A Note from Mike Prato, President
“”
I do will it. Be made clean.
It happened that there was a man full of leprosy in one of the towns where Jesus was; and when he saw Jesus, he fell prostrate, pleaded with him, and said, “Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” And the leprosy left him immediately. Luke 5: 12-14 I saw a cartoon recently. An elf, Frosty, Rudolph and Santa Claus were sitting in the waiting room to see their psychologist. The elf complained,” I’m in a dead-end job.” Frosty counters, “I’m bipolar.” Rudolph is upset that the other reindeer laugh and call him names, while Santa Claus “doesn’t believe in himself.” During this season of resolution, reflection and refinement, we all seem to evaluate areas of our lives that require a new start or an intervention. There are a variety of infomercials selling exercise equipment, weight loss formulas, diet plans or memberships to fitness clubs. Resumes are submitted and health challenges are finally dealt with. We stop to take a true look at our own forms of leprosy; addictions, vices and
anything that causes disruption in our lives or the lives of others. As we reflect and resolve, Father Raoul Plus, S.J., in his book How to Pray Always, suggests; “It is necessary to have an absolutely sure intention in all our actions, so that the generous fulfillment of our daily duties may be directed toward the highest supernatural ideal. . .it is clear that the habit of giving an upward glance to God at the moment of action is a great assistance in aiding us to behave always with a pure intention and in freeing us from our natural impulses. . . placing all of our movements to become dependent upon the Holy Spirit.” In other words, begin all that is new with prayer, surrendering all forms of leprosy to Jesus, the healer. Ask for the spiritual gifts of wisdom, counsel, understanding, knowledge, piety, fortitude and fear of the Lord to accompany your new start.

Studying for finals can seem to be a daunting task, but preparation is the key.
Welcome to the New Year! As 2019 begins, our first semester is drawing to a close and we look forward to the second half of the year. For our freshmen, this is their first experience with semester finals. Studying for finals can seem to be a daunting task, but preparation is the key. Students have been developing good study habits over the course of the semester helping prepare them for the exams. For our seniors, this is one more step toward graduation. We hope you can join us for our Catholic Schools Week celebration, especially as we welcome Archbishop Sartain for our mass

on Wednesday, January 30 at 10:30am. Archbishop Sartain is one of the world’s leading Pier Giorgio experts, so we are excited to welcome him on campus and hear what he has to share with us. Our Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati committee is hard at work on a spiritual charter and we look forward to sharing that with our community in the coming months.
WINTER WISHES In December, Lancers took part in the annual tradition of Winter Wishes Week to celebrate the season of giving. This joyful week is filled with opportunities to give to friends, classmates and those in need. Lancers can make a wish come true for a friend or classmates through the giving tree by choosing an item and then making the wish come true. Lancers wished for their friends to receive their favorite book, gift card, and so many other thoughtful gifts. The week wrapped up with the Winter Wishes assembly, where larger wishes were granted by ASB (student government). This year, a teacher was granted a wish to be with his daughter in Los Angeles as she receives treatment for cancer and donations were made to several worthy organizations. Not only did this create a warm holiday feeling, but it helped us all have a greater appreciation for giving to others.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 2019 Catholic Schools Week is a time to honor and celebrate Catholic education. or week. It can be overwhelming being a firstyear teacher and completing my Masters, so the support of the staff is very appreciative.
GET TO KNOW ALYSE LACEY, HISTORY TEACHER Why did you pursue a career in teaching? Well, I am the fourth generation Eastern Washington University graduate in my family and we are all (or were) teachers!! My great grandmother graduated from Cheney Normal School in 1925, which is now Eastern Washington University, with her Elementary Education degree. My grandfather played football for Eastern Washington University alongside his brother in 1971, graduated with his degree in teaching as well. Then, my Mom played volleyball at Eastern and graduated with her teaching degree in 1989. Finally, my sister and I both graduated from Eastern and are now full-time teachers. You could say it’s a family affair. I have seen how many students and families my family has impacted throughout their years of teaching; the relationships that you create and keep through the years is something special. What is your favorite part of working at Kennedy Catholic? The staff has been so supportive and welcoming since the first staff meeting. I truly know that the staff has my back and can pick me up when I’m having a rough day 6
www.kennedyhs.org
How do you impact the lives of your students? I often feel like history can be a boring subject for students so I try to make history as fun as possible. By making personal connections to history, introducing the unexpected, and finding ways to convey my joy of history, my students seem to really respond. I attempt to make my history class as engaging as possible by promoting discussion and making activities active for students. Aside from teaching, I also coach JV girls’ basketball and this has been challenging with my schedule overall, but that extra time with students on the court that I never knew were at this school (because I only teach 9th grade), is worth it. It requires a lot of time and sacrifice, but I get to interact with students differently than I would in the classroom. Being a coach helps me transition into the classroom and figure out what works best with my students too. How do you experience the Lancer Family in the class room? Some students will be fine with a simple acknowledgement, but most students thrive on being recognized and receiving accolades, so I try to celebrate my students as much as possible. I try to create opportunities to listen to students, usually through discussions. I encourage my students to listen to their peers; they may or may not agree, but it’s important to listen and give suggestions or ask questions. Being able to listen to people, discuss, and cooperate with the people around you are skills students will need beyond their high school years.

