“JFK: On Shoulders of Giants.” What could be a more fitting title for the score written by the Grammy-winning composer and alumnus Mateo Messina ’90 to honor the 50th Anniversary of Kennedy Catholic High School? Each of the five decades since our founding has witnessed succeeding generations picking up the torch to ensure the vitality of Kennedy Catholic. Our early pioneers speak stories of the unwavering faith and conviction in the importance of sustaining and honoring our mission: to graduate leaders following Christ in a community that is accessible, diverse, and committed to pursuing the fullest potential of every student. At the Lancer Legacy Awards event on January 14, we heard countless personal reflections from our alumni whose words and collective memories of their time at the school made it an extraordinary night to remember. It was a joy and honor to celebrate the accomplishments of these individuals, while at the same time, it was an impassioned and moving reminder that our collective work together contributes to the success of our graduates. Their accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of excellence at Kennedy Catholic. “By your fruit, you will be recognized.” (Gospel of Matthew) The Lancer Family is stronger because of our collective whole. Throughout this year of celebration, our current students, parents, faculty and staff, volunteers, friends, and community members joined together with alumni to celebrate our past and inspire our future. If not for the hard work, dedication and generosity of those who came before, we would simply not be the great school we are today.

FRO M O U R CH A PLA I N

Last year, I had the honor to collaborate in authoring our 50th Anniversary prayer and the privilege to attend many of the events to pay tribute to Kennedy Catholic as an Archdiocese of Seattle high school serving our community for fifty years since its founding. On the evening of the Lancer Legacy Awards after praying the 50th Anniversary prayer with our community, I was able to join a number of the faculty and staff to enjoy the celebration. I found it a time to reflect on the past six years during which I served as chaplain to the school. Along with serving as the chaplain, I also have served as the Director of Vocations for the past six years which involves a great deal of travel both around the Archdiocese and to various seminaries to oversee our Seattle seminarians. Two years ago the Archbishop asked me to also serve as the Parish Priest at St. Benedict Parish and School in north Seattle. Although this has been a blessing, logistically it is very challenging to balance a parish and school, vocation office along with my other activities such as service on the Presbyteral Council and chairing the north Seattle deanery long range planning process. After talking with Mr. Prato last spring, I decided 2017 would be my last year at Kennedy Catholic. As a former Catholic high school teacher and coach, I am particularly proud of the opportunities to collaborate with the fine staff and parents in ministry and my work with so many wonderful students! It is with great sadness that I step away from serving as chaplain and am working with the Archdiocese in hopes of securing a great chaplain for the future. My time of ministry in our community has been filled with immense blessings and I will always consider Kennedy Catholic home. Thank you for your prayers and support!

Fr. Bryan Dolejsi

CHAPLAIN

Thank You Fr. Bryan! For the past six years Fr. Bryan Dolejsi has presided at over 54 all-school masses, 22 retreat masses, multiple class and sports masses, and heard countless confessions. He moderated the Ping Pong Club, headed up the Fish Fry during Lent, and attended countless sporting, band, choir, and extracurricular events. As a colleague in ministry, his support to faculty and staff, to our Campus Ministry Team, and to students is impossible to quantify as his presence is always larger-than-life. We are so grateful for his collegiality, his adaptation to being “prayerful but efficient” and most of all for his friendship in being companions on this journey of faith. “My favorite memory with Fr. Dolejsi is when he played in one of the basketball practices. He was by far the best on the court.” Trey Hunt ‘18 “What I so enjoyed about Fr. Bryan was hearing his laughter from the Campus Ministry’s office. His laughter filled the entire room and my heart, too.” Joanne Demarinis ’81 (Theology) “I appreciate Fr. Bryan for not only being our Chaplain but for coming and supporting various events around the school. I love how he helped with the basketball team and supports the baseball team because his brother is the coach. I love how he will see you in the halls and tell you that you had a good game.” Nick Blakely ‘17 “I love Fr. Bryan’s homilies because he invites us to reflect on a personal level. He is really easy to talk to. He will be missed!” Sloane Woodcock ‘17 Fr. Bryan giving his homily at the Senior Retreat in January

“Father Bryan is a great example of a holy priest. He makes loving God and living a holy life seem real because he lives it every day! I will miss his giant laugh, his love of Prince, and his 90s dance skills. He made all of us here feel like we were really friends with a priest, and that encouraged us to be holy. May God bless him in his next phase of ministry.” Aires Patulot (Campus Ministry) “During last year’s basketball championships, I went with Fr. Bryan to the Tacoma Dome, since I was stationed in Tacoma. I was able to capture a picture of him shouting in support, and I was struck by the dedication he showed to the team, which I am sure translated over to the entire school!” Louis Cunningham ’10 (Seminarian for Archdiocese of Seattle)

A 50th Anniversary Transformation Thanks to the incredible generosity of many donors and foundations, a complete renovation of the Kennedy Catholic library and technology center has changed the face of teaching and learning in our building forever. Students and faculty returned to school this fall to a beautiful and welcoming space that fosters learning and collaboration. It is our mission to ensure our students become critical thinkers, readers, and responsible users of social media and technology, for their own growth as young adults and as lifelong learners. The attractive, bright and accessible space is the perfect environment to fulfill this mission. The library design is focused on accessibility and flexibility. Its multi-use configuration allows for blended and collaborative learning and encourages student engagement. In just one short school year, the library has become the hub of learning and academic enhancement—just ask one of the many students who pack the library during lunch and breaks! The improvements to the library have also provided a place to archive and display school-owned materials and memorabilia related to the celebration of the life of President John F. Kennedy. The new space also serves as the technology hub for the school. Truly, the library has transformed our academic program and will continue to be an exciting information focal point of the school for decades to come. School librarian, Jen Parker-Haas, believes she has the best job in the world! In her words, however, “it’s not a ‘job’ so much as an opportunity to serve students and colleagues who make up the Lancer Family.” She considers the newly remodeled library a place of community, a place of study, a place of comfort and safety for all students. The library has become both an extension of the classroom as well as a place for independent study, creativity, research and fun! The new space is home to popular activities such as March Book Madness, Murder Mystery Dinners, and other creative programs to encourage use, literacy, and community.

We welcome all Lancers—alumni, families and friends—to pay a visit and experience the library first hand. It’s a magical place to get lost in a book!

