LEARNING, FAITH, LEADERSHIP

Dream, listen, share, mobilize and execute are five essential words we live by as staff members at Kennedy Catholic. In addition, a foundation in prayer. Deep trust is given to us by our parents and students, so delivering on their investment in Catholic education is our duty.

MIKE PRATO President

Praying together allows us to withstand much opposition.

Every once in a while, dreams come together in an amazing way and we provide a strong return on that investment. Two weeks ago, Noah W. and Dirke H. took home first place at the DECA Area Competition, earning the right to go to the DECA State Career Development competition in March; Noah in Food Marketing and Dirke in Automotive Services Marketing. Ms. Lindsay Smith, only in her 2nd year as the DECA club moderator, will lead an additional 17 Kennedy Catholic students to the state competition. Lindsay’s passion for business education and career development comes from a marketing and communications background, which she previously put to practice as the Work Study Program Coordinator (Co-founder) at Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School. At Cristo Rey, she guided over 250 students in professional development in partnership with 60+ corporate sponsors. She championed a program creating internship experiences ultimately leading to more robust college choice options and future life opportunities for her students. We are thrilled to have her expertise leading the DECA program. Another emerging initiative, with the help of Central Washington University, is the pursuit of a Kennedy Catholic Teaching Academy, following in the footsteps of the Recruiting Washington Teachers program. Ultimately, we believe this program has the potential to generate future Kennedy Catholic teaching staff. Finally, we wrapped-up last week with a surprise visit from Pastor Terrance Proctor, from Church by the Side of the Road, speaking at ‘Triple Shot Friday’. Members from our faculty and staff, students and parents, were encouraged by Pastor Proctor to stir up the spiritual gifts that God has given us, not to be shaken by the culture of the world that would rather we, as Christians, be silent. I loved hearing our high school men and women respond with great conviction. Listen to Pastor Proctor’s podcast here. Lindsay and all of us at Kennedy Catholic are committed to success for all students. Building a business education pathway with DECA delivers on your investment. Our response to the shortage of future teachers is exciting, given the amazing legacy that is the Lancer faculty and staff! And of course, we are called to ministry in all seasons as catechists for the faith. Praying together allows us to withstand much opposition. Dream, listen, share, mobilize, execute and pray. Seeing that all in action? The life of a high school president doesn’t get much better. 1

NANCY BRADISH Principal

As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, January 28 February 3, it is an opportunity for us all to reflect on the importance of Catholic school education and the gift of faith in Jesus Christ that we give our children. During Catholic Schools week we celebrate our students, our staff, our families and our community. As Bishop Murry, chairman of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Catholic Education said, “Catholic schools provide an invaluable service to young people, their families, and our nation by helping to form women and men with the sharp intellects, broad perspectives and big hearts who bring their best to communities near and far. Jesus Christ came to change hearts and to serve – one person at a time – and so Catholic schools invite students to encounter Christ, to be changed by Him, and love God by serving others with all of their heart, mind, soul and strength.” (http://www.usccb.org/news/2018/18-016.cfm) I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you. Thank you to our families for their support of their students and of our school. Thank you to our staff who believe in all of our students and who help them cultivate their individual gifts. Thank you to our community for supporting Kennedy Catholic and Catholic education. And thank you to our students who inspire me every day. It is an honor to be a part of the Kennedy Catholic family!

Lent Begins February 14 Kennedy Catholic’s annual Lent Challenges Calendar is available here. Daily challenges include fasting from negativity and writing thank you notes to people you are grateful for. Take some time to prepare for the season of Lent today.

DECA Students Compete in Regional Conference Kennedy Catholic’s DECA chapter has grown tremendously in its second year. DECA is an international organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Competition provides authentic learning situations related to current business practices. It supports students’ development of skills such as creativity, innovation, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration, along with college and career readiness. In the fall, 35 students began preparing for competition through the study of marketing principles and their application to real-world business situations. In December, students took a rigorous marketing exam to qualify for January’s regional conference. Last month, 27 students competed at the DECA Area 5 Regional Conference in multiple events against 500 students from 18 local schools. At the conference, students competed through business role-play scenarios. Students were given a written scenario to review and had ten minutes to develop a professional approach to solving the problem. Up to ten minutes were allowed for the student to interact with a judge and demonstrate how he/she would solve the situation. Kennedy Catholic students achieved a great deal of success, with 24 receiving medals for placing in the top ten of their events, and 19 students have advanced to the State Career Development Conference and competition. Robotics Club is Busy Building and Learning

