A

2022–2023 Leadership Volunteers

From the Head of School & Chair of the Board of Trustees

Our

Mission Shady Hill School fosters joyful, active learning informed by multiple perspectives—empowering students to be intellectually adventurous and wholeheartedly just. We are excited to share this Report on Philanthropy with the Shady Hill community. Inside are details about some of the special moments that occurred last year as we moved out of the pandemic. Our theme was Resetting to Move Forward, and we were delighted to reset by inviting families back to campus for treasured traditions such as the Black History Assembly, Grandfriends Day, and May Day. These traditions weave generations of Shady Hill students into the fabric of our school and our history, connecting today’s students to the students of long ago. We’re proud of the fact that no matter what challenges Shady Hill faces — skunks under the kindergarten building or a global pandemic — our traditions and our investment in building a caring community help us thrive. This report also includes a summary of the strategic planning work that we began last year. (See page 4.) We are grateful to the many stakeholders in our community who provided their reflections and feedback on Shady Hill’s future priorities. We look forward to sharing more about the strategic plan with the community this year. As always, the financial support of our donors is a vital part of what makes Shady Hill’s commitment to joyful, active learning possible. We extend our heartfelt thanks to every donor listed in this report and to those who wish to remain anonymous. Just as our school traditions endure, so does our appreciation for your support. Every gift of every size makes Shady Hill stronger.

WE BELIEVE • Play and discovery are central to every child’s growth and true exploration takes time. • The purpose of knowledge is to create meaning, develop understanding, and inspire action. • Growing up is a nuanced process and mistakes are catalysts for deeper learning and progress. • A strong, interdependent community is the framework for academic confidence and social and emotional health. • Practicing genuine kindness towards oneself and others helps build a compassionate world. • We have a responsibility—as individuals and as a community—to honor difference, challenge prejudice, and strive for racial and social justice.

Sincerely,

Mark J. Stanek Head of School 2010–present

Alyssa Haywoode Chair, Board of Trustees 2022–present 1

Cover: May Day returned 100% to its pre-pandemic format, bringing the entire community together in joyful celebration.

Shady Hill School is immensely grateful to the many generous, talented, and committed volunteers in our community. This listing by no means captures every one of the hundreds of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends of the school who gave their time and talents to benefit the Shady Hill community in the 2022-23 school year. Everywhere you turn, volunteers are enriching our school’s programming, student experience, fundraising efforts, and faculty & staff. Thank you for your commitment to Shady Hill School!

It had been a decade since the last strategic plan was completed in 2013 at Shady Hill, and the time had come to begin working on the next one. During the 2022-23 school year, a steering committee of Board members, faculty, administration, alumni and parents led an engagement process with all constituents to hear their thoughts on Shady Hill’s priorities for the future. This inclusive, feedbackrich process allowed participants to share their ideas in person, by zoom and through written responses. The feedback and priorities were approved by the Board and will serve as our compass for the next three to five years. The three priority areas to come out of this process are:

Priority One: Strengthen the Academic Program SHS will reinvest in our overall academic program to adapt to the changing needs of today’s world. We will continue to maintain our unique campus in order to enhance learning. Priority Two: Reimagine the Employee Journey The heart of Shady Hill is its faculty and staff who need to be fully supported and fairly compensated. We will focus on strengthening our culture to attract and retain the most talented faculty and staff so they may thrive professionally and personally. Priority Three: Reinvigorate our Community The power of the Shady Hill community has allowed us to exist for over 100 years. We will rebuild connections and engage in innovative strategies, while ensuring access and belonging for all members of our community. Each area has specific initiatives that will support these priorities in achieving the goals set out by the strategic plan. We have created seven working groups of faculty and staff that will work throughout the year to develop a work plan for each priority. The working groups will focus on the following areas: • Learning support • Student experience and programming • Thematic studies/central subject • Technology use in education • Parent engagement and support • Employee wellness and support • Access and belonging We are excited to dig in and begin working on our new strategic plan!

