A Note from Mike Prato, President

“”

There is no human antidote that closes this gap other than our faith in the redemptive nature of Christ in our lives.

Formation in faith, for me, began with exemplary priests in my life; Fr. Pomissani, who baptized me and heard my first confession and gave me my first communion, Fr. McGinnis, who formed my altar boy experience and taught me Latin, Fr. McEachern and Fr. Gallagher, who taught me that a priestly example is a balanced life, and of course, those priests in my life today, such as Fr. Ed White, Bishop Joe Tyson and Father Jack Schrum, who hold their priestly responsibilities as God intended; shepherding their flocks against the challenges of a world that resists holiness. So, armed with those formation moments, what else is there? Maggie Gallagher, the executive director of the Benedict XVI Institute for Sacred Music and Divine Worship, wrote a beautiful reflection in USA Today, “Why am I still Catholic?” Maggie says, “What is it like to be a Catholic these past few weeks, knowing the sins and alleged crimes of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and the abuses by the Pennsylvania grand jury report?” You will see my response immediately below hers in italics.

1. “What is the alternative? Where would I go?” It’s true that in a world that today as in the past is full of injustice, fear, pain, illness, betrayal and suffering and which ends everywhere inevitably in death, God sent his only Son to die for our sins. To prove evil does not rule, he told us to eat his body and drink his blood (Eucharist) and to be faithful to the grace-filled sustenance of the sacraments. I am counting on that. 2. “The unfolding secular worldview is not very attractive---so obviously marked by anxieties, anger and chaotic impulses (without any moral compass) it is no more capable of delivering on its promises of perfection than any other human thing.” That is true! I have tried it and it has left me empty and without hope. 3. “The gap between the ideal and the real is one of the most persistent human realities.” There is no human antidote that closes this gap other than our faith in the redemptive nature of Christ in our lives. Turn to the lives of the Saints for further encouragement. For more from our president click here www.kennedyhs.org

We are laying the groundwork for increased student support services.

As we continue to review our accreditation recommendations, we are laying the groundwork for increased student support services. In order to meet our students needs in career and college planning, we added a new position to our Counseling Department. Maurice Jones is our new Career and College Coordinator. In his position he will be coordinating college visits, updating scholarship information and hosting college application and financial aid workshops. He will continue to grow and implement our annual Career Day. Maurice is available to meet with students to discuss career pathways and will assist the counselors with determining appropriate post high school options. The counselors will continue to meet with their students, working with them on their college applications and course planning. The counselors and career and college coordinator have already offered a Senior Family Night and additional information sessions are scheduled for all grade levels. In addition, the counselors will now be offering social/emotional groups as well as continuing to meet with students 4

individually to provide support. We are excited about the counseling department reorganization and how it will best support our students at Kennedy Catholic and prepare them for their future. Our Campus Life Office is partnering with our Parent Club to offer a monthly Parent University. Parent Universities will cover topics centered on raising a teenager in today’s society. Our first university was held in September and offered suicide prevention training through our partnership with Forefront. The sessions are held from 5-6pm before our Parent Club meetings. During the month of October, we also enter into our retreat season. Our fall SEARCH Retreat will begin on Thursday, October 25. Please keep our retreatants in your prayers as they enter into their encounters with Christ. Where two or more are gathered in my name, I am there with them. Matthew 18:20

NIGHT OUT FOR THE HOMELESS Reflection by Paisley S.

Kennedy Catholic’s St. Vincent de Paul Club held the annual Night Out for the Homeless on September 29. This event brought together students from a variety of grades and teacher advisors including Mr. Ralston, Mrs. Hines, Sra. Hellar, and Sra. Moffat. We met in the Dillman Center to organize food, clothing, and hygiene items donated by the participants and other students and teachers throughout the school. We then took our belongings out to the breezeway, where we slept outside in solidarity with Seattle’s homeless population. The St. Vincent de Paul officers lead prayer and reflection each hour, inviting the participants to open themselves up to the experience and consider alternate lifestyles and perspectives. Mrs. Hines shared with us the importance of protecting the dignity of each person we encounter, especially those who are struggling financially and may be living on the streets. We reflected on how to spread hope, love, and peace to

others, even by doing something simple such as smiling, waving, or letting someone know we are praying for them. After spending the night outside, we went back into the Dillman Center for a pancake breakfast cooked by Sra. Hellar. A St. Vincent de Paul representative, Thomas, visited with us and led us to the realization that those who are homeless are people just like us, with names, dreams, and individual backgrounds that make them unique. We often disregard their humanity, because it is easier to ignore their right to dignity and respect than to seriously consider the suffering they must endure every day they are homeless. The Night Out allowed students to consider the world from a different perspective and encouraged mindfulness in our attitudes toward marginalized groups who endure suffering we can only begin to understand. This eye-opening night shed light on the issue of homelessness and options for alleviating others’ suffering through volunteer work, compassionate interaction, and prayer.