ALUMNI NEWS & Leaving for college at the University of Notre Dame, he had two different paths in mind for his future: one in Engineering, and one in Architecture. While Engineering held an appeal, ultimately Ron knew he would miss the artistic aspect that he would still be able to pursue with Architecture. Putting his skills to work after graduation, Ron kept up with his interest in community service and joined Habitat for Humanity in Cedar Rapids, Iowa through AmeriCorps. He spent one year there, building 23 houses for those affected by flooding.
ALUMNI PROFILE: RON HERR ‘04 As a student at Kennedy Catholic, Ron Herr ’04 had interests on totally different sides of the spectrum: athletics and academics, art and math, left brain and right brain. His involvement helped him to think of Kennedy Catholic as a school focused on providing opportunities for students to excel, and as a place with committed teachers who care. As a member of the cross-country team, Ron developed a great group of friends who were always up for an adventure. Not only were they together for team events, but they also had fun playing Ultimate Frisbee on off-days. On the academic side, he appreciated the dual-credit classes with Seattle University, and the option to fit in additional interests, like drawing and sketching, for zero hour. He also gave additional time to activities like the Hunger Retreat, SEARCH, and community service through senior religion class. 8
www.kennedyhs.org
After this experience, Ron was ready for the next step in his career, which took him to Houston, Texas, designing custom homes. Being driven by his professional goals, and his strong Catholic faith, when an opportunity came up for him to move to Washington, DC and integrate his Catholic faith into his job, he jumped at the chance. With his current position at McCrery Architects, about 90% of Ron’s projects are for new Catholic churches across the country. Most recently, this included a Cathedral in Knoxville, Tennessee, and work is just beginning on a church in Fairfax, Virginia. As part of those projects, he drafts designs of the buildings in watercolor. Washington, DC is also the city where Ron met his wife playing Ultimate Frisbee. When he’s not creating a new landscape of Catholic churches, you can find him back on the field, where he teams up with his wife to captain a team in the beginner’s league.

LANCER WEDDING BELLS Being a Lancer is a unique experience, and the friendships formed continue for decades to come. A certain group of these alumni formed relationships that turned into marriages and gave us one of our Alumni in Numbers statistics for last year’s Lancer for Life – 190 alumni couples. This got us thinking: who are these couples? What brought them together, and what are their hopes for the future? Speaking with Jennifer Barnard, she told us of her and her husband Matt’s life together, from meeting in Senorita Winter’s Spanish class their sophomore year, to living in Texas as part of Matt’s commission in the Air Force. Graduates of the Class of 2003, they’re focused on living each day with meaning and purpose. Now, we want to hear from more Lancer alumni couples and give all of you a chance to be included in our annual Lancer for Life magazine! Send a photo of your wedding along with a caption to Rebecca Nuffer.

& EVENTS CELEBRATING 25 YEARS Fr. Art Gramaje, CMF ’81 is celebrating his 25th anniversary as a priest. His absolute favorite part of his job is the way he becomes a part of people’s lives. Through conversations, he is able to offer consolation, counsel, and an opportunity for deeper faith. In celebration of this milestone, join Fr. Art for Mass on February 3 at 8:30am at St. Paul’s in Seattle with a reception following.
SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY WITH THE LANCERS Are you looking for a way to stay engaged with your alma mater? Look no further than the Freshmen Retreat! For the first time, we’re extending the opportunity for alumni to join current students in giving back to our community during our annual Freshman Retreat. The Retreat is a three-day event with a day of service on February 22. It fulfills our mission to build students’ relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, community, formation, and service. The three-day retreat includes components of fun, fellowship, and faith. We truly believe this retreat can be one of the most important spiritual experiences for freshman students and impacts their remaining high school years and beyond. Over past years, we’ve worked with organizations such as Westside Baby, White Center Food Bank, Catholic Community Services of Western WA Volunteer Services, Hospitality House, Renton Veteran’s Center, St. Francis of Assisi Parish School, St. Martin de Porres Shelter, Frederic Ozanam House, Operation Sack Lunch, and the Union Gospel Mission. The hours donated during this retreat are just a portion of the 17,000-plus hours Lancers give each year. We hope you’ll consider taking a day to give back to your community alongside dedicated Lancers. Contact Rebecca Nuffer if you’re interested!

