LEARNING, FAITH & LEADERSHIP A Kennedy Catholic Lancer Publication
COMMUNI-K PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “If I can see further, it is because I am standing on the shoulders of those that have come before me.” St. Augustine. This past month, I had the pleasure of having lunch at Mount St. Vincent with five former Lancer faculty. Gearing up for our 50th Anniversary year got Joe Faccone scurrying around to track down our Sisters of Providence. Two of my former teachers (Sisters RoseMarie Dillman and John Marie) had been my former lunch dates, until God called them home, so returning to the “Mount” was an excellent suggestion. Sr. Lucy Villanova, Sr. Anita Butler and Sr. Mary Wilson were simply delightful. Jack Fitterer, teacher, administrator and coach and of course, Joe Faccone rounded out my luncheon guests.
Mike Prato - President
Conversations drifted from their collective journey to Kennedy [Catholic], the impact of the community on them and their careers and some of the more memorable teaching moments (and the names of the more rascally students) were shared. The flowers I brought (Joe’s idea, my wallet) were greatly appreciated and guaranteed an invitation to return. On April 23, at precisely 7:35pm, I was honored to toast to the beginning of our 50th year kick off. “Celebrating our past to inspire our future.” We are committed to making that toast a reality in the coming months. Continue to keep your alma mater and this amazing school in your prayers.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Nancy Bradish - Principal
May has arrived, and while we are preparing for the end of the school year, and all of the celebrations that will ensue, we are also planning for the upcoming school year. We are excited to announce that Kennedy Catholic High School has been accepted as a TEALS partner school for the 2016-2017 school year. TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) is a grassroots program that recruits, mentors and places passionate high tech professionals into high school classes as part-time teachers. This is a wonderful opportunity to team up with TEALS to bring computer science courses to our students. The professional brings his or her subject knowledge and will join one of our classroom teachers, Mr. Ryan Kyler, in a team-teaching model. TEALS provides training for both parties as well as course outlines based on successful college courses. This fall we will offer the “Introduction to Computer Science” course. The introductory class is based on the award winning UC Berkeley CS10 course and is adapted specifically for high schools in conjunction with UC Berkeley.
To learn more about the TEALS program, and to find information about volunteering for the TEALS program at Kennedy Catholic High School, please visit the website www.tealsk12.org. We continue to look forward and expand our program offerings, and the addition of the TEALS program is a vital new component to our business and technology curriculum.

Freshman Videos: Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching
Last week students in Mr. Patulot’s freshman religion class were studying the Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching. In small groups they were assigned one of the themes and then randomly selected a movie genre from a bucket. They set out to make a movie trailer about the Catholic Social Teaching theme using the movie genre. The video was to answer three important questions: definition of the theme, why it is important to the Catholic Church, and the theme’s relevance to teens. Editing was done during class time and at home. Most videos were filmed using an iPhone and the clips were shared through Google Docs and posted on Edmodo. Watch some of our favorites! www.kennedyhs.org

50th Anniversary KATCH Auction 2016 - A Night to Remember On April 23, our community came together to support the 2016 KATCH Auction – Celebrating 50 years of Kennedy Catholic. It was a tremendously successful, exceptionally fun, absolutely magical evening. A very special thank you to Auction Chairs Drew and Laurie Davies along with an amazing group of parent volunteers who were dedicated to creating a night with one thing in mind - Kennedy Catholic High School students. The KATCH Auction would not be possible without our volunteers. The event raised over $189,000 to help support our Library remodel. Our entire student body, and students for many years to come, will directly benefit from this transformational project. The gratitude we have for every sponsor, volunteer, donation, helping hand, great idea, and tireless effort cannot be fully expressed. Thank you everyone for making our 2016 KATCH Auction a successful, special and nostalgic evening.

Varsity Baseball Team Wins Seamount League Title for the Third Straight Year Boys varsity baseball has done it again! They’ve taken home their third straight Seamount League Champion title. On May 7, they opened up with a 15-0 win over Prairie. We moved forward in the winners bracket and played Enumclaw. Lancers started off with a quick 3-0 lead but Enumclaw rallied back to take a 6-3 lead. The Lancers kept it exciting battling back to score two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning but just fell short with a 6-5 loss. They next game is Wednesday May 11 at Heidelberg Park in Tacoma 7:00pm vs. North Thurston. Winner of that game then plays May 14 10:00am vs. the Hazen/Bonney Lake winner at Heidelberg Park. That winner secures a trip to state but will play for seeding May 14 4:00pm at Heidelberg Park. Go Lancers!