May 29, 2017 would have been President John F. Kennedy’s 100th birthday. His legacy is honored here at Kennedy Catholic High School in the Library Museum and Archive Room. In school archives, there were campaign buttons, magazines, newspaper articles, and more collected through the years from dedicated teachers, staff and community members. Now, thanks to the hard work of Librarian Jen Parker-Haas, they are displayed and accessible for our community to truly appreciate. Hanging on the feature wall is a grayscale portrait of John F. Kennedy done by local artist and alumnus Pete Schille ‘81. As a student at Kennedy Catholic, Pete took advantage of the art classes that were offered—including drafting—and graduated with the goal of becoming an artist. Today, he is well-known for his work as a motor sports artist. We are honored that Pete and his family entrusted us with his work of art, and look forward to sharing his talent with many more visitors through the years. 5

On Saturday night, January 14, 2017, we celebrated the first ever Lancer Legacy Awards as a way to showcase the high caliber of the school’s alumni and celebrate the depth and breadth of their professional accomplishments and service to the community. Upon receiving their award, each honoree was able to reflect on the Catholic education foundation that contributes to the work they do and the passions they’ve discovered. Each honoree received an engraved Glassybaby candle. In the future, as these individuals light this candle, it is an opportunity to recall the words of St. Catherine of Siena: “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.” Their achievements have proven their ability to do just that. This year of celebrating our 50th anniversary would not have been possible without all of you, our Lancer Family. Thank you for helping us celebrate our past, and inspire our future.

“With Christmas break nearly upon us, I was called to the main office to greet Grammy-winning composer and Lancer alumnus, Mateo Messina ‘90. Mateo had graciously agreed to write, produce and orchestrate an original music score for the symphonic band and orchestra to play for our 50th anniversary celebration. He was on campus this day to deliver the score and to share his story with our students. Mateo’s story is extraordinary, but when he played the song track, his enormous genius was evident. He titled the piece JFK: On Shoulders of Giants. When the song concluded many of us were in tears, the room was silent, and together in that moment we witnessed and understood his vision. In one musical composition, Mateo captured that special something that makes Kennedy Catholic different from anyplace else. Somehow he captured what it means to be part of the Lancer Family.”

President Mike Prato

We were privileged to welcome Jim Dever as the emcee for the evening. Jim is one of the hosts of KING-TV’s “Evening” and is the winner of 18 Emmy Awards for writing, hosting, reporting, and producing.

honored with the Alumni Achievement Award

Lizanne Falsetto ‘81 is an entrepreneur, a foodie, a philanthropist, a mother, a mentor, and founder and CEO of one of the nation’s most successful and popular brands, thinkThin®. Lizanne was raised in Seattle in a large Italian family. Along with Tony Zapata, she was named “Best Dressed” of the senior class of Kennedy High in 1981. She was a committed and aggressive Lancer basketball player and when offered the choice between a college basketball scholarship and a contract to model overseas, Lizanne’s inner voice urged her to choose modeling, and she embarked on a successful decade-long career as an international runway and print model. During those years, Lizanne’s understanding of nutrition and its role in longevity, stamina, and joy deepened and broadened. Early on, Lizanne learned from her family that going out on top is wise. So at the top of her game in modeling, she moved back to the States where she continued to occasionally model as she explored her next steps. Remembering the portable meals eaten during her travels and the meals of her youth, she began to prepare snack bars in her kitchen starting with her grandmother’s cookie and brownie recipes. Thus began Lizanne’s life as an entrepreneur. Lizanne’s niece, Annalise Johnson, told us, “My Aunt Lizanne has been such an incredible role model in my life. Her hard work and dedication has always inspired me to follow my dreams and believe in myself.” Lizanne is a true visionary, active public speaker, and champion of female executive leadership. “As I traveled the world, I realized, wow, how lucky can I be to be raised in an environment with love and with incredible teachers and with the guidance to be good. I thank everybody at Kennedy Catholic and my family for that.

honored with the Alumni Achievement Award After graduating from Kennedy Catholic, Dave went on to Harvard University and Stanford Law School. Following an exceedingly successful law career, Dave formally retired last year and looks forward to spending more time with family and friends. Classmate and dear friend, Vince Cotroneo ‘71, told us, “I have been blessed to be best friends with Dave Anderson for over 50 years. Dave is a natural leader. He always led by example inspiring those around him. He served as captain of the football team and student body president in his senior year. He was named “All State” for football at the guard position and was a King County Scholar Athlete. Dave is the kind of person who accomplishes whatever he puts his mind to. Above all, he is a person you can always count on. It was rare to ever see him struggle, except when he was asking out his date to the senior prom. I bugged him to invite this girl Sherri and after lots of prodding, he finally asked her out. The rest is history. Dave and Sherri have been married forty years. Dave could not be more deserving of this award”

“There are three things for which I am most grateful to Kennedy Catholic which have stayed with me since those days. One, Kennedy Catholic is the only institution I’ve been involved with that developed the entire person: intellect, spirit, and body. Two, I am thankful to Kennedy for an inspiring faculty. There were and are many great teachers at Kennedy Catholic. My freshman homeroom teacher and the head football coach was Lou Tice. He taught us to set goals, make those goals ambitious, and visualize the outcome.

Be true to who I am as a person. Be true to never quitting.”

Be true to my faith.

Dave Anderson ‘71

Three, the greatest thing I got from Kennedy happened on April 12, 1971, less than two months before graduation; meeting this really fine girl in my class that somehow I had missed for four years. Sherri Pfeifer accepted my invitation to senior prom... she married me 41 years ago next month. I thank Kennedy Catholic for this greatest gift.”

The depth of what I learned at Kennedy Catholic was:

honored posthumously with the Alumni Service Above Self Award Sergeant First Class Steven Langmack served in the United States Army after graduation. He served during the first Gulf War and in Haiti, before being selected as a member of the U.S. Special Forces. After returning from Desert Storm, he was married to his wife Rachaelle and they had two sons, Sam and Carson. Family members include mom and dad, Louise and Paul, and brothers David and Kevin and many other loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Steven was a brave soldier, devoted husband and loving father. During a combat operation in Iraq in 2005, SFC Langmack braved machine gun fire to allow his team to maneuver on the target, which ultimately cost him his life. On July 12, 2012, he was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame for his valorous and meritorious service throughout his career. As a student at Kennedy Catholic High School, he played baseball, and was known as a wonderful friend with a big heart and an infectious smile. With a reputation for being perpetually late, he was voted Most Likely to be Late for Graduation. He was dedicated, respectful, and always willing to help a friend in need. SFC Langmack summed up his time here perfectly with his memory in his senior yearbook: “My achievements are all of my friends.”

“Our time at Kennedy was filled with great memories. Steve’s friends were everything to him. He thrived on the comradery. He excelled in the military. He was an amazing soldier but he was also a great father, husband, son, and brother—he was everything to a lot of people. He was very deserving of this award.”