INTERNATIONAL
KENNEDY CATHOLIC WELCOMES NEW INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS The Office of International Education welcomed 8 new students from Kenya, Vietnam, China and Taiwan. The students participated in a variety of orientation activities during their welcome week to help them prepare for the new semester.
POP Z. INVITES STUDENTS: JOIN THE CLUB We caught up with Pop Z., a senior, who just started a new club. He is currently taking Digital Photography with Mr. Dolejsi and serves as a Teacher’s Assistant for art classes with Mrs. Hines. He is also helping with the artwork that hangs in the stairwells throughout the school. When asked about Pop, Mr. Dolejsi said, “He is a bright and curious mind. He reads, asks questions, is ambitious, and like all of our international students, is a true adventurer. I look forward to seeing him go off to 12

L NEWS study art and ideas in college,” he said. Pop recently attended the Seattle Performing and Visual Arts Fair to explore college options for pursuing a degree in music, theater, art, dance or other art programs. College fairs can be a convenient way for students to talk with admissions representatives. “It’s an opportunity for students to discover schools from around the U.S. they otherwise might not encounter,” said Ms. Suttell, who led international students on the event.
What is one of your most memorable experiences as a Lancer? Last Halloween, I painted my face as the clown from the movie ‘IT’. I like to have fun and express myself. I’m very glad that Kennedy Catholic encourages students to be creative and participate in activities like this.
Why did you choose Kennedy Catholic High School? I lived in Florida for two years and I transferred last year. The purpose of moving was to experience more of America, so I thought Seattle would be a wonderful place for me to explore. I heard so many good things about Kennedy Catholic. My dad has a friend who lives near here, so here I am.
Who is your favorite teacher? Mr. Behrends is my favorite. His passion for teaching can light up the whole class and I learned a lot in his class. And, of course he is a great guy over all.
How has Kennedy Catholic helped you get ready and prepare for college? Kennedy Catholic offers strong academics and sets high expectations for students. It encourages me to become a better version of myself and prepares me for college. Where are you applying? I’m applying to Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Parsons, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), School of Visual Arts (SVA), Pratt Institute and other art colleges.
What classes at Kennedy Catholic helped you prepare or decide on an Art major? The variety of art classes helped me prepare.
What are some of your accomplishments? There are a few fashion brands and magazines that reposted and commented on my artwork on social media. I still can’t believe Marc Jacobs reposted my makeup look on their Instagram story. It was a dream come true for me. For now, I’m building my own Kennedy Catholic club, ‘Vogue Universe,’ which focuses on fashion and beauty. I just want to build a bridge for people who love wearableart to connect, and create a safe place where students are encouraged to express themselves. Would you recommend Kennedy Catholic to a friend and why? I would definitely recommend Kennedy Catholic to my friends because this school embraces diversity and provides great mentorship for every student.

WHAT DOES MARY MEAN TO YOU? Junior Minh N. was published in Northwest Catholic’s January/February issue for his submission in response to, “What does Mary mean to you?” The essays were judged by a panel drawn from the staffs of Northwest Catholic, the archdiocesan Office for Catholic Schools, and the Fulcrum Foundation. Minh was the winner in the high school category. “My mom is very devoted to the church and to prayer. She loves the novena created by St. Faustina and she uses her beautiful voice to praise God, singing the rosary in Vietnamese and English. I see her say ‘yes’ to God every day, whether she is going to work, dropping us off at our practices and games, or taking us to church. My mom does everything with the brightest smile.” You can read his full essay here.
DONATE YOUR HATS AND SCARVES Please join us to help our homeless brothers and sisters in the greater Seattle area by donating warm hats and scarves. We encourage all students and their families to participate in this effort by bringing a hat or scarf to school. The items will be donated to the St. James Cathedral Kitchen who serve over 150 meals each day and provide daily essentials. This is a beautiful moment of solidarity, as each Catholic high school in the Archdiocese is collecting a different needed item. Items can be dropped off at the school in the main office anytime between now and January 30. 14

THANK YOU FROM THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY The St. Vincent de Paul club at Kennedy Catholic recently received a generous donation from a local choral organization. The following is from their letter. The combined choruses of the NWAA organization: ChoralSounds Northwest and SilverSounds Northwest have taken up a collection of $370 to be donated to the SVdP society in memory of one of our longtime chorus members who recently died: Chuck Tobin. Chuck was a member of St. Bernadette and St. Vincent de Paul parishes and faithfully served in the local SVdP society for 40+ years. The SVdP organization was very important to him and that was where his heart was - helping those in need. It was an honor to collect this money in Chuck’s name. We hope you can do great works with it.

