Our Lenten experience concludes with the journey to the empty tomb. News of the risen Christ reaches those closest to Him, then spreads to the greater community, taking us through the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles at Pentecost. The promises, the announced transformation, the newly defined mission; so our Catholic church begins. Those promises, transformative experiences and mission are at the core of our tangible deliverables at Kennedy Catholic. Over the course of the next few months, with accreditation recommendations, 2020 Vision and State of the School initiatives as the guide, we will begin the initial steps to build the next 5-year plan for Kennedy Catholic. With our new patron, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati leading the way and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit guiding us, we will seek to advance the mission of the Church in excellence, accessibility, and fidelity to our Catholic faith. One word that might define our future is Koinonia, a Greek term, which is found in Acts of the Apostles 2:42. It means they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. To be sure, the mission of Kennedy Catholic is built around fellowship, prayer, and liturgy. A devotion to the teaching of Christ implies that we have command of and therefore act on those teachings. “In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. The Church calls for a different kind of political engagement: one shaped by the moral convictions of well-formed consciences and focused on the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and vulnerable.” (excerpt from Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States). This past January and February, our bishops modeled for us what it means to act on Catholic teachings. During the legislative session, the Washington bishops met with and testified before lawmakers, advocating for the unborn and the poor. However, despite their advocacy, all six proposed amendments to the bill failed. The question I asked myself during my own Lenten journey: were you aware of, and therefore acting on, the teachings of Christ with respect to this legislation? As the president of an Archdiocesan Catholic high school, I am committed to becoming more aware of and modeling for our amazing Lancer Family, the principles of Catholic activism, to join in solidarity with our bishops, the WSCC (Washington State Catholic Conference) and its executive director. I am committed to this deliverable; that Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship; A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States, will become as familiar to all Lancers as our school’s fight song. February and March were months of preparation and transformation. Lent is a season of grace, a time to renew our faith. Our students and staff had several opportunities to renew their faith. In February we began the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday Mass. The next day, our faculty and staff spent the day in retreat, learning about Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, spending time in service to our community, and in prayer with each other. At the end of the month, Archbishop Sartain celebrated Mass for us and announced our new patron, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, to the community. To conclude the day, our senior student leaders met with Archbishop Sartain at his annual high school leadership dinner and presented him with a clothing donation for his donation drive. The last week of February was also Senior ISLE presentation week. I had the privilege of sitting on a panel to review and score the student presentations. I am always NANCY BRADISH amazed by the depth of our students’ faith, how they have committed themselves Principal to living a life of service to others, and how deeply impactful their service is on their world view and how they view themselves. I am grateful to be able to witness this growth in faith and proud of their professionalism. We had a special prayer service and 17 minutes of silence on March 14 in honor of the victims from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Our students, faculty and staff came together to pray for the lives of the victims and to pray for the Respect for All Life. The prayer service was planned by students and exemplified who we are as a Lancer family. March brought our spring SEARCH and Freshman Retreat. SEARCH is always a profound experience and one our students eagerly await the opportunity to attend. Freshman Retreat is transformative. The students allowed themselves to experience everything the retreat had to offer and they walked away with a new sense of purpose and community. Welcome to the Lancer family, Freshmen. Our Human Relations Club honored and celebrated the rich diversity of our Lancer family with events during Cultural week, culminating in one of the students’ favorite assemblies of the year, the Cultural Assembly, an assembly of song and dance from cultures around the world. The month of March, and the Lenten season, drew to an end with the many prayer opportunities to help us honor Holy Week. Students were able to participate in reconciliation, Holy Thursday Mass and Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. We are truly blessed to be in a community where we can celebrate and share our faith. Happy Easter! “To live without faith, without a heritage to defend, without battling constantly for truth, is not to live but to ‘get along’; we must never just ‘get along.’” ~Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, Patron of Kennedy Catholic High School

Walk Out Prayer Service On March 14, Kennedy Catholic students organized a 17-minute prayer service in memory of those who lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Names of each victim were spoken with prayer and a moment of silence. Directly following the service, Lancer’s freed 17 biodegradable dove balloons from the Kennedy Catholic courtyards as a symbol of solitude. A video recap can be watched here.
Stations of the Cross On Good Friday, Ms. Dodge’s class performed the Stations of the Cross in front of the Lancer community to honor and remember the final days of Jesus’ life. Students used this wonderful tribute to incorporate Jesus’ life with current events – it was a moving reflection for all in attendance.

Lancers at the Vatican Last month, Kennedy Catholic students Sarah F., Regina W., Leilani N. and Miriam F. traveled to Italy with the Jubilee Young Women’s Choir from St. James Cathedral. They had the amazing opportunity to sing at daily masses in some of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy, including St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. On their last day of singing, the girls performed for Pope Frances, which was followed by Solemn Mass. What an experience!
AVID Field Trip AVID students traveled to the Bungie Studios to visit and job shadow for the day. Bungie is the developer of many video games including Halo and Destiny. Lancer students were able to tour their studio and sit down with employees from multiple disciplines to talk about career and education paths. Students left the day feeling excited and inspired by their conversations with individuals working at Bungie.