Mike Utley ‘84

honored with the Alumni Service Above Self Award In October of this year, Lancer students Nick Foseid and Hannah Dahleen were honored to be invited to Wenatchee, Washington, to meet Mike and his wife, Dani Utley. They had the unique opportunity to ask Mike questions about his high school, college and later pro-football experiences. In addition, he shared details about the Mike Utley Foundation. Mike played four years on Washington State University’s offensive line and three years on the offensive line for the Detroit Lions and was recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Visit our website to see the interview with Mike Utley.

“Mike is a true example of perseverance, a true example of a person who never quits and a true example of a positive attitude and we owe a lot of that to Kennedy Catholic and the foundation we learned as kids.”

honored with the Outstanding Young Alumni Award Darian is described by his high school coaches as a “talented super athlete.” In high school, Darian possessed confidence and swagger, but never acted like he was better than anyone else. He played varsity football, basketball, and ran track and field. Remembered as being a pleasure to coach, Darian also excelled in the classroom. His teachers describe him as smart, teachable, and reliable. Although an accomplished athlete, Darian was a standout off the field too; his peers elected him as Homecoming Prince and “Most Athletic” his senior year. After graduating in 2011, he attended Stanford University. He currently holds the Stanford triple jump record for both indoors and outdoors and was a four-time All American. Today, Darian is working for Rainier Scholars. Rainier Scholars cultivates the academic potential and leadership skills of hardworking, low-income students of color. By creating access to transformative educational opportunities and providing comprehensive support to scholars and families, they increase college graduation rates and empower new generations of leaders. Darian is sure to be an amazing role model for the young students he mentors through the program.

“I loved my time at Kennedy Catholic. Coming from a public school and non-religious background, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Catholic school. However, I quickly learned what the Lancer Family is all about. The relationships I have with fellow alumni and staff members continue to be a huge part of my life. Mr. Vinson taught me not only various writing skills, but to be confident in my abilities and to never give up or try to escape a difficult task.”

honored with the Outstanding Young Alumni Award Jessica, born in Moramanga, Madagascar, was part of Kennedy Catholic’s International Program. Each academic year, the International Program at Kennedy Catholic provides international students with the opportunity to become part of the Lancer family. The program will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next year. While a Lancer, Jessica was a stellar student and highly involved in school activities, clubs, and athletics. She receives high praise from her former teachers. One noted that Jessica was “receptive to growth and always focused on becoming a better version of herself.” Another former teacher remembers that “Jessica’s strength and raising of standards found itself etched in one amazing word: perseverance. She was a responsible and dedicated scholar who used intellect and creativity to communicate and accomplish her goals.” Jessica’s senior quote in the yearbook was “Education is our passport to the future.” Jessica received her diploma from Kennedy Catholic in 2013 and went on to graduate from Whitworth University in three years.

“I was recently asked, how do you know if you’ve reached success? That brought me back to SEARCH retreat, an event that changed my life. To me, success is doing God’s work. Whatever He has for me, I will do it.”

honored with the Lancer for Life Award Vinnie is a life-long West Seattleite, having grown up in West Seattle attending Holy Rosary School and parish. As a high school student at Kennedy Catholic, Vinnie was an outstanding athlete, a fun-loving, loyal friend, with a great sense of humor. He was the captain of the wrestling team and his varsity team were Sub-Regional finalists. Like many others, Vinnie’s wife was also a Lancer. Mary Kay Dooley was a member of the Class of 1980. Lancer for Life couldn’t be a more fitting description for Vinnie. Children Danielle and Vinnie are both Lancer graduates and Vinnie has spent countless hours supporting the school through his volunteer efforts. Vinnie has served as Booster Club President for almost 6 years, always with the purpose of supporting and serving the students, teachers, staff and parents of the Lancer Family. As a member of the School Advisory Board, he works to promote the school and support the Lancer community. Vinnie is a team-player with the gift and ability to bring people together with a common goal: being an example of what it means to be a Lancer for Life.

“I would like to thank the Kennedy Catholic family for being such a big part of my life. From the beginning Kennedy taught me the value of hard work, the importance of treating people how you want to be treated, the gift of lifelong friendships and is a home base that I am always happy to come back to.”

honored with the Alumni Visionary Award Tom is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at UC Berkeley. After graduating from Kennedy Catholic in 1989, he received his degree in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1993 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard in 1998. He has been a researcher at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and a professor at UC Berkeley since 1999. Tom has also participated on the UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program review and selection committee for many years. Tom attended St. Philomena elementary school where as a fourth grader he skipped to fifth grade based on his proficiency in math and science. A former classmate of his said “I knew at that time; he was going to be brilliant.” While attending Kennedy Catholic, he was very involved in the Speech and Debate team and was listed as one of the top four debaters on the team. He was voted by his senior class as “Most Intellectual” and had the nickname “Scantron.”

“Unlike most people who have pursued more practical professions, I actually continue to use the skills and specific facts I learned in my high school classes. The quadratic formula, diagrams of the logical structure of arguments and the capitalization rules in style manuals are all parts of my quotidian work. More deeply, some of the methods of inquiry and teaching practiced by my teachers at Kennedy inform my interactions with my own students. I owe many of my habits of mind, appreciation for mystery and recognition of the dignity and intrinsic value of people to my education at Kennedy. I am grateful for these blessings and for having the opportunity now to express this gratitude. Thank you for bestowing this honor. “

In his Senior Class Memories in the 1990 yearbook, Mateo lists his life ambition to be the “Donald Trump of tomorrow.” Perhaps his greatest accomplishment is his ongoing and active support of Seattle Children’s Hospital. His connection with the hospital began over 15 years ago when a coworker’s daughter passed away while at the hospital. Mateo composes and produces an annual benefit concert with The Symphony Guild to benefit Seattle Children’s, having written 18 symphonies. Mateo has raised over one million dollars for the hospital thus far. Kate McGovern ‘92 and Sandy Brown told us, “Mateo is passionate about life. His musical talent and excitement for his professional work and his commitment to Children’s Hospital are infectious. He lives large and loves big. It is an honor to know him.”