She also secured an amazing game highlight when she shot 83,80 to win by one stroke over Bellevue’s Meg McMullen.
Maggie went 5 for 5 at the plate with three walks, three stolen bases and three home runs, eight runs scored and nine RBI’s. The shortstop didn’t have any errors in the Lancers two victories over Highline and Renton.

• Continuously provide service to the local community and/or in the community outside the school
• Maintain a positive attitude toward others and toward learning
• Act respectful to peers and teachers • Work to improve and/or maintain good grades • Practice good citizenship • Actively participate in classroom discussions and activities

Becoming an Eagle Scout Only four percent of Boy Scouts are granted this prestigious rank. Each Eagle Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges and demonstrate Scout Spirit, which requires the Scout to plan, organize, lead and manage an extensive service project. The Scout must then complete a board of review, upon which a committee reviews and finalizes the rank advancement. Congratulations to Jan R. on this amazing accomplishment!

Alumni Profile: Phyllis Knopp ‘80 Alumna Phyllis Knopp recently joined us back on campus for the first time since she graduated in 1980. She gave a fascinating presentation to our Science Club on her 25+ year career as a forensic psychologist at Western State Hospital where she conducts pre-trial forensic evaluations with inmates. After graduating a Lancer, Phyllis received a BS degree in Psychology from Seattle University and a Master’s and PhD from the California School of Professional Psychology. She enjoyed her visit to Kennedy Catholic as much as the students enjoyed meeting her. She was particularly impressed with the new third floor science labs where she made her presentation to nearly 50 students. She noted the dress code has definitely changed as she was only allowed to wear dark colored pants and jeans were strictly prohibited! She summed it up best by saying “It’s always good to meet motivated and intelligent young people because I feel our future is in good hands!” Thank you Phyllis—you are truly a Lancer for Life!

Junior Class Achieves Over 7,000 Hours of Community Service Every year Kennedy Catholic focuses on serving others as a way of life. From freshmen who serve their families, to sophomores who serve their school and local churches, our school is brimming with hearts for others. Kennedy Catholic juniors volunteered a minimum of thirty hours at many wonderful service agencies as part of their Integrated Service Learning Experience. You might have seen Lancers early on a Saturday morning cleaning up a local park with EarthCorps. They might have been working on a team build with Habitat for Humanity. A Lancer may have prepared donations at a food-bank or tutored children in an after-school program. Yes, Lancers were everywhere, lending a hand, and being transformed in the process. They traveled to New Orleans, Cambodia, and Ireland to serve food to the hungry, tutor refugees, support families going through cancer, build homes, and preserve the environment. Yes, Lancers are truly men and women for others! We want to give special thanks and acknowledgment to all the agencies where our students volunteered. This year we accomplished over seven thousand hours of community service for our junior class. Great job Lancers! Alexandre De Rhode Vietnamese School

Featured Teachers This new section is designed to highlight the creativity, dedication and accomplishments of our Kennedy Catholic teachers. Each month, we will feature teachers who are pushing the boundaries and doing unique and challenging exercises to further develop the mind, body and spirit of their students.
Daisy Lu - Mandarin Chinese
Here’s a welcoming invitation to learn Mandarin:
• An ancient philosophy that enlightens the world • Early major scientific contributions • Unique language embodying the above
• World’s second largest economy, and still growing • A civilization of 5,000 years
With it’s stable economy and a growing population, this is the century of Asia. Look beyond Disney and Hollywood, beyond technology and science, beyond natural resources and humanitarian gestures, beyond world literature, history, and the fine and performing arts. Come join us to explore this wonderful language!
Charlie Beall - Bernoulli’s Principle
Ever wonder how a plane flies? The Bernoulli Principle says that an increase in the speed of a fluid produces a decrease in pressure and that a decrease in the speed of a fluid produces an increase in pressure. Airplanes use this principle everyday to generate lift on their wings. This lift is what helps the plane fly. To demonstrate this principle, Mr. Beall’s students used a leaf blower and a roll of toilet paper. Very creative!
A Celebration of Diversity and Understanding On April 11 - 15, Kennedy Catholic students celebrated cultural week. Each day students learned about different cultures through foods, dance and entertainment. The students worked together to raise $382 for Heifer International, which helps supply goats, chickens and buffalo to developing countries. www.kennedyhs.org
