Annie Cooperstein had a unique hiding place for $25,000 in jewels Annie Cooperstein’s Mug Shot

RATS! HIDDEN DIAMONDS 1907 THE RAT A mound of artificial or real hair used to add height or volume to a woman’s hairstyle..

16 Shades MAGAZINE | Cops And Robbers 2013

In 1907, twenty year old Annie Cooperstein was employed as a domestic in the home of Thomas Simon, a shirtwaist manufacturer in New York City. In May of that year, jewelry disappeared from the Simon home and its loss was reported to the police. Annie, who had only been employed for a week, was questioned by Lt. Andrew J. McNulty of the West 125th Street Station. She claimed to know nothing of the missing jewels. A claim McNulty did not believe. Later than night, Annie told her employer she needed to see a physician and left the residence, only to be arrested just outside the door. McNulty had been waiting and with the assistance of Mrs. Simon searched young Annie. They found nothing. McNulty then asked Annie to let down her hair. Cleverly concealed in her rat, in an old stocking, were three gold rings, three gold plated rings, a gold watch set with diamonds, a half dozen stick pins, and a diamond starburst valued at $25,000. “That feels better,” said the unrepentant maid. “My head has been top heavy for the last two days. But my, I never thought you would search the rat!” New York World, 1907.

After “running and hiding from every American lawman's gun,” according to historian Georgie Fame TAP/SELECT, Bonnie and Clyde “advanced their reputation and made their graduation into the banking business.” A likely-‐not-‐apocryphal description of a Barrow gang operation is characterized thus by Professor Fame:

“Reach for the sky,” sweet-‐talking Clyde would holler

As Bonnie loaded dollars

into a dewlap bag.

How much Bonnie contributed to the smoothness of the Barrow operation is not clear. But she had the public's attention. Indeed, she had the public’s affection as well. In the Depression era, anybody who could “stick it to” the banks was a hero to a great number of Americans. The gang was constantly a step ahead of law

enforcement. However, they had a close call at Joplin, Missouri, in April, 1933. They had hidden out in a rented apartment in Joplin. The local police did not know who the suspicious-‐acting group were, but organized a small raid on the apartment. After a gun_ight, the gang got away. When the police entered the apartment from which the gang had _led, they found a treasure trove of evidence, including a number of photographs. They also discovered poems, stories, and other writings by Bonnie Parker. The Joplin photographs are the most often displayed photos of the Barrow gang (other than mugshots). In fact, it was through the Joplin photographs that most of the nation _irst came to see the faces of the gang. Social historian Georgie Fame characterizes the essence of Bonnie's writings as follows:

INSPECTOR’S MODEL From Professional Criminal of America Thomas Byrnes 1886

INSPECTOR’S MODEL Replaced the detective with the photographer Darkness & Daylight Thomas Byrnes 1893

Police Photography AKA CELL-FIES Police photography is almost as old as photography itself. One of the _irst mentions is in a British photography magazine where it discussed photographs being taken of bodies found _loating in the Thames. The photographs were shown to the families for identi_ication. In 1846 Mathew Brady photographed prisoners in New York City’s Blackwell’s Island prison. The daguerrotype images were published in The Rational of Crime, a phrenological reformist publication in that same year. Switzerland was the _irst country to mention crime-‐scene photography as early as 1860. By the 1850s, police departments such as San Francisco’s were keeping rogues’ gallery collections of daguerreotypes of criminals for identi_ication. Isaiah Lees, the _irst Captain of Detectives in the San Francisco Police Department, used his own money to pay to have criminals photographed. Other major police departments were soon to follow. New York, London 1870, and Paris 1874. By the 1880s most respectable police departments and private agencies such as Pinkerton’s had mug shot books. In 1886 New York City Police Inspector Thomas F. Byrnes (pictured opposite) wrote and published the book Professional Criminals of America _illed with rogues’ gallery photographs and captions describing their crimes. Byrnes’ purpose in writing the book was to suppress criminal activity having made the criminals widely known. Unfortunately, the criminals loved their notoriety.

Photographer As Con Man Yes, even photographers had a criminal element.