John M. Goodwin

honored with the Kennedy Catholic Cornerstone Award John left a lasting legacy at Kennedy Catholic. He was a charismatic, devoted and generous leader who carried a deep passion and commitment for Catholic education. It is the pioneers like John who laid the foundation for everything we do at the school today. With his insight and vision, John worked tirelessly in the early 70s to raise capital to initiate an endowment fund with the expressed aim of making a Catholic education accessible to all who wish to attend our school. After his death, a capital campaign bearing his name went on to generate what became the bulk of the endowment revenue. Annual earnings from a portion of the invested funds are used to support the school’s financial aid budget. John died leaving behind a legacy of love for Kennedy Catholic and of dedication to young people including the hundreds of students who had him as a teacher, coach and principal. We feel it only fitting to recognize this legacy in a larger way. Working with his family, Kennedy Catholic has established the John M. Goodwin Endowment. In partnership with the Goodwin family, Kennedy Catholic High School is honored to launch the Goodwin Scholar program. A Goodwin Scholar exemplifies the very definition of its namesake: leaders in the classroom and community, faithfilled servants, charismatic trail blazers with a deep passion for learning. The Goodwin Scholar is a well-rounded student who always seeks opportunities for growth whether that be in service, academics, faith, sport or the arts. They transcend classroom performance with diverse leadership styles and personal backgrounds. This scholarship will cover a portion of tuition for each of four years of study at Kennedy Catholic and will be awarded to an incoming freshman each year. The first recipient of this award will be a future Lancer from the Class of 2022. This couldn’t be more fitting. The Class of 2022 will graduate exactly 50 years after John was appointed principal of our school. John was a pioneering leader in his time and through this scholarship program he will continue to shape the future of Kennedy Catholic.

John Goodwin ’79 received the award on behalf of the family: “He had a way of making all of us want to be better and to do more.”

On behalf of Kennedy Catholic High School, we’d like to offer our heartfelt gratitude to all of our benefactors, volunteers, and friends without whose immense support this year of celebration would not have been possible. In addition, we’d like to thank the members of our 50th anniversary committee. Their hard work ensured a year filled with unforgettable moments. Ben and Virginia Cosgrove are lifelong champions of Catholic education and believe deeply in the philosophy

of Catholic schools. In a Catholic school, every student is made in the image and likeness of God and is treated in a sacred way, with love, compassion, mercy, and dignity. Catholic schools are filled with motivated, enthusiastic, and devoted students, teachers and administrators. They produce graduates who are civically engaged, tolerant of diverse views, lifelong learners and committed to service as adults. Ben and Virginia lived out this faith and commitment by sending their children to Kennedy Catholic and through their extensive involvement as volunteers and benefactors during the school’s formative years under the leadership of Principal John M. Goodwin. Ben, a longtime Boeing engineering leader and a major contributor to airplane safety, died in September 2006. His contributions to the knowledge of aging aircraft and the techniques to ensure their integrity were groundbreaking. Ben was known for his great love for his family, God, and the Blessed Mother. Virginia, a mother, housewife and teacher, has always been a strong advocate for education, especially those who needed extra help. She was a kindergarten teacher before having children and later in her life volunteered in the Highline School District’s Head Start program. She also worked as a substance abuse counselor for both the King County Courthouse and Schick Shadel Hospital. In the years following Ben’s death, Virginia and her family continue to be advocates of Catholic schools and remain dedicated to helping others in the community, especially Kennedy Catholic High School. We are particularly indebted to the family for making it possible over the years for many students to attend Kennedy Catholic for whom it would otherwise be impossible. Earlier this year, Virginia made a significant contribution to the John M. Goodwin endowment fund. Ben and Virginia were instrumental in supporting John’s vision for a strong and vibrant Kennedy Catholic, and the families became and remain good friends. “Ben was among a small group of dedicated Catholics that my dad could call upon at any time for wise counsel, moral and financial support. His keen intellect, wit and sense of humor proved indispensable to my dad over the years. They were kindred spirits,” remembers son John Goodwin ‘79. The Goodwin Scholar endowment aligns with the Cosgrove family legacy of supporting students who demonstrate financial need but also academic excellence, a commitment to service and leadership potential. The Cosgrove family welcomes this opportunity to recognize the legacy of Principal Goodwin while also highlighting the contributions of Ben and Virginia that impacted his and the school’s successes. Kennedy Catholic is grateful and honored to receive this thoughtful and inspired gift. If you would like to make a contribution to The John M. Goodwin Endowment to help us honor and secure his legacy and support the Goodwin Scholar program, please contact our Advancement Office or visit our website.

PH I LA N TH RO PY A SSEMBLY

On January 13 we were honored to welcome Mateo Messina ’90 and Lizanne Falsetto ’81 to the campus to share their stories, talk about life since graduating from Kennedy Catholic, and to hear about their personal experience with philanthropic work. Beyond being a successful businesswoman and mother of two, Lizanne is a passionate philanthropist. In 2014 and 2015, she hosted benefits for Whole Foods Market’s Whole Planet Foundation in support of micro-lending programs, assisting women out of poverty in 59 countries worldwide. An advocate and front runner of health and well-being through nutrition, she has raised money for The Dream Foundation and Women’s Cancer Research. Since the age of 24, Mateo has written, produced, and premiered 19 symphonies. Each premiere has been a benefit concert for kids, families, and research at Seattle Children’s Hospital. To date, he and his team have raised over $1,000,000 for Seattle Children’s. Both of these philanthropists spoke about how grateful they are to be able to share their talents and passions with others, and how their high school experiences at Kennedy Catholic helped open their hearts to the value of service. To this day, students at Kennedy Catholic are given many opportunities to learn how to lead a life of service for others. From service immersion trips to retreats, from ISLE projects to the community service courses, there is a multitude of ways for students to become more grounded in compassion for others and to grow as individuals who live out the values of the Catholic Social Teachings. We encourage our students to believe in their ability to make a difference in the world.

Now it’s time to stand and make the walk to the stage, walk proudly to the handshake of congratulations and best wishes, a look of thanks and nod of approval. Down the stairs and back to your seat you go to sounds of clapping and cheers. Awaiting you are the next steps of your life journey, be it college or another quest you choose. You’re excited, a bit nervous, maybe unsure and even sad. It’s natural, as you’re soon to leave the security and comfort of your Kennedy Catholic family and your own family. Recall for a moment your first days as a Lancer and how it felt to be a part of something so new. You quickly realized you’re a part of something wonderful, surrounded by people who care about you and help you arrive at today. Kindness, courage, faith, focus and so much more tucked into your portrait of values that will forever sustain you and guide you along the way. As years go by your time here will take on even stronger meaning as you realize it is what you learned and were part of that prepared you for the path you will travel. Whatever that may be keep your eyes on the horizon as you will make this a better world because of who you are, what you stand for and what you learned within these walls from your teachers and each other. Go forward and shine and don’t forget from time to time to look back on what you experienced here at Kennedy Catholic. Bless you all, may God be always at your side and live within your heart in all you do.