Kennedy Catholic’s Robotics Club is off to a great start! With a diverse group of students and a wide range of experience and interest, they are coming together to work as a cohesive team. This inaugural group has proven to be flexible and open-minded when experimenting with ideas as they move forward and test new things. We appreciate our volunteers for researching, organizing, and giving their time to make the robotics club a success. With endless possibilities in the world of Robotics, our students have compiled a lengthy list of future events and topics. We plan to visit other teams and competitions around the area to learn more and see how others are experimenting. We will participate in several mini-lectures to educate students about the various aspects of Robotics and we hope to take a field trip to Boeing to explore career opportunities.

Students built their first robot using LEGOs, and then competed with each other in the classroom. We are now exploring our VEX kits, where students work in groups of 3-5, creatively strategizing ways to build their robot for a future competition. Our first Robotics competition will take place next year. During the 2018-19 academic year, Kennedy Catholic is offering an introductory Robotics course. In this course, students will form a solid foundation in all aspects of Robotics, including engineering, math, science, coding, and much more! We’re excited to see how the club and class will evolve as students take science to a whole new level!

Senior Retreat Reflection By Kat A.L.

As our senior retreat crept upon us, I was both excited and nervous because I didn’t really know what to expect. I had other friends who told me about their senior retreat experience, and I could only hope mine would be half as good as theirs. I found out a couple weeks before that I would be one of the two MC’s for it and my excitement shot through the roof. As the week of the retreat came, nervousness and doubtfulness overtook me because I didn’t know what to expect from myself and my classmates. One of the things my dad always tells me is, “Go into it with an open mind otherwise it will be miserable for you and for them.” Remembering my dad’s advice, I went into my senior retreat with an open mind and it couldn’t have been better. The best part of the retreat for me was the third and final reflection session. After our speakers finished, we had the opportunity to reflect with people that were outside of our safe friendship zone and didn’t really 6

www.kennedyhs.org | Kennedy Catholic High School

talk to that much. As I saw my classmates run around the room to find someone to talk to, I took a step back and just observed the scene in front of me. I was speechless and amazed as tears were brought to my eyes because it was refreshing to see people who weren’t that close interact with each other. The biggest thing I took away from the retreat was when people say your high school years go by fast, they go by fast. Hearing this all my life, I never thought twice about it. As that frightening thought entered my mind at the retreat, I wanted it gone. So, I did the only thing I could do. Live in the moment. As we closed our retreat, I went home with newly made memories that I’ll keep with me forever. Every senior class has their own retreat and ours was our own. It was filled with laughter, tears, and memories with my classmates and closest friends. It was everything I could have asked and hoped for.

Social Media Committee

Kennedy Catholic’s new Student Social Media Committee had their first meeting this last month, where they brainstormed innovative ideas for future social media campaigns on official school accounts. Moving forward, these students will be integral in sharing with the Lancer community what is going on during the school day through posts on Instagram, Facebook and other social outlets. Their first big task was Catholic Schools Week, in which students dipped their toes in the water of content creation by taking photos and Instagram stories throughout the week. We are very excited to begin to incorporate the student voice on Kennedy Catholic social media accounts! If you are interested in following along, find Kennedy Catholic on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter!

Senior Butlers Raise $500 for Scholarships The annual senior butler service day is hosted by Kennedy Catholic’s Saint Vincent de Paul (SVdP) club to raise scholarship money for students in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Student butlers are up for auction and classmates bid on their services, like coffee in the morning and other fun activities. SVdP’s Senior Butler service day was Friday, February 2; this year, the club raised $500 in scholarships.

Library Art Helps Students De-Stress The Kennedy Catholic library began using these interactive art pieces this year as a way for Lancer students to de-stress and participate in a piece of the ‘bigger picture.’ Throughout the first semester, students have finished many different types of posters, including Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night.”