While my family is no longer at Shady Hill, I continue to give annually as a way of ensuring our connection continues, and in hopes that our gifts will help enable other families to have as wonderful a connection to the school as we have had over the last six decades. I grew up a five minute walk from the school, so the physical plant and the fields were very much a part of my upbringing. My father served as President of the Board of Directors back in the ‘60s and ‘70s when my siblings and I attended, and both of my children went to Shady Hill as well: Travis ‘10 and Lindsay ‘13. Our generations have come and gone, but Shady Hill has stood the test of time since it was founded in 1915 and has only improved over the ages! Helen Bouscaren ’72

We know that the things that make SHS so special — such as attracting the best teachers, maintaining the beautiful campus, and helping fund financial aid — would not be possible without the community’s strong support for the Shady Hill Fund. So we give enthusiastically to the Shady Hill Fund and hope that all families will give as much as they can.” Ted and Andrea Killory

In Memoriam: Richard P. Evans ’51 February 6, 1936 – June 30, 2023 Richard “Dick” Evans ’51 holds an indelible place in Shady Hill history, as one of the School’s first Black students and its first Black graduate. In recent years, Dick re-engaged energetically with the Shady Hill alumni office, collaborating on a 2021-22 Magazine article about his experience as a student, attending the 2022 Reunion on campus, and taking part in the School’s first-ever intergenerational gathering for Black alumni. This reconnection prompted Dick to accept the position of Class Correspondent, a job he did with great dedication, as evidenced in the 2023 Shady Hill Magazine’s Class Notes section. Sadly, a sudden health decline took Dick’s life in June 2023; all of Shady Hill is poorer for this loss.

Dick’s wife Charlotte says, “Shady Hill meant so much to Dick. He always said his nine years there shaped him in important ways—from his love of the classics, Shakespeare and the theater to the training he got in his shop class. I still use a wooden footstool he made in sixth or seventh grade replete with a horse decal on each end! Dick’s daughter Stephanie adds, “Even at the end, in the hospice, he was talking up Shady Hill to the employees, urging them to look into it for their children.”

Dick was the embodiment of lifelong learning, constantly taking courses through the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement, as well as volunteering there. Dick’s thirst for continuous learning was legendary, as was his enthusiasm for technology, his devotion to his family, and his general kindness and gregariousness. To read Dick’s reflections on his boundary-breaking childhood, go to www.shs.org/DickEvans or scan the QR code at left. As someone who adored gadgets, Dick would be opting for the QR code.

GRADE I

Shady Hill was — and remains — important to my whole family. My sister and I both found Shady Hill to be intellectually electrifying. And to this day, we count Shady Hill classmates among our lifelong friends. Our parents, now in their 80’s, say the same about the friendships they forged among fellow Shady Hill parents. Going back even further, my greataunt was best friends in college with Mary Eliot, who went on to become a beloved teacher from the late 1940s through the 80s. It’s a no-brainer for me to stick with the school as an annual donor, paying forward the place it holds in our hearts.”

one memorable project has students try to keep the homes they’ve built on top of sand mounds safe from flowing river water. Pouring real water through their model settlements enhances their understanding of soil erosion and the properties of water.

GRADE III The musical True Courage (A Whaling Adventure) is a beloved fixture in the Grade III Whales and Whaling curriculum. Written by music teacher Mr. Sen ’92, TTC’07, the play is set on an 18th century American whaling ship. Mr. Sen directs each Gradehead section in their own production, and by the end of the spring, every single Grade III student knows the script by heart, especially the catchy songs.

All lower school students look forward to Grade IV’s deep dive into Ancient Greece. One of the year’s many highlights are the Hades Plays, in which each Gradehead section creates their own original script. Students often make use of blacklights, with masks and props doused in fluorescent paint, for a mesmerizing effect that really brings the Underworld to life.

GRADE V Grade V’s embrace of China as a Central Subject came about twenty years ago, making it Shady Hill’s newest Central Subject. Students love kicking off the year with a field trip to Boston’s Chinatown, where they visit many traditional shops, enjoy a restaurant meal, and help one another eat with chopsticks.

GRADE VI One of Grade VI’s memorable projects, as they study Africa, is the creation of masks in wood shop. Each student designs and creates their own mask, using symbolism to convey aspects of their identity. When the masks are then displayed in Assembly Hall, the skillful craftsmanship impresses the entire community, as does the tremendous breadth of self-expression.

