1966 - 2016

Q & A with President Mike Prato Q: What has been your biggest challenge as Principal and now President? My entire life was spent teaching and coaching. Seventeen years as a classroom teacher and coach left me with a lifetime of valued relationships. Leaving the comfort of those personal relationships for administration was like mourning the loss of a best friend. As President, the very thing I love is the very thing that is less present in my daily activities: teachers and kids. Now, I actively pursue spending time with teachers and students. I purposefully schedule time in classrooms and try to visit the cafeteria several times a week. As often as I can, I attend school concerts, assemblies and athletic contests so I can be present to our students and families. This brings me joy and fills my spirit. Q: Why did the school name change to John F. Kennedy Catholic High School? There are several equally compelling reasons. First and foremost, the change allowed us to leverage our market share positioning our Catholic identity in the forefront. In 1966 when our doors opened, the Catholic mission of our school was clear to the surrounding community, but as time passed and the community grew and changed, it became clear a potential name change would help reinforce our mission. In addition, while building partnerships with the City of Burien, we were surprised to learn that many in our community were not aware a Catholic school was present in their municipality. This helped us see we needed to work on branding our Catholicity within our market. Finally, feedback from our 2005 accreditation suggested we consider a name change. After a series of focus groups engaging our alumni and friends, current student body, current parents and current faculty members, the new school name was presented to Archbishop Brunett, who then allowed for the name to be officially changed. Q: How do you maintain a spiritual focus amidst construction, fundraising, cabinet meetings, events, luncheons and the exciting changes that Kennedy Catholic is enjoying? Very early each morning, my personal prayer time in the chapel has become a priority; seeking God’s will while maintaining a focus on the apostolate of this amazing school. In addition to my spiritual focus, key alumni and past administrators call frequently to offer feedback, support and advice when needed. This is truly inspiring and helps guide my daily work.

For 50 years, Kennedy Catholic has educated over 9,000 Lancers.

As a member of the Lancer Family, you know that Kennedy Catholic is not just a school, but a place that offers a transformative experience for every Lancer. This next year, we will continue to be led, first and foremost, by our faith while living the mission of graduating leaders following Christ in a school community that is accessible, diverse and committed to pursuing the fullest potential of every student. At the KATCH Auction gala on April 23, I was honored to toast to the beginning of our 50th year kickoff: Celebrating our past to inspire our future. This is the start of a new era. We will launch our new web site this fall, new and improved directional signage will be installed on the exterior and interior of our campus, our students will return to study in a brand-new, modern, 21st-century library space, and the building will be wired to support our future technology needs. Our growing and vibrant community deserves our investment in Kennedy Catholic’s next 50+ years. It is our goal to ensure we continue to innovate, influence, and inspire. The Kennedy Catholic team of faculty, administrators, and volunteers are all committed to an unwavering focus on reaching our goals. We ignite passion, curiosity, and creativity in each student. We are graduating seniors who model compassion, generosity, and kindness, ready to take on the world. It is through the hard work, dedication, and generosity of each and every student, parent, past parent, alumni, volunteer, current and former faculty member, friend, community member, and supporter of this great school that we are here today. Each of you are the cloud of witnesses, words that Scripture uses to define our cheering squad in heaven, urging us on to live and celebrate a full life in Christ. As we usher in our 50th year, remember those who have gone before you and those who had a lasting spiritual impact in your life. Hold those memories close to you; moments of grace that remind us that we are not alone in our struggles. He is with us.

I am thankful to our past and excited for our future. Go Lancers!

Dear Kennedy Catholic High School Bus Drivers, On behalf of the students, parents, and staff, thank you for your service to our school. We wish to extend to you our deepest gratitude for the vital role that you play and the fine work that you do in your job as a school bus operator for students at Kennedy Catholic. Each school year, hundreds of students who attend Kennedy Catholic rely on school bus transportation to and from school, to and from athletic events, practices and other school activities, to and from field trips and many, many other events. Throughout each school year, you travel thousands of miles, sometimes in adverse weather conditions and through unpredictable traffic, to deliver our students safely to our school and to their events. Your dedication, hard work, and vigilance are instrumental to the safe and efficient transportation of those who are most precious to us: the students entrusted to our care. Thank you for so generously sharing the spirit of your profession in a manner that touches the lives of so many.

