Bowling for Columbine • Beginning of film as we need a film with voiceover. • Archive footage with diegetic sound - make us believe it/ real/ accurate - also creates enigma/what is this/ what’s its purpose – a mystery – makes you wonder meaning - old sound - black and white, - formally presented - in the army – costume - strange way to open film – trying to be funny,

Patriot music, old military music links to solider general slight sarcastic tone in his voiceover – realised later – when president bombs country we can’t pronounce – doing in a typical voice of god way but it’s the word that make it sarcastic – dark sense of humour – making a point/truthful – changes the tone of the situation at this point – satire – political point, criticising his country, makes the point that America are proud of their ‘accomplishments’ – start understanding the direction of the film at this point. • Painting a mood of a story – images match what he says – parallel sound- literal meaning • Literal – expository doc typical

Illusion - bias –America is crazy, woman in bikini holding m16 is normal, he is saying this is what America is like – he is only showing us that – done in a smart way – each image matches what he says make audience agree with this but when he changes the image to match the point he is trying to make then the audience also believe him again because the rest have matched – he is manipulating the audience to agree with his point – done in a subtle way. This is why the sound is important in this section, because it gives him control to put across his point done all through non diegetic sound. ‘I want the bank account with free gun’ = done for the audience = also putting across his bias by ridiculing the idea of a bank giving you a gun = the matter of fact answer supports his point, the fact that it’s the ‘norm’. Reiterating his point with voice of god and gun/bank advert = proof/ evidence/ fact Goes from diegetic to non diegetic – this is him giving us information/fact Goes back to scene in the bank, diegetic sound – there is a sound bridge much like you would use in a fictional film - similar technique – way into criticising the technique – used to create a illusion but evidence of his manipulation to the audience. Reiteration g his point that the bank that the bank is stupid – a whole manual of guns, back to shot that we know that the sound comes from – Insert edit.
Bowling for Columbine • Used a cut of a security lorry to bring in talk about the volt – to match the point he is trying to create – informal interview in the situation – repeats what she says to make it clear to the audience – reinforcing his point – guns on the wall to add to the point done this three times guns on wall, van and booklet. • Remember to quote the DIALOGUE!
