COMMUNI-K PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE One Saturday afternoon, my wife Laura and I met close friends for an early dinner at Anthony’s in Des Moines. As we sat down to order, the manager approached us and wanted to thank us for recently accepting his daughter. She is an amazing student, musician and soccer player.

Also, he hastened to add, is a very faith filled young woman. What was great about reading her application file? She is everything Kennedy Catholic values! It wasn’t hard to give our stamp of approval.

Just when the appetizer was arriving, a gentleman from the table behind me approached. “I couldn’t help but over hear your conversation. I am just returning from a classmate’s funeral (Class of 1984). When I heard that gentleman talk to you about his daughter, my mind went back to the funeral, the amazing number from our class Mike Prato - President in attendance and just how much we value each other and our time at Kennedy [Catholic]. I have been watching you over the past 11 years.

You promote academics, faith and the well-rounded student while maintaining the school identity. Thank you for taking care of our alma mater.”

Feeling thankful, we finished appetizers and then dinner. As we were about to leave, a young man, Class of 2008, approached me. “Do you remember me?” I did indeed, remember him. “I wanted to introduce my wife. We are about to have a baby. I am an engineer and doing really well. It is because of my four years at Kennedy Catholic that I am the man I am today. My wife went to (another local school) and wishes she had attended. Our daughter will absolutely be a Lancer. Thank you.”

Over this past year, it has been my pleasure to tell our story as Kennedy Catholic’s first President. Having three generations of Lancers agree on what has defined them and what will define them can only be separated by time and hair styles! As we enter our 50th year, we ask God to continue to grace our alma mater as the apostolate named back in 1966: “Our friend and alma mater, John F. Kennedy!”

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

A Message To The Class of 2016 Way Opens….” I see this picture and I wonder what is around the corner? Today you are all standing in the threshold, unable to see around the corner, but getting ready to take that first step into the light.

“Way Opens…” I look at this picture and I always think of the words I first encountered in a book by Parker Palmer. There is a sense of anticipation, of eagerness to move through the shadows and see what lies beyond. I believe in the power of doors and door ways. I believe doors and paths are set before us in the time we are most ready for them- though we may not realize it.

Every one of you who will cross the stage tonight will come to a new door- it may be a four year college, a two year college. It may be into the military, or into the work force.

It may be into a call to religious ministry, it may be to a journey of self- whatever the door is, Kennedy Catholic has prepared you well.

My wish for you is that whatever the door, you have listened for your call- that you are following God’s plan for you.

Just about 1 year ago today I crossed a new threshold, through a new door and answered my call. I remember standing in this very cafeteria, watching and listening as the seniors of 2015 prepared for graduation and celebrated the beginning of their new journey. I remember the tangible feeling of family and fellowship. I remember a sense of peace, that I had heard a call to serve and had answered and that at that moment, I felt I was where God intended me to be.

We have asked quite a bit of you during your time at Kennedy Catholic. We have pushed you to explore your relationship with Christ and to listen for His voice. What is His plan for you?

Don’t worry if you haven’t heard it yet. Sometimes the journey to the life intended for you begins today, sometimes it takes a few twists along the path. Sometimes you enter through doors, but realize they weren’t the right one. Sometimes you find a door closed- and a new one open. That’s ok, the call will come in His time, when you are ready to answer.

What we ask of you today is just that you listen- that you stand at the threshold of the door and be ready and willing to enter. An old Quaker saying is this- “let your life speak...” and it is what we ask of you today. Let your life speak of the service you have given, let your life speak of the knowledge you have acquired, let your life speak of the athletics and extracurricular activities you have participated in, let your life speak of the friendships you have made, of the mentors you have had and of the followers of Christ you have become.

We ask that you let your life speak and hopefully, as Parker Palmer states “every journey, honestly undertaken, stands a chance of taking us toward the place where our deep gladness meets the world’s deep need.” We wish this for you. That you hear your call- that your greatest gladness will meet the world’s deepest need.

I see this picture of a doorway- of sunlight and corners, and I think of beginnings- of possibilities. And I know and trust in these words from the Gospel of Luke: Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you.

For what do you ask? What are you seeking? Are you knocking?

What is your call? Where will your way take you?

Good luck and God’s blessings upon you as you step over the threshold and into the sunlit path.

Inaugural Internship Program This spring, Kennedy Catholic students from the Blessed Mother Teresa program participated in a pilot internship program. We are most grateful to the 10 volunteers who hosted the seniors for this unique and extremely valuable experience.

