Chloe Smith Interview EXEMPLAR Jeremy Paxman’s interview with Chloe Smith during hard news television programme News Night, demonstrates a comba9ve interview technique. This is shown when Chloe Smith says ‘I can’t give you all the gory details’, Jeremy responds aaer much repe99on on the same reply ‘Did it happen today’, changing the inflic9on of the word ‘today’ to a higher pitch sugges9ng a sarcas9c tone. The tone suggests an acacking interview strategy, comba9ve, as he has not gocen the answer he wants so he instead tries to belicle her into giving answer i.e. to not be able to answer that ques9on must make her seem incompetent. He con9nues with this saying ‘You can’t remember’, said in quite a patronising tone, to demonstrate his frustra9ons, and then lays out his cards so to speak by saying ‘Well why isn’t it appropriate? You’re coming here to defend a change in policy? And you can’t even tell me when you were told what the change in policy was?’. When he asks this last ques9on, he uses it as a chance to both summarise what has happened thus far ‘you can’t even tell me’, sugges9ng she’s said nothing and uses mul9ple ques9ons in order to pressure her into giving the answer he is looking for, demonstra9ng the comba9ve element of the interview, i.e. he is figh9ng for the answer, which also suggests that the purpose is informal, to provide audience answers .
