shoulders are “ Whose you standing on?
Who is allowing you to see further?
”
Growing up, one thing I distinctly remember was the joy I felt when we were in a crowd of people and my dad would let me sit on his shoulders. At the time, I didn’t know why, but I loved that experience. Today, I realize I loved it because it made me feel big. I could see farther and know more than I could walking down in the crowd. I had an inner strength that was only possible because I was on the firm foundation of my father’s shoulders.
before me, the direction of this next generation of Lancers is crystal clear.
Fast forward to my life now. That experience of my father’s shoulders has come back to me often and each day, it means something different.
We’ve celebrated two major events in the past month that illustrate this point; the 2018 KATCH Auction and our Lancer scholarship reception. At the KATCH auction, well over 300 friends of the Kennedy Catholic community came together to celebrate and support our school. The auction wouldn’t be possible without the contributions and partnership of our entire community and the foundation of the many volunteers and contributors who’ve made the event a success for 46 years.
I am blessed each day with new opportunities, new assignments, greater challenges and greater responsibilities. Truly, the only reason I am able to move forward on everything I have done, am doing, or will do, is because others have gone before me and paved the way. I am literally standing on the shoulders of my predecessors. Those who have paid the price and those who have entrusted me with what they have collectively built.
Our Lancer scholarship reception recognizes current students seeking to sit atop the shoulders of those that have gone before them; Sr. Rosemarie Dillman, Retired Band Director Jim Paynton, Christopher Bowne ‘07, Patrick Witkowski ‘09, Randy Terlicker ‘78, Governor Albert Rosellini, Meagan Smith ‘12, Derek Orozco ‘87, and Doug Zyskowski ’82. They allow our awardees the clarity of their future as Lancers; their hope and aspirations upon graduation and beyond.
I have the unique opportunity to work in the school I attended my freshman and sophomore year. It is now my life’s ministry. The list of God-moments could fill the pages of a novel. This uniqueness begs me to realize that because of the shoulders of those that have gone

Goal two of the Kennedy Catholic Strategic Plan is to provide a provocative educational relationship that challenges the fullest potential of every Kennedy Catholic student. To meet this goal, the school has established a career day to allow students the opportunity to be introduced to a wide variety of career options which will provide them information needed to make their career and college decisions.
NANCY BRADISH Principal
On April 30, our students participated in our second annual Career Day. With six panels and five breakout sessions, more than 30 different presenters and 20 different careers were represented. Speakers shared their personal journeys to their chosen careers and discussed digital citizenship and social media presence. Students learned the fundamentals of resume writing, job search and interview skills. Options for technical career training and education were also presented. The speakers were engaging and the students were attentive. The students were also able to interact one to one with the speakers and have their individual questions answered.
This event followed vocations week. During vocations week, our Campus Ministry Office helped our students focus on their calling, whether that is in service to the Church, or to their fellow humans, a career is a vocation. One component of Vocations Week was a speaker panel. The junior class was able to meet Sr. Chris Still, OSF and Deacon Carl Chilo and hear about their vocation and faith journey. We also hosted the Jesuit Excellence tour. Juniors explored 14 different universities offering faith based education after high school. Many of our speakers, both during Vocations Week and Career Day reiterated the importance of vocation, and career as a calling to vocation. We would like to thank all of the alumni and community members who participated in these events. Your support and generosity of time is truly appreciated! I urge you to live a life worthy of the call you have received. - Ephesians 4:1

Poetry and Nationality In honor of poetry month, Ms. Staley’s Creative Writing classes worked through a poetry unit. Students were asked to define the word “nationality” and present their definition through creative means. Their presentations were a beautiful expression of who they are and what they stand for.
B-Town Beat On Friday, May 4, Ms. Hines’ art students showcased their Yayoi Kusama inspired art at a local business during the B-Town Beat Music & Art Walk. This event happens on the first Thursday of every month as a way to promote and inspire local artists and musicians.

Robotics: Year One and Beyond! Kennedy Catholic’s Robotics Club is off to a great start this year! We’ve used this year to experiment with various aspects of Robotics, including building, competing, coding, and problem solving. We started off building robots out of LEGOs, then quickly moved to the VEX kits. We dabbled in programming the VEX robots and playing a game called “Swept Away.” Amazing volunteers generously gave their time to assist students and promote critical thinking. They offered lectures and informative lessons about real-world robotics applications. Students learned everything from the basics of a robot brain to potential jobs in the field of robotics. Next year, the club will begin the planning to compete in the first Robotics competition and will discuss what’s involved in competing as a team. The Introduction to Robotics class is starting next year, offering students the opportunity to learn basic Engineering and Physics principles. We’re excited to discover all the possibilities that we can unlock as a class and club. If you have any question about Robotics, please email Mr. Fredricksen at fredricksens@kennedyhs.org. We’re looking forward to all that’s to come!