LANCER HOMECOMING 2018 Fr. Jose Alverez opened our 2018 Homecoming week activities with a beautiful mass accompanied by Fr. Michael Batterberry and Fr. Louis Cunningham ’10, who delivered a moving homily. On Friday, the Band, Excalibur choir, and Cheer team made the homecoming assembly one to remember. Highline stadium was filled to capacity on Saturday with students, faculty, parents, and alumni all gathered together to see the Lancers come out on top; winning the game 49-45. Go Lancers! Cheerleaders and players surrounded the student section to sing their alma mater, a much-loved Kennedy Catholic tradition. The special day ended with the 2018 Homecoming dance, which took place in the Goodwin Memorial Gymnasium. Students danced the night away at the Hollywood themed event. Thank you to everyone for ‘coming home’ to join us and for making homecoming week an amazing celebration of the Lancer family.

TEACHER HIGHLIGHT: MR. BARBAROSSA What classes do you teach at Kennedy Catholic? I teach Honors Paschal Mystery and Morality, AP Calculus (AB), and AP Calculus (BC). Why did you pursue a career in teaching? I have wanted to be a teacher ever since I was young. From my early childhood, my parents worked to instill in me a love of learning. Everything was a learning experience. Walking to the park to feed the ducks presented an opportunity to learn about animals and their habitats; arranging magnetic letters on the refrigerator enabled me to practice spelling; listening to my parents read aloud to me improved my vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. During the summers of my grade school years, I would create worksheets on various topics – math, science, grammar, theology – and assign them to my younger brother for homework. As he completed these assignments, I would grade them and record his scores. Furthermore, throughout my sixteen years in Catholic schools, I was blessed to learn from many teachers who were passionate about their areas of study and skilled at clearly communicating content to their students. Together, these three influences – my parents, my teachers, and my enjoyment of the activities associated with education – inspired me to pursue a career in teaching. Why did you decide to teach at Kennedy Catholic? I am passionate about my Catholic faith, and so I desire to work in a setting where I can share my faith with my students. I am also thankful that our school has taken the unusual step of combining Math and Theology classes means that I can teach both of my favorite subjects. What is your favorite part of teaching at Kennedy Catholic? I am blessed to work with terrific students. They are focused, motivated, and eager to learn. It is truly a joy to be in the classroom with them on a daily basis. Plus, I very much enjoy the content of the classes I teach. I can’t imagine a better day at work than one in which a number of Kennedy Catholic’s best and brightest students and I solve a separable differential equation, find the area of a region bound by a polar curve, and participate in a Socratic seminar that considers historical evidence for Christ’s resurrection. How do you impact the lives of your students? Oftentimes, we teachers may neither see nor know the impact we have on our students. Perhaps that is God’s way of cultivating in us the virtue of humility. Nevertheless, it is my prayer that God is somehow able to work through me to reach my students so they might experience a glimpse of the great love he has for them. My deepest desire for my students is this: that their studies and indeed all their educational experiences either now or later will lead them closer to Christ.

ALUMNI PROFILE: KATIE BURNS ‘90 With Homecoming festivities happening all around her, Katie (McCurdy) Burns ’90, is focused on keeping things running smoothly. From spirit days, to an all-school Mass, to a football game and dance, the over 800 students at Kennedy Catholic have a unique experience which is overseen by Katie. As the new Dean of Students, Katie takes her years of passion and experience to make sure each student is acknowledged and a part of the Lancer community. Formerly the Activities Coordinator, many alums will remember her from leadership classes, spirit assemblies, and coaching cheer. As a student, she participated in Natural Helpers, drill team, debate, and student government. Always a leader, Katie became an example of the impact students can have on their school. During her freshman year, originally driven by a bet, Katie was 10