The 2016-2017 school year was a year of change

in the Athletics Department including new leadership, eight new coaches, a new league and classification, and a new sport just to name a few. These changes brought along a year of excitement while invigorating current student-athletes, families, and alumni.

Among the Highlights: • Sam Reed Named as Athletic Director Hired last July from his position as the District Athletic Director for Tacoma Public Schools, Sam immediately immersed himself in the Lancer community and has quickly built strong relationships. Among his opening initiatives were the creation of his Captains Council leadership program and the debut of his Lancer Athlete of the Week online poll. • New Head Coaches Fresh leadership roamed the sidelines throughout our three sports seasons. The Kennedy Catholic athletic community is pleased to welcome the following head coaches: Sheldon Cross Football Mark Davis & Gina Martin Cross Country Kevin Jackson Track & Field Eric Kress Boys and Girls Swimming Vincent McCluskey Boys Soccer Viet Tran Boys and Girls Tennis Steve Woodcock Girls Bowling • Debut of 4A North Puget Sound League Action With our affiliation with the former Seamount League coming to a close, 2016-2017 saw the Lancers opt to play in the WIAA’s highest classification and join the new North Puget Sound League. Playing in the league’s Cascade division, the Lancers matched up against Kentridge, Kentlake, Kentwood, Kent Meridian, Hazen, Mt. Rainier and Tahoma.

The depth and strength of the league has bettered everyone with the league claiming more WIAA state championships through the fall and winter seasons than any other league in the state.

• Girls Bowling Added to Winter Sports Offerings Behind the interest of our student-athletes, the Lancers girls bowling program started this winter, returning to the lanes it once roamed as a club sport back in the 1990s. This new crop of bowlers participated in league play and even claimed a berth in the District tournament in their first season.

Top Teams: • Boys Basketball Coach Hoffman’s boys made their third consecutive trip to the state’s biggest stage, the Tacoma Dome, where the senior-heavy squad placed in the top eight. • Boys Swim A small but hungry group of swimmers surprised many by finishing 2nd in the West Central District tournament behind strong relays and a 200M district title from Ian Olufson. • Girls Soccer NPSL Coach of the Year, Michelle Beattie, saw her squad play close matches all year, going 6-1-7 in league play. That experience helped the girls win an overtime thriller in a 3-1 shootout victory over Olympia to advance to the WIAA state round of 16. • Girls Tennis Behind the steady play of juniors Lily Olson and Lauren Jergens, the Lancers won the Cascade Division title, Kennedy Catholic’s first league championship in the new NPSL.

Top Performers: • Lancer Athletics held three National Signing Day events to celebrate a number of outstanding student-athletes committing to play college athletics (others may have accepted offers post-printing). They include: Nick Blakley Helena Ducusin Jesus Garza-Garcia Trevor Hoffman Aimee Hudson Emilio Mancol Makenzie Milton Ian Olufson Grayson O’Neil Keannu Royster Darien Sleeper Jared Thurber

Thurber caught seven passes for a whopping 253 yards and three touchdowns. Nick Feighner, golf (week seven). Feighner set a school record by firing a 5-under-par round of 31 at Druids Glen golf course. Marissa Tweedy, track & field (week 28). Tweedy earned personal bests in both the 1600M and 3200M runs in winning both races at the season-opening meet. Bowen McConville, track & field (week 36). McConville’s javelin throw of 170’ bested his PR by nearly 24’ in securing 4th in the NPSL championships.

As we wrap up another incredible academic year,

our campus and the Lancer Family feel more vibrant than ever. We have had an outstanding year and we are so proud of all of the academic and extracurricular accomplishments of our students. We have had many successes and reasons to celebrate. This year we introduced two community partnerships. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nationally recognized program used by schools to improve academic preparation and performance for all students, especially those underrepresented in higher education institutions. The AVID course will continue to be available to incoming Freshmen and current Sophomores. The program will be expanded to Juniors next school year. TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) is a Microsoft YouthSpark program that helps high schools grow a computer science program by integrating professional software engineers into the classroom in a co-teaching model (tealsk12.org). We will continue as a partner school and will offer the Introduction to Computer Science course next year. During the 2016-2017 school year we introduced several new courses of study: Chinese/Mandarin 2, Percussion Ensemble, Chemistry Honors/UW110, and AP Physics. These new courses help us meet the academic needs and desires of our students. Every year we evaluate our course offerings to ensure we are responsive to the instructional goals of our students, as well as providing new opportunities for learning. New courses for the 2017-2018 school year will include Digital Arts, Advanced Digital Photography, Improvisation, Fundamentals of Technical Theater, Honors Paschal Mystery/Morality, AP Calculus BC, Chinese/Mandarin 3, Psychology of Performance and Sport and Introduction to Athletic Training. Congratulations and goodbye to our seniors as they complete their educational journey with us and move on to the rest of their lives. Good luck with all they do in the future. They have been well-prepared. We are excited for our incoming class of Freshmen and look forward to their arrival in August.

As a student at Kennedy Catholic, Eric enjoyed learning, and being challenged academically. He traveled from Mercer Island so he could attend a Catholic high school, and understood the sacrifices his parents made for it to be possible. He remembers the push to live up to expectations set by the teachers in his classes and those high expectations motivated him. Along with his desire to succeed academically, Eric was actively involved socially and with campus life. He was a force for change among his classmates as Senior Class President and in no place was this more clear than Campus Ministry. Determined to help the office succeed, he rallied the support of his classmates. During Lent, he encouraged his fellow students to donate to the rice bowl collection, easily helping the school boost donations to 50 times that of previous contributions. One of the very first student leaders of the SEARCH retreat, Eric saw the importance of having his faith life integrated within his educational experience.

Walking through the halls

of Kennedy Catholic, Eric Schuck ‘80 points out his homeroom classroom and the hallway that housed his locker. He notes the changes to the building, including new paint, the student-centered library, and the updated science labs. He also points out the things that haven’t changed at all, most notably the Lancer spirit.

After graduating from Kennedy Catholic, Eric studied finance at Santa Clara University before finding his first job with Arrow Electronics. It was through a friend who worked in the Career Development and Placement Office at Santa Clara that he was given the opportunity to be introduced to Arrow Electronics, which was developing a pilot for a college apprenticeship program. After being selected to join that new program, Eric continued to grow his leadership skills and held numerous positions throughout his career there, including two positions based in Germany and finally, holding the title of company President. Eric is a gifted leader and manager and said his leadership style is guided by two main principles; do what you say you’re going to do, and follow the Golden Rule, “Do to others what you want them to do to you.” He strongly believes in using compassion in the workplace and made career decisions based on the environment he would be working in, and chose to hold positions that allowed his personal values and beliefs to come through. Now retired, he plans to take life as it comes and focus on volunteering, family and fitness. A dedicated runner, Eric has completed over 20 marathons, but has recently been spending more time cycling, including century rides of 100 miles or more. He’ll also spend time with his wife, Laura, and the three children they’ve raised together, Riley, Kiki and Casey.