My granddaughter entered Shady Hill School as a kindergartener. With a curious mind, a love of the outdoors, and an active explorer, Shady Hill School—a believer that play and discovery are vital to each child’s growth—provides an excellent learning environment for her and others like her. Each day of her first year was spent enthusiastically getting to school to learn. I learned a few things I did not know in sharing her knowledge. I hope her enthusiasm for learning persists in the years to come. For these reasons and many more, I’m proud to support Shady Hill as a donor and a grandparent volunteer.” Marilyn Grant

Biko Mangcu Memorial Playground In the fall of 2021, Shady Hill began to redesign the playgrounds that serve our youngest students, prompted by the age and condition of the play structures there. Mark Stanek formed a committee of lower school teachers, who began meeting regularly with the School’s architects, learning about equipment and layout options, and making selections that would best support the ages they teach. At that time, the notion that our community would lose a cherished Beginner student was the furthest thing from anyone’s mind. Then Memorial Day Weekend of 2022 brought the devastating news that 4-year-old Biko Mangcu had drowned, thrusting the whole Shady Hill community into shock and grief. Some months later, Mark conferred with Biko’s family about how best to memorialize him. Biko’s mother, Sipho Mangcu, on hearing about the playground renovation, immediately chose this project. “Biko was never happier than when he was exploring new playgrounds! Playgrounds were his happy place; he’d instantly make friends with whoever he met there, and he’d never want to leave.” Donors to the Playground, in Memory of Biko Mangcu:

With the family’s blessing, we invited community support for the playground, and the gifts poured in. Coming together around a visible, enduring project like this – one so naturally resonant of Biko’s passions – helped channel community members’ individual and collective grief.

He will always be part of recess now.” We are touched beyond words at the strong support this project elicited. Deep thanks to all the donors listed below – and to future donors whose gifts are still coming in.

Faculty Funds

A strong endowment means a strong future, and at the same time, reflects a loving and appreciative past. Endowments last forever, growing through skilled investment management and through new gifts -- and sometimes whole new funds -- added over the years. The quality of today’s School is due in part to the spendable payout that the current budget draws from each of the Shady Hill endowment funds you see below. We are grateful to the donors behind each and every one.

Alum Bequeaths Largest Sum Ever in Shady Hill’s History apartment in Manhattan, had not yet been sold but is currently on the market, as of this writing. Then those proceeds – roughly $500,000 – will join the rest, making this not just the largest bequest in the School’s history, but the largest single gift to Shady Hill of any type.

In March of 2021, Shady Hill was notified that a graduate of the Class of 1957, Anne Thompson Vaughan, had passed away and had named the School as sole beneficiary of her entire estate. Anne, who never had children and who outlived her cherished husband of 49 years, commented to her caregivers during her final illness that Shady Hill had been an oasis of exciting learning and stability at a time when her home life was rocky. She remained forever grateful to the school, supporting the Shady Hill Fund with such loyalty that she earned “Beehive Society” status for her uninterrupted years of giving. She served as a Class Agent, a member of the (then) Alumni Fund Committee, and an organizer of her class’s 50th reunion in 2007.

to you.” The committee invested conservatively but unconventionally: oil and gas exploration, timber—anything they deemed as safe but with growth potential. The result? Committee member David Thurston, himself an investment professional, told me that from 1998 to 2008, “Shady Hill was the number one performing institution in the world because we bought things cheap. The world!”

In 1993, while I was interviewing to become the school’s fifth Director, everyone touted the recent successes of the Investment Committee. Led by Harvard Business School professor (and later its Dean) Jay Light, Shady Hill’s endowment had grown by a remarkable 175% in less than five years without a fundraising campaign. The increase had resulted from wise investing. Sadly, Jay died last fall. Before my first meeting with the committee, people told me: “Don’t worry. You don’t need to feel nervous.” Such an admonition, of course, always makes one apprehensive, and so I arrived at the meeting edgy and hesitant; they would quickly surmise I really didn’t know much about investing. But people were right: there was no need to worry. Why? Jay Light was in charge.