www.kennedyhs.org

Fueled by her passion for her school community, returning to Kennedy Catholic only seemed natural. She sought out Jack Schuster, the principal at the time, and informed him of her intent to come back as soon as she completed her certificate at Seattle University to teach English. Connecting with the students has always been easy. As she puts it, “my students inspire me to be the best I can at Kennedy Catholic. They are the reason I do what I do. I think working in a high school does wonders for keeping me young and energetic.” Ever since she came back to Kennedy Catholic, Katie has found ways to bring students together into a community like the one she treasured as a student. She has built activities and developed programming for students, including establishing the Senior brunch. Adding even more fun to her life is her family. Katie loves to watch them play the sports they are passionate about, particularly basketball. Seeing them work together, put their best into a project, and be successful is so rewarding. In the future, Katie sees her granddaughter joining the Lancer family she’s devoted so much of her time to as part of the Class of 2032. But for now, this year, this week, this day, Katie sees a world of possibility for Lancers as we welcome everyone home.

HOMECOMING REFLECTION: ALICE SHEPARD ‘90 Hello, Lancers! It is truly an honor and pleasure to be here, to be back “home” at Kennedy Catholic. I am a proud graduate of the class of 1990. I came here after finishing up at St. Anthony’s. I was both excited and nervous about following in the footsteps of my two older sisters. So many of my memories of Kennedy Catholic are from right here in this gym. Almost three decades ago I stood just about where I am right now at an assembly. I held a microphone in my trembling hand. And I nervously shared an announcement about an upcoming volleyball game. And it was here in this gym, my senior year, where I danced with my homecoming date. That year, for the very first time ever, homecoming was held here at home. I’m glad to see a return to that tradition this year. Most significantly, it was always in this space where our entire school family came together to celebrate the Sacred

Liturgy, just as we are doing today. On my very first day as a student here, I learned something about the design of this campus that has always stuck with me. I learned it during freshman orientation on my tour of the school. The senior leading my group stopped in the middle of A-wing, in front of the doors to the chapel. Before we entered, he pointed out that this sacred space sat at the heart of our school, all the other buildings surrounded it. He explained what this meant--Christ is at the center of all we do here. Nothing could be more important than this. When we put Christ at the center of our lives, everything else falls into its proper place. You can see Christ at work in the way we treat one another at Kennedy Catholic. Rooted in the knowledge that we are all created in the image and likeness of God, we recognize the infinite worth, dignity, and beauty of those around us--and ourselves. A crucifix in every classroom reminds us of the inclusive nature of God’s overabundant love. All of this helps us to remember that EVERYONE deserves respect and kindness. You can see Christ at work in the faculty and staff here at Kennedy Catholic. They strive to ensure every student feels known and loved. I was a quiet Lancer. I preferred not to attract attention to myself. But every year, whether I liked it or not, there was a least one teacher who nudged me out of my shell, helping me to build my confidence. There was also my coach who entrusted me with leadership responsibilities, because HE believed in me--even when I doubted myself. This supportive and nurturing environment makes Kennedy Catholic a place where all students Read More

PRESIDENT’S LETTER (CONT.) (continued from page 3) 4. Check out the Book of Job. “God refuses to answer any of Job’s questions about why the innocent suffer. . . At the end, God just shows up. . . That is the point, if He is real, then there is an answer. If God does not exist, the suffering and injustice remain, but there is no answer.” I recall the day my then, three-month old grandson, Declan, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. Generally, a death sentence, I remember taking my daughter’s hand and praying for God’s divine healing hand. The prayers never end and four years later, a clean bill of health. I must believe that He exists, and it is my surrendering this to His care that defines His care for me. 5. “It seems cowardly to flee this burden and unfair to the victims.” That is my stubborn nature. Philippian’s 1:6 captures this well: And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. God has begun a good work in the Catholic Church and his faithful followers. He will see it through.

skulls of erring priests, with bishops as their signposts.” St. John writes this in the 3rd century, so we know our Church has not been without its scandals, but for 2000 years, while this moment in time is incredibly dark, and the abuse appears to have metastasized, it has withstood the worldly influences of sin, because of faithful priests and bishops! Archbishop Peter Sartain, in his recent letter to the people of the Archdiocese of Seattle, urges,” All of us together must cling to Christ. In the midst of these very troubling scandals, he calls us to come even closer to himself, to allow him to feed us with his Word and Sacrament, and to pray for the purification and healing of the Church. You can count on my prayers and those over every priest, we ask for yours.” Faithfully, Mike Prato For further reflection, read the official statement of Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, September 8-9, 2018 here.

That is my Catholic faith, but I know it is not without its challenges. St. John Chrysostom writes, “The road to hell is paved with the
