Post Disaster Children Space in Labuhan, Pandeglang, Banten Competition Entry in collaboration with M. Ilham Akbar and Fransiskus Asisi Dwinugroho P.
In December 2018, a landslide of Anak Krakatau triggered a tsunami hitting the coasts of Banten and Lampung. Pandeglang, Banten, has the highest number of casualties and damages. There are 4761 refugees in Pandeglang, spread to different refugee camps. Banten governor ordered the construction of emergency school tents for refugees while houses and schools are still repaired. Schools have a significant role in helping communities cope with natural disasters (Mutch,2018). Schools give familiarity for children, distracted by routinity amidst disaster’s uncertainties. They also accomodate trauma healing, such as children retelling experiences to find closure and alleviate guilt, or group art performances to gather strength and hope. Schools also build community resillience, becoming a platform for students, parents, and teachers to discuss disaster preparedness and family/community rebuilding.