The students developed resumes and cover letters, met with their sponsors for a simulated interview experience and proceeded to spend 3 full days in a real working environment. The results vastly exceeded our expectations. The students learned valuable skills and life lessons and the hosts were very pleased with the quality of work and enthusiasm of each student. Most have already offered to assist every year!

We hope to grow this program significantly in the coming years. Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who made it possible!

2016 - 2017 Scholarship Award Recipients Each year Kennedy Catholic High School offers several scholarship opportunities to returning students. Each award has unique criteria and application questions. The 2016 - 2017 scholarship award recipients are listed below.

Rosellini Memorial Scholarship Recipients: Nick B. and Olivia P. The Governor Albert Rosellini Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of the late Governor of the State of Washington whose grandchildren and great grandchildren have attended Kennedy Catholic High School. Rosellini served as Governor from 1957 to 1965 although he remained active in leadership and politics until his death in 2011 at the age of 101. Every year, a dedicated group of family members and Lancer friends gather for a scholarship dinner at Kennedy Catholic to raise funds to sustain this award given to two students annually.

Christopher Bowne Memorial Scholarship Recipient: Allison Z. The Christopher Bowne Memorial Scholarship was established by Chris’ parents, Roberta and David and his brother Ron, in his memory following his tragic death in 2009. Christopher graduated from Kennedy Catholic in 2007 and attended Western Washington University. Roberta, David and Ron look for candidates who reflect Christopher’s personality.

Patrick Witkowski Memorial Scholarship Recipient: Diana D. The Patrick Witkowski Memorial Scholarship was established by Patrick’s parents, Tracy and Paul, in his loving memory after his death in 2013. Patrick graduated from Kennedy Catholic in 2009 and was a student at Washington State University.

Patrick loved his time at Kennedy Catholic and would be touched to help Lancers succeed during their high school journey. The scholarship is awarded based on responses to questions that Pat’s parents, Paul and Tracy, developed which align to the characteristics Patrick portrayed while attending Kennedy Catholic. Those characteristics include; faith, leadership and random acts of friendship.

Sr. Rose Marie Dillman Memorial Scholarship Recipient: Karianne B. Sister Rose Marie Dillman, SP, entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Providence on May 18, 1945. She taught at numerous Catholic grade schools throughout the region and she also served as Principal at Sacred Heart School, Tacoma, and Holy Family School, Seattle. Having worked at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School for 27 years, on February 8, 2009, the school dedicated the Sister Rose Marie Dillman Center, created and named in her honor, by the past and present alumni, students, faculty and administration. She retired in 1995 but still had a daily presence at the school and was always considered it’s number one fan. Sr. Rose Marie Dillman, a Sister of Providence for 68 years, passed away on April 25, 2014. This memorial scholarship is dedicated to her memory and her many years of service to the students and community of Kennedy Catholic.

2016 - 2017 Scholarship Award Recipients Meagan E. Smith Memorial Scholarship Recipients: Rose N. and Noah W. Kennedy Catholic suffered a heartbreaking tragedy with the loss of Meagan Smith, Class of 2012 Kennedy Catholic Alumna. The Meagan E. Smith Memorial Scholarship was established in loving memory of Meagan. Funds for this scholarship are made possible through the generosity of the Smith family and friends, who are continually working to honor Meagan’s memory. Awards are based on leadership, school and community involvement and academic standing.

Randy Terlicker Memorial Scholarship Recipient: Ginelle C. More than 20 years after his death, Randy Terlicker continues to help save lives. The Terlicker Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of the fallen firefighter. Randy was one of four firefighters killed while battling the Pang warehouse fire in January 1995. He was nearly a five-year veteran of the Seattle Fire Department. Through the generosity of the Terlicker family, this scholarship was established in Randy’s memory to assist students from Holy Family Seattle Parish to attend Kennedy Catholic High School.

The Paynton Scholarship Recipient: Liam M. After completing 36 years as a Lancer, Jim Paynton retired at the end of 2015.

He led our band and orchestra programs for nearly four decades and impacted countless students, parents, and alumni. Jim is humble about his accomplishments, yet he inspired confidence and a deep joy for music in a generation of students.

He received many awards during his time as an educator. He was a team-builder, a mentor, visionary and tirelessly dedicated to Kennedy Catholic. His students have gone on to become adults who value music, community and high expectations.

Each student he served was blessed to have him as a teacher. Through this scholarship, his legacy will continue for years to come.