Alumni Profile: Jim Vandenberg ‘74 Jim Vandenberg first came to Kennedy Catholic in 1970 as a young student. Walking into the new school, he quickly discovered the depth of community from both the students and the faculty. As a member of the CrossCountry team, and German Club, he discovered himself and his own strengths. He also made lasting friendships. When thinking of his career, he originally thought he might channel his interest in science towards becoming a doctor. Jim also considered becoming a priest, devoting many years of his life to studying with the Jesuits before deciding his ultimate goal and purpose was teaching. He stayed close to his roots in the Pacific Northwest and his faith, teaching at Catholic grade schools around Seattle before moving to teach at the high school level. It was 2007 when Jim came back to Kennedy Catholic, this time as a teacher. He remembers thinking the only thing that didn’t change was the way the building smelled. Through the years, he has been active in the school community in many ways. While teaching math, theology, and even German for a year, Jim brightened his student’s days, quickly becoming a resource that they could rely on. He has volunteered his time supervising KOOCS (Kids Offering Others Care and Support), serving breakfast for homeless men and women on weekends at Nativity House in Tacoma. He has also given his time to athletics, coaching Cross Country. With his wide range of involvement, Jim has had the opportunity to lead students from all areas of interest over the years. Jim is soft spoken, and rarely accepts praise for himself, yet he is an integral member of the Kennedy Catholic community. He takes pride in teaching, and is motivated by the students and teachers he works with every day. In person, he stays true to the image you’ll see of him in the yearbook to the left, smiling, welcoming, and never without his favorite accessory: a cup of tea.

Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday to our February alumni! We wish you a wonderful year ahead! Click here for the full list. To make sure your name makes it in this section, head over to our Alumni Page and fill out the form under, “Help Us Update Our Records.”

Brown Bag Lunch Series: Meagan Nibarger ‘10 Continuing on with Kennedy Catholic’s Brown Bag Lunch Series, supported by the Young Alumni Society, Meagan Nibarger ‘10 spoke with interested students via Skype. She shared her passion for the family she has gained at Gonzaga University while completing her law degree. Starting her studies in business, Meagan quickly realized that it wasn’t the right fit for her and switched to Criminal Justice for her undergraduate. From there, she continued her studies with Gonzaga Law. Meagan encouraged her fellow Lancers to keep trying new things, and looking for the right path forward for them and their careers. While wrapping up her time at Gonzaga Law, Meagan takes pride in her work with the law clinic at Gonzaga, where she volunteers to help the community in their legal challenges. Through this program, she was able to argue her client’s case successfully in front of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Thank you for speaking, Meagan!

2018: A New Approach in International Education

Kennedy Catholic is excited to welcome Chau The Be (Christine) as Kennedy Catholic’s Country Coordinator in Ho Chi Mihn City, Vietnam. Her primary role as Kennedy Catholic Country Coordinator is to serve as a liaison between the school and families of current and future Kennedy Catholic Vietnamese students. Christine’s daughter graduated from Highline College and is currently studying at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Christine has been volunteering to support students and families in Vietnam to promote U.S. education for the last 5 years. We are thrilled for her to join our international admissions team. In her role as Country Coordinator, Christine will visit our current students’ families in order to provide a local contact. Most parents in Vietnam do not speak or read English - so through Christine, parents and school staff will be able to communicate with each other. As one might imagine, the stress of sending a son or daughter far away from home can be overwhelming. Christine’s role provides 14

www.kennedyhs.org | Kennedy Catholic High School

comfort and support which will build stronger Lancer family ties in Vietnam. In order to achieve our goal of diversifying our international student enrollment, Kennedy Catholic will establish virtual offices overseas and place incountry coordinators in key markets. In December, the school opened the first virtual office in Vietnam. As the international student secondary market continues to change, Kennedy Catholic is taking a careful look at the strategies we are using and the markets we are targeting. The school has been working in partnership with Mariko Fujiwara, Director of International Student Programs at Highline College. She joined Kennedy Catholic in June as a consultant and has been guiding the international team and our leadership to assist the school in developing plans to create a future 5-year vision for the program.

A Note From International Student, Annabeth T.’s Family

Dear All, First of all, on behalf of my family, I would like to wish Kennedy Catholic High School’s teachers and administration team health, happiness and prosperity! I have been rather busy welcoming in the New Year and wrapping up last year’s activities, so I apologize for replying late to the letter from the administration team. Annabeth T. has been in the United States for more than three weeks. In the early days when she arrived to the U.S., I knew that she had received the attention and care of the school team. Our family feels very reassured and appreciative of that. In Vietnam, we have also received great support from Mrs. Christine Be. She is always available to answer our questions. We are very hopeful that another member of our family will also be a student at Kennedy Catholic High School in the next few years. Please send my greetings and thanks to all of the teachers! Kind regards, Mr. Đinh Vinh T. University of Portland Wind Symphony Visits Kennedy Catholic Thank you to the University of Portland’s Wind Symphony for making a stop at Kennedy Catholic during their 2018 Puget Sound tour. They played in the Chapel throughout the day and we loved hearing their music in the Lancer hallways. Several classes made time to stop by and listen as the symphony played, taking a nice break from studying.