Thank you for keeping us moving! The Students, Parents, and Staff of Kennedy Catholic

Kennedy Catholic students come from across the region attending our school from over 100 zip codes thanks to a fleet of school buses that cover over 300 miles of service area. This year, three of our long-time bus drivers will retire. Dean Etzkorn, Alyce Foster and Mike Salter leave behind a legacy of “going the extra mile for our students. Bus drivers often have long hours, waking early and staying late. Each of these drivers brought a unique and special passion to their jobs. We are so grateful for their many years of dedicated service to the school and wish them the very best in their retirement.

I am honored to collaborate in authoring our 50th Anniversary prayer. It is the deep commitment of many that sustains Kennedy Catholic as an Archdiocese of Seattle high school that continues to serve our community today.

In Catholic schools the foundation of faith is established, forming the base of a commitment to life-long learning and growth in holiness. Kennedy Catholic provides students with opportunities to experience a relationship with God through Jesus Christ on a personal level and to encourage their active participation in the faith community of Kennedy Catholic. We work together with our students so they might experience faith not only through liturgy and other worship experiences, but also by creating an atmosphere where students encounter the Risen Christ in everyday activities. We are a family continually formed and transformed through God’s love. This transformation becomes the basis for all decisions we make and leads us to serve others. Good and Gracious God, Bless us as we celebrate this milestone of 50 years of service to our community. Thank you for our current students, parents, faculty and those who influenced the life and success of this school throughout our history. With gratitude for the past and with hope for the future, we rededicate ourselves to the education and inspiration of youth and all we have to the mission which God entrusts to us. Stay near us always and make us generous in the service of others. We are a joyful community brought together by God to be a holy fellowship: in learning, faith and leadership. May all who enter Kennedy Catholic be strengthened by Your grace.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Father Bryan Dolejsi CHAPLAIN

Kennedy Catholic Students Participate in the ® Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest After months of intensive research and success at regional- and affiliate-level competitions, current students Falisha Hola, Anna Hollister, Julia Wilson, and Rosario Tarabi will present their exhibit at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest, held at the University of Maryland, College Park Campus in the Washington, D.C. area, June 12-16. Each year, more than half a million students worldwide participate in the annual National History Day Contest. The program encourages students to conduct original historical research using both primary and secondary sources around an annual theme. The 2016 theme is Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History. After completing a project, students compete in a series of history contests beginning at the local level. The top students in all 50 states, D.C., and several U.S. territories and international schools are given the opportunity to present their projects at the National Contest. This year thousands of students from around the world will present their work to judges at the National Contest. “The work students put into these projects is astounding,” said NHD Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “To make it to the National Contest is an incredible accomplishment. Fewer than 1% of all projects make it to this level. It requires a superb level of research and critical thinking skills. I am confident we will continue to see great things from all of these students because the skills learned through competing in NHD help prepare students for success in college and career.”

From left to right: Julia Wilson, Anna Hollister, Falisha Hola, and Rosario Tarabi

More than 300 historians and education professionals evaluate the students’ work at the national competition. $150,000 worth of scholarships are awarded at the national awards ceremony and approximately 100 students take home cash prizes between $250 and $1,000 for superior work in a particular category of judging.

KATCH AUCTION

The very first KATCH auction was held in 1973 in the Spring. KATCH is the acronym for Kennedy Action Toward Christian Heritage. The auction plays a significant role in helping provide financial support for the school to ensure an education at Kennedy Catholic remains accessible, transformative, and equal to the challenges of our time. Many devoted friends and volunteers make the KATCH auction the signature fundraising event for the school. It is also a great opportunity to come together as a community, celebrate the Lancer family and simply enjoy an amazing PARTY! Thank you for helping us commemorate and honor our school and its contributions to Catholic education for the past 50 years.

A logo is a graphic mark, emblem, or symbol

commonly used by commercial enterprises, organizations and even individuals to aid and promote instant public recognition. Logos are either purely graphic JO DY HN NE (symbols/icons) or are composed of the name of the organization (a logotype F. K E N or wordmark). Just as a nation’s flag expresses the distinct identity of a country, so, too, a logo helps to establish the name and define the character of an organization. Effective logos become synonymous with the organizations they portray. They are instantly recognized by people, and help to identify and convey a message about the brand for which they stand. The Kennedy Catholic school logo is commonly referred to as the crest or seal, and the athletic logo as the Lancer. The most recent seal was designed in 2011 and the most recent Lancer was introduced in 2010.

During the 40th anniversary year festivities, this logo was introduced and marked the special occasion.

As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration, we introduced a 50th Anniversary logo, which was first published in the August, 2015 Lancer for Life Magazine and will be used throughout the coming year. The logo design is influenced by the 40th anniversary logo, the current seal and the original John F. Kennedy Memorial High School crest (seen below).

