Shady Hill's Report on Philanthropy 23–24

Page 1

From the Head of School & Chair of the Board of Trustees

We are happy to share this year’s Report on Philanthropy with the Shady Hill community. Throughout the 2023-24 school year, our theme of “Community and Teamwork” was a consistent thread that began during Opening Meetings in August and continued through June. We were fortunate to bring in experts on this topic including educator and author Elisa MacDonald and facilitator and coach Gene Thompson-Grove. They shared the importance of feeling known, being valued, and building trusting relationships. We also developed norms that help us communicate openly, navigate conflict, and hold each other accountable.

In this report, we share stories about the special moments that occurred last year as we practiced what we learned. One lesson was strengthening the collaborative effort between faculty and staff in our ongoing strategic plan working groups. Throughout the year, seven working groups met and developed suggestions for next steps in the implementation of our strategic plan. They presented their suggestions to school leadership, which led to the creation of a targeted plan of action. (See p.32.)

As we craft and build Shady Hill’s future, we are grateful for the financial support of donors like you. Your unwavering commitment makes joyful, active learning possible for our students. We extend our heartfelt thanks to every donor listed in this report and to those who wish to remain anonymous. Every gift of every size supports Shady Hill’s work of ensuring that our students are known, loved, and supported throughout their journey from Beginners to Grade VIII.

Sincerely,

Mission Our

Shady Hill School fosters joyful, active learning informed by multiple perspectives—empowering students to be intellectually adventurous and wholeheartedly just.

WE BELIEVE

• Play and discovery are central to every child’s growth and true exploration takes time.

• The purpose of knowledge is to create meaning, develop understanding, and inspire action.

• Growing up is a nuanced process and mistakes are catalysts for deeper learning and progress.

• A strong, interdependent community is the framework for academic confidence and social and emotional health.

• Practicing genuine kindness towards oneself and others helps build a compassionate world.

• We have a responsibility—as individuals and as a community—to honor difference, challenge prejudice, and strive for racial and social justice.

2010–present 2022–present

2023–2024 Leadership Volunteers

Shady Hill School is immensely grateful to the many generous, talented, and committed volunteers in our community. This listing by no means captures every one of the hundreds of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends of the school who gave their time and talents to benefit the Shady Hill community in the 2023–24 school year. Everywhere you turn, volunteers are enriching our school’s programming, student experience, fundraising efforts, and faculty & staff. Thank you for your commitment to Shady Hill School!

Note:

Shady Hill Lands Major Grant to Expand Financial Aid

Shady Hill has landed a major financial aid grant from The Children’s Education Initiative (“TCEI”), a foundation based in southern California whose mission is to make independent primary/middle school accessible to more students who otherwise would not be able to attend.

The TCEI grant will cover the full tuitions and any ancillary needs (such as bus transportation, Afterschool, music lessons, etc) of two SHS Kindergarteners starting next fall (2025) and will continue through the entirety of those two students’ Shady Hill journeys, coming to potentially as much as $1.5 million, all provided by TCEI. If all goes as planned, TCEI will cover an additional two new Kindergarteners in each subsequent year until they are ultimately underwriting 18 SHS

students across all grades from Kindergarten up through Grade VIII, ongoing.

TCEI asks for absolutely no say in selecting students; that responsibility remains completely with our Admission Office. Nor will TCEI know the identities of the students or their families. Conversely our families won’t know if their financial aid is coming from the TCEI grant or from Shady Hill’s regular financial aid budget. The foundation wants to ensure they remain out of the way, letting Shady Hill remain Shady Hill.

We could not be more thrilled to receive this grant, allowing us to expand financial aid at Shady Hill. We hope this partnership will thrive and remain in place for years to come!

The Shady Hill Fund

With the support of the School’s donors, we raised $2,025,926. The Fund is a reflection of the community’s devotion to ensuring that Shady Hill students and faculty have the resources they need to achieve the School’s mission, and experience joyful, active learning.

We are grateful for every single gift! The donor listing that follows is a celebration and recognition of each and every individual who supported the School: parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, TTC graduates, employees, and friends – all contributed to this community-wide achievement. Giving unites us!

Shady Hill Fund Donors

BUILDING COMMUNITY, ACROSS THE GENERATIONS

Ms. Maloney’s Grade IV Class traded letters with alumni last school year, in a fruitful “Pen Pals Project” that perfectly illustrates the “Community and Teamwork” theme of this Report.

Participating alumni ranged in age from the Class of 1950 to the Class of 2006. The project was launched by graduate Liz Peet ’00 while covering Ms. Maloney’s parental leave, and it continued all year, beyond Ms. Maloney’s return.

We are so grateful for the amazing role SHS has played in the growth of our children. As architects ourselves, we appreciate how unique and nurturing the architecture and environment of this campus are. We also realize maintaining this special campus comes at a substantial cost, which is one reason (among many) that we’re so happy to support the Shady Hill Fund.”