A _ine line separates the salesman from the con_idence-‐man. In the world of photography it was not unknown for a “here today -‐ gone tomorrow” photographer to cross the line of legitimacy. In the 1890, How ‘Tis Done: A Thorough Ventilation of the Numerous Schemes Conducted by Wandering Canvassers Together with the Various Advertising Dodges for the Swindling of the Public warned the public: This is a scheme which has been operated for some time, but never to so great an extent as now. The agent may tell you the artist has just returned from Paris, where he drew a gold medal for superior artistic skill, and having received many requests to visit your locality by parties familiar with his work in Paris, has consented to do a little work here and give the people an opportunity of securing the highest degree of art at the lowest prices, when the probability is the “French Artist” is a cheap country photographer who could not make a living where his work is known. There are so many schemes on orders for enlarged photographs _inished in oil, India ink, water color, etc., that we can only say: “If you wish for anything of this kind, visit your photographer, and he will undoubtedly do better work, give you a better frame, and at a living prices.” The Weber Brothers, F. Joseph and Charles H., of Erie, Pennsylvania, went so far as to warn their customers on their backstamp. Don’t trust those traveling photograph bummers. This warning came in 1872, eighteen years before the How ‘Tis Done article. Seems the con had been around for some time. 38 Shades MAGAZINE | Cops And Robbers 2014

The Detective Camera The term “detective camera” denoted any camera which was designed to look like something else or was small enough to be used in public without the subject being aware that he or she was being photographed. Cameras appeared on the market and in the streets, in many disguises. They took the form of binoculars, watches, purses, parcels, walking sticks, revolvers and ri_les, alarm clocks, and spyglasses. The Scovill & Adams Company manufactured the Book Camera of 1892. It was disguised as a bundle of three schoolbooks, titled, French, Latin and Shadows. Some of the most popular types of detective cameras were hidden in clothing (Edmund & Leon Bloch’s Photo-‐Cravate), a string from the shutter was pulled in the pocket in order to take the photograph. Paul Martin, a famous photographer of the 1890s, used a Facile camera which was manufactured to look like a parcel tied with string; it was operated by carrying it under one arm. People at once jumped to the conclusion that every policeman would carry a detective camera, and would make crime almost impossible by its vigilant operation. We now know that this is all moonshine, and that to obtain a picture of a man who does not parade in public more than necessity compels is a very dif_icult matter indeed. The Photographic News, 1835.

The County Court had appropriated $10,500 for the building site on North Folger Street and that amount included the construction costs. The ease with which the old jail could be broken into, prisoner escapes, and the extreme unsanitary conditions prompted the appropriation. During John Hawkins’ time as Sheriff in 1867, someone had excavated under the jail and removed the stones from underneath the vault where the papers of the County Clerk and large sums of money belonging to the County were kept. The thieves were a few days late and $7,000 short, the money having been deposited in the bank just days before. Unfortunately, the Sheriff had kept his own money in the vault and sustained a large loss. The County had learned its lesson and moved to correct the situation, to the bene_it of the newly elected Sheriff Campbell. The jail had been built with the Sheriff’s living quarters included. When John was elected, Sarah was elected as well, for it was expected she would cook the meals served to the prisoners. Sarah was very fortunate, for as of March 12, 1881; there had been no prisoners and no meals. In an article in the Carroll Record the editor described Carrollton as having a good jail, “for which we have at present no use.” The duties of the Sheriff in Carrollton in 1880 were many and varied. The Sheriff paid the bills for all court related expenses, maintained the jail, transported the prisoners to the courthouse, and conducted Sheriff’s sales. The sheriff was paid a _lat fee for individual portions of the work and a percentage of the civil cases and sales. John Campbell’s job wasn’t all paperwork. Carrollton was still in its infancy and this part of Missouri was considered the West, the edge of the frontier. It had its fair share of murder and manslaughter. During his term as Sheriff it fell to John and his men to apprehend them. A man named Alex Powell was wanted for murder and had been spotted in Mandeville. John went out to _ind him and Cousin Will Graham gave an account of the arrest to Frank Tull. This is the story as it was recorded in the Campbell – Graham Manuscript: “I remember when your grandfather, John Campbell came to Mandeville to arrest Alex Powell. Cousin John Campbell was Sheriff of Carroll County and came right over there to the house where I live now and asked my father if

The email exchange that followed the discovery of John Campbell’s photograph.

When I received your email this morning I must admit I cried. I have searched for so long in so many places for this photograph. From historical societies to state archives, the Sheriff's historian for Carroll County, and trips to Montana and Missouri. And now the journey is almost over. It's rather emotional. Particularly for my Aunt who is the only living child of Otey Campbell, John’s grandson. She has always wondered. And now she will know. Thank you so very much! - Linda Your beautiful flowers came this morning in a darling teapot. Soon after a dear friend stopped by to bring me a book that her sister-in-law has written. She was so taken with the flowers, and the book she took a photo with my I-pad.I decided that this would be my thank you note and you could see your lovely bouquet.I shall enjoy them so much. Just as a side note I am a sculptor, still working at 86. You can look up my web site www.sabratullmeyer.com. i am so happy that you were pleased with the photo. - Sabra

Further Reading The Inventor and the Tycoon: A Gilded Age Murder and the Birth of Moving Pictures by Edward Ball From the National Book Award-winning author of Slaves in the Family, a riveting true life/true crime narrative of the partnership between the murderer who invented the movies and the robber baron who built the railroads.