Alumni News & Reunions Jeffrey Moore ‘06 and three other seminarians have received their call to orders. This month they will take part in a transitional deacon ordination which will take place at St. Bernadette’s in Seattle at 11am. Bishop Elizondo will be presiding over the event. Alumnus Profile: J. Michael Diaz ‘92 Congratulations to Lancer alumnus Michael Diaz for his very impressive recognition from the US White House. Last month, President Obama nominated him to serve on the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. Michael’s nomination is currently pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Michael immigrated from Peru to Seattle when he was seven months old. Mike’s family settled in Ballard and, in middle school, moved down to the White Center/Burien area. His family spoke Spanish exclusively at home. He was the first and remains the only lawyer in his large Latino family.

After graduating from Kennedy Catholic, Mike received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, magna cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame. He then was a graduate student at Princeton University, studying classical philosophy for two years. Mike received his law degree (JD) from Cornell Law School in 2002. Following law school, Mike was an associate in the Houston office of the international law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, litigating complex commercial and white collar criminal matters. Upon returning home in 2006, Mike joined Yarmuth Wilsdon Calfo, litigating the same types of cases.

Since 2008, Mike has been an Assistant United States Attorney and, since 2011, also the Civil Rights Program Coordinator for the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington. He has investigated and/ or prosecuted a wide variety of civil rights matters such as housing, employment and educational matters, disability and service members’ rights. Mike has been on faculty at the DOJ’s National Advocacy (Training) Center.

Since returning home in 2006, Mike has volunteered at the King County Bar Association’s Neighborhood Legal Clinic Program’s Spanish Language Legal Clinic, and is the Chair of the Spanish Clinic Subcommittee of the Program’s Advisory Committee. He is a past fellow of the Washington Initiative for Diversity’s Judicial Institute, a member of the Judicial Evaluation Committee for the Latino Bar Association of Washington, a rater for the YMCA Mock Trial High School Competition, and has volunteered in many capacities at his daughters’ elementary school, including as a soccer coach and moot court judge. He currently lives in Seattle with his wife and two daughters.

Michael has many fond memories of his days at Kennedy Catholic, and we are proud to call him a “Lancer for Life”!

NW Catholic Winning Spirit Award Gabbi P. ‘16 was selected for the June NW Catholic Winning Spirit award. Gabi is a two-year captain of the track team and qualified for the State meet as a junior in the 300-meter hurdles. She’s also active in the Science Club and is a Link Crew leader, retreat leader and senior class coordinator. As a junior, she began volunteering three hours a week at Highline Medical Center. A member of St. Anthony Parish in Renton, she carries a 3.9 GPA. Peter F. ‘16 was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from NW Catholic for being selected as the Winning Spirit Student of the Year. Peter founded Kennedy Catholic’s Lancers against Cancer (Relay for Life) and has shared his personal cancer experience at fund-raisers through both Northwest Sarcoma and Seattle Children’s Orthopedic Guild. He will be attending the University of Pennsylvania next fall and plans to double major in nursing and business. He is a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Federal Way and carries at 3.95 GPA.

Rotary Students of the Month Each month the Burien White Center Rotary recognizes students who:

• Continuously provide service to the local community and/or in the community outside the school

• Maintain a positive attitude toward others and toward learning

• Act respectful to peers and teachers • Work to improve and/or maintain good grades • Practice good citizenship • Actively participate in classroom discussions and activities

Congratulations to Kit B. ‘16 and Matthew W. ‘16, the May Rotary Students of the Month. Kit and Matthew were honored at the May Rotary luncheon. Allison Reddy, Mathematics Department Chair, attended the event.

The “Egg Baby” Project For a week in May, a group of 38 seniors decided to take part in the “Egg Baby” project as part of the Christian Lifestyles unit on parenting. While there is little comparison between an egg and a child, the egg baby experience does, however, provide an opportunity to think about, be aware of, and take care of something fragile, similar to how having a child pulls a parent outside of oneself. “I see this project as an opportunity for our students to feel a sense of discomfort, inconvenience, and responsibility,” said Jenny Farrell, Director of Campus Ministry. This event counted towards each students grade.

Smith v. Arizona Mock Supreme Court Kennedy Catholic social justice and public policy students took part in a mock supreme court trial. The students argued a mock case, Smith v. Arizona. This trial was to determine whether it was legal or not to require American citizens to carry proof of citizenship for medical treatment. Allison G. played the role of Chief Justice, while Olivia S. argued the case.

Summer Immersion Trips to Cambodia and Ireland The week after school is out two groups are headed abroad for cultural immersion. Both groups have spent the last school year attending classes in preparation for their trips: Cambodia students have met at zero hour twice a week since November, while Ireland students have met twice a month on Wednesday evenings for three hours. The students going to Ireland served once a month at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Queen Anne for their Wednesday Night Dinners, and Cambodia students will perform their service learning in the country as part of their travel and immersion. The Ireland trip commences on June 15; Cambodia on June 16. The students will be gone about 2 weeks each.