BUILDING COMMUNITY, ACROSS THE GENERATIONS

Anjali Lappin ‘06 came to campus in June, allowing for an in-person visit with Madison, her Grade IV pen pal. They had much to talk about, having discovered through their correspondence that they both play the cello and have performed in dance competitions.

Families reported that the Pen Pals Project sparked many interesting conversations at home, as students shared what the alums were telling them about their jobs, hobbies, and Shady Hill memories.

Shady Hill has had a huge influence on me and my family. I was at Shady Hill from 1987 until 2000, when I left to Head a K-8 Charter School. The creativity, independence, and curiosity about the world that my children learned at Shady Hill has shaped who they are, and my years at the school shaped me as an educator. We all see Shady Hill as the yardstick by which to measure other schools. “How much is it like Shady Hill?” is the question we ask about any other school. I am happy to support Shady Hill, given all it has done for us.

BUILDING COMMUNITY, ACROSS THE GENERATIONS

Jeff Freeman ‘50 met his pen pal, Eli, during the Grade IV Olympics. The project not only allowed students to practice sentence and paragraph structure, but it also covered how to address envelopes and where to place a stamp – “old school” skills new to many fourth graders.

BUILDING COMMUNITY, ACROSS THE GENERATIONS

Tom Gregg ’51 visited with his Grade IV pen pal, Hugo. By coincidence, Tom spent his career as an orthopedic surgeon, so was able to give Hugo some tips on his injury – one of many topics the two pen pals discussed in their letters.

The 2024 Valentine’s Day Campaign received over 425 donations honoring current and former faculty members and other employees. While honorary gifts can be made at any time throughout the year, this campaign invites current families, students and alumni to write a personalized message and make a connection with a Shady Hill adult who has positively impacted their time at Shady Hill. Middle School students deliver the notecards, bouquets and treats throughout the day, spreading gratitude and connection across campus!

A strong endowment means a strong future, and at the same time, reflects a loving and appreciative past. Endowments last forever, growing through skilled investment management and through new gifts — and sometimes whole new funds — added over the years. The quality of today’s School is due in part to the spendable payout that the current budget draws from each of the Shady Hill endowment funds you see below. Donors Moved to Honor Teachers

A frequent reason donors cite in creating a new endowed fund is the desire to pay tribute to a teacher who has been a positive influence on their child. This past year saw two such funds established: the Betsy Leahy Financial Aid Fund and the Anne Moncreiff de Arrarte Fund for Neurodiverse Learners.

As the title of the Betsy Leahy Financial Aid Fund suggests, it is positioned — with the full endorsement of the honoree — in support of financial aid. The donors behind it, Kim Henry and Jim Quagliaoroli, were moved to establish it upon learning that Betsy Leahy would be retiring in June 2023 after 37 years teaching Grade III at Shady Hill. Kim said, “Ms. Leahy instilled such a long lasting love of learning in our student and we are forever grateful to her.”

Ms. Leahy admitted to being humbled by this generous tribute. “I’m honored to have my tenure at Shady Hill recognized in such a tangible way,” she said. “The purpose of the gift — adding to Shady Hill’s total financial aid — is so important. We are a much stronger school thanks to the socioeconomic diversity of our community, and it takes a lot of financial aid to make this possible.”

Across campus, another family decided to demonstrate their gratitude to Grade V teacher Anne Moncreiff de Arrarte by naming a new fund in her honor. In this case, they positioned the fund to support faculty professional development in the area of neurodiverse learners.

The donors, Neal Lakdawala and Elizabeth Gertstner, remarked, “We were beyond impressed with Ms. Arrarte. She is truly talented at building students’ confidence, especially those who are self-conscious about a learning difference.”

Ms. Arrarte countered, “We all have strengths and weaknesses. I try to model this myself all the time, owning up to my struggles. I think it helps my students to see that everyone has challenges. And so often, what people think is a weakness, if flipped another way, is actually another strength!”

An endowed fund is a permanent component of the overall Shady Hill endowment; it will last in perpetuity, keeping the honoree’s name present in the School’s financial operations — literally forever. Once an endowed fund has been established, other donors are free to add to it at any time and in any amount. We welcome additional gifts to both these new funds.

A Purposeful Legacy from Mary Lothrop Bundy ’39

Mary Lothrop Bundy ’39 passed away in the summer of 2022 at the age of 97. She attended Shady Hill in the 1930s, sent her sons here in the 1960s, and served on the SHS board of trustees during her time as a Shady Hill parent. And when two of her grandsons came to Shady Hill in the 1990s through the early 2000s, she proudly wore the mantle of Shady Hill grandparent.

In her estate planning, Mary chose to steer a generous gift to Shady Hill, specifying that it be used for faculty development. In consultation with Mary’s sons, the school has created a new endowed fund for faculty professional development that particularly advances equity and inclusion.