High School Musical Rehearsals Underway Rehearsals for High School Musical, Kennedy Catholic’s aptly titled high school musical, are underway. Students are working hard learning new choreography and memorizing their lines. This is an exciting play, and a favorite for many of the students. Mark your calendars for March 15-18 at the Highline Performing Arts Center. Pictured left: Choreographer Alyza DelPan-Monley works with students on new routines.

Elementary Band Program A record number of students auditioned for the 2018 Honor Band. Ninety-five band members have been selected and their musical journey together will begin this month. Touring Company’s Inaugural Retreat and Faith Stories Kennedy Catholic Theatre’s touring company is working hard this semester. Every year the company devises an original play. Each spring it is performed for grade school students in the area. While the shows often include improvisation, the goal each year is to focus on an aspect of Catholic identity. This year an important new step was added to the process. On January 20, a day-long retreat was held at Seattle’s West of Lenin theatre. The retreat offered company members the opportunity to build ensemble and sharpen their performance skills.

Perhaps most importantly, it gave them an opportunity to reflect on this year’s theme, which is “stories of faith. It was an energizing and fruitful day, and hopefully the start of a new tradition! The Touring Company’s show this year is called, “Faith Stories. As a partially improvised show, students have been practicing their adaptability and look forward to working together on stage in a live setting.

Jazz Band Competes in Viking Jazz Festival On Friday, February 2, our awesome Jazz Band took the ferry over to Bainbridge Island and performed in the annual Viking Jazz Festival at North Kitsap High School. They competed against 9 other bands in their division and received 4th place! They also received some great comments and a clinic from Roger Ingram (famous Jazz Artist - Trumpet). They now will take the comments from the judges and clinicians and continue to improve their pieces in preparation for the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Idaho (Feb. 22 - 24). Shout-out to the whole Jazz Band for their hard work, especially soloists: Zach B. (Alto Sax), Corey Z. (Trombone), Logan F. (Drums). Kennedy Catholic High School | www.kennedyhs.org

2018 Football Schedule to Introduce New Format, Matchups

NPSL Principals and Athletic Directors voted this past month to realign the existing Cascade and Olympic divisions into three divisions for this upcoming football season in an effort to improve competition and balance the playing field. Kennedy Catholic will play in first division, the Mountain (Valley and Sound will be the other two), along with Kentwood, Tahoma, Auburn Riverside, Todd Beamer and Enumclaw High Schools. Mountain school teams will play three non-league games (weeks 1-3), five division games (weeks 4-8) and then finish with an NPSL crossover game for seeding into the postseason. “This is an exciting format and one that should allow for our guys to have a lot of competitive, fun games this upcoming season,” shared Sheldon Cross, head football coach. “We are looking forward to the challenge of the 2018 season and already counting down the days until week 1.” Among the highlights of the 2018 schedule; week 2 sees the Lancers will travel and play Bothell High School at historic Pop Keeney Stadium, Homecoming will be Saturday, October 6 versus Todd Beamer High School, and Week 8 hopes to be a showdown with the defending Cascade Division champions from Kentwood High School.

17-18 Captains Council to Promote Core Covenants For the second consecutive school year, the Captains Council - an athletic advisory group comprised of representatives from each of our athletic programs - has set out on a spring project aimed at reinforcing the core covenants of the school’s athletic department. This year’s campaign will feature web and print images highlighting the department’s four core covenants - grit, integrity, passion and service - and definitions of those words written by the student-athletes themselves. “What is most powerful about this campaign is that these are the true words of our student-athletes,” said Sam Reed, athletic director. “In an environment where some forget the true essence of high school sports, our student-athletes remain surprisingly focused and aware of the intrinsic benefits that come from competing in one of our athletic programs.” Images will be shared through our Lancer Athletic social media accounts (@OurLancerNation on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook) twice a week through the end of the school year. The group photos will be printed and hung throughout the school for all to see.
