Hidden Jewels Mokume

Carol Simmons Sat–Sun, Oct 7–8 / 9am–5pm

Mokume Gane is a Japanese metalworking technique in which thin layers of variously colored metals are fused together, then distorted and ground down to reveal a beautiful pattern. We will mimic the metalworking technique by stacking thin layers of different colors of pearlescent Premo clay alternating with non-pearlescent clay to form a block (or billet) which we will “distort” with impression plates we will make ourselves. The block will be sliced with a special slicer to produce gorgeous, paper-thin sheets of patterned clay with the appearance of patterned silk batik. These patterned sheets will be used to create a unique pendant that will be fired, then sanded and buffed to a glasslike shine to accentuate the pattern. A number of other applications will be demonstrated and students will have an opportunity to make additional pieces of jewelry (bracelet, earrings, brooch.) A $5 fee will be collected in class. In the morning create fine silver piece(s) with Precious Metal Clay, forming, drying and firing in a kiln or with a butane torch. After lunch and an introduction to some basic metal working techniques, you will permanently connect the PMC to the Argentium sterling, then finish your edges, apply patina, and take your finished piece home. No previous experience required but some familiarity with PMC or with traditional metalworking skills is helpful. Class size 8. Register by Oct 16. 17C450 / Tuition $110 / Materials Fee $45

Create a curving, shapely concrete birdbath over a mold you’ll shape yourself from wet sand. That’s on Thursday morning. The birdbaths must stay on the molds overnight to harden sufficiently. So on Friday afternoon you’ll carefully remove the birdbath from the mold, trim the edges, and start adding mosaic to the interior. There will be plenty of stained glass, ceramic shards, pebbles and mirror bits to work with for colorful designs. You’ll adhere the mosaic to the concrete, and when that’s done you’ll grout it. Guaranteed gorgeous. Class size 8. 17C238A / Tuition $105

If The Shoe Fits: Mixed Media Assemblage Workshop

Lorraine Reynolds Fri, Aug 25 / 10am–5pm

The saying goes “If the shoe fits wear it.” If it doesn’t fit … well… I say, make art with it. Shoes are very intimate accessories that are so close to us everyday, yet are generally taken for granted. They separate us from the ground. They protect us from the elements. They are a part of our daily lives. If they could talk, they would have rich histories to tell. The shoe, then, is our starting point to create visual stories. Their deep recesses have the potential to hold so much meaning and inspiration. This class is an introduction to the art of assemblage, using everyday discarded and recycled objects to create a shrine assemblage. You will learn basic construction techniques as well as how to develop themes and narrative. Class size 14. 17C255A / Tuition $130 / Materials Fee $10

Mixed Media Collage

This is an intuitive and abstract design that asks for balance in the finished piece – fill in with just the beads needed to achieve your balance. We’ll discuss various finishing techniques that will enable you to do a completely different necklace each time. For all levels of experience, good small motor skills helpful. Tools will be available for use in class. Class size 10. 17C266A / Tuition $65 Materials Fee $30 for a kit (payable to instructor at class time)

Cloud Painting: An Introduction to Paper Marbling Nancy Akerly Sat–Sun, Oct 28–29 / 9am–4:30pm

Around the world, from the far east to Europe, paper marbling has intrigued us for over 600 years. The vivid colors and intricate designs capture our attention - and the making of marbled art is pure magic. Even a beginner can create beautiful work, yet there is enough challenge and variety that marbling can become a lifetime pursuit. Start by learning how a marbling studio is set up, from making the size, or carrageenan, to preparing the acrylic colors and assembling the necessary tools. Learn basic techniques and patterns such as the French Curl, Gel-Get, Nonpareil, Stome Marbling, and Spanish Wave, then explore more modern variations. You will leave with at least 20 absolutely lovely papers to use for your own projects, whether scrapbooking, jewelry, bookbinding, or framing as is. Class size 12. Register by Oct 16.

Mysteries of Translucence Andrea Matus deMeng Fri–Sun Nov 10–12 9am–4pm

You can’t help yourself. You walk past that bizarre ghostly window; it’s darkened but you see a small flicker of something… something that lurks inside – but what? Mystery. The seen, the unseen… and everything in-between – that’s what this class is all about. We’re going to be creating something magnificent, magical, and very very mysterious. The secret is in the multiple layers, but not just any layers: layers of semi-transparent and transparent materials. You’ll be guided through the process incorporating brand new methods of using transfers, resins, transparencies and acrylic sheets to create multi-tiered compositions of layered collage. We will create effects that mimic the look of printed glass, stained glass, glass etchings and encaustics. We’ll push the boundaries with lots of play, then assimilate the best of the experiments into our project, creating a multitude of incredible layers. Class size 16. Register by Oct 30.

Build abstract paintings by layering, utilizing cold wax medium, tube oils, pigment sticks, powdered pigments and a variety of implements. This workshop is well suited for those with some prior painting experience and who enjoy the sharing, flexibility and happenstance of a group environment! The focus is on the process itself more than a “finished” painting. We will look at form and content, deliberate and accidental mark making, starting points, titling of work, and working in series. Moku Hanga, An Intro to Japanese Woodblock Printing Alfred Stark Thu–Sun, Sep 28–Oct 1 Thurs–Sat 9am–-4pm; Sun 9am–noon

Moku Hanga, meaning “wood print,” is a simple, centuries old Japanese technique employing water-based ink, basic carving and rubbing tools, beautiful Japanese paper, and fine-grained wood. Many Western printmaking methods involve complex printing presses, oil-based inks and toxic solvents. By contrast, Moku Hanga utilizes only a few simple tools, a small work space, and is entirely water based. Alfred will teach you to hand carve and print your unique drawing from fine-grained Shina Plywood onto beautiful Japanese paper, a skill you can continue to use to make prints for many years. No experience necessary. You are encouraged to bring photos or drawings you can use in creating your print. Materials fee covers papers and other supplies. Judy will have plenty of 6”x8” pre-cut linoleum, plus brayers, a registration system, plenty of archival papers and easy to clean up inks (Speedball, Caligo, Akua). All you need to bring are one or two small, sharp V gouges and U gouges. Check DickBlick.com for “linoleum cutters” or iMcClains.com for finer tools. Help Restore Our Grounds In August of this year (2016), in a matter of two weeks, we experienced three different downpours that caused the most significant damage the paths have seen in years; damage that caused us to close doors to visitors until we could get repairs in place. We’ve patched things up as best as we can but a long term solution is needed and we are working with city officials, local contractors and the community to ensure we don’t see another summer of destruction here on our magical little campus. To donate go to https://www.gofundme.com/help-restore-the-shake-rag-grounds.
