why is world so brutal to her? Why is everyone devoid of feelings? The excuses are exceptional But nil satisfying she remains in solitude Yet with a heart That glared at the woman in her, Tagging her A murderess .. as the restless cries of the non-existent keeps darting her sleep deprived darks...
I shut my eyes tight; Only To Open : Into a day of somewhere , Where endless wonder awaits In Those infinite meadows of time That blooms of happinessHappiness of just being me - alive !
Nirvana
Candles flickeringRotten time ; Pace slowing darkness shroud; Unseen shadowsStalk frail; Amidst miseriesPromising agonies, Never ends The lust for tomorrow! Mocking silhouette Outshines, a whimsical EmbraceYet Spiritual! Quickening ambersResolve : To a pile Of Unwanted wax !
A Formless manifestation Through Unstitched Time, De mystifying Seamless Infinity beyond : Transcending statesFrom momentary Euphoria , To Touch upon: The coveted eventuality And there it isDrawing closer and Closer..! Peace ..peace .. And peace... The final destiny Nirvana!