The Deed of Gift governing the newly-established Mary Lothrop Bundy Fund includes this summary, supplied by her sons:

In the fall of 1934, a bookish nine-year-old came to the school as a fifth grader, and made friends with a group of girls she would treasure all her days. Mary’s deep respect for teaching was ignited by the lively, idiosyncratic, and creative souls who taught at Shady Hill, and she remained a passionate supporter of schools, colleges, and universities all her life. She also sent three children and two grandkids to Shady Hill, and attended reunions joyfully.

Mary figured out early in life that she did best when she had opportunities to stretch, to be challenged. She broke glass ceilings by serving in leadership roles in corporate America and at Harvard, worked with the families of incarcerated parents, and went back to school in her fifties to become a social worker and counselor. Both in institutional work and in her personal life, Mary focused on creating opportunity in the lives of people who face barriers to learning, employment, or growth. Her sons hope this endowed fund will advance such work at Shady Hill, as it supports, develops, and sustains a racially and economically diverse teaching faculty.

One concrete thing the new Bundy Fund will do is help to send employees to the annual NAIS People of Color Conference. In this work, the Bundy Fund will join forces with the existing Faith Chase Fund, named for the first Black teacher at Shady Hill, who taught at SHS from 1969 to 1992. As her son Andrew ’68 put it, “Nothing would please Mom more than joining her legacy with that of Faith Chase in supporting Shady Hill’s ongoing work to advance equity, inclusion, and belonging.”

Strategic Plan Next Steps

Shady Hill began the process of developing a new strategic plan in 2022 by working with a steering committee of Board members, faculty, administration, alumni and parents. This inclusive, feedback-rich process allowed all constituents to share their ideas in person, by Zoom and through written responses. The feedback and priorities were approved by the Board of Trustees and Shady Hill’s strategic plan ’23–’28 — Shady Hill Strong — was born.

The results of this process yielded three main priorities:

• Priority One: Strengthen the Academic Program

• Priority Two: Reimagine the Employee Journey

• Priority Three: Reinvigorate our Community

Working groups consisting of faculty and staff met monthly during the 2023–24 school year, with a goal of presenting recommendations for next steps to the leadership team at the end of the year. The working groups included Thematic Studies and Central Subject, Technology Use, Access and Belonging, The Student Experience, Learning Support, Employee Wellbeing, and Parent Engagement.

The in-depth discussions generated at these meetings were insightful and thought provoking, providing participants the opportunity to share their experience and expertise with the group. Several open sessions were held midyear so the working groups could gain input from parents, alumni, and parents of alumni. This working group structure allowed for many different perspectives to be heard, and to use the creativity of the individuals when establishing a plan for moving forward.

As parents of three children, we marvel at how well Shady Hill teachers have known and connected with our kids — each so different from their siblings. We are well aware that it takes giving from all quarters and at all levels to fuel the gifted teaching that makes Shady Hill so special. It’s our pleasure to do our part by supporting the Shady Hill Fund.

Greg Papp and Christy Rossi, P’22, ’24, ’26

Each group presented several recommendations based on their conversations throughout the year. As a result of these recommendations, several things occurred including:

• The appointment of a one-year Dean of Faculty position who represents the faculty voice in the administration while onboarding new teachers and actively supporting all faculty.

• A one-year Lower School Director of Instruction was hired to work directly with the Lower School teachers on instructional practices in order to meet the complex needs of students.

• Faculty and administrators will focus efforts on teaching and learning, working together on curriculum coordination, scope and sequence, and instructional practice.

• The Technology Use group produced a new cell phone policy, a slower student tech roll-out, and a recommendation to have expert speakers on this topic host evening presentations for parents.

• The Parent Engagement Group conducted two surveys this summer, one on parent events and volunteering, the other on communications effectiveness and gauging parents’ sense of belonging.

Additional suggestions are still being addressed, but in the meantime the plan is progressing as it provides a roadmap to the future.

We plan to update the community on a few other strategic initiatives in the coming months.

Highest Impact Donors of 2023–2024

Looking back on fiscal year 2024, we are grateful to each and every one of the 1,093 donors who collectively gave and pledged $2.02M to Shady Hill School. We particularly recognize the following benefactors, whose gifts of all types, as well as new pledges, are aggregated in the roster below. These aggregated amounts comprise support of the Shady Hill Fund and various endowments and special projects.

Shady Hill would not be the school it is today without the strong philanthropic backing of those in a position to give so generously. On behalf of all who learn and grow at this fine school – now and in the future – we offer deep thanks.

The 2023–4 school year was a memorable one for me, in that I was gifted a four-month sabbatical in the winter, marking my 14th year as Head of School. I came back mid-May with my metaphorical “batteries recharged,” so excited to immerse myself once again in the Shady Hill end-of-year magic, from May Day to True Courage, from Rites of Passage to Reunion. Returning to this community, I realized with fresh eyes how much love there is here. Gratitude and generosity abound. How lucky we are!

Mark Stanek, Head of School