Senior Capstone Retreat The Senior Capstone Retreat was held on Saturday, April 21 at the University of Washington Newman Center and led by our Campus Ministry team and Diana Jorda, Youth Minister at St. Anthony Parish. The theme of Rest, Reflect, Dream allowed our seniors to pause during the busyness of a spring during senior year to connect more with God, themselves, and each other. At the retreat, seniors were invited to enter into a variety of prayer experiences including Ignatian Discernment, Lectio Divina, the Rosary, Adoration, journaling, and going for a prayer walk. We also had a fabulous Thai lunch which everyone loved! In reflecting on the Senior Capstone, one senior shared, “The retreat didn’t feel all “praise Jesus and hallelujah”. To me that was great, it was the right balance of just chillin’ and having that spiritual aspect. The time spent there was a time for us to just step back and take a deep breath, and believe me, it was well needed. If I had the chance to go again, I would definitely go.” Hosting the retreat at UW Newman Center allowed our students to feel more connected with their next steps in life. We look forward to more Senior Capstone retreats where students can rest, reflect, and dream.
Congratulations Ms. Hines! Ms. Hines submitted a painting to the Associated Arts of Ocean Shores and recently won the 2018 Judges Award.

World History Day Congratulations to the 16 members of the Honors World History and Literature class who competed in the Washington History Day State Competition. Louis Cunningham ‘10 to be Ordained Kennedy Catholic alumnus Louis Cunningham ’10 will be ordained as a priest at St. James Cathedral on June 9 at 10am. Priesthood ordination is an incredibly joyful moment for the candidate and for the entire church! For the individual seminarian, ordination is filled with great support and celebration from their Archbishop, family, friends, mentors, priests, Crozier members, Serra clubs, Knights of Columbus, Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women, seminarian faculty, and even their vocation director. There are many special parts of the rite that make this Mass very unique if you are able to attend. Ordination is a major step in their formation but for newly ordained priests, their formation continues through their ministry (the people teach them in their affirmation and in their questions) and through their first five years of being a priest in ongoing priestly formation training. All are invited to attend. Kennedy Catholic High School | www.kennedyhs.org

Alumni Profile: John Springer ‘87 As a member of the Class of ‘87, John Springer forged friendships, sprinted into sports, and took on student government. He took advantage of the clubs and activities available to him as a student and made lasting friendships. His passion and drive, along with his positive attitude, have kept him pushing forward in his goals. Now, as a physical therapist and soccer coach, he looks back to see that he followed his planned path. He knew he wanted to work in healthcare, and physical therapy turned out to be the perfect fit. His patients inspire him and help him make the most of each day. As a coach, he gets to do something he loves, and is rewarded with the energy and passion his players put into soccer. This willingness to help others around him was present during his time as a student as well. John remembers an emphasis at Kennedy Catholic on helping students find themselves, with clubs and activities for everyone. A member of Natural Helpers, he worked with other students as a peer mentor, developing listening and communication skills. As Senior Class President, he was a leader for his classmates and the school. Then and now, his friendships and memories are what inspire him to keep working hard and enjoy every day. John is one to live in the moment, taking advantage of the opportunities around him, and making lasting memories. He loves spending time outdoors, hiking with his wife and three kids, who he is so proud of. This past fall, his team of soccer standouts from Wenatchee faced off against the Lancers in the WIAA State tournament for girls soccer. Only one team could advance, and that team was the Lancers. While John was disappointed for his team, if he had to lose, he was glad it was to the Lancers. Even though it’s been years since he walked these halls, he remembers the gifts of friendship and says, “Once a Lancer, always a Lancer!”