After learning Eric was one of the first student leaders of SEARCH, we asked if he would write a personal reflection we could share with future SEARCHers. He was eager to share how his retreat experience made a difference in his life:

Dear Fellow Lancer, Congratulations on making the commitment to join your classmates for this SEARCH retreat. In this 50th anniversary year of Kennedy Catholic, I’m praying that this retreat has personal and spiritual value for you as you continue your journey at Kennedy and beyond. During my senior year thirty-seven years ago (yikes, that’s a long time!), a classmate and I were given the opportunity to plan and facilitate Kennedy’s very first SEARCH retreat. Looking back after so many years, it was an integral part of my experience and made meaningful contributions to my own personal development. After three years at Kennedy Catholic, our individual identities were oftentimes overshadowed by our well-established groups—“I’m an athlete,” “I play in the band,” The Schuck family: Eric, Laura, Kiki, Casey, and Riley “I’m a member of the honor society,” “I’m in theater arts,” etc. In many ways, these labels led to stereotypes and misconceptions that served to divide rather than unify us as a class. For me, the SEARCH retreat stripped away these labels and opened my eyes to truly appreciate the many things we shared in common: love of God, family, and community.Looking back, it was also a time when I was questioning the importance of Mass attendance in my life. While I was comfortable with my own personal beliefs, it was becoming easier to let Mass attendance slip down the list of my weekend priorities. I knew in a few short months I would be heading off to college where this would become an even bigger question for me. During my SEARCH experience, I not only realized the importance of continuing to work on my own personal faith, but also the amazing power of participating in the celebration of the Eucharist within a community of believers—in this case, my fellow classmates. Throughout my adult life, as a member of a number of different parishes, I have been reminded of this many times! Each of you is special and offers unique gifts to each other, your families, friends, and communities. I hope and pray that during this SEARCH retreat the Holy Spirit opens yours eyes to new experiences and wisdom that will strengthen and shape your faith for years to come. As you continue your journey, remember that your life is God’s gift to you, what you do with it is your gift back to God! Eric Schuck

What were you most involved with during your time at Kennedy Catholic? This year I am an ASB Staff Director so I work alongside officers to coordinate and organize events for the student body. I am also the Vice President of the St. Vincent de Paul club which I have been in since sophomore year. I have been in Human Relations and Lady Lancers for two years and have been in the National Honor Society for three years. I have been in the Spanish Honor Society for four years and was the President my junior year. I have been a Lancers Against Cancer leader and a Link Crew leader for two years. I was a part of the Sophomore Squad before being a Freshman Retreat Leader my junior and senior years. I was a team leader for Spring SEARCH and a primary leader for Fall SEARCH. Which schools did you apply to and where are you planning to attend? I applied to University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia, University of Washington, Gonzaga University and Villanova University. I will be attending the Gonzaga University nursing program which is my intended major along with a Spanish minor. I was awarded the Trustee Scholarship for four years. Describe the goals you have for yourself after graduation. After graduation I plan to study to become a nurse practitioner with a focus in pediatric oncology. I also hope to study abroad at some point in college and obtain a Spanish minor. Highlight some of your most valued high school achievements and/or memories: Being a main leader for Fall SEARCH this year was a huge honor and by far my favorite memory of high school because I was able to work with an incredible team of student leaders to inspire and guide the SEARCHers on their journeys. Do you have a teacher who inspired you? Mrs. VanderPlas was my English teacher sophomore year and her enthusiasm and authenticity has inspired me so much throughout high school. She has always supported me and been a constant source of good advice, witty jokes, and travel tips. When you think of Kennedy Catholic, what comes to mind? Kennedy Catholic is like a second home to me. I have grown up in the community and think of the people as my family. Please share with us your family history with both Catholic education and Kennedy Catholic: I grew up Catholic and attended Sacred Heart School before coming to Kennedy Catholic. My brother, dad, uncle, and cousins also attended Kennedy Catholic. My dad coached Lancer football for over 25 years and has coached baseball for many years. I have grown up going to games and will always be a Lancer.

Danielle Peretti ‘17 3.97 GPA

After Rico Peretti ‘80 joined the Lancer football coaching staff in the mid 90s, little did we know at the time the many ways he would impact the school for the next 20 years and counting. He is well known as the banquet chef; cooking and serving his famous Peretti Spaghetti at countless banquets over the years including football teams, boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, wrestling and baseball. Rico has been an assistant baseball coach for over ten years and for the past three years served as the official scorekeeper for the boys’ basketball team. During the rainy springs of baseball season it is not uncommon to see Rico siphoning water off the baseball field with a shop-vac so kids can play their games. He has a huge heart and is always willing to help in any capacity. Dawn Peretti is a stellar Lancer supporter in every way. She can be seen snapping countless photos at all Lancer events and partners with Rico in helping with banquets and other myriad school functions. Rico and Dawn sent two children to Kennedy Catholic. Dominic graduated in 2013 and currently attends the University of Washington and Danielle will graduate this year. Dominic and Danielle are first-rate examples of what it means to be part of the Lancer family—living with concern and care towards classmates, friends, faculty and staff, parents and family. They are thoughtful and giving and not presumptuous toward impressing others. It runs in the family! The entire Lancer family helped Rico beat cancer a few years ago, all while Rico still made every effort to attend every Kennedy Catholic event he could. Rico and Dawn are friends with a lengthy list of Lancer families and their children will surely carry on the tradition. They are truly Lancers for Life.

The entire Peretti family has given so much to Kennedy Catholic over the years. They are an inspiration. For many years Rico has been an excellent example of what a Lancer is. Through his coaching and volunteer work he has given motivation, knowledge, and shown our athletes the value of perseverance throughout his battle with cancer while still coaching our baseball team. Dawn has been a constant at all games taking photographs, supporting, and helping out behind the scenes at so many events from team banquets, to Alumni events, and school dances. Dominic and Danielle have contributed as school leaders and excellent students during their time here. This family has definitely been a blessing to the Lancer community, and we thank them for making Kennedy Catholic the place, the school, the family that it is.” Dino Josie ‘82

My wife, Kim, and I consider Rico, Dawn, Dominic, and Danielle an extension of our family as our kids have grown up together both in and out of the Lancer family. They are truly friends for life!” Don Hoffman ‘83

The Peretti family is the definition of the Lancer Family for me. Danielle is a selfless and professional student. Rico lives to support the student athletes. Dawn and Dominic ‘13 are a constant presence at baseball games. Lancer pride!” Dale Dolejsi

I’ve had the pleasure of watching the Peretti kids grow up at Kennedy Catholic. Danielle has been an invaluable member of the ASB Staff. She is the driving force in making sure that everything we do gets accomplished efficiently.