The History of our Logo We are also excited to offer a “throwback” version of the original crest, which is the earliest version of the school logo and was used prior to 2011. The 50th Anniversary logo, the “throwback” logo, the current school logo, and Lancer are all available on products which can be purchased at our on-line spirit store which can be found here: www.kennedyhs.org/50thanniversary. The 50th Anniversary logo and throwback logo will be offered for sale on merchandise for a limited time only.

We have completed another school year! This was an outstanding year and we are so proud of the academic and extracurricular accomplishments of our students. We had many reasons to celebrate and many successes of which to be proud. This year was the first full year of our technology education partnership with the Seattle App Academy. The Seattle App Academy provides computer science and programming classes for our students at their location in West Seattle. The program was a success and we look forward to its continued growth. We introduced several new courses of study: Chinese/Mandarin, Digital Photography/Art, Strength and Conditioning, Earth and Space Science, Active Chemistry, Mother Teresa Life Skills and Mother Teresa Professional Skills for the 21st Century. The new courses help us meet the academic needs and desires of our students. Every year we evaluate our course offerings to ensure we are responsive to the instructional goals of our students, while providing new opportunities for learning, New courses for the 2016-2017 school year include: Chinese/Mandarin 2, Percussion Ensemble, Chemistry Honors/UW110, and AP Physics. We are also excited to enter into two additional community partnerships for the upcoming year. Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) is a nationally recognized program used by schools to improve academic preparation and performance for all students, especially those underrepresented in higher education institutions. The AVID course is available to incoming Freshmen and Sophomores by school recommendation and placement. TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) is a Microsoft YouthSpark program that helps high schools grow a computer science program by integrating professional software engineers into the classroom in a co-teaching model (tealsk12.org). We have been accepted as a partner school and will implement an Introduction to Computer Science course in the fall. Congratulations and goodbye to our Class of 2016 as they complete their educational journey with us and move on to the rest of their lives! Good luck with all they do in the future! They have been well-prepared! We are excited for our incoming class of Freshmen and look forward to their arrival in August.

Charlie Beall

Kay Crane

by Jordan McPherson (‘16)

by Elizabeth Hughes (‘16)

Charlie arrived in the fall of 2005. He worked exclusively with the Mother Teresa program at Kennedy Catholic. He served as an assistant coach with the JV baseball team and helped the varsity team in the weight room. His favorite memories are of freshmen going through the Link Crew welcome gauntlet and seniors exiting through the faculty farewell gauntlet. He plans to road trip across North America with his dog during his retirement. He would like to be remembered for his passion for the Mother Teresa Program. I have fought the good fight I have finished the race I have kept the faith

Kay started teaching at Kennedy Catholic in 2000. She taught Latin 1 and served as the school librarian. Her goal as librarian was, “putting the book into the right hands.” She hopes people remember her desire to help students learn in the most effective way possible. She is a person with kind energy. She led the Knit Wits Club and helped in the drama department, on the ethics committee, and as a guest speaker discussing Judaism and banned books. When asked what she wants to do in her retirement she said she has no idea. The possibilities are endless.

Dave Danforth

by Albert Lorenzana (‘16)

Dave joined the faculty of Kennedy Catholic in 1977. Over his years of service he taught English, Tech Tools, and Film. His goal as a teacher was to make learning fun and is proud he helped create the Film Studies course at Kennedy Catholic. He coached track for 30 years. Mr. Danforth plans to spend his days fishing, traveling and sleeping in.

Madeline Etzkorn by Abby Hemmer (‘16)

Walt Kostecka

Madeline has worked at Kennedy Catholic since 1999 in the Business Office where she currently manages payroll and all nontuition funds. When asked how she would like to be remembered, she laughed and said, “I would like to be remembered as helpful, considerate and friendly.” She intends to spend time with her eight grandchildren after she retires.

Walt served Kennedy Catholic as teacher and coach since 1976. Well-known for his profound loyalty to the school, he coached the wrestling team for many years. He enjoyed his time coaching because it gave him a chance to connect on a deeper level with students. “You only get the students for a limited time [but with sports] you spend more time and get to know them better.” He would like to travel the world during his retirement; his first trip to a festival on the east coast with his wife. He plans to take up woodworking in a shed he built at his home and spend more time with his family.

JoAnne Ludwig by David vanTulder (‘16)

After 42 years at Kennedy Catholic, JoAnne has decided to enjoy a well-earned retirement. She served the school as the first female Academic Dean, Curriculum co-ordinator, World Language department chair, French teacher of all levels, Yearbook advisor, Cheer coach, Drill advisor, and Cross Country coach. Her students know her as a funny, lovable and approachable teacher with a very bubbly personality. Mrs. Ludwig is a beloved teacher and will be sorrowfully missed. Fortunately, her students know that they can always find her by turning on the TV and looking towards the stands during a Green Bay Packers game.