In Memoriam: Jay Light October 3, 1941 – October 15, 2022

In May of 2023, the Board voted Anne Thompson to place the initial $2.8 million Vaughan ’57 into Shady Hill’s unrestricted endowment, where it will help sustain the more robust financial aid formula and the more generous employee salaries authorized by the Board over the past two fiscal years.

After Shady Hill, Anne went on to the Winsor School and Vassar College. Post college, she was a stage actor, where she met her husband Stuart, a director. Together they founded several small theater companies in New York City and its suburbs, Seattle, and New Orleans. Stuart later co-founded the New York Shakespeare Festival and served as its artistic director for many years. Anne moved from acting into producing and stage-managing.

“We’re excited that this bequest comes when we have been working intensively on strategic prioritization. This exceptionally generous gift will help us grow Shady Hill’s endowment so that we can invest in financial aid and faculty salaries,” observed Trustee Chair Alyssa Haywoode. “We are deeply grateful for Anne’s lifelong affection for Shady Hill and for her heartfelt commitment to our future.”

The bequest is still making its way to Shady Hill. In fiscal year 2023, about $3 million arrived; the final component, a co-op

Shady Hill’s endowment was $5 million in 1989 when the Committee formed, nearly $9 million when I became Director just 5 years later, and before the latest downturn had soared to over $70 million. It’s more than success. It represents profound accomplishment. Jay’s inspired leadership resulted in Shady Hill’s capacity to meet its most ambitious and institutionally important goals. In committee meetings, Jay listened more than spoke and asked questions that promoted depth of thought as well as innovation. He only had the school’s interests at heart. And he managed all this with humor and humility. Not only is Shady Hill far better off because of him, but also his mentoring strengthened my own leadership skills. We are indebted to this great man who brought intelligence and humor to every interaction. RIP, Jay.

Jay had the perfect surname because he conveyed light wherever he went. He had a sense of humor, a ready smile, a willingness to explain even the most rudimentary concepts and an absolute lack of disdain for people like me who didn’t know much about money. “If it doesn’t sound right, just raise your hand and let us know what you’re thinking,” he told me. “If anything’s confusing, let’s go out to lunch and I’ll do my best to explain,” he said. “You’re in charge. If it sounds institutionally wrong, let us know. We’ll always listen

Highest Impact Donors of 2022–2023 Looking back on fiscal year 2023, we are grateful to each and every one of the 1078 donors who collectively gave and pledged $7,165,001 to Shady Hill School. We particularly recognize the following benefactors, whose gifts of all types, as well as new pledges, are aggregated in the roster below. These aggregated amounts comprise support of the Shady Hill Fund, the Lower School Playground renovation, and various endowment funds. Shady Hill would not be the school it is today without the strong philanthropic backing of those in a position to give so generously. On behalf of all who learn and grow at this fine school – now and in the future – we offer deep thanks.

“ We feel deeply connected to and invested in the Shady Hill School community and its mission of joyful, active learning. Each night when we sit down to dinner, and get a recap of our son’s day at school, the projects he is working on, amazing teachers he is learning from, his updates on how Central Subject is woven into the curriculum of various classes and we see the incredible friendships he is forming, we are reminded of what a special learning environment he is a part of. We give to organizations that have deep meaning and importance to our family, and Shady Hill is a no brainer for us.”

– Adam Margolin and Meghan Jasani P’29

Thank you!

“ Shady Hill’s progressive education model includes students sharing their learning throughout the year with the entire community. Assemblies, the Greek Olympics and, as the above photo illustrates, re-enacting 19th century mill labor strikes, all celebrate the joys of learning in action. The same community responsibility for celebrating learning is also echoed by all the families who make a financial gift to the School. The community’s strong sense that philanthropy is a community responsibility, demonstrated by all the names in this publication, inspires. The citizenship that community members elicit with their philanthropy impacts students and teachers, who are able to immerse themselves fully in joyful learning experiences. Thank you for your gifts and commitment to Shady Hill’s progressive education model.” – Devon Wilson-Hill, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and Development