At the Open House every year, Dawn and Rico will stop by my office to show me the detailed list that Danielle has left for them about which classes to visit and how to behave in each classroom. This is one of my highlights of that night. I will miss having them stop by!” Katie Burns ‘90

WELCO ME TO TH E CLA SS O F 202 1 !

Each year in March, Registration Day gives our incoming freshmen the opportunity to come to Kennedy Catholic and select the classes that will kick off their high school career. It is an exciting time for these new Lancers as they work with counselors to set the stage for their next four years. Discussions of core classes and electives take place at these meetings and counselors make sure the choices the students make will help them to reach their highest potential by the time they graduate. During this time, faculty and staff were able to catch a glimpse of the amazing talents, gifts and personalities this group of new students and their families will bring to strengthen the Kennedy Catholic community. Their energy level was infectious and the excitement they expressed at meeting their classmates or picking out some new Lancer gear at the Knight Stand was a joy to witness. Our new scholars are ready to fully embrace what it means to be a Lancer for Life!

Please join us in welcoming the Class of 2021 into the Lancer Family! Save the Date: Fall Open House Wednesday, November 1, 2017

DE RE K R. OR OZ C O ME MOR IAL GOLF T OU RN A MEN T A N D SCH O LA RSH I P

Derek R. Orozco graduated from Kennedy Catholic in 1987. As a Lancer, he was a four-year student athlete, playing football and baseball. Not only was Derek a talented athlete, but he excelled in academics. He went on to became a Husky at the University of Washington and after graduating, received an MBA from Seattle University. Derek worked at the Boeing Company. He was able to apply the discipline and leadership skills he learned from athletics into the workplace. He is remembered for his quiet and friendly demeanor, personal generosity and love for his family. Friends describe Derek as having a gift for making others feel important and valued. He was a gentle soul, humble and kind with an incredible attention for detail. After Derek unexpectedly passed away in 2016, his devoted friends and family established the Derek R. Orozco Foundation, a charitable organization, with the mission of supporting three things Derek loved: athletics, academics, and music. In addition, Derek loved Kennedy Catholic. This last September, the DRO Foundation hosted the inaugural Derek R. Orozco Memorial Golf Tournament. Friends, family and community members came together to honor Derek with a hugely successful event. On a Friday afternoon in January, several members of the DRO Foundation Board, along with Hilda and Denny Orozco, shared an amazing gift with Kennedy Catholic. They presented a check to the school in the amount of $10,000 to be used to establish the Derek R. Orozco Memorial Scholarship Fund. Future proceeds from the golf tournament with be used to endow the scholarship. On May 9, the first Derek R. Orozco Memorial Scholars were named and with thanks to the DRO Foundation, future scholars will follow. Kennedy Catholic is proud to partner with the DRO Foundation to support the second annual golf tournament. Registration is now open on our website at kennedyhs.org/DRO. This year, the tournament coincides with what would have been Derek’s 30th high school reunion. If you would like to support the Derek R. Orozco scholarship, join us for this incredible day of golf, friendly competition, and celebration of Derek. All proceeds benefit the DRO Foundation. Not a golfer but still want to support this scholarship? Donate directly to the scholarship fund on our website. Select the Derek R. Orozco Memorial Scholarship fund in the donation designation menu. “The Derek R. Orozco Foundation was established to honor the things that were important to Derek. He understood how special this school is and the opportunities it has created for so many students over the years. He was very proud to be a Lancer, he was proud of the school and the people associated with it.” Todd Takayoshi ’87 on behalf of the Derek R. Orozco Foundation Board

During the month of March, the Counseling Department enthusiastically hosted two Career Day panels intended to connect our students to a variety of different career paths. Career panelists shared information about their jobs and how students can start preparing now for the career of their dreams. The panelists were comprised of current and former Kennedy Catholic parents, alumni, and friends of our school who volunteered to share their experiences with our students. Our first set of panelists spoke about different career paths including corporate positions at Starbucks, Alaska Airlines, and Arrow Electronics as well as what it’s like to be an entrepreneur in a tech start-up, work as CEO of a large organic seed company and opportunities in the manufacturing, plumbing and pipe-fitting industry. Our second day included panelists from fashion design to sports marketing, from forensic psychology to teaching, from law to public service. These amazing professionals spoke to our students about why they chose their careers, what past experiences helped them get to where they are today and what students can do to prepare if they are interested in a similar career path. Leading up to the Career Day speaker panels, students sampled a variety of career exploration resources and activities. At each grade level, students are introduced to assessments and surveys through the Naviance program, a web-based resource designed for high schools to help connect students with college and career information. Depending on the grade level, students took the assessments such as the ‘Career Interest Profiler’ or ‘Strengths Explorer’ to better understand their own skills and interests as well as explore the variety of careers related to these interests. The Career Day panels were formed based on student interest culled from these surveys.

Students met in their Advisory classrooms to hear a brief overview of who would be speaking on the career panels and prepared questions relating to the different careers and businesses. Some example questions: What type of education or training was required? Does your job include travel? What does your average day look like in that field? Students also completed an activity about the qualities they would personally look for in a career path and discussed as a group the different traits to consider. After the speaker panels, students met back with their Advisory classrooms to debrief and talked specifically about professional etiquette, such as writing thank you notes to each speaker. Some students connected with their school counselors or talked directly with the panel speakers to continue the conversation and learn more about how they can prepare for that career path and/or complete summer work or internships in the field. We are excited to continually grow this program to utilize more speakers, careers, and provide hands-on opportunities for students to gain real-life career experiences.

Third Annual Red, White & Blue Easter Egg Hunt Over 1,000 red, white and blue Easter eggs were scattered throughout the Kennedy Catholic library this year, just waiting to be found! Over 100 kids came through to find the hidden treasures. Thank you to all the families who joined us for this annual event!

Little Lancer Trick-or-Treating Staff and faculty embrace the Halloween spirit at Kennedy Catholic each year, opening their classrooms to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters from our local community and alumni network. Families are welcomed into the Dillman Center for treats, activities and fun. Special thanks to the Science Club for organizing and hosting several of these activities, including creating dry ice bubbles and stretchy slime!