AMAZON THE LIBRARY

One hundred and thirty years ago Eadweard Muybridge invented stop-motion photography, anticipating and making possible motion pictures. He was the first to capture time and play it back for an audience, giving birth to visual media and screen entertainments of all kinds. Yet the artist and inventor Muybridge was also a murderer who killed coolly and meticulously, and his trial is one of the early instances of a media sensation. His patron was railroad tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, whose particular obsession was whether four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground at once. Stanford hired Muybridge and his camera to answer that question. And between them, the murderer and the railroad mogul launched the age of visual media. Set in California during its frontier decades, The Tycoon and the Inventor interweaves Muybridge's quest to unlock the secrets of motion through photography, an obsessive murder plot, and the peculiar partnership of an eccentric inventor and a driven entrepreneur. A tale from the great American West, this popular history unspools a story of passion, wealth, and sinister ingenuity. Description and bookcover courtesy Amazon.

Mamie Kelly Mary Elizabeth Kelly First Communion Photograph ca. 1885

A Photograph

commemorating murder You never know when you research an old photograph where it will take you. THE MURDER The young girl in this typical _irst communion photograph is Mary (Mamie) Elizabeth Kelly. She was thirteen years old and a student in Mrs. Armstrong's eighth grade class at John Swett Grammar School on McAllister street near Gough in San Francisco, California. She was a thirteen year old in 1886, a child. Very much more naive and immature than the thirteen year olds of today. On 10 November, at approximately 3pm Mamie was dismissed from school and started walking home with Eveline Kelly (no relation) one of her classmates. Mamie was wearing a red dress with a checked apron and a wide brimmed straw hat with a dash of red ribbon wound around it. Her brown hair was in the typical school girl fashion of the day, pushed back from her face with a circular comb falling into a

braid over her shoulder. She carried a wicker-‐work lunch basket and her school books. The two young girls arrived at the corner of Polk and McAllister streets at about 3.15pm where Mamie was approached by 19 year old Alex Goldenson, who called to Mamie. Mamie told Eve she would see what he wanted. Mamie walked down Ash with Goldenson, Eve waited for her at the corner. On the northeast corner of Polk street and Ash Avenue, directly in front of the grocery store on Polk, Mamie and Goldenson stopped to talk. After a few moments Goldenson pulled a gun from his pocket, yelled "Take that and go," and shot Mamie just above the right eye at very close range. Mamie dropped to the ground quivering and died instantly from the bullet that pierced her brain. Upon hearing the

It angered him that his father did not appear to be better dressed for their last meeting. His mother and brothers arrived later in the day and stayed until nine o'clock. When

on the story

ONLINE SAFETY Because your “news” will often include personal information -‐ such as birthdays and travel photos -‐ that aren’t appropriate for public sites or social networks, having a limited access site for your family’s news center is important. Your reporters should be briefed -‐ regularly -‐ on what is and isn’t appropriate for online publishing. And, as the editor/ publisher, you’ll want to review content and remove any questionable content when necessary. Online email platforms such as Yahoo! offer family accounts that will provide your cub reporter with his or her own email address while a parent maintains oversight on how the account is being used. This will give your reporter the ability to submit assignments and publish stories via email while providing privacy limits. You can learn more about Yahoo’s family accounts at http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/family/basics. You might also check with your own email provider to see if they offer anything similar. TOOLS App phones like the iPhone, Android and Windows phones are perfect for this purpose but may not survive a youngster’s rough handling. One excellent alternative is an iPod Touch with both front (Face Time) and back (photo/video) cameras. Both 4th and 5th generation models have these features. A camera is needed to include photographs with the story and the front (webcam) camera can also be used with apps like Face Time or Skype to conduct interviews with distant relatives. While the iPod Touch is not cheap, used and reconditioned ones can be found on eBay or Craig’s List at very reasonable prices. TRAINING AND ASSIGNMENTS Show how serious you are by de_ining your reporter’s responsibilities, deadlines and submission guidelines. You can create a PDF document they can carry on their iPod Touch for easy reference.