A Journey Down Under – Happening Summer 2017 Down Under on the other side of the globe, the people of Australia and New Zealand have much to boast about, including exotic wildlife, natural beauty, and fascinating indigenous cultures. Students at Kennedy Catholic have the opportunity to experience all of this and more – including the Hobbiton movie set, dancing the haka in an authentic Maori village, and cuddling with a koala bear and feeding kangaroos at the Night Zoo. They will snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, surf at Manly Beach, and shop Sydney Harbor. Moreover, make lasting friendships visiting our Catholic sister school, Emmaus College, in beautiful Melbourne. Emmaus host families will share adventures in their special city.

Congratulations, Class Of 2016!

On Friday, June 3, we celebrated the 2016 Baccalaureate Mass with Father Bryan Dolejsi presiding. Haydon C. was chosen by his peers to speak. Below is an excerpt from his speech. Later that evening at the graduation ceremonies, Haydon received the Lanigan-Kelley Award. The Lanigan-Kelley Award, is in honor of Jim Lanigan and Dave Kelley, two members of the Kennedy Catholic Class of 1977. This award is selected by faculty and awarded to the student who has a positive outlook on life and has participated in extracurricular activities while at Kennedy Catholic. Congratulations to Haydon and we wish him good look at Cal Poly next year.

“I am extremely proud to be a part of such an inspiring graduating class of students and honored to have the opportunity to speak on our behalf today. My classmates have grown into mature individuals whom I look up to, leaders, musicians, athletes, scholars and genuine friends. My classmates are making a difference in the community.

Today, the gospel reflects “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Many students among our graduating class have shown their light. Andy W. published his own book and donates his profits to provide necessities to children in need. Marie S. inspires all of us as she chases her dreams in L.A as a professional dancer. Peter F. continues to make a difference in the community as he follows his ambitions to spread awareness for cancer and pursue his career helping those suffering. Maggie G. and Shayne M. have dedicated countless hours to perfect their athletic abilities; they both have been recognized as a Gatorade Player of the Year and will be going D1 next year. Janni just received his Eagle Scout in only two years, an achievement almost unheard of in scouting and Caroline M. can silence a room as she hits perfect notes on the violin.

Over the past four years, we have developed skills that we will utilize for the rest of our lives. As the gospel says “Shine your light.” It is our time to go onward with our lives, sharing our talents, faith and experiences with others and making a difference in the world. I look forward to seeing the path each member of our class takes and the happiness and love their future brings to them. We came to this school not sure if we were in the right place and now we leave as part of the Lancer family. The first day of school we woke up and drove to the same destination, now we will leave to a new destination, but we will always have the support of our classmates and Lancer family.

Lancer Legacy Awards Save the Date: January 14, 2017

Kennedy Catholic High School has a long-standing tradition of providing an outstanding education to 50 years of students. Lancers have been nurtured by words of encouragement and challenge. They have experienced pep rallies and assemblies, music and theater, retreats and liturgies, community service and immersion travel, art, history, math, science, English, foreign language and more. The result; this school has become what we know it to be today.

To mark this unique time in our history, Kennedy Catholic will host a special awards program to honor our past, experience our today and in so doing, set the foundation to inspire Kennedy Catholic’s next 50 years.

The Lancer Legacy Awards will showcase the high caliber of the school’s alumni and celebrate the depth and breadth of their professional accomplishments and service to the community. For 50 years, Kennedy Catholic alumni have been innovating, risk taking, creating, collaborating, and problem solving, contributing in innumerable ways to the world in which we live. As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration, Kennedy Catholic will share and highlight stories of accomplished alumni whose foundation in Catholic education contributes to the work they do and the passions they’ve discovered.

We want to ensure the accomplishments of our alumni are highlighted at an event where they can receive recognition from their peers while still allowing us the opportunity to celebrate the impact they are making in their communities and around the world.” – President, Mike Prato

Award Criteria • Must be a Kennedy Catholic High School graduate.

• May have military service in place of graduation.

• Nominees will have distinguished themselves through their work, personal accomplishments, or in the lives of others.

• Award may be given posthumously.

• Nominees must be in good standing in their community, past and present.

Nomination Process and Timeline

The nomination may be submitted by a friend, family member, or colleague. Nominations can be made by email but must be received in the Advancement Office before September 1, 2016.