OUR 50TH A N N I V ERSA RY MEMO RI ES

Thank you

to the hundreds of alumni, families, and friends who participated in our many special events during the 50th anniversary of Kennedy Catholic. From sports, to service, to spiritual growth, Lancers made memories, rekindled life-long friendships, and celebrated 50 years of excellence together.

And finally, students, staff and alumni closed the anniversary year during Catholic Schools Week in January with a very successful cereal drive. Collecting over 500 pounds of cereal, Lancers provided over 5,000 breakfast meals to seniors in need in our community. This incredible support of those less fortunate truly demonstrates our 50 year tradition of service.

On a sunny July afternoon, Lancers from all decades filled the stands at SAFECO Field to cheer on the home team at Lancer Day at the Mariners. The highlight was not the final score (the Ms lost!), but the roar of applause and sense of pride when the 50th Anniversary message appeared on the big screen.

We look forward to sharing the next 50 years and creating new memories and traditions with each of you!

In late August, a hearty group of dedicated alumni, parents and students gathered on the football field before sunrise to race their hearts out in the Lancer Loop 5k. Some runners celebrated a new PR, while others enjoyed a leisurely walk with former classmates, but everyone crossed the finish line to applause of fans and the cheer squad! We welcomed in the Advent season with a memorable twilight retreat and Mass with Fr. Bryan Dolejsi in the chapel. Guests shared a light meal together before a moving Advent presentation honoring 50 years of faith tradition at Kennedy Catholic.

RETI RED FA CU LTY PRO FI LE

JoAnne Ludwig was a longtime dedicated

member of the faculty and staff of Kennedy Catholic High School. She served our school and community for over 42 years, retiring in 2016. During her time at the school, she was known as a funny, lovable, and approachable teacher and VP/Academic Dean with a bubbly personality and was tireless in her involvement. She was instrumental in helping the school research and plan for our 50th anniversary celebration. She meticulously recorded events and donated several scrapbooks to the school for our archives. These are priceless mementos of our history. In addition to her activities at the school, Seafair has been a part of JoAnne’s life for as long as she can remember. Her parents were actively involved in Seafair festivities and JoAnne grew up in West Seattle on a street filled with Seafair volunteers including a Commodore who introduced her to Seafair royalty. One of her earliest memories is of encountering the Seafair Pirates while out to dinner with her parents. Let’s just say they left a lasting impression! Surrounded by other volunteers and witnessing the excitement and joy of Seafair instilled a passion and understanding of volunteerism in JoAnne. She became more actively involved as a Seafair volunteer in 1989 and in 1994, she was asked to be the Chair of the Seafair Scholarship Program for Women. She has served in this role ever since. She works with a committee to orchestrate the program, including working with the Seafair participants supervising the technical aspects of the program and assisting Miss Seafair throughout her year of service. JoAnne accompanies Miss Seafair to nearly all of her events and helps prepare her for appearances. She commits hundreds of volunteer hours every year. JoAnne speaks lovingly of her involvement with Seafair. “I truly love Seafair and the wonderful ‘family’ I’ve acquired. I’ve had the great honor of associating with many local and national personalities.” Indeed, JoAnne’s love of Seafair was contagious at Kennedy Catholic. She recruited many committee members over her years at the school. JoAnne stays connected to that family and keeps in touch with participants and former Miss Seafairs. JoAnne can’t imagine a summer without Seafair, the two go hand-in-hand. At Kennedy Catholic, we are proud to call JoAnne a member of the Lancer Family and hope others will be motivated to consider volunteer work after reading JoAnne’s story and the value it brought to her life.

FA REW ELL

Farewell The Kennedy Catholic staff would like to thank an outstanding group of mentors and professionals who are leaving us this year. We will miss their expertise, insights, and friendship. Save the Date Derek Orozco was a beloved member of the Lancer Class of 1987. After Derek unexpectedly passed away in 2016, his devoted friends and family established The Derek R. Orozco Foundation. Earlier this year, the Foundation presented the first donation to Kennedy Catholic to establish the scholarship fund carrying his name with proceeds from the inaugural Derek Orozco Memorial Golf Tournament. We are most grateful for this incredible gift and to partner with the foundation to honor Derek’s legacy. The Second Annual Derek Orozco Memorial Golf Tournament is Sunday, July 30 at 1:30pm at the Auburn Municipal Golf Course. Tickets are available online at www.kennedyhs.org/DRO. $500 per Foursome, $125 per Individual For additional information on any of the events listed here, please contact Rebecca Nuffer, Alumni Relations Manager, at nufferr@kennedyhs.org.

30 Years in the Making Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s future. And we are all mortal. John F. Kennedy Kennedy Catholic has long been known for embracing diversity so it will come as no surprise that we have the oldest and largest International Program on the west coast. The Program is home to students from eight different countries, each student adding their gifts and talents to the cultural fabric of our community. Our International Admissions team is dedicated to building relationships that enrich every member of the Lancer family. As Director of International Admissions, Annette Griffith makes sure each and every applicant receives a personal Skype interview. During the interview, she is able to begin the important task of building a personal relationship. Using technology ensures applicants not only find our admissions process seamless and easy to navigate, but also allows the team to gather more personal information about our applicants like hobbies, class preferences, community service experience, and a parent statement. Throughout the admissions process, organization is also key to their success. Admissions Assistant, Liz Smith, facilitates key communications and keeps the team updated on applicants. International Program Director, Teri Crosswhite, helps families navigate the homestay process. It’s certainly not easy to leave family behind and face a new culture and all-new experiences, including new living arrangements. Teri helps our international students adapt to their new home, get involved, meet new friends, and encourages them to take part in activities. She is there to talk whenever she is needed. Once a month, Fil Tribble plans an excursion for students to attend and to engage with other community members. As a former summer camp counselor, Fil has an infectious personality and positive attitude and is perfect for this job. In addition to local excursions, service opportunities have also been popular. These exchanges have given international and domestic students special and unique opportunities to learn more about each other. All of this wouldn’t come without the support of administration. Kennedy Catholic President, Mike Prato, is a strong supporter of the International Program and has traveled to China, Korea, and Vietnam to promote the program and meet with families. It is through these experiences that he has come to build deep and lasting friendships with a number of international families. It helped him realize that moms and dads the world over have the same hopes and dreams for their children; a safe, healthy, happy educational experience. For almost 30 years our International Program has been delivering on the promise to broaden the opportunity for cultural exchange while ensuring Kennedy Catholic continues its mission to graduate leaders following Christ in a school community that is accessible, diverse, and committed to pursuing the fullest potential of every student. To learn more about our International Program, please visit our website or contact our Director of International Admissions, Annette Griffith, at griffitha@kennedyhs.org.