Lord of the Flies Survival Challenge Ms. Rosser’s English 2 class completed a Lord of the Flies survival challenge where groups of students had to explain how they would survive if their plane crashed on an island. Each group created a system of government, necessary survival tools and communicated which human rights should be protected. Some survival techniques included spear fishing and the creation of A-frame huts for shelter. This project was a great opportunity for students to use their imagination when thinking about survival in isolation.
Microorganisms Mr. Skillman’s freshmen Physical Sciences classes worked with microscopes this month to observe microorganisms. A microorganism is a microscopic organism which exists in single-celled form or in a colony of cells and is found all around us. This laboratory-oriented and Algebra-based Physical Sciences course seeks to increase student understanding of lab safety, scientific method, and problem solving skills.
Science Club Fire Prevention This month, the Kennedy Catholic Science Club learned about fire prevention through the creation of models made from playdoh and matches. Each group created their own model to be tested and then modified based on recommendations from Mr. Skillman and fellow science club members. This interactive lesson was a great way for students to learn about the spread of fire and the many factors that impact it, such as a windy day.

Latin Convention In April, the Latin classes attended the WA/BC Junior Classical League Convention at Warm Beach Campground in Stanwood, WA. It was a diverse gathering of over 200 Latin students from schools of all types from all over the PNW. They competed in academic and athletic contests, attended a Roman banquet, and sang campfire songs in Latin. They also had the opportunity to visit with guest speakers such as visiting professors and Roman era re-enactors. Our very own Chloe D. served as the JCL Regional Vice President and was tasked with designing this year’s t-shirt and managing the operations of the convention. We also had a new student elected into the officer ranks. Our very own Mianna B. was elected to the post of Regional Secretary. Congratulations! Despite the cold and rainy weather, everyone had a great time!

Virtual Office Helps to Build Partnerships In the April Issue of the Communi-K, we announced the opening of Kennedy Catholic’s virtual office in India. Harveen Kohli is representing Kennedy Catholic to a large region in India and neighboring countries. Harveen’s curriculum vitae includes experience as a regional marketing and recruiting manager in India for St. Lawrence College, Ontario, Canada. Her work plan included implementing international recruitment strategies, meeting—or surpassing— admissions goals, advising prospective students on program selection, and supporting academic success for her students in challenging foreign environments. “My background in training agents on behalf of St. Lawrence College has prepared me well as an advocate for Kennedy Catholic High School.” Harveen’s primary role will be to identify key agents, build partnerships and invite new students from India to be a part of the Lancer family. She is a consultant with Career Mosaic in India, which engages with more than 400 agents in 31 cities across India as well as Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and UAE. India is a new market for Kennedy Catholic, but an emerging market internationally. Harveen’s main emphasis is to work closely with potential partner schools, whether public, private or international focused. Her focus will include building brand awareness, conducting interest seminars with prospective students and families, and developing partnerships that benefit both the school and Kennedy Catholic. As in other international markets,

families are attracted to secondary schools such as Kennedy Catholic because of the linkages to prestigious colleges and universities, our comprehensive mission, our location, cultural and recreational options and of course, exposure to future career choices. Harveen will also be conducting seminars and attending fairs in major cities such as New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bangalore. In an effort to attract the perfect Lancer family, Kennedy Catholic is committed to engaging with reputable educational advisory agencies, equipping them with extensive knowledge of the school. It is expected that Kennedy Catholic staff maintains its connections to top agencies and conversely, expecting agency officials to visit Kennedy Catholic on a regular basis to maintain an intimate familiarity with Kennedy Catholic. Vocations Week Beginning April 23, Kennedy Catholic celebrated Vocations Week, promoting vocations to priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life in the Catholic Church. During Community Period, Juniors had the opportunity to hear from Sister Chris Still ‘79 and Deacon Carl Chilo about vocational discernment. The two shared their faith journeys and answered questions regarding living everyday as a witness to Christ. Members of Ms. Harrington, Mr. Barbarossa and Ms. Cacabelos’ Theology classes attended a vocational life panel on marriage, priesthood and life as a nun. Father Tom Vandenberg, Sister Maria Chaley and Theresa ’08 and Erik Kennedy spoke to students openly about their call to vocation and life in communion with God. This was a great opportunity for students to learn and then ask the panelists honest questions about faith, work and life.

Touring Company Hits the Road with Faith Stories Kennedy Catholic Theatre’s Touring Company hit the road in April, performing six shows at six different schools over two days. This year’s offering was Faith Stories, four original company-devised stories offering different perspectives on the journey of faith. In keeping with tradition, the stories were developed through improvisation, and they continued to evolve through the performances. In January, the touring company held it’s first ever retreat, and it was a great opportunity to bond, play games, and share their faith stories with each other. The retreat was an invaluable tool in discovering the heart of what would become the show.