NOLA Service Trip This Spring Break, 21 students spent a week volunteering with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity building a home. Along with full days spent at the work site we were able to experience the richness of New Orleans culture – from warm beignets and savory po’boys, to The House of Dancing Feathers (a living museum curated by Mr. Lewis in the Lower 9th Ward that honors the Mardi Gras Indians), to the beautiful music and history. We were welcomed with open arms, hearts, and a seat at the table. Throughout the week we reflected on the incredible resilience of the people of New Orleans, specifically the folks in the Lower 9th Ward, the neighborhood that was most heavily impacted by Hurricane Katrina. We found ourselves in constant awe at the hope and love everyone we encountered possessed, even after losing everything. Thirteen years later and their neighborhood is still damaged, yet the community has continued to rebuild and reclaim the neighborhood for each other. Their determination and activism was our guiding light throughout the week, a reminder that we are intricately connected and it is our call to not only serve each other but align ourselves with the marginalized. This inspiration carried over to our work with Habitat. We were able to put up all the walls in the house, install insulation, wrap the house, cut out and frame all
eight windows, build the porch stairs and handrails, install the center beam of the house, and assist in the prep work to install the trusses. Although the work was exhausting it was also life giving. Days spent hammering turned into dance parties and karaoke sessions. We found joy in our service and joy in building community, literally. Claire H. said it best, “I was surprised by how blind I was and still am.” A week spent in community and in service called for us to live with our eyes open – to love, to service, to the injustices around us – and to do something. As Burnell, the owner of the only market in the Lower 9th, said – “You don’t have to be the best, you just have to do your best,” and we firmly intend to continue to serve others to the best of our abilities. Thank you to everyone that helped make this service trip a success – Ms. Harrington, Mr. Janicki, and Mr. Moore, Mr. Mobini, Mr. Dyer, Mr. Cascio, Mrs. ParkerHaas, Mrs. Swalm, all of Campus Ministry, Mrs. Bradish, Mr. Prato, Mrs. Clark, Mr. Buenafe, Mrs. Stephens, Mrs. Dahleen, all Faculty and Staff that provided feedback during the application process, and to the families of the 21 students. We could not have done it without you! Kennedy Catholic High School | www.kennedyhs.org

Erik E. Travels to the Philippines for ISLE Service Project Last month, Erik E. spent a few weeks in the Philippines volunteering his time at a local school in preparation for his senior Integrated Service Learning Experience (ISLE) project. While on their campus, Erik helped elementary aged students learn about the importance of dental care and flossing. As a graduation requirement, each Lancer student must complete a minimum of 50 hours of service with a culminating cross-curricular paper and panel presentation. ISLE encourages students to deepen their personal sense of responsibility for the needs of others while using Catholic Social Teaching as a framework for reflection. Where did you travel to and why? I traveled to a small agricultural village, La Virgen Milagrosa, in the Philippines with my mom and grandma for my ISLE project. This is where my grandpa grew up and where a lot of my family still lives. Our family sponsors a Community Learning Center at the village’s local elementary school. For my ISLE project, I collected dental hygiene supplies from local dentists and students at Kennedy Catholic because personal hygiene is still a major health problem in the Philippines, especially in the rural areas. At the elementary school I instructed the students about the importance of dental hygiene and how to take care of their teeth. Because of the generosity of the Lancer community, the students at La Virgen Milagrosa Elementary School were able to have two complete sets of dental supplies. Tell us a little about your experience: It was an eye-opening experience to see how privileged we are in the United States. My family in the Ilocos Norte province live far removed from the developed cities and live without quick access to hospitals and clinics. My trip reminded me that it is important to know that God blessed us with gifts, and those gifts are meant to be shared with the world. What was your favorite part about your experience? Spending time with the students. It is amazing how kids are kids no matter where you go. They joked, laughed, and made fun of my poor Ilocano (a dialect used in the Ilocos region), but overall, they were happy. It is an overwhelming feeling when you are surrounded by that much joy and happiness. I am lucky that I was able to make an impact in their lives. 10

Alumni Profile: Rian DeFaccio ‘06 Rian DeFaccio ‘06 could always be found in the basement of Kennedy Catholic as a student, playing trombone or piano in the band room. He immersed himself in music, joining the concert band as a freshman and continuing through his Senior year. He dreamed of becoming a performer, and devoted hours to practicing his talent, focusing on being just 1% better every day. His passion for music stayed with him in college, when he attended Washington State University. There, his focus shifted from performing to teaching, and after buying and renovating his first house, he successfully opened and ran his own piano studio. He’s taken every opportunity to fill his life with music, including taking additional jobs as an accompanist and substitute teacher. Recently, he even came back to help during Kennedy Catholic’s spring musical, High School Musical, with the secondary piano. Rian’s connection to Kennedy Catholic has stayed strong. He remembers having wonderful mentors and being encouraged to be himself and grow into the person he has become. In particular, Mr. McMillan had a way of making math accessible to his students, even those who would rather play music than solve formulas. Those lessons weren’t lost on Rian. As he got older, and learned to run his own business, he became more and more interested in math and science. While music is something he will always love, Rian felt ready for a new challenge. Starting this fall, music will become his hobby, and he will be moving to Chicago to complete a Master’s degree in Biostatistics from Northwestern University. Looking to the future, Rian is excited to live in a new city, and combine his interests in math and medicine while working towards his degree. After graduating, he hopes to start his career with a focus on global health and vaccines and would love the chance to travel. But, as a true Seattleite, the first on his list when settling into his new city will be finding his source of coffee.