Mike Maggart

by Grant Gardner (‘16)

Mike joined the staff in 1993. His goal in serving students was to influence them to keep striving and never give up. He hopes students will remember him as someone who was on their side and always had faith in them. “My hope would be that I was a good example of the importance of faith in others as children of God.” He is looking forward to spending time with his wife of 45 years, his four sons and five grandchildren.

Jerry Seitz

by Carrie Wang (‘16)

Jerry joined the staff of Kennedy Catholic in 1971. He taught Algebra, Current Issues, Great Ideas, English and Latin. His goal as teacher was “to see the light of understanding go on.” When asked how he hopes people will remember him, he said: “understanding, academic, athletic, and fun.” Without hesitation he said “having helped students learn and become better citizens” has been his greatest accomplishment in life. In addition to teaching, Mr. Seitz served as Academic Dean for 28 years. Upon retirement, Mr. Seitz is ready to spend time with his grandchildren, read the books he hasn’t been able to read, and follow the careers of his former students.

Sue Strong

by Sophie Sands (‘17)

Sue joined our staff in the fall of 1998 working in the attendance office. She enjoyed the opportunity to build relationships with the parents and students and loved coaching drill and cheer and coordinating the Lady Lancers club. She would like to be remembered as kind and helpful. During her retirement she will be moving to Arizona and working to improve her golf game. She looks forward to spending more time with her grandchildren.

Mike Burris In Memoriam

It was with great sadness that we saw the passing of our longtime friend and colleague, Mike Burris. Those who taught with him recall his love of math, his Jesuit roots and his commitment to his family—most of all his wife, Suzanne.

“Our friend and Alma Mater…John F. Kennedy.” The Kennedy Catholic staff would like to thank this outstanding group of mentors and professionals for the years of dedication. They have tirelessly been the foundation of the esprit de corps that makes our building invaluable and we will miss their expertise, insights, and recommendations. Blessings and our gratitude to: Joanne Ludwig, Mike Maggart, Walt Kostecka, Madeline Etzkorn, Dave Danforth, Charlie Beall, Kay Crane, Jerry Seitz, and Sue Strong. We look forward to hearing of your travels and know that you always have a place here at Kennedy Catholic. The above dedications for each retiree were written by Kennedy Catholic students. The student authors are recognized below each person’s name.

25 years ago, Greg Conner was the President of the graduating Class of 1991 at Kennedy High School (now Kennedy Catholic High School). He was featured prominently in the 25th Anniversary Jubilee Day publication. At the time, Greg was a senior preparing for graduation and accepted to attend the University of Washington. His plans were to get a business degree and become an international banker. In that 1991 publication, Greg said, “I feel like Kennedy has given me a strong academic background. The teachers that are here seem like they want to be here. You can get a lot out of it if you put a lot into it.” Recently, we met Greg at the Burien location of his business, Eat Local, where Greg is the President and Founder. After graduation, Greg did go to UW and then the Foster School of Business for his degree. After having a successful tech start-up, he travelled for a year volunteering and serving Mother Teresa in Calcutta. He then worked in London and South America in private equity. Greg started Eat Local eight years ago because he could only find prepared meals with preservatives, additives, fillers and too much sodium. He opened his first storefront in Queen Anne in 2007 with no idea how hard it would be to make delicious frozen food from scratch. The company survived because of their commitment, care for the customer, and a kitchen team dedicated to keep trying until they got it right. Today, he has 37 employees, four stores and an online store that offers same-day delivery anywhere in Seattle and free delivery anywhere on the west coast. Greg samples every single batch of food before it heads to the store. He is focused on quality control and is committed to great customer service. His vision for the next five years includes continued expansion and further integration of technology throughout the business. He is lucky to have both his mom and dad helping with the business and appreciates having his main location in Burien very near where he grew up. He loves being located in Burien and speaks to other business owners about moving into the area. “Burien is like the new Ballard,” he said.

Greg looks back on his time in high school with great fondness and says he has fantastic memories. He keeps in touch with many of his classmates. When asked about his comments from the publication in 1991 he says, “I received an amazing education at Kennedy and graduated with a well-rounded foundation. It was that foundation that gave me the confidence to start a business that I am truly passionate about.” If you want to learn more about Greg’s business, Eat Local, visit their web site at www.eatlocalonline.com.