STUDENTS COMPETE AT DECA REGIONALS When it comes to preparing students for college and careers, DECA provides a variety of ways to ensure they are ready for whatever lies ahead after graduation. Whether its attending college or entering the workforce, participating in the DECA program introduces the skills, knowledge and experience students need to excel at whatever project or assignment comes their way. DECA offers 58 competitive events which means no matter what industry or career field students are interested in pursuing, DECA has an event that applies to their potential career path. DECA members eventually stand apart from other students when it comes time to apply for college or jobs. The expertise students gain in their roleplays, written events or virtual competitions is invaluable to them as emerging leaders. Lancer students entered and competed in seven individual series events offered at the Area 5 Regional competition on January 13. Lancer students complete two role-play scenarios which are judged using a list of performance indicators specific to the scenario as well as a student’s responses to several follow-up questions. These scores are then combined with the test scores students took in order to qualify for the competition. Performance indicators are national curriculum standards which are taught in the classroom or during club meetings. These are specific knowledge or business concepts and skills the students must address and incorporate during their role-play in order to qualify for the next level of competition. This year, 31 students from Kennedy Catholic placed in the top 10 of their events – with 20 students advancing to the state competition taking place at the end of February in Bellevue. Lancer DECA competitors received first place in four of the seven events for which our students competed. Congratulations DECA Lancers! 16

HANDMADE PINATAS FOR STUDENTS IN MEXICO Every December, in Señora Moffat’s Spanish 3 classes, students work in groups to create hand-made piñatas. In Mexico, the piñata is used during the “posada” celebrations in December. In other countries, the 12 Days of Christmas are recognized, but in Mexico, the nine days of posadas leading up to Christmas Eve − Noche Buena (Holy Night) − are observed. Friends, families, and neighborhood groups re-enact the “posadas” every night between December 1624. Those portraying Joseph and Mary “seek lodging” from each (planned) house until they arrive at the final (planned) house. Joseph and Mary are welcomed, and everyone gathers to share a meal and children break a piñata. The original piñata has religious symbolism. All piñatas are filled with candy and each have a special design. With every piñata, an attached card describes the piñata, who created it, and the types of candy inside. These piñata creations are more fabulous each year. Come and purchase a piñata. All piñatas are ready for a celebratory event! We are eager to raise money for Cuernavaca. A silent auction to sell 12 piñatas will begin on Tuesday, January 22 and end on Friday, February 1. Where: C-238 Sra. Moffat’s classroom When: During school hours - If class is in session, enter via classroom door #2, to shop and bid. Silent bidding for each piñata begins at $25.00. All winners will be contacted on Friday, February 1. Proceeds: For 10 scholarships in Cuernavaca, Mexico via our Kennedy Catholic St. Vincent de Paul Society. Every year, we raise money so that 10 Mexican students can attend school in Cuernavaca, Mexico. These students have no other resources to help them receive an education.

FINE & PERFORM BAND AT DICK’S DRIVE IN GRAND OPENING Kennedy Catholic’s band was honored to perform at the grand opening of Dick’s Drive-In in Kent, the first Dick’s Drive-In location south of Seattle. Lancers arrived at Dick’s Drive-In with smiling faces, ready to perform. After playing a few songs, Lancers slowly marched to the front of the crowd and then stopped to perform their flawless rendition of the National Anthem. The crowds cheered and the band marched away, while the opening ceremony commenced. Community members, Kennedy Catholic alumni, students, and many others were there to support this local franchise. Dicks Drive-In is a local restaurant chain founded in 1954. The chain has been a Seattle favorite for over 60 years, and their drive-in style restaurant was the first of it’s kind. They are very proud of their dedication to keep their menu as similar in style, price, and food choices as the day they opened in 1954. For the last 65 years, Dick’s has only added two burgers, and two sodas to their menu, and has maintained their original cooking techniques. Lancers who performed at the opening ceremony received a coupon, so they can experience the burgers that have changed the history of burgers in Seattle. The band represented the school well, and performed beautifully for our community. Welcome to the neighborhood Dick’s Drive-In! 18
